Risen Christ delivers a high quality, Catholic
education in a safe and nurturing environment
to over 300 students in south central Minneapolis.
Over 95 percent of the students qualify for free
or reduced lunch and over 77 percent of the
students are English learners. We have started
the first and only Spanish/English dual language
immersion program in the Archdiocese. More
than 90 percent of our graduates go on to the high school of their
choice, predominately local Catholic high schools. Educationally, through
the hard work of the faculty and staff, the achievement gap for our
students is closing. Financially, we deliver that educational outcome on
a budget that is half the size of comparable public schools. We are
making a difference in the lives of the children and their families.
Where we are going . . .
Risen Christ school is an incredibly dynamic and vibrant community.
Our enrollment continues to grow as the awareness of Risen Christ
increases in the community. Our dual immersion program continues
to expand within the school. Our participation in the City Connects
program is creating a tailored support network for our students and
families. The Risen Christ community continues to work hard to create
the best possible environment for our students and their families.
Risen Christ cannot exist without the dedication of its faculty, staff,
volunteers and benefactors. On behalf of the Board of Directors,
thank you for your time, talent and support. Your generosity makes
a difference in the lives of our students and community.
Imagine the possibilities!
The Power of a Transformative Catholic Education
MICHAEL ROGERS
President
Since I started at Risen Christ at the beginning of July,
I have met with many community partners, organizations

and donors who are deeply invested in the mission of
our school. In these meetings, I am often told a story
or two about a current Risen Christ student or graduate.
I love hearing these stories because they are a testament
to the work we do here each and every day.
Recently, a former parent reached out to me about the impact that
Risen Christ had on her son, Anthony (Class of 2010):
Risen Christ was the best thing that happened to us. Academics were
rewarded and he had a sense of belonging. After Risen Christ, Anthony
went on to DeLaSalle High School and graduated in 2014. He was among

25 students in his graduating class that had a 4.0 GPA or higher all four
years (he was the only male student of color also to achieve this honor).
He was accepted last year at the University of Minnesota in the Engineering
School with a full academic scholarship for four years. Risen Christ taught
him so much and the teachers are awesome and really encouraged Anthony
in his drive for excellence. I am so grateful to everyone at Risen Christ for
helping mold my son into the man he is today. — S u s a n S t u r m s
Anthony’s story, and countless others like his, are why Risen Christ exists.
They illustrate the power of a transformative Catholic education.
Of course none of us can provide this education by ourselves. We rely on teachers,
staff, volunteers and benefactors to ensure that we are able to continue to provide
an education that benefits students like Anthony for many years to come.
Thank you for all you do to help us fulfill our mission!

Two-Way Immersion Program Begins at Risen Christ!

his year 40 kindergarten students learned core curriculum in both English and
Spanish as we rolled out the two-way immersion program. Risen Christ is the first
Catholic school in Minnesota to offer two-way immersion classes. We are one of only
19 Catholic schools throughout the country to offer this specialized programming.
At home, 77 percent of Risen Christ students speak a language other than English. In
most cases the language they speak and hear when they are not in school is Spanish. We
are capitalizing on the students’ native culture and language when we teach in both
languages. Research indicates that students in two-way immersion programs not only
learn English better than students in mono-lingual programs, but they are better prepared
to become global citizens and workers in tomorrow’s companies.
Risen Christ has teamed up with The Roche Center at Boston College and the Two-Way
Immersion Network for Catholic Schools (TWIN-CS) to create this innovative program.
Teachers have taken part in webinars with national leaders in the field and attended a
summer academy with the other Catholic schools immersed in this work. Catholic schools
have a long history of helping people transform their lives and become the business
leaders of tomorrow.
Risen Christ is the
first Catholic school
in Minnesota to offer
two-way immersion
classes. We are one of
only 19 Catholic schools
throughout the country
to offer this specialized
programming.
Initial testing with the Woodcock-Muñoz measurement instrument indicates
students are mastering the core reading skills in Spanish — 92.5 percent of
students were proficient in letter/word recognition in Spanish. The Measures
of Academic Progress (MAP) test indicated that 79.5 percent met or
exceeded their goal in math and 67 percent met or exceeded their goal
in reading. (Note: MAP tests were taken in English only.)

The True Worth Of Our Apostolate Is
Measured By The Value It Has In God’s Eyes
W
TIM DORNFELD
Director of Finance and Operations
e can get caught up measuring the value of our apostolic works by the standards
of efficiency, good management and outward success which govern the business
world. Not that these things are unimportant! We have been entrusted with a
great responsibility, and God’s people rightly expect accountability from us.
But the true worth of our apostolate is measured by the value it has in God’s
eyes….The cross shows us a different way of measuring success.
Ours is to plant the seeds: God sees to the fruits of our labors.
~ P o p e F r a n c i s , h o m i l y a t S t . P a t r i c k ’s C a t h e d r a l , N e w Yo r k C i t y, 2 0 1 5
The operating finances of the school have been stabilizing the past few
years. There are uncertainties and challenges that make the situation
more tenuous than I would like, but I am more confident that—without
the debt service from the 2003 building project—we can maintain a
balanced operating budget from year to year. Addressing that debt
service is a high priority for the financial viability of the school.
These words of Pope Francis during his pastoral visit to the United States
are a good reminder of what is truly important when looking at the
finances of Risen Christ School. To act in a transparent, efficient and
accountable way is necessary, especially when I see the great generosity
that the school’s supporters show every day. But it is not the measure of
our success.
Ultimately, Risen Christ School’s success is not measured by how much
money we raise or how efficiently we run the school, it is measured by
how many seeds are planted, how many lives are transformed, how many
children leave here prepared to encounter the “infinite possibilities”
we believe await them.
The figures on this page are meant to show, in a simplified manner, the inflow
and outflow of cash during the fiscal year July 1, 2014 – June 30, 2015.
Thank you for your contributions to this transformative work!
Risen Christ School conducts an annual audit of its financial statements;
that audit is available for review in the school’s business office.

to have a strong framework of long-serving volunteers who directly
impact the lives of our students and school community each year.

have language diversity among our volunteers.
