PATIENT CARE
Pediatrics
by
Gulf
the
Annual Conference on Advances in Pediatrics
Our goal is to provide personal, comprehensive care of
the highest quality for children and families in ways that
consistently surpass expectations. Clinicians treat patients
primarily in the Pediatric Inpatient Unit and PICU at John
Sealy Hospital and in our Island and mainland clinics. Our
ability to provide support to referring physicians includes
a new Pediatric Specialty Center in League City, providing
multidisciplinary care in a state-of-the-art setting. In recent
years, we have extended our services to both UTMB
patients and patients seen by regional pediatricians, with
Pediatric After Hours Urgent Care Clinics in League City and
in Galveston. In addition to treating patients at UTMB Health
locations, our specialists see patients in San Antonio, El
Paso and Beaumont, Texas.

EDUCATION
A tradition of excellence in medical education is a core
value for the Department of Pediatrics. Established in 1924,
UTMB is home to the first pediatric residency training
program in Texas. Our faculty participate in the education
of medical students, residents, and subspecialty fellows.
The goals of the pediatric experiences in medical school are
for students to develop both the basic skills for caring for
infants, children, and adolescents, as well as to appreciate
the influence of growth and development on diagnosis and
management of illness. A focus on family-centered care is
an important element for our learners at all stages.

RESEARCH
The Department of Pediatrics has a long history of basic,
clinical and translational research. Major areas of research
include respiratory viral infections, asthma and allergic
disease pathogenesis, lung injury, herpes virus infections,
infectious causes of cancer, genetics of metabolic diseases,
perinatal epidemiology and environmental medicine. An
important goal of our research Programs is to help develop
more pediatricians and scientists who are dedicated to
advancing the application of basic science knowledge to the
health problems important to children.
