Happy December!
As I write this message, it's snowing like crazy in Roanoke. Yes -- it's November 26, and
I'm late getting my December 'message' to our wonderful secretary and newsletter
editor, Cathy. BUT -- what a great opportunity to write to the ski club membership -while it's snowing.
As of yesterday, the Ski Club's holiday party on Saturday, December 6, has sold out.
With 120 tickets sold, I believe this is our biggest crowd yet for the December party.
Thank you for being open to changing the holiday party this year to a catered event at
Hidden Valley Country Club. We enjoy exploring new events and mixing things up a
bit from time to time. We will continue to offer 'tried and true' events and activities along with some fresh new ideas.
Speaking of fresh, new ideas -- can you believe we are already talking about and planning the end-of-year
April trip conclusion party? Here we are in December - with our first ski trip approximately 6 weeks away,
and we are already planning our April meeting that will close out the 2014-2015 membership
year. John Schrader is heading up a committee for this event, so please contact John if you're interested in
participating in the planning of this event. I can hear the horses whinny from here. (Yes, that is a hint on a
proposed theme.)
While our holiday party is being held at Hidden Valley Country Club, our January meeting will be moved due
to the club's closure during the first 2 weeks of January. The board has elected to remain at Hidden Valley
for the remainder of the 2014-2015 year; and, we were very pleased with the food selection and
presentation at the November meeting, which also received positive comments from those in attendance.
Thank you for your patience during this time. (January meeting place, to be determined.)
Last, I'd like to THANK EVERYONE who contributes to make this club a success. From volunteering at events
like GoFest, to leading an activity, to offering to help decorate for a party, to leading a trip and all of the
many other contributions from the membership. It really does take a 'village' (hmmm....members), to
make our club the fun, outdoor enthusiast club that it is.
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

Pretty Faces - The Story of a Skier Girl
from Unicorn Picnic Productions
Pretty Faces is a film celebrating women who thrive in the snow. The concept
for the film was originated by professional big mountain skier and SheJumps
co-founder, Lynsey Dyer with the objective of giving women and girls, young and old, a source of
inspiration through a unique look at what is possible when boundaries are broken, dreams captured and
friendships cultivated. In Lynsey’s words “I wanted to give young girls something positive to look up to…I
wanted to give them their Blizzard of Ahhs, Ski Movie or High Life, but done in a way that also shows the
elegance, grace, community and style that is unique to women in the mountains.”
Despite women’s presence in:
- 40% of the skiing population and
- 30% of the adventure sports film viewership
…..only 14% of athletes in major ski film were female this past season. Additionally, last season’s 14%
was record female representation, up from 9% the previous season.
We see this as an opportunity to provide an inspiring documentary ski film told from a female’s
perspective to connect with and celebrate skiing female population.
Although skiing is the focus of the film, we hope to showcase women’s on-hill success-from professional
skiers to recreational enthusiasts-to inspire girls of all ages to pursue their dreams, walk the path less
traveled, and reach their fullest potential, whatever path they choose.
Our Mission
Young girls need more positive role models to offer then an alternative to the world of skinny jeans,
reality TV and fashion magazines. We aim to provide a positive source of inspiration for young girls first
and foremost. The lessons learned on the mountain parallel those learned by many women who take the
path less traveled. Our documentary ski film (Pretty Face) will showcase women walking that path to
deliver the message “If she can do it, then so can I.”
