AMMA’S AUSTRALIAN YOUTH NEWSLETTER
Om Namah Shivaya!
Volume 1, Issue 1, Date
September is going to be a huge month! We
have the traditional Kerala celebration of
Onam, a harvest festival celebrating the rule of
King Mahabali. Our Beloved Amma’s birthday
falls on the 27th of this month and plans for
the celebration are already underway. It
should be a great event in all cities, so make
sure you don’t miss it! We are very excited to
announce that AYUDH Melbourne is joining
forces with Amma’s Kitchen to serve up
monthly breakfast in Dandenong and included
in the newsletter as well is an update from our
latest tree-planting event. You have probably
noticed that the newsletter has a different look
and is more user friendly, this is thanks to
Yashwin who will be putting the newsletter
together from now on as he is far more computer savvy than myself! Also, AYUDH Australia is changing over from a Facebook profile to
a Facebook page, so we encourage all of you to
“like” our Facebook page!

Report
AYUDH (Amma’s Youth group) and GreenFriends (the environmental
wing of Amma’s Embracing the World network of charities) once again
meet for tree planting and enjoy a day out in South Gippsland in July
2012. This year we revisited the farm of Daryl and Margaret Hook, a farm
where last year we planted over 600 indigenous seedlings.
This year we planted over 1200 trees for the day, Daryl assures us that
next year with better organization we should be able to aim for 2000! We
all met at the Australian Ashram and ten-strong team drove the hour and
a half to our destination, where Daryl and Margaret greeted us. After a
brief introduction, attired with gumboots and tree planters in hand we
seated ourselves on the back of a tracker-towed trailer and headed off
through the mud. Once at the destination we paired up and soon got the
hang of the task in hand and enjoyed a great time.
For lunch Margaret served up a hearty vegetarian soup and with our energy restored we soon headed back to complete the plantings before undertaking the trip home.
For many in the group it was their first experience of the Australian countryside and tree planting. For all of us it was a fun-filled satisfying day,
showing just how simple it is to reintroduce the bush and breathe new life
into the earth.
A great thanks to all who participated in this truly wonderful event!

2. AYUDH & Amma’s Kitchen
The Dandenong Kitchen Space
AYUDH Melbourne is embarking on an exciting new adventure! We are
joining forces with Amma’s Kitchen and will be serving breakfast on the
third Saturday of every month to the homeless in Dandenong.
On Saturday the 25th of August, we went to investigate the venue and
meet the program coordinator. The facilities are quite humble, compared
to the modern venue Amma’s Kitchen currently enjoys in Collingwood.
The demographic in Dandenong is also very different, so we are a little
unsure of what to expect and have been advised to dish up a tempting
menu.
We are all looking forward to the
challenge and with Amma’s grace
and your support, we hope that it
will be a great success. If you
would like to support this project,
we would love to have lots of
AYUDH volunteers on board,
please contact Srimayi on
0448 898 883 or [email protected].
Amma’s kitchen in Dandenong will happen on the 3rd Saturday of every
month and our first event is on Saturday, 15th of September 2012.
3. Onam Celebrations
Onam is celebrated at Amritapuri
every year. It is a joyous remembrance of the golden rule of mythical
king Mahabali, who is supposed to
have ruled Kerala a very long time
ago. During his reign, there was no
deceit or anxiety, all people were
treated equally and were full of joy.
The gods felt threatened by his popularity and sought the help of Lord
Vishnu to help them curb his reign. The Lord took this opportunity to test
Mahabali’s devotion and charity. He went disguised as a young Brahmin
boy, Vamana and asked for three steps of land. The King agreed to the
seemingly simple request. Vamana expanded to cosmic proportions and
in two steps covered the earth and the skies. He then asked the King for
space to put his third step. King Mahabali
realized
this was the Lord and humbly
asked Vamana to put the third step
on his head, destroying his ego
and sense of doer-ship. The Lord
placed his foot on the righteous
king’s head and pushed him
down to the netherworld. He
also granted a boon that the king
could visit his beloved land and people once a year.
We are celebrating Onam at the Melbourne Ashram as a Fundraiser
