FULL STEAM AHEAD INTO 2014 AND BEYOND
A new year is traditionally a time for looking ahead to
the future as well as back on what has been achieved in
the last twelve months.
‘In 2014 we are investing more than £500,000 in our marketing efforts to promote the Isle
of Man as a destination to those living in the UK and Ireland. We aim to attract more
visitors to events throughout the year, such as Island of Culture and, of course, our major
sporting events; the TT, Festival of Motorcycling and Southern I00. Although such
significant investment is, of course, aimed at increasing awareness of our services and
generating business, one of the most important goals each year is to promote the Island
itself, bringing benefits to each sector of Manx tourism – hotels, restaurants, leisure
facilities, tourist attractions and more.
There is no doubt that 2013 was challenging for the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company
on several fronts. But it was also a good year with much achieved for both the Company
and the Island.
In July we completed a financial restructuring of the Company, significantly reducing our
level of debt, following negotiations with the Company’s syndicate of lenders. This was
achieved without the need for Government funding or support and has now placed the
Company on a stable footing for the long term.
Both Ben-my-Chree and Manannan showed exceptional technical reliability, helping
support the vital passenger and freight business, while September saw us investing in the
freighter MV Arrow on a long-term charter, providing additional back-up as well as cover
for periods of overhaul and further capacity for the busy TT period.
Another significant development during 2013 was the first stage in delivering a new
£1 million website and reservations system, a local project that will continue behind the
scenes over the next 12 months.
Chief Executive Mark Woodward explains: ‘The most important benefit of the restructure
is that it places the Company on a sound financial footing as we look to the future and it
allows us to focus on developing the passenger and freight markets to and from the Island.
‘Stable and well invested shipping links are consistent with the Government’s aims of
providing the best possible range of services and prices for residents, visitors and
businesses.
‘The year ahead will see further investment. Ben-my-Chree will go into dry dock in May
for her biennial overhaul, during which the main lounge will be refurbished, and works to
Heysham Terminal are due to start later this year, continuing through to 2015.
‘We have been serving the Isle of Man for 184 years and want to continue that long-term
commitment - maintaining frequency of sailings, focusing wherever possible on creating
jobs for the local workforce and avoiding the need to make any cutbacks in these more
challenging economic times.
‘Now that the refinancing has been completed we have begun the process of assessing the
longer term - it is clear that the most significant investment in the coming years will be
replacement vessels for Ben-my-Chree and Manannan.
‘The Ben is 16 years old and is our most reliable ship ever, and she will of course
comfortably exceed the normal expected lifespan of around 25 years if necessary.
However, we would ideally prefer to see the investment brought forward. A new built-forpurpose vessel will require years of planning and construction, and our ideal scenario
would be to move ahead with that project as soon as possible. A replacement for
Manannan, to follow Ben-my-Chree, will be another significant project requiring, together,
investment in excess of £50 million.
‘Whatever the future holds, we are committed to serving the Isle of Man, residents and
businesses alike, and ensuring secure and reliable links with the UK and Ireland, something
that is particularly important at a time when the Island’s air routes are under scrutiny and
showing little sign of long-term stability.’

WHERE WILL 2014 TAKE YOU?
Here we are in the New Year, and what a year it is shaping up to be!
There are special events, festivals and celebrations happening all over the British Isles in
the next 12 months, and they are only a ferry journey away with the Steam Packet
Company. With numerous special offers to make your trip more affordable, there’s no
reason to miss out.
For sports fans, 2014 promises to be particularly memorable, especially in July.
The legendary Tour de France gets underway on July 5th, with the first three stages in
England – the first two, from Leeds to Harrogate and York to Sheffield, being held in
Yorkshire, in honour of Sir Bradley Wiggins’ historic Tour victory in 2012. No doubt
many fans from the Island will want to line the routes, or maybe follow the Tour on
their own bicycles, which can be carried free of charge when accompanied by a fare
paying passenger.

For golfers, Royal Liverpool is the venue for the Open Championship (July 17th-20th),
with a strong British contingent hoping to usurp reigning champion, American Phil
Mickelson. Maybe you fancy a few rounds yourself, and you can bring your clubs when
you travel with the Steam Packet Company.
Plus, of course, everyone is looking forward to the 20th Commonwealth
Games in Glasgow (July 23rd-August 3rd), when what promises to be a
very strong Isle of Man team will be competing on the world stage
across 17 sports. Why not make sure you’re there to cheer them on?
And for motorcycle fans, why not make that trip to the Ulster Grand Prix (August
13th-16th), visit the British MotoGP round (Silverstone, August 31st) or just take in
some of the British Superbike racing at Oulton Park (May 5th and August 10th) – and
with the Steam Packet Company you can take your own wheels.

Whether it is Crufts, the Chelsea Flower Show or Edinburgh’s Fringe Festival you fancy in 2014, the Steam
Packet Company can take you there. With venues like the arenas in Manchester and Liverpool so close, you
could catch your favourite singer in concert – Gary Barlow and Katy Perry are among the stars at the Echo
Arena this year – and, of course, plan some great getaways with the family to places like the Lake District, North
Wales and further afield.

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company is proud to support the Island and its people
Once again we will be supporting many Island-based sports stars and organisations
over the coming 12 months, including motorcyclists Conor Cummins and Dan Kneen,
as well as a number of rising young stars such as Ozzey Madey, who competed in and
won the Thundersport Formula 400 Championship in 2013. We are also proud to be
supporting a number of other local sports people, including golfer Emma Harris, cyclist
Josh Knight and the Manx Youth Sailing Squad, all of whom travel regularly to compete
in the UK and beyond. We wish all of our sporting stars a successful 2014.
As we do each year, the Steam Packet Company has planned an extensive campaign to
market the Isle of Man as a destination for those living in the UK and Ireland, which we
hope will attract visitors to events throughout the year, such as Island of Culture and,
of course, our major sporting events like the TT, Festival of Motorcycling and Southern
I00, which we are delighted to be sponsoring for the 15th successive year.
This year our marketing campaigns will cover print and digital media, including magazine
supplements in The Telegraph, Guardian, The Times and The Observer, specialist
magazines such as Country Walking and BBC Countryfile, general interest publications
such as Saga magazine, popular websites and leading social networks.
Marketing and Online Manager Renée Caley said: ‘The next 12 months promise to be
memorable for the Island. The arts, cultural and sporting scenes in the Island are
becoming busier and busier year-on-year, so much so that it’s rare these days to find a
weekend without a fantastic event taking place!
‘Bookings for the TT, Festival of Motorcycling and Southern 100 are up on previous
years for this time of year and it all bodes well for what should prove to be a superb
2014 for the Island.’

VERY COMPETITIVE!
At the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, we are always eager to
hear customer feedback and are dedicated to providing the best
possible service for passengers. We recently conducted online
research into 2014 fare comparisons across the Irish Sea and found
that we remain one of the most competitive companies.
During 2014 the Steam Packet Company will be offering more than 900,000 special
offer seats and the vast majority of people travelling with us will benefit from these
special offers. Chief Executive Mark Woodward said: ‘We carry out onboard surveys
each year to ensure that the service we are offering to our passengers meets our
standards and their expectations. Our most recent survey confirmed that the majority
of passengers believe that our services offer value for money: (Fig 1).

on the front cover of our 2014 brochure.
In October, we launched a Facebook competition giving people the
chance to see their picture appear in our 2014 brochure (pictured
right). We received more than 500 entries from as far afield as Canada,
Australia, Switzerland and the USA.
There were many stunning images capturing the beauty of the Isle of
Man, and others featuring our vessels Ben-my-Chree and Manannan. It
really showed just what the Island has to offer to visitors and those of
us lucky enough to live here.
Chief Executive Mark Woodward said: ‘We are hugely grateful to
everyone that entered our competition and are so pleased that so
many people were interested in getting involved.
‘We are dedicated to promoting the Island as the perfect holiday
destination and we knew that there are many people, locals and
visitors, who are just as keen to let people know what a spectacular
place it is. This was the perfect opportunity for people to see their
photo in print and to help us encourage visitors to the Isle of Man
and boost its tourism industry.’
