Embracing the creation of new works, the reinvigoration of the classics, and the arts education of new generations, our work exemplifies our region’s values of inclusion and innovation while providing a sense of place and community. The San Francisco Bay Area is the prototype of an evolving America of ever-increasing diversity. As we explore this changing world, our art must enhance the American theatre with new vision, revealing both who we are and what we might become. CORE VALUES • Artistic Excellence—Create theatre art of the highest quality and integrity. • Diversity—Reflect the diversity of our community in both our process and our art. • Innovation—Explore what is new to create exceptional art. • Involvement—Engage ourselves and our community in our art. • Collaboration—Combine the individual energy of many to achieve the collective art of all. • Celebration of the Human Spirit—Explore the truth of who we are and the potential of what we might become. Advancing our mission as one of America’s outstanding regional theatres, TheatreWorks 2012/13 season was one of exceptional art and dramatic change. Artistic excellence on stage, innovation in New Works, education programs that excelled, and a move to exceptional new quarters highlighted a year of challenge and success for the company. SIMONE MISSICK IN THE MOUNTAINTOP / ALL PHOTOS BY MARK KITAOKA & TRACY MARTIN MISSION TheatreWorks is one of America’s outstanding professional theatres. Our work celebrates the human spirit through innovative productions, new works, and education programs inspired by and engaging our diverse Silicon Valley community. From Our Leadership As TheatreWorks-originated shows Memphis and Daddy Long Legs played around the country, our season of two world premieres, six regional premieres, and four playwrights in residence enhanced the company’s national reputation for work of exceptional diversity. Supported by an Edgerton New Play Award, the world premiere of the father-daughter drama Upright Grand opened the season. Broadway dramas Time Stands Still, about recovering war journalists, and 33 Variations, based on Beethoven’s masterpiece, were the first of six regional premieres. Adapted from Twain’s Huckleberry Finn, Big River became our second highest-selling production and launched three shows about the African American experience, including the electrifying Martin Luther King drama The Mountaintop and Wild With Happy, the story of a gay actor overcoming grief. The Puerto Rican dance-drama Somewhere featured a brilliant performance by Tony Award® winner Priscilla Lopez, followed by the world premiere of Being Earnest, a musical based on Oscar Wilde’s comedy. A strong commitment to female and minority artists, and an acclaimed five-show New Works Festival, further enhanced the mission-based diversity of our programming. Redwood City, and a new scene shop in Newark. This massive project created many challenges for the production staff, but the comfort and convenience of new offices, with rehearsal halls adjacent to costume facilities, promised long-term stability for the future. Another space-related issue was the 27 University Project, a proposal to build major office buildings and a theatre in downtown Palo Alto, which engaged the staff and Board, demonstrated a strong affection for TheatreWorks in the community, but encountered significant opposition because of broader development issues in the city. In a year of major relocations, personnel changes, and financial challenges, TheatreWorks’ artistic success and educational endeavors provided a consistent, invigorating focus on the company’s mission. Robert Kelley Artistic Director Phil Santora Managing Director Robin Kennedy Board Chair The year’s major off-stage event was the move to superb new offices and rehearsal halls at the Sobrato Center for Non-Profits in 1 The 2012/13 Season marked the 11th anniversary of our renowned New Works Initiative which has now contributed to the development of scores of new plays and musicals, earning national recognition and acclaim for the company. The New Works Initiative WORKSHOPS AND READINGS During the 2012/13 Season, TheatreWorks hosted a fall developmental workshop and a winter Writer’s Retreat. In all, 15 of our nation’s brightest playwrights, composers and lyricists came to Palo Alto to work on drafts of their newest plays and musicals.
