2016 POA Board Election
Schedule
Three of the five seats on the
LOFS POA Board of Directors
are up for election this year.
Here are the key dates:
• Wednesday, June 1
– Thursday, June 30 Candidacy petitions will be
available at the POA office
for all residents wishing to be
listed on the ballot.
• Friday, July 1 – Friday, July
15 – Completed petitions may
be turned in at the POA office. The order the ballots are
printed, listing the candidates’
names, will be determined by
a blind draw only if there are
more than one person turn-
ing in their petitions on the
same day to the POA office,
and documentation verified as
complete and valid.
• Monday, August 1 –
Candidates Night issues forum at 7:30 p.m. in the LOFS
Clubhouse ballroom.
• Friday, August 5 – Ballots
will be mailed to all property
owners of record.
• Wednesday, September 7
– Polls closed; ballots must
be received by 9 a.m. at the
Crown Point Post Office
box. Ballots will be counted
beginning at 7 p.m. in the
LOFS West Lounge.
• Property Owners have the
option to mail in their election
ballots or drop them inside a
locked ballot box that will
be located inside the LOFS
Clubhouse. Ballots may be
dropped inside the ballot
box anytime the Clubhouse
is open. The last day to drop
them inside the box will be
Wednesday, September 7,
by noon. The election chairperson will be the only person that can unlock the box
to retrieve ballots the day of
verification and counting on
September 7.
• Saturday, October 15–
LOFS POA Annual Meeting
at 10 a.m. in the Clubhouse
Ballroom. Newly elected directors will be sworn in.

Lakes of the Four Seasons
POA dues for 2016 were
due March 1 with a grace period until May 1. If you have
not paid this year’s dues,
please make arrangements
as soon as possible. Dues not
paid by May 1 of each year
are considered delinquent
and there will be a $50 late
fee charged. The Board of
Directors approved a motion
to deactivate the Bar Codes
after May 1 in accord with
LOFS By-Laws.
It’s that time of the year
again for mowing, trimming and other maintenance
throughout the community
for the Golf Maintenance
and Operations departments.
Please be careful and slow
down when encountering the
maintenance staff on a mower or work cart.
Spring leaf collections for
the entire community have
been completed for the season. Spring branch collections for the Lake County
portion of the community
have also been completed.

of Sts. Constantine & Helen
Greek Orthodox Cathedral,
located at 8000 Madison
Street in Merrillville, is
sponsoring its 9th annual
Benefit Spaghetti Dinner
for the Ross Township Food
Pantry.
Every Friday, parishioners
volunteer to distribute food
to hundreds of needy families. Last year an average of
500 families per month were
served by the Ross Township
Food Pantry. We are asking
for support in any way possible including advertising,
donations, support by attendance, or the purchase of
carry-out dinners.
The public is invited to
join for lunch or an evening
of food and fellowship.
Participants may also support a raffle for the Helping
Hand Fund, a Cathedral
sponsored fund that financially assists families with
other necessities in life; dine
in or carry-out spaghetti with
choice of toppings, meat,
marinara or Greek salad and
roll with dessert; a Greek
bake sale; and vendor and
basket raffle. Pre-sale tickets for adults cost $8 and
children under 12, $5. Door
price tickets for adults are $9
and children under 12, $5.

with the exception of open
house signs, which are only
allowed on Saturdays and
Sundays if the proper paper-

The summer Concerts at
the Clubhouse will begin on
Thursday June 2 with the
Carlos Ramos Band; they
play R&B, Motown and
Funk. There will be 12 concerts this year. The first 11
will continue to take place
on Thursday evening’s beginning at 7 p.m. The 12th
and final concert will take
place on Friday, August 19,
also beginning at 7 p.m. The
Clubhouse will not be providing alcoholic beverages
outside for the concerts. Just
a reminder, please use the
provided containers for your
trash and recyclables as this
helps with cleanup.
I am requesting that all
residents refrain from dumping leaves, branches and
grass clippings in the POA
greenspace areas. We provide branch and leaf collections in the spring and fall.
You are also allowed to put
small bundles of branches in
with your trash along with
small amounts of grass clippings. The maintenance departments would greatly appreciate it.
I have received a few calls
this spring from residents
having issues with cats running loose around their properties. Pets must be leashed
or under equivalent control
at all times; including cats.
If you are having problems
with any loose pets around
your property, please contact
the POA office at 219-9882581 or the Security department at 219-988-2111.
The POA Office will be
closed Tuesday, May 3.
The Clubhouse will be used
as a polling center for the
Primary Election.

The Keen-Agers will have
their May meeting on the 19th
at the LOFS Clubhouse. The
bar will open at noon with
a delicious luncheon served
at 1 p.m. Entertainment is
planned for 2:00; after a short
meeting and a 50/50 raffle,
adjournment will be around
3 p.m.
Besides the third Thursday
of the month meetings, the
club enjoys many activities,
such as casinos, plays, boat
rides and bus trips. The yearly
membership fee when available is $22 and the monthly
luncheon cost is $14.

their fun affordable.

Seasons pool will be open
on Memorial Day weekend
beginning on Saturday, May
28, through Monday, May
30, from 12 to 8 p.m. (lap
swim from 8 a.m. to noon).

Franciscan St. Anthony
Health-Crown Point will offer a series diabetes classes
on Tuesdays and Wednesdays
in May, and June. Classes
will help provide participants
with individual meal plans designed to meet specific needs
along with information in accordance with the American
Diabetes Association standards.
Sessions will take place
from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays
and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays.

The LOFS House & Garden Club has profiled one
member each month, and these interesting and
accomplished women were the first three. Can

doesn’t get home until 8:30 or 9 p.m. on school
nights, and which one was Uncle Sam in a Fourth
of July parade on a 90 degree plus day? Pictured

enjoying a bit more of the
outdoors. With springs arrival
the hopes of warmer days
are just around the corner. If
you’re anything like me the
sight of flowers or anything
with color for that matter
makes your eyes dart and
your heart race.
I have it on good authority
that this year’s plant sale will
have a variety of hanging
baskets, English gardens,
and flats. Something new
this year is beautiful colored
patio planters, and other new
planter designs with striking
arrangements. A must for
every one of our plant sales are
the 12 and 14 inch geraniums
in patio planters. I have a
geranium that I overwintered
from last year’s plant sale
growing ever so beautifully in
my dining room. Thank you
to Patricia German, Sandy
Hostetter, and Nenita Powers
for visiting the grower and
picking out the plants.

May 7, beginning at 9 a.m.

It’s a beautiful day; you
start thinking about those
summertime

and

is warming up and it’s a perfect day. A perfect day to
finally get out of the house
and tend to those overdue
chores that you’ve put off all
winter. Like washing the car
and making those few minor

with an average depth of 8.8
feet. You can find a maximum
depth of 20 feet in the southwest corner of the lake but the
majority of our depth measurements were in the 10-15
foot range. We use the phrase
“carrying capacity” to indicate
certain amounts of whatever it

out if we are damaging the
lake long term.

the weekend boaters on Lake
Holiday may have noticed
our lake patrollers turning
on their lights and blocking
traffic in the narrows off of
Beachview Ct. This area is the
danger zone and when we see
too many boats on the lake we
will close down high speed
traffic for up to 30 minutes.

or your lawn so wastewater
doesn’t flow into the street.
Working with Motors
Motors must be maintained if you want them to
work properly. Oil, gasoline,
brake fluid, degreasers, and
antifreeze are a few of the
products you need. All of
these products contain chemicals that can harm aquatic
life if they get into a stream,
lake, or wetland. One gallon
of used oil can ruin a million
gallons of fresh water—a
year’s supply for 50 people.
If you accidentally spill
these products on the ground
when you’re working, clean
for weed control on POA
parks, road closures for sewer
line repairs, or what road will
be getting paved and when.

Spinnaker Group helping put Winfield and Lakes of the Four Seasons on the map
The new detailed, full-size
map of the Winfield/LOFS
area is now in production and
will soon be available. Seven
thousand copies will be
printed and distributed in the
community thru the advertisers on the map. Additional
copies will also be available at the Town of Winfield
Government Center, the
LOFS Property Owners
Association, the Chamber
Office, and the South Shore
Visitors Center.
The map is the brainchild
of Bill Stack, a resident of
LOFS since 1998 and the
owner of a marketing company called the Spinnaker
Group.
“Four Seasons has 28
miles of roads and 13 parks,”
said Stack. “And Winfield
has experienced tremendous
growth over the past few
years, with new subdivisions
popping up all over the place.
Finding your way can be
difficult even for those of us
who have lived here for some
time.”
The four-color map will
be approximately two feet by
three feet, folding to 8.5x11
inches. One side of the map
will include all the communities from Randolph west to
Colorado. The other side will
cover all the communities
from Randolph east to 725W.
The north and south boundaries are 101st to 129th.
The detail is important because the map has a two-fold
purpose. It’s not only to show
people how to get around in
the Winfield/Four Seasons
area, it’s for people to discover this community in the
first place.

The 2016 golf season is off
to an up and down start; 35
degrees on Monday and 70
degrees on Friday. Rain has
been above normal so far, but
I expect it to slow down later
in the month.
The early warm up has ev-
erything growing about three
weeks ahead of schedule.
Crabgrass control needs to
be applied earlier this year.
After the crabgrass control
is applied you need to wait
at least 16 weeks before any
seeding can take place, unless you mix the seed with
soil like divot mix in your

Golf Tip of the Month –
Curing the Yips on your
Chips
Of all the troubles in
golf, ‘yips’ certainly rank
up there at the top with the
dreaded ‘shank’. As golfers
age, both the mental and the
physical aspects of the game
become more challenging
and naturally golfers will
begin to compensate in their
swing. The yips are simply
a combination of a lack
of physical continuation
because of a mental thought
of “creating” a swing.
When I see players that
struggle with the yips on chip
shots, 9 times out of 10, I
will see the players lead arm

well. I have already sprayed
the golf course and parks for
weeds, crabgrass, and grubs.
The early start has me
worried about a hot, long
summer like 2012. We have
been preparing for a hot summer since last fall. Applying
topdressing sand and gypsum to the tees and fairways
last fall and this spring will
help the water penetrate the
soil much faster. The faster
the water passes through the
soil profile the better chance
of survival during high stress
times. We will continue to
spike the fairways when the
weather is forecast to be hot
and wet. This is the best cultural practice we can do for
the health of the fairways.
The first major project for
the season has been completed. Aerification of the
greens, tees, and fairways is
finished and healing nicely.
Like in years past we will not
be core aerifing this fall. The
golf season is short enough
without disturbing play twice
a year. I am happy to report
that according to the soil
test our organic matter went
down compared to last year.
The small changes that I
made to the agronomic plan
helped the greens roll faster
and reduced the organic matter. This season I plan on
topdressing the greens on a
more regular basis. This will
speed up the greens, smooth
them out, reduces organic
matter and helps protect the
crown of the plant.
Next on the project list is
the planting of several trees
on the golf course and at the
end of the driving range. This
is an attempt to replace some
of the trees we lost from insects. The stumps have also
been ground out and filled
with soil and seed. The next
few months I only plan on
completing several small
projects. I do not want to disturb the playing surface. Any
major projects will have to
wait until after Labor Day.
The first greens committee meeting will be Monday,
May 2, at 6 p.m. at my shop.
We have relocated to the old
operation building next to the
old golf maintenance building. Everyone is welcome to
attend. You don’t have to be a
member of the committee to
be there. This is an opportunity to voice your opinion in
a friendly environment.

anniversary season will be
a great one and I have a

will be holding its meeting
on Tuesday, May 10 at 7 p.m.

Hole.
There will be a fishing
tournament on Sunday, May
1, on Big Bass Lake. This
will be a trolling motor only
tournament. A second tournament will be held on Lake
Holiday on Saturday, May
21. Both tournaments will
start at 6 a.m..Cost is $70 per

to present their newest community outreach project, the
Community Garden. It is 1200
square feet of raised garden
beds where they will be planting and harvesting vegetables
this summer to share with the
local community. There will
be tomatoes, peppers, green
beans, potatoes, strawberries,
many herbs, and much more.
Starting in July, there will
be a free farmer’s market
which will be open on specific
days. All the produce will be
offered free to anyone who
attends the market. A pumpkin patch is also planned for a

of Four Seasons. Volunteers
and donations to support the
project will be welcome, and
all sponsors of $200 or more
will be recognized on garden
signs and with flyers from our
farmer’s market.
Planting is scheduled
for May 14. Volunteers are
needed to help that day and

The ballparks in Porter
County previously known
simply as the campgrounds,
has been renamed and dedicated “Cleveland Park,” in
honor of Harold Cleveland,
its staunchest supporter.
Harold now has been
Maintenance Superintendent
for over twenty years and
continues to work quietly
throughout the community
maintaining our amenities.
The comment most made by
visitors here is how well the
community is maintained
and to a large extent, this is a
credit to Harold.
He relates how over twenty years ago he came out here
from Crown Point to deliver
seed and was offered the
job. From there he went on
to develop the golf course
and maintain POA property.
The golf course is now maintained by a greenskeeper.
“Now it takes two people
to do the job that Harold did,”
said Community Manager
Steve Furlong. “He is the
only employee that I have to
tell go home,” said Furlong.
“Time Plus Labor Equals
Thanks” was the inscription on the clock presented to LOFS Maintenance
Superintendent

Cleveland.
The Property Owners
Association Board and the
Fields and Concessions
Board showed their appreciation for Cleveland’s 20
years of service by naming
the sports complex near the
campground,
“Cleveland
Park”.
The complex includes
two soccer fields, two baseball fields, and a concession
stand. Plans call for future
expansion. A new scoreboard
bears the name “Cleveland
Park.”
“I never thought this would
happen,” Cleveland said. “It’s
a big surprise.”
“Years ago, these fields
were nothing but a dump,” he
said.
Cleveland has worked
to make the area ready for
LOFS children to play on
“The children are what we
are here for,” he said.
The idea to dedicate the
park to Cleveland came from
the Field and Concession
Board, which is made up of
representatives of the soccer,
boys’ baseball, and the girls’
softball clubs. This involves
about 700 children. The POA
Board quickly seconded the
idea.
“We realize that without
Harold Cleveland’s dedication, hard work and loyalty,
we would not have as nice
a facility,” said Mary Steen,
