June 1, 2014
From the Desk of Tom Wood,
Superintendent/Elementary Principal
As you read this we have officially completed the 2013-2014
school year! Each year it amazes me how fast it goes, how
much the kids grow, and the work that gets completed by staff
and students alike. This is also the end of my first year in a
new dual role as elementary principal and superintendent. I
have had the opportunity to work with many members of our
community, staff, and students. Overall, this has been an
amazing chance to learn in a wonderful environment. I
especially want to thank all of the parents, community
members, Board members, staff, and students who have been
so supportive. This year has affirmed my decision to make
MSTM the school where I want to stay. I look forward to
working with more of you in the future.
This month I am using my portion of the newsletter to inform
you of some changes and improvements being made to our
school. This summer our wireless network solution is being
replaced and upgraded. This will continue to support our
addition of more wireless devices and maintain the 1:1
computer initiative in the high school. Another less visible
improvement will be the beginning of a boiler replacement
project. We have three that will be replaced, and the first one
will be done this summer. In addition to these bigger projects
our maintenance crews will be busy deep cleaning, waxing
floors, and preparing for another school year that will quickly
be upon us.
Since my last newsletter we have one more staff member who
has resigned, Mollie Scrivner. She has been a second grade
teacher here and will be greatly missed. This opening, along
with our other departures and the new preschool position
added will bring in a total of six new faces to the elementary.
We are very excited about the highly qualified and strong
candidates who have been hired. They include the following:




Jenna Fitzgerald, Preschool/Preschool Special
Education
Amanda Meacham, Preschool
Brett Flander, Elementary Special Education
Allison Grandfield, Elementary Special Education


Kelsey Nickel, 3rd Grade
Kathy Higgins, 4th Grade
I know these new teachers are excited to become a part of the
MSTM team, and many gave up other opportunities to do so.
Please help us welcome them as they begin to transition into
the building and community.
Thank you again for making this a successful school year. The
kids, families, and staff of MSTM are the ones who make our
vision possible: A caring community that nurtures individuals
to become productive lifelong learners.
Thank you for your continued support of MSTM!
From the Desk of Josh Moser,
Secondary Principal
“Everything has to come to an end, sometime.” – L. Frank
Baum, The Marvelous Land of Oz
The last few days of the 2013-2014 school year are winding
down, and the excitement for the prospects of summer is
palpable. The end of a school year is always cause for
reflection as much as it is cause for celebration. Being able to
look back on the successes & failures and the challenges &
triumphs of 180 days is no easy task considering all that we
manage to pack into a year at school. As noted in a newsletter
article earlier in the year, experience is not what teaches us; it
is reflecting on and analyzing those experiences that causes us
to truly learn. With this in mind, indulge me as I share three
sources of my learning from this year:
A system cannot policy its way to improvement. I would
say this is one of the most significant pieces of learning I have
encountered this year when it comes to leadership. The word
―policy‖ in and of itself has some far-reaching connotations in
terms of how the ideas contained within are presented – which
is something I didn’t realize until earlier this year. A policy is
imposing in that it dictates behavior, and in turn affects one’s
mindset. Rather than creating discord and fear by announcing
a new policy (or a draft of a new policy), the approach I
should have taken is to present the topic or focus of the policy
as a discussion of said topic or focus. It gives the impression
that the collective minds of the organization have been made
up, and thereby making one’s decision for them before they
have a chance to respond or even really think about it. In
short, presenting policies – even for public comments or
feedback – is akin to jumping the proverbial shark. Having
conversations and allowing ideas to organically formulate into
potential policies or changes in practice will become the norm.
Communication is absolutely essential – and incredibly
complicated. There is always a challenge in deciding what,
when, and how to communicate a message. Last month’s
newsletter article focused on this element in the form of email.
Other forms of electronic communication can be just as cloudy
or ire-inducing because they lack the emotion that
accompanies face-to-face communication, thereby making it
difficult to interpret its true meaning or intention. I have come
to appreciate meeting in-person with someone rather than
trying to solve things over the phone or the computer. Most
people would prefer not to use this approach because it can
feel confrontational or adversarial. While there is some truth
to this (depending on the situation), it is certainly more honest
and straightforward than trying to read between the lines of an
email, tweet, or anything else. In spite of my own admitted
reliance on phone calls and emails to get things done, I will
always welcome and make time for people who come to see
me in person regardless of what else is going on.
Remember that we are all here for the students. The
bottom line is everyone in a school community – students,
teachers, staff, administrators, and parents – want the same
thing: a successful learning experience for the students. What
tends to get in the way is the hang-up on the different opinions
as to how to arrive at that. We stress the importance of
collaboration and building relationships as the means to this
success, and this cannot be truer than in the field of education.
Not everyone shares the same philosophies, engages in the
same practices, or seeks opportunities for improvement. There
are going to be times of disagreement. This is OK. We should,
however, be able to discuss things in an open, non-threatening,
non-judgmental way to help develop understanding of
different points of view. This should be accompanied with an
open mind, rather than seeking chances to only poke holes in
or otherwise diminish someone’s ideas, perceptions, or
experiences. This should be a universal truth – especially in a
people-centered profession like education.
I have enjoyed this first year as 7-12 principal and greatly
value the many people that make Martensdale-St. Marys such
a special place to work. I will continue to learn, to gain
perspective, to seek input, and to find ways to make our great
school even greater.
Congratulations to the Class of 2014
It was with simultaneous pride and bitter sweetness that we
bid farewell to the seniors during our commencement
exercises on Sunday, May 18th. The 32 students who
participated in graduation are now off in the world beginning
their new lives. I enjoyed being their teacher and principal for
their time in high school, and I wish them all the very best of
luck.
Secondary Staff Changes
In other bittersweet news, Alison Meier (7-12 Family and
Consumer Science) has accepted a job in another district for
the 2014-2015 school year. Alison has been at MSTM for six
years and has been involved in many committees and
improvement efforts. She has been a tremendous asset to our
school and she will be greatly missed in the coming years.
In other staffing news, I am pleased to welcome Michael
Tiano to the MSTM district as a new 7-12 mathematics
instructor. Mr. Tiano will be in his first year of teaching after
serving his country in the National Guard and having worked
in the private sector for a number of years. His experience and
perspective will be an important addition to our school.
I will be at school for most of June and then taking a few
weeks off in July to prepare for next year. Please keep in
contact with any questions, concerns, or suggestions, and I am
already looking forward to 2014-2015. Have a great summer!

Lion’s Club Peace Poster Contest
Each year, Lions clubs around the world proudly sponsor the
Lions International Peace Poster Contest in local schools and
youth groups. This art contest for kids encourages young
people worldwide to express their visions of peace. For more
than 25 years, millions of children from nearly 100 countries
have participated in the contest.
Entries were judged for originality, artistic merit and
portrayal of this year’s contest theme, ―Our World, Our
Future.‖
Posters advance through several judging levels: local, district,
multiple district and international. At the international level,
judges from the art, peace, youth, education and media
communities select one grand prize winner and 23 merit award
winners.
The Martensdale Lions Club worked with MSTM elementary
participants to design posters for the contest.
The
Martensdale Lions Club judged the posters and awarded cash
prizes to the winners.
Tuesday, May 27th our 5/6 students will entertain us in their
Talent Show at 2:00 p.m. in the high school gym. I’m looking
forward to a fun way to wrap up 2013-2014!
This summer, please consider joining the Music Boosters and
supporting the music education of all students in grades PK12. I hope to print your name on the next concert program!
Have a fun summer filled with music!

Summer Reading Tips for Parents
http://www.ldonline.org/article/36/
By: Coordinated Campaign for Learning Disabilities (1997)
Efforts should be made during the summer to help children
sustain reading skills, practice reading and read for enjoyment.
Reading builds visualization, thinking and language abilities.
Taking the time to read with your child can help you evaluate
your child's reading skills. If you discover that your child is
having trouble with reading, he or she may have a learning
disability. 80% of children with a learning disability have
difficulty with basic reading and language. But early
identification of such a disability gives a child the chance to
develop ways to learn how to read effectively, and skills to
lead a successful and productive life. A recent National
Institutes of Health study showed that 67% of young students
at risk for reading difficulties became average or above
average readers after receiving help in the early grades.
1st Place: Maddy Stott, 2nd Place: Kaley Verwers,
Place: Thomas Gyles.
3rd
Parents should remember that children need free time in the
summer to relax and enjoy the pleasures of childhood. So
summer reading should be fun. Following are a few tips to
make reading enjoyable for your children this summer:
1. Read aloud together with your child every day.
From the Desk of Mrs. Clark,
Vocal Music
Congratulations to our graduating seniors in band and chorus!
They are Jacob Herrera in band, Jennice Croy in chorus and
Kaitlyn Belieu in both band and chorus. We will miss you!
Congratulation to our junior high and upper elementary
students who participated in solo/ensemble festival here at
MSTM! Students worked hard and all earned superior (1)
ratings.
Make it fun by reading outdoors on the front steps, patio, at
the beach or park. Also, let your children read to you. For
younger children, point out the relationship between words
and sounds.
2. Set a good example!
Parents must be willing to model behavior for their children.
Keep lots of reading material around the house. Turn off the
TV and have each person read his or her book, including mom
and dad.
3. Read the same book your child is reading and discuss it.
This is the way to develop habits of the mind and build
capacity for thought and insight.
4. Let kids choose what they want to read, and don't turn
your nose up at popular fiction.
It will only discourage the reading habit.
5. Buy books on tape, especially for a child with a learning
disability.
Listen to them in the car, or turn off the TV and have the
family listen to them together.
6. Take your children to the library regularly.
Most libraries sponsor summer reading clubs with easy-toreach goals for preschool and school-age children. Check the
library calendar for special summer reading activities and
events. Libraries also provide age appropriate lists for summer
reading.

7. Subscribe, in your child's name, to magazines like Sports
Illustrated for Kids, Highlights for Children, or National
Geographic World.
Encourage older children to read the newspaper and current
events magazines, to keep up the reading habit over the
summer and develop vocabulary. Ask them what they think
about what they've read, and listen to what they say.
8. Ease disappointment over summer separation from a
favorite school friend by encouraging them to become pen
pals.
Present both children with postcards or envelopes that are
already addressed and stamped. If both children have access to
the Internet, email is another option.
9. Make trips a way to encourage reading by reading aloud
traffic signs, billboards, notices.
Show your children how to read a map, and once you are on
the road, let them take turns being the navigator.
10. Encourage children to keep a summer scrapbook.
Tape in souvenirs of your family's summer activities picture
postcards, ticket stubs, photos. Have your children write the
captions and read them and read them aloud as you look at the

1) Principal’s Report
Mr. Wood
Mr. Wood announced a 94% PK-6
attendance for the Spring Parent Teacher
Conferences. Mr. Wood took an informal
survey on whether or not to continue spring
conferences and most people indicated they
did not feel it was necessary.
Mr. Wood informed the board that he only
received one call about the school calendar
and that next year we will better advertise all
public meetings.
Student Recognition: Kaitlyn Belieu, Kyla
Morris, Corajean Clemenson, Carrie
Schultz, Gentry Davidson, Stephanie
Seymour, Baylee Holt, Dani Trom, Savanah
Husted, Robbie Vaught, Justine McKeever,
Sarah Walker
Mr. Moser reviewed the 2013-2014 Iowa
Assessments results, goals and if the goals
were met. He provided a snap shot of
student skills, writing components and skills
that are assesses and others that are not.
Discussion was made on the math scores
and what the impact of Every Day Math on
the results. The administration went over
several variables that might have affected
the results and they will be working with the
teachers. They will break it down by
student and analyze certain areas of reading
and comprehension.
Mr. Moser experienced a dip in Parent
Teacher Conferences in the secondary, just
below 18%. He is finding out that many
schools in the POI Conference are doing
away with the spring conferences due to the
increase in communication between teachers
and JMC.
Mr. Moser presented the recommendation of
adjusting graduation requirements due to the
push from State and Federal resources to
increase student literacy of our students.
He recommended making Computer
Applications and Life Skills a mandatory
credit.
Mr. Moser presented the summary of the
semester test policy. He received pros and
con from the secondary staff during the
March Professional Development day.
Some of the positive elements of the current
policy by the secondary staff were: promotes
attendance, fewer tests to grade, students try
on standardized tests, increased productivity,
students need incentives. Some of the
negative elements of the current policy
included: complex system for exemptions,
can hurt the overall grade, not reflective of
college practices, policy is discriminatory
toward special education and at risk
students, hurts lower-level students. Mr.
Moser will review again with staff at the
next staff meeting.
Mr. Wood announced that DARE
Graduation is being held on April 25th.
Officer Randy Spurr has recently been
promoted but continues to want to do this
program with us because of how important it
is.
Mr. Moser is close in hiring the 7-12 math
position. There were 24 applicants for this
position. He will bring recommendation to
the May board meeting.
2) Principal’s Report
Mr. Moser informed the Board that we did
not renew the Jostens contract for the
yearbook due to costs and customer issues.
Mr. Moser
The new contract will be with Wallsworth.
Community Service Day will be on May 9th.
Academics and Fine Arts Night will be May
13th.
3) Superintendent’s Report
Supt. Wood
Mr. Wood informed the Board that he will
be updating job descriptions for the district.
He presented three job descriptions for the
Board to approve tonight. He will make
them apart of the handbook and in the hiring
procedures.
Mr. Wood updated the Board on the
preschool situation. We currently have 46
students signed up for preschool in the fall.
Mr. Wood and staff members went over
many options of how to serve these students.
Mr. Wood recommended to the Board to add
a third section of preschool. He has found
the space that will accommodate 15
students. This would raise our capacity to
55 students. Discussion was made about the
risk to hire a teacher prior to registration.
The worst case scenario is that we lose some
of the 46 students before school starts and
then have three section s of smaller classes.
In early childhood classrooms this is
desirable and common.
The Board
discussed their board goal of ―Growing the
school‖. If the following year, we do not
have the numbers to keep three sections, the
administration will determine whether we
reduce staff or maybe move that teacher to
Title I. Discussions were made if the goal
was to breakeven financially for this
program and what is best for the kids and for
our school. Mr. Wood plans to have a
registration date for preschool with a deposit
to guarantee a spot and advertise earlier.
Mr. Wood presented to the Board members
a preliminary draft of possible hourly rental
fees for the use of the facilities. This will be
discussed at our next facilities meeting.

fundraising that we do. We cannot continue to do everything we do without you!
Please see the Music Booster sponsorship form below or email [email protected] and let us know that you are interested in
helping continue the Music Education that we support and what you would be willing to assist with. This could be anything from
volunteering to help serve refreshments at a concert, chaperoning an event, assisting with fundraising or providing any fundraising
ideas that you may have.
