who shared his first-time experience at a trade show.

At the trade show you will receive
3 or 4 full days of exposure to
35,000 retail buyers from across
the globe! One of the issues that
many first-time exhibitors face
after the first day is the realisation
that their product may not be fully
formed yet or ready for the markets.
Buyers who attend trade shows
are professional retail sellers.

what sells and why. Many firsttime exhibitors are resistant to
the constructive criticism that
buyers and take offence, however
you will soon realise that they are
helping you!

Buyers and agents aren’t the only
ones you can chat to! There are
thousands of exhibitors at these
shows looking to connect with
like-minded individuals and are
willing to talk for free. Many exhibitors are manufacturers and distributors and are eager to share their
experiences about their business
and the industry.
Consider your options when improving your product, no matter
what industry you are in. For an
example, you may meet a exhibitor who is selling an extremely
successful kids accessory item. He
will tell you that it’s not as easy as
it looks. Over a period of 10 years
he has launched 15 products, only
three of which have hit it big. It
takes patience and dedication to
improve your product.

If this is your first visit to a trade
show, it shouldn’t be your last.
You will see that most of the exhibitors at the show have been doing
this on average for five years.
Some broke even by year three.
Hardly any were profitable before year five. In essence, it takes
months and years to receive any
returns from the trade show.
This means you will exhibit at a
trade show with prototypes and no
inventory. You will receive feedback that will help you improve
the prototype into a finalised
product. On the other hand, if
you showcase a finalised product
you will realise that there is still a
huge amount of improvement still
needed. You will waste money by
showcasing a finalised product.
