ST. CHARLES COUNTRY CLUB
HISTORY
Enthusiasm, dedication and commitment
A
group of 23 prominent businessmen gathered in 1904 to organize a country club outside the city of
Winnipeg. In 1905, construction began on the clubhouse and a golf course, laid out by Tom Bendelow,
seven miles west of the city on the banks of the Assiniboine River. Before the year ended, the club had entertained the Governor-General of Canada, Earl Grey, and one of its members, Douglas Laird, had scored the first
hole-in-one. It was an auspicious beginning to what would become an outstanding institution in the sporting
and social life of the community.
The country club pioneered polo in Manitoba, hosting teams from Canada and the U.S. Croquet, steeple
chasing, tennis, cricket and trapshooting were also popular. But golf became the preference of members.
In 1919, world-famous course architect Donald Ross was brought to St. Charles to rebuild the
original eighteen holes, the South Nine and the West Nine. High mounds and steep slopes
around bunkers and greens distinguish St. Charles, as they do more than 100 other Rossdesigned courses.
Another renowned architect, Dr. Alister MacKenzie, famous for his designs at Royal Melbourne in
Australia and Cypress Point in California, was hired in 1929 to lay out the North Nine. It opened in
1931, and the MacKenzie hallmark of blending the course into the natural
terrain was incorporated into St. Charles.
It has been the Club’s constant desire to maintain quality, and improvements have been made
through the years by noted Canadian architects Stanley Thompson, Norman Woods and Bill Robinson.
The country club has attracted leading business and professional people in Winnipeg. Enthusiasm for the game
of golf, a spirit of friendship, consideration for family and an appreciation for a quality private club are the
attributes shared by members of St. Charles.

Although the Club has an active golf membership, it isn’t difficult to reserve a teeoff time. With three nines in play at all times and a proven reservation system,
members’ times are readily accommodated. The club’s website offers a tee reservation system where ballots can be placed up to 7 days in advance. Or, slips are available in the Pro Shop for members to fill in the day, date, names in their group and
desired starting time. This information may also be telephoned to the Pro Shop.
Slips may be entered up to one week in advance. Draws are made 3 days in advance. Members who haven’t entered a draw
slip may contact the Pro Shop or access the website reservation system for any starting times still available.
A very active Ladies’ Section thrives at the Club, offering good companionship and all levels of competitiveness. Tuesday morning ladies golf is a St. Charles tradition.
Couples golf is very much part of the golfing scene, with special mixed events throughout the year, and the Junior program is
considered among the best in the city, introducing young people to the game and other Junior members.

pitching and bunker shots. A mammoth putting green spanning the front of the clubhouse provides a beautiful
setting for fine-tuning your putting stroke.

on pull or motorized carts prior to tee time.
The Pro Shop offers a complete selection of quality equipment, accessories and clothing. Members may charge to
their house accounts.
Fully-equipped, modern locker rooms in the main clubhouse are available for men and women playing members.
Each golfing member is assigned a full-sized locker, and all necessary toiletries are provided. Shoe cleaning for
street and golf shoes is an included service.
A rich past, a vibrant present
T
he Past: Some of the game’s greatest players, golf immortals and distinguished world figures have trod the
lush fairways of St. Charles and enjoyed its special ambience.
Harry Vardon played an exhibition game at the Club as did the talented and colourful Walter Hagen. The Duke of
Windsor, a life-long golf addict, played St. Charles when he was the much loved Prince of Wales.
The Canadian Open, a PGA Tour stop, brought many of North America’s best to St. Charles in 1952. Thirty years
later one of the first Senior Tour events was featured. This was the 1982 Peter Jackson Tournament, when the
Senior Tour was in it’s infancy. Notable participants for the event were “Slammin Sammy” Snead and Moe Norman. The course record was eclipsed by Bob Goalby, during play, with a one round score of 64. The Club hosted
most of the front-line tournaments played each year in Canada, starting with the Canadian Women’s Golf Championship in 1933. The Manitoba Open has been held at the Club on numerous occasions.
The first international victory for a Canadian golf team happened here at the Americas Golf Cup Team Match event
in 1965 as the Club hosted players from Mexico, the U.S. And Canada. The course was selected in 1992 to host the
19th du Maurier Ltd. Classic. As one of four major championships on the LPGA tour it attracted the top women
professional golfers in the world. Again in 2000 St. Charles was called upon to host the A T & T Canada Senior
Open. Jack Nicklaus graced this fine event by playing. 2010 saw the CN Canadian Womens Open where once again
top LPGA players challenged the course. Michelle Wie emerged the victor.
The Present: Several golfing groups meet virtually every day. The Club’s staff is pleased to direct new members to
the organizers of these groups.
