European Plastics Industry – Villain or Hero?
“A man cannot become a hero until he can see the root of his own downfall”
Aristotle
In 2010, PolyTalk brought together the plastics industry and the scientific community to pave the way
for a groundbreaking joint initiative to tackle a major societal, environmental and economic issue:
marine litter.
In 2011, the second PolyTalk gathered industry captains and green economy “gurus”, such as
John Elkington, to set the first steps towards the development of a sustainability roadmap for
the plastics industry.
What is ailing us in 2012? And what, if anything, can and should be done to put things back on track?
The world population is growing at a steady rate, approaching 9 billion people in the coming decades.
The wealth gap between north and south is increasing at an unacceptable pace. The scarcity of vital
resources, such as water and fossil fuels, if not dealt with on time, will have severe consequences
on all.
Can we afford to idly stand by and watch?
And how about the plastics industry? Does it have any future in Europe? Are plastics part of
the solution or are they aggravating the problem? Is this the beginning of the end?
As citizens of Europe, it is our duty to act now and to find viable solutions; business as usual is
no longer an option.
We believe it is high time to reconcile science and emotions, productivity and resource preservation,
profitability and social responsibility.
Do you think plastics, the material that some love to hate, is part of the solution?
I hope you will join us at PolyTalk 2012 to have your say!

Dr Wilfried Haensel
Executive Director, PlasticsEurope
The European plastics industry is highly aware of the responsibility it has towards the well-being and
safety of anyone using our products. We are also aware that “business as usual” is not an option
bearing in mind the growth of the world population and the further strain this will entail on our shrinking
resources. The captains of our industry are eager to support this endeavour by establishing an active
dialogue with you and other key players to shape the solutions that will respond appropriately to
the environmental, economic and societal challenges we all have to face.
For this purpose PolyTalk 2012 “Plastics – an intriguing love story” on Friday, 21 September in
Wiesbaden, Germany will bring together policy-makers, high level industry representatives and other
relevant key players to pave the way for a “zero impact growth” roadmap to promote prosperity in
Europe with the significant contribution of the plastics industry providing safe and sustainable products
to enhance the well-being of citizens.
Key influential decision-makers and opinion-formers that will participate are as follows:
• Dr Janez Potočnik, EU Commissioner for the Environment
• Prof. Anne Glover, Chief Scientific Adviser to EU Commission President Barroso
• Susan Freinkel, Best-selling author “Plastics, A Toxic Love Story”
• Axel Singhofen, Advisor on Health and Environment Policy in the European Parliament Greens Group
• Sir Jonathon Porritt, Sustainability expert at Forum for the Future
• Dr Martin Brudermüller, Vice Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE
• Patrick Thomas, President, PlasticsEurope and CEO, Bayer MaterialScience
We invite you to come to PolyTalk to have your say in the future of the plastics industry in Europe.

Programme
European Plastics Industry – Villain or Hero?
As one of Europe’s key industries, does the plastics industry have a role to play in the European economic
recovery process?
Will plastics, the youngest material on the planet, form an intrinsic part of the solution or are they
aggravating the many challenges society is facing?
At PolyTalk we offer a unique learning opportunity that will help participants understand the full potential
of the industry and the material that is yet to be explored.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going!
Europe is facing one of the severest crises in decades. Can we still afford the luxury to stand idly by while

As an industry, we are determined to shoulder our part of the burden and sit together with opinion-formers,
policy and decision-makers to develop a roadmap for sustainable economic growth.
The train is in motion, come on board to have your say.

EcoCommercial building
Climate changes and energy shortages are key global challenges today. The construction industry accounts
for 40 percent of the energy consumption and 30 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions in the world,
mainly caused during the operation of buildings. Therefore, energy efficient construction is a significant
contribution to climate protection, but at the same time leads to cost savings for the operator of the
building. Environmental challenges together with the trend towards further urbanisation are leading to an
increasing demand for sustainable buildings today.
Dr Thomas Roemer
Bayer
MaterialScience
Developing integrated plans and turning them into reality requires an aligned interaction of highly specialised experts across multiple disciplines. Therefore, Bayer MaterialScience founded the EcoCommercial
Building Programme as an expert network with solutions for the energy-efficient, environmentally friendly
and economical construction of commercial buildings. In managing this network, Bayer MaterialScience as a
raw material supplier takes on an industry integrating role.
Common principle is to initially optimise the energy demand to an environmental and economical optimum.
This includes the design of the building, thermal insulation of the building envelope and energy efficient
building technology. Subsequent follows the coverage of the optimised energy demand with an energy
supply including renewable energies. Based on a smart combination of today readily available technologies
up to 90 percent of the primary energy demand can be saved.
The principles of sustainable construction are global and applicable to any building type, but have to be
adopted locally in order to meet respective energy efficiency, environmental and economic targets and
guidelines. The EcoCommercial Building Programme relates to the need of local adaptation through
involvement of locally present experts with the respective market knowledge. This industry integrating
marketing and development network aims at increasing the penetration of sustainable buildings globally
and hence creating a market pull for the network members’ products as well as gaining and taking up
first-hand innovation impulses.

Plastics for a Pioneering Concept Car:
The smart forvision in Cooperation with BASF
In September 2011, Daimler and BASF presented a pioneering concept vehicle at the Frankfurt Motor Show
(IAA): The smart forvision. The new vehicle brings design, lifestyle and technology together to form a new
functional whole.
Thomas Fritzsche
BASF SE
The concept car combines futuristic design with innovative technologies in the areas of lightweight design,
heat management and energy efficiency. As a result, the smart forvision is the perfect vehicle for showcasing
new technologies. The researchers and developers have succeeded in combining no less than five
automotive world premieres in the new concept vehicle. Transparent organic solar cells, transparent organic
light-emitting diodes, all-plastic wheels, new lightweight body components and infrared-reflective films and
coatings all help reduce the vehicle’s energy consumption and so increase its range and comfort.
The smart forvision not only shows that electric mobility can make emission-free driving possible.
At the same time it paves the way for new technologies in the automotive sector. The total of all technologies integrated in the concept vehicle make a perceptible contribution to increasing the range. This is always
at the centre of discussions relating to battery-electric driven vehicles. With maximum energy efficiency,
intelligent heat management and consistent lightweight construction it is possible to increase the range
by up to 20 percent.

Engineering Polymers in Medical Applications
Constant innovation causes medical technology equipment to evolve at a rapid pace. Materials of
construction play a central role in the design of new equipment. As the patient community demands
increased safety and accuracy from providers, these dictates are ultimately met through high-performance
materials. There is an increasing trend towards “smart” products, including “intelligent” drug delivery
systems like insulin injection pens, powder inhalers and needleless injectors. Using engineering plastics in
medical technology can help reduce total manufacturing cost, through consolidation of multiple parts into a
single unit and by implementation of automated assembly processes.
Daniel Behrens
Ticona
Ticona recognises the challenges of mission-critical components and offers an array of leading edge
materials that are excellent candidates for medical applications. Ticona’s resins are offered globally yet
supported locally, with materials and services available to support all phases of development.
Beyond that, Ticona is committed to producing its medical technology (MT) grades over the long term,
making Ticona the logical choice to supply resins for medical engineering needs. Ticona’s MT products have
a history of use in components of diagnostic systems, large clinical equipment, pharmaceutical packaging
and articulating bearing surfaces for orthopedic implants. Other applications in which Ticona’s highperformance plastics have demonstrated successful performance include dosing and delivery systems
and minimally invasive surgical instruments.

Solar Impulse – Driver of Progress
Aviation has always been an outstanding agent of progress and innovation.
The aim of Solar Impulse and its creators is not to revolutionise the aviation industry – it would be stupid and
pretentious to even attempt this – but instead to use the power of this airborne symbol to help change people’s
minds about renewable energies. In the present context, people are put off by the sheer scale of the problems.
Instead, they should be encouraged, because technological solutions exist that can create jobs and open new
markets whilst also protecting the environment.
André Borschberg
Solar Impulse
Aviation, for its part, must clearly change to survive, given the constant rise in the price of kerosene and CO2
taxes. But it is obvious that, unlike Solar Impulse, airliners’ engines are not about to start functioning without
fuel. The solar airplane simply demonstrates that “less can mean more”.
Solar Impulse has started to fulfill the good-citizenship role for which it was designed. The solar airplane
provokes discussions amongst the highest political and economic authorities about technological solutions
currently available to help them achieve the world’s agreed CO2 reduction targets. And it also allows them to
tackle the problem of resistance to change, which risks locking us in for too long into the dangerous and costly
consequences of old habits. It is with the aim of promoting such processes of change that Europe is using
Solar Impulse, to give an example of what clean technology is capable of achieving.
The gigantic, but ultra-lightweight dimensions of this revolutionary airplane – capable of flying day and night
without fuel – are its trademark feature.
To build it, the Solar Impulse team had to push back the frontiers of knowledge in materials science, energy
management and the man-machine interface.
Every one of its take-offs, propelled silently by its four electric motors, inspires us to consider using clean, new
technologies to free our society, little by little, from dependence on fossil energy.
With each of their great “firsts”, the adventurers of the last century constantly pushed back the limits of the
impossible. Today, the drive to make new discoveries must go on, with the aim of improving the quality of life on
our planet. By writing the next pages in aviation history with solar energy, and voyaging around the world
without fuel or pollution, Solar Impulse's ambition is for the world of exploration and innovation to contribute to
the cause of renewable energies, to demonstrate the importance of clean technologies for sustainable
development; and to place dreams and emotions back at the heart of scientific adventure.
But going beyond the question of energy, Solar Impulse would also like to encourage each and every one of us
to become pioneers in our own lives, in our ways of thinking and behaving.

André Borschberg, CEO and Pilot
