CHARITY APPEAL FOR WOUNDED SOLDIERS
AN EVENING IN AID OF
SUPPORTING OUR MEN & WOMEN
WHO HAVE BEEN KILLED OR INJURED
IN THE FIGHT FOR FREEDOM
IN AFGHANISTAN
This year Just Rifles supported three people to sail with
the Jubilee Sailing Trust on one of the legs of the round the
world voyage. The Lord Nelson, a totally accessible Tall
Ship has sailed from Australia and is moving onto New
Zealand. Rifleman Justin Davies is one of those who has
benefitted from your support. You may have met him at
the dinner last year. Justin is a remarkable individual losing both his legs early in his career he has been a great
example of courage in his recovery. Unfortunately he is
not here this evening as he is in New Zealand with the
JST. We have also supported the sister of a young
Rifleman who was killed in action last year and she too
is on the The Lord Nelson. Just Rifles will continue to
support the families of the fallen as well as the injured.
We have also supported a Platoon Serjeant from the
Territorial Army who has been severely injured. With a
young family he could not live the active life style he
enjoyed before injury and a cross country vehicle donated
by Just Rifles has allowed him to regain mobility and be
with his children in the countryside. It is a huge pleasure
to support both the regular and territorial army.
and the mission has evolved. Now the focus is on
mentoring the Afghan Forces so that they are manned,
trained, and equipped to take full responsibility for security
after NATO forces drawdown at the end of 2014. British
forces will remain central to this transition right up to
the completion of NATO’s current mission. We should be
very proud of their achievements so far and anticipate
that they will continue give their very best in exacting
circumstances.
One legacy of the conflict is our responsibility for the
rehabilitation of the wounded. It can take many years, for
some it is never ending. The conclusion of the UK combat
operations will not signal the end of their fight, they will
have to come to terms with life changing injuries,
overcoming physical and mental challenges and return to
normality as best they can. Thank you for being here;
tonight is another amazing illustration of the huge support
that the public gives our injured. Let’s make a real
different to their lives by giving generously tonight.
The conflict in Afghanistan does not always make the
news headlines as it used to. But British service men and
women are still on the front line; everyday they put
themselves at risk and sadly some continue to be injured.
There has been progress in many areas of Afghanistan

Lance Corporal Keogh was killed by a
gunshot wound during a small arms
engagement in Sangin, Helmand
province. He was in Patrol Base
Bariolai when he was killed.
Lance Corporal Keogh originally
enlisted in 2003, serving until 2008,
including a tour in Iraq on Operation
TELIC 10. After a year's break, he
rejoined in 2009. Immediately upon rejoining, he was posted
to the Reconnaissance Platoon, 4RIFLES.
“Devastated to see his Recce mates deploy without him last
June after he was injured, his moment came recently when
he joined A Company as a battle casualty replacement. In
the meantime he came top of 130 Riflemen on his Junior
NCO promotion cadre; a particularly difficult accolade to
secure coming as it did when he was a guest on a course
being held by one of our sister Rifles battalions.
“Those who have gone before him as top student have
fast-tracked up the promotion ladder. Like them, his
trajectory was set and his future very bright.
Very soon thereafter, he started pre-deployment training
for Afghanistan with R Company, Fire Support Group, who
were due to deploy as part of the Election Support Force.
He was injured in an accident just before deployment,
and remained in the UK to recover, before training for and
completing a potential Junior Non-Commissioned Officer
(JNCO) cadre with 5 RIFLES.
He gained the coveted top student award on the course
before deploying to Afghanistan with A Company, 4 RIFLES,
on Operation HERRICK 11.
Lance Corporal Keogh was born on 25 August 1985. He
was from Paddington in London and leaves behind his
parents and two brothers.
Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Jones, Commanding Officer, 4
RIFLES, said:
“It is sometimes tempting to get carried away in extolling
the virtues of the fallen, but with Lance Corporal Tom
Keogh there is no danger of drifting towards exaggeration.
He was quite simply one of the very best soldiers in the
battalion and proves yet again the sad adage that it is the
best that die young.
“The Reconnaissance Platoon is a haven for the best and
most motivated Riflemen, as they are always very keen to
tell us. Lance Corporal Keogh was totally at home there and
was one of their real stars - a natural soldier who just got
it. Highly fit, dynamic, and extremely professional, but always
there for those less capable and experienced than him.
“The younger lads were drawn to him by his example and
kindness. He was a genuine role model to them and they
aspired to his standards.
“He is the third to fall in A Company in ten days and his loss
will be felt deeply. Likewise, back in Bulford, his great many
friends will mourn the loss of a loyal brother Rifleman, an
exceptionally decent man and one of our finest warriors.
His family are in our thoughts and prayers.
“They have so much to be proud of in what he achieved. His
sacrifice is the tragic price being paid for the deliberate but
concrete progress being made in Helmand to improve the
lives of the Afghan people. Those that were touched by him
will never forget him. His memory will only give us all yet
more determination to deliver improved security as a fitting
and enduring legacy.”

Hilton London Syon Park sits on the edge of the two hundred acre Syon House estate, an English pastoral setting
that has served as the country home of the Duke of Northumberland for over 400 years. Syon House, his London
residence, offers an opportunity to tour the last surviving ducal estate in Greater London. Explore the magnificent
estate and private apartments. View the Great Conservatory - built in the 1830s, it was the first to be built from
metal and glass on such a scale. The conservatory lies on a tidal meadow, home to more than 200 species of trees,
which is flooded twice a day by the Thames. There are over forty acres of gardens in which to experience the
timeless magic of an aristocratic country house.

Thank you so much for your kind email. I apologise that I have not replied sooner. I am still in Afghanistan
commanding Task Force Helmand. I am back before the date of the event, but I regret that I am not able
to make the date. I do apologise, but hope very much that the event will be a great success.
As you probably know, 4 RIFLES are out here too in the Task Force. Tom would be very proud of how they
have performed. I hope that you can also draw some comfort from the progress that has been made
here. The situation really has been transformed since 2009-10 and the people of Afghanistan have been
given an opportunity for the future. You may know that 4 RIFLES deployed for a period in July back to
where Tom and A Company were based on Op HERRICK 11.
I think often about the brave Riflemen of 4 RIFLES who fell during the course of Ops HERRICK 10 and
11. They are remembered by all who had the privilege to serve with them. In the New Year, 1
Mechanized Brigade which I command will unveil a memorial board for all those who have died from the
Brigade in both Iraq and Afghanistan .
I will write to all the families in due course, but I hope that you will be able to join us for the unveiling.
With very best wishes.

Every year on the second Sunday of March
over 34,000 cyclists descend on South
Africa’s Western Cape to compete in
Cape Town’s - Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle
Tour. A 109km race that’s as gruelling
as it is spectacular.
The charity Just Rifles approached
the Rifles Cycle Team and offered to
fly them and their bikes out to
compete, they jumped at the chance
and set to work.
CHARITY APPEAL FOR WOUNDED SOLDIERS
Fund raising began in earnest, tins were rattled at
a Battalion Rugby match in Hyde Park and friends,
family and work colleagues were badgered
mercilessly via text and email. Eyebrows were
raised at the location, but nevertheless people
dug deep and eventually everyone exceeded their
goal. Physical training was stepped up and the
team began competing in regular monthly
Sportives up and down the country. The last being
two weeks before they were due to fly out, in
minus 3 degree blizzards on the Kent downs.
Stark contrast to the 35 degree heat awaiting
them 9,000 miles away.
Clr Sjt Barry Street, Sjt Mark Polden, Corporal
Wayne Holdrick, Lance Corporal Mike Filgate,
Lance Corporal Jamie Pulley and Rifleman James
Macnaught arrived at Heathrow laden with lycra,
energy bars and large cycle carry boxes courtesy
of the Specialized cycle shop in Radlett, close to
Wayne Holdrick’s home.
Long delays at Johannesburg customs meant a
sprint through the terminal to make the
connecting flight to Cape Town.A few hours later
we arrived, however our bikes hadn’t and teased
by the glorious sunshine outside we had to sit
and wait for the next two flights before all our
kit eventually joined us. Crab air has nothing on
SAA.

CHARITY APPEAL FOR WOUNDED SOLDIERS
A surreal sight met us as we approached the start amidst
the tall buildings of the financial sector, hundreds and
hundreds of silent cyclists converging towards the
growing noise of the PA and sound system. Despite a
rising uneasiness that we wouldn’t find our designated
start area amongst the crowd, the smooth efficiency of
this fantastically organized event whisked us straight into
our pen. More kit checks, tyres, shoes, helmet, sunglasses
for when the sun eventually shows up. The atmosphere
and a few nerves building. We’d been given a start time
of 06:45 and as the groups before us set off, we clipped
in to pedals, talking stopped and we waited for H Hour.
We were taken via landrover (naturally) and trailer, to
our home for the next 10 days, the South African Legion
headquarters in Rondebosch (Literally round bush) a
southern suburb of Cape Town at the base of Devils Peak
on the Eastern side of Table Mountain.
The SA Legion is run by Brg Gen John Del Monte retired.
And is not only their headquarters but a retirement
community for ex servicemen and women. We were
immediately struck by the warmth and hospitality of our
hosts. Insisting we sit and join them for lunch everyday
after training. A small apartment had been converted to
a mini dorm and the ladies in the laundry wouldn’t let us
do a thing, and we returned each day to a pile of clean
clothes.
Mornings began with circuits of the nearby Rondebosch
common to get warmed up on the bikes before heading
up towards the steep climbs past the University of Cape
Town and into the national park beyond. A brief stop at
the Rhodes Memorial to take in the stunning views,
before cycling back down to do it all again. As the heat
crept up towards mid-day we returned to base. And a
gaggle of eager ladies of a certain age excited at the
prospect of some young (ish) lycra clad soldiers joining
them for lunch. The Brigadier had arranged for Lt Col
Bryan Sterne, who commands the small Garrison at
Cape Town castle to be our guide. He arrived and said in
a hushed tone he expects some of the elderly ladies to
try and slip some room keys our way. A passing lady said
aloud “Give it time” as she negotiated her zimmer frame
through the lunch tables.
The week literally flew by. And seven days later, at 05:15,
our minibus laden with bikes, left Rondebosch and
headed for the Castle. It was still dark. Very little traffic
and fewer pedestrians were out at this time on a Sunday
morning. As we neared the Castle where the Colonel
had secured us a parking space and shower facilities for
after the race, we saw a cyclist dart out from a side road,
race number on their back, small LED’s flashing red. Then
gradually more and more appeared.
We parked and began unloading and re-assembling the
bikes. Then helmets on, final few checks and pockets
stuffed with energy bars and food, we moved off.
The early start time meant we were amongst seasoned
riders, and from the off the pace was brutal and very
close quarter, as hundreds of riders negotiated each
corner and junction. Once on the motorway section, the
team slowly began to spread out with Clr Sjt Street and
Sjt Polden leading the charge. It soon became every man
for himself. Helped along, even this early, by cheering
people, dancers and musicians lining the streets. Although
continually undulating, there were four main climbs. In the
UK we’re used to short, steep climbs and though not
unduly worried, the long slow ascents started to bite.
Blisteringly fast descents gave no opportunity to take in
the amazing views as every ounce of concentration was
required amongst such a density of riders.
The dreaded Chapmans Peak we’d heard so many horror
stories about finally over, we only had to face one more
long climb at Suikerbossie. A section we had twice recce’d
during the week but after three hours, and with the
strong wind and heat rising it proved to be the toughest
challenge.
The last 8 k was flat rolling roads round the beautiful
Camps Bay and into the crowd lined final straight to the
finish. One last burst of energy and finally over the line.
Smiles and relief all round. The RV was back at the castle,
and it took over an hour for the team to complete.
A limping Sjt Polden arriving scraped, bruised and
grinning after a crash mid way, bike creaking and loose
saddle hadn’t stopped him coming second in the team.
Once over, showered and into taxis to take us to the
exclusive Shimmy’s Beach Bar at the harbour, for a feast
courtesy of Jorrie Jordaan and his lovely wife, key
sponsors for the Just Rifles charity. We decided, along with
Bryan Fugler and the rest of the sponsorship team that it
had been a great success and next year needs to be a
bigger event with hopefully a lot more money raised and
wounded Riflemen competing, possibly solo or with a
tandem partner.
We continued to talk, drink and swap war stories of the
race long into the night. Only stopping to strip off and
leap into the pool at regular intervals and entertaining
the rest of the bar with the Rifles unique brand of
traditional squaddie dancing.
