The Seoul National University Museum is defined by its siting on
the side of a small hill, close to the entrance of the university.
The building's form was conceived as a basic rectangular box,
sliced diagonally by the incline of the hill. This form is then
raised up on a small central core - the only point of contact with
the ground - so the building is nearly all cantilever, extending up
and down the hill, following the topography precisely and
appearing to hover above it. The museum both defines and
defeats the hill, and, by keeping the ground beneath it largely
free, becomes an attractive conduit between the university
campus and the outside community. Both outside and inside,
free-flowing circulation was key to the thinking behind the
building. The central core is an atrium with a square-spiral
staircase connecting the various program areas: exhibition,
education, library, and operations.

Leeum - Samsung Museum of Art
Address
Hannam-Dong, Yongsan-Gu 747-18
140-890 Seoul
South Korea
.
The Leeum Samsung Museum of Art was opened after years of
preparation to showcase the best of traditional Korean art and
the works of international artists. Byung-Chull (Hoam) Lee,
founder of the Samsung Group, built a private collection of
Korean cultural treasures and artworks which are on display at
the Ho Am Art Museum, Ho Am Gallery, and the Rodin Gallery.
Following the footsteps of the late founder, Kun-Hee Lee,
chairman of Samsung, continued to expand the collection with
traditional artworks of great value in Korean art history and
works of modern Korean as well as international artists. This new
enlarged collection is now on display at the Leeum Samsung
Museum of Art. As a melting ground of past, present, and future
art and culture, the Museum complex in itself is a grand
masterpiece of world renowned architects Mario Botta, Jean
Nouvel and Rem Koolhaas. See how the individual styles of
different artists blend together in the Museum grounds.

Cheonggyecheon Stream

Cheonggyecheon
Seoul
South Korea

.
Completed in 2005 and proudly flouted as one of the most
beautiful natural places in Seoul by the tourism board, it is
poorly designed and hardly an example of a sustainable system,
given that the water flow is artificially pumped in from the
mains. From an architectural point of view there is much room
for improvement. That said, the area is usually crowded with
locals and tourists, giving visitors a 'chill out' space where
regular public events can take place. It has improved the area
significantly by providing an intermediary space, a break in the
urban fabric, and this is what makes Cheonggyecheon a
successful, sustainable urban project - not the stream, the trees
nor the 12.04 km of walking paths. Similarly, the Hangang
'Renaissance' project currently in development is further
evidence of the citizenry's desire for better environments.

Situated at the base of the Great South Gate along TaePyong-Ro,
Seoul's historic axis, the Rodin Museum is part of a larger
assemblage of glass and steel interventions that were designed
to create a new identity for Samsung, unify three of their
existing buildings, and provide an active public retail arcade and
plaza. Contextually, the museum terminates a new colonnade and
canopy that weave together across all three sites with the
museum itself as a small, luminous glass pavilion that evolved
from the placement of two famous works of sculpture by
Auguste Rodin, 'The Burgers of Calais' and 'The Gates of Hell'. As
the architecture of the three existing Samsung buildings was so
disparate, the primary design solution was to connect the
Headquarters Building, the Insurance Building and the Industry
Building to each other and the city by unifying all three with a
new retail base. This base creates a physical and visual identity
as well as an architectural order to the complex.

Boutique Monaco Tower
Address
Seocho-gu, Seocho-dong 1316-5
Seoul
South Korea
.
This tower project has a floor area of 54,859 m2, with
commercial, cultural, and community spaces on the lower levels,
and officetels on floors 5 through 27. To ensure the maximum
building footprint ratio (40%) as well as optimal natural light
conditions, a C-shaped plan is extruded into a 27-story tower
consistent with the Domino Matrix to reach a height of 100
meters, the maximum height allowed by law. When the C-shaped
plan is simply repeated vertically, however, the floor space of the
entire tower exceeds the legally allowed amount by
approximately 10%. To reduce this mass systematically, missing
matrices are introduced, meeting the maximum FAR (970%)
throughout the building mass. Through 15 missing spaces, the
building gains more exterior surface and corners for more natural
light and better views. The spaces created by the missing
matrices are landscaped with trees that are visible from the
inside and outside of the building.

The Ann Demeulemeester Shop in Sinsa is one of the few
buildings by the architects that is readily accessible to the
public. The most striking aspect of this project is its living facade
- a geotextile planted with a perennial that has often been
misinterpreted as a sign of 'green/environmentally sustainable'
design. It has however, created a fantastic aesthetic, and its
response to local scale, while still being a striking building, is
impressive. Unlike many buildings in Seoul, this little shop
manages to elegantly define the borders of natural/artificial,
interior/ exterior space, while at the same time integrating them
experientially.

A shopping mall which became a catalyst for the revitalization of
Insadong. Unlike the tabula-rasa mentality commonly seen in
many building projects, the existing street shops were rebuilt and
incorporated into the new center, and, along with the setback of
the building, allows for the complex to melt into the
street-scape. The circulation around the atrium allows for
shoppers to browse through the unique stores, while being able
to experience public events that take place in the central space.
Elegant detailing and simple contemporary materials - brick,
glass, concrete - are used to create pockets of intermediary
space and moments of joy. There is a hum, a collective energy in
this space generated by the use of the building.

"...I have decided to introduce some weight to this dense area,
where buildings of so many numbers of styles, the confusing
signboards, the electric cables and telegraph poles overhead are
not offering one bit of feeling of stability. The simpler it is, the
more acutely the weight will be felt. No windows, no
adornments, but only the weight of the metal will be there. It is a
negative void to create tension in this brawling scenery. But
inside it there is much brightness..." Text by Seung H-Sang

Korean architect Kim In Cheurl designed the innovative Urbanhive
tower located in Seoul, South Korea. Urbanhive is a 17 levels of
70 meter high tower with white exposed concrete and
contextually sits on the corner of the street within the urban
matrix, featuring the perforated architectural façade. The
transparent glass screen, separated from structural holes, is only
to maintain the internal conditions, not to serve as a window.
The circular cell placed diagonally reduces weight of a
rectangular tube, reinforced concrete structure. The cast are
made of P.O steel using a laser cutting machine and packed with
high strength high flow concrete.

This building in central Seoul is the first rusty cor-ten steel
façade to be built in South Korea. Working studios are arranged in
four separate 'little houses' that stand on a concrete base

giving views of a wooded mountain slope on the other side of a

In the words of the Architect "emptiness and silence are essential
components. The vastness of a site does not demand a greater
response." As in much of Perrault's work, the notion that
Architecture disappears into context through both form and
function are certainly evident in the student center at Ewha
Woman's University, serving both as pause and link between the
surrounding city and the University community.

Galleria Department Store
Address
Apgujeong-dong 515

The Galleria Department Store project had two main goals. The
first was a new façade that projects a lively, ever-changing
surface. In total 4330 glass discs are mounted on the existing
concrete skin of the building. The glass discs include special
dichroic foil generating a mother-of-pearl effect during the day.
During the night, each glass disc is lit by LED lights which can be
programmed to create a multitude of effects. The second goal
was the renovation of the interior into a luxurious integrated
design. Inspired by the catwalk the customer finds himself
immersed in the world of fashion while moving through the
generous corridors. The interior design focuses on the elimination
of superfluous details and introduces new integrated Big Details.

Began designing in June 1996, Junggokdong Catholic Church took
5 years to complete by early 2001. Compared to the Middle Ages
it is not a long period, but in this age of fast life it is quite a
stretch. The period is substantial enough to change the
conceptual philosophies of an architect, and it is humbling to look
back on former ideas, some of which one tends to forget after a
while. However, in 1997 I started a series feature called 'field
notes' on the project in an architectural magazine, which left me
with traces of the thoughts that were behind the project. Some
of these fragmented discourses are different from the finished
work, and some even differ from what I believe now.
Nevertheless, they were important clues to the framework for the
project. Here are some excerpts.Text by Seung H-Sang
