BY REV. ROBERT E.

SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR
n Friday, January
22, 2016, the Most
Rev. Brendan
J. Cahill, S.T.D.,
Bishop of the
Diocese of Victoria in Texas,
formally initiated the Cause
for the Canonization of Father
Charles W. Kram Jr., an associate
member of KJT Yoakum Society
#13 from December 1, 1987
until his death on August 13,
2000, with the appointment of
the Rev. Robert E. Knippenberg,
KJT State Spiritual Director,
as Postulator for the diocesan
phase of the Cause for Father
Kram’s sainthood. Father Kram was born on
September 30, 1929 to Charles
and Emma Zander Kram in
O
Shiner and was reared on the
family’s farm as a normal,
active healthy boy who had
a good sense of humor and a
desire to learn as much as he
could about everything. Charles
attended local Lavaca County
schools until graduation in 1946
and then enrolled at St. John
Seminary in San Antonio. In
May 1952, he was ordained a
sub-deacon for the Archdiocese
of San Antonio, but within a
few weeks was stricken with
paralytic polio that left him
paralyzed from the neck down
for the rest of his life. He spent
many months in an iron lung. Later he was taken to a
rehabilitation center where
he spent many more months
learning to use the usual devices

writing, etc. and to control a
battery-operated wheelchair
that was operated by Charles
pushing a ball-covered stem
with his chin. He also learned
to hold a stick in his mouth to
type and to operate his ham
radio and to turn pages of
books. He slept in a rocking
bed that helped keep his lungs
clear and make his breathing
easier. Later, Charles returned
to the family farm and to the
care of his parents until his
mother’s health forced her to go
into a nursing home. Charles’
father then single-handedly
cared for him. Any hope of
ordination to the priesthood
seemed impossible. But, perhaps by Divine
intervention, in 1975
Archbishop Francis Fury
decided that Charles could be
ordained a priest so he could
more effectively continue
his ministry of giving advice,
encouragement and spiritual
direction to visitors as well
as to people from all over the
world via his ham radio. He
was ordained a deacon and
the following day, December
5, 1975, Father Charles Kram
was ordained a priest at the age
of 46, almost 24 years after the
onset of polio and almost total
paralysis. He celebrated his first
Mass the next day. Father Kram returned home
with his father who continued
to care for his son and the son
readily accepted his condition as
the Will of God for him. Except
for celebrating Holy Mass with
assistance, life was much like
it had been before when his
days were spent in meditation,
prayer, practicing great patience
and using his ham radio until
1977 when Father Kram’s father
died in a tragic accident. Father
Kram was then moved to Huth
Memorial Hospital in Yoakum

and became the chaplain there.
This opened a whole new world
for his ministry and he found
great joy in being able to visit
and to console, to counsel,
and bring his special sense of
hope and peace to everyone
who came into the hospital as
patients, their families or even
guests. With assistance, Father
Kram celebrated daily Mass
when he was strong enough
even though he was subject
to infections, pain and great
difficulty in breathing. He
never complained or felt sorry
for himself but proved that
his weakness was actually his
greatest strength. Father Charles Kram died on
August 13, 2000 at the age of
70 and having spent 47 years
as a quadriplegic and totally
dependent upon others. But
his greatest joy was being able
to help everyone he could as his
way to give glory to God. The canonization process
is twofold. The first phase of
the process takes place on the
diocesan level and the second
at the Sacred Congregation for
the Causes of Saints in Rome.
The diocesan phase has only
just begun. The diocesan phase
is a period of gathering
information. The first task
is to assemble information
about the life of Father Kram.
Deacon Anthony Warzecha
has written a biography of
Father Kram entitled Gladly

A Joyful Journey through Life
Despite Enormous Suffering. It
is available from the Association

MESSAGE FROM THE STATE ATTORNEY
Filing A Property Tax Protest . . .
Question: I received a notice
of the 2016 appraised value for
my property, and I believe the
new appraised value is too high.
What do I need to do in order to
file a tax protest?
PHILIP J. HUNDL
KJT State Attorney
In order to file a property
tax protest, you will first need
to comply with the prescribed
deadlines. A written protest
must be filed on or before May
31 or not later than the 30th
day after the date a notice was
mailed to the property owner.

(ARB) will notify you of a Notice
of Hearing.
At least 14 days before the
hearing on a protest, the chief
appraiser will deliver a copy of
the hearing procedures, certain
information the appraiser
intends to use at the hearing
and other documentation. Many
protests can be resolved in an
informal hearing with a CAD
appraiser.
In order to do so, you should be
able to provide documentation
to support your claims. Informal
hearings end on the last day to
protest. If resolution cannot be
reached at the informal hearing,
you will need to appear before
the ARB at your scheduled
hearing time.
The ARB hearing is open to
the public and is generally held
before the ARB who will hear
evidence from both the property
owner and the appraisal district
and will arrive at a ruling. Each
party to a hearing is entitled
to offer evidence, examine or
cross-examine witnesses or other
parties, and present arguments.

ruling, known as the ARB order.
You may appeal the ARB order
by filing a petition (lawsuit) in
the district court of your county,
where the property is located,
within 60 days from the date you
receive the ARB order.
You can file the petition pro se
and represent yourself but I would
strongly recommend hiring an
attorney that is experienced in
litigating appraisal appeals. As
an alternative to filing a district
court appeal, you may have a
right to appeal through binding
arbitration, if your property is
a residential homestead or a
property with an appraised value
of $1 million dollars or less.
An arbitration appeal must be
filed with the appraisal district
within 45 days of receiving
the ARB order. An arbitration
appeal would be decided by an
arbitrator.
Finally, another option, for
property valued over $1 million
dollars and meeting several
criteria, a property owner can
file an appeal of the appraised
value to the State Office of
Administrative Hearings
(SOAH). Please note an appeal

KJT KRUISE 2017
Second Destination – St. Thomas
BY SHIRLEY POKORNEY
KJT KRUISE KOORDINATOR
t. Thomas, gateway
to the U.S. Virgin
Islands known for
beaches, snorkeling
and sport fishing,
is our second stop on the next
KJT Kruise and is also one of
our personal favorites.
My fondest memory of this
port is hiring a private driver at
the pier to show us her favorite
highlights of the island (far
cheaper and more personal
than excursions offered by the
cruise line and you can see more
in less time). She immediately
took off down a road that winds
around Magen’s Bay, a beautiful
cove now frequented by the
uber rich and the Hollywood
crowd, then up the highest
point called Drake’s Seat which
offers one of the very best views
of St. Thomas and surrounding
islands. Supposedly Queen
Elizabeth, after making Francis
S
Drake an admiral, gave him
orders to go to Central America
and loot the ships of her enemy,
Spain. Drake would climb high
on this mountain to a bench
overlooking Magen’s Bay to
view hundreds of miles of ocean
and identify ships to plunder.
The ships that had very little
keel above the water were
carrying gold back to Spain
from the Inca Empire of Peru.
Drake was later knighted by the
queen for his brilliant strategies
against the Spanish Armada.
This area is rich in fascinating
17th-19th century pirate
history. Here you can also
visit Blackbeard’s Castle, a
1679 Danish Watchtower.
Known as a historic jewel of the
Caribbean, the island is a great
way to travel back in time over
350 years to the last days of the
Carib Indians or to learn about
how during different times in
history this island went from
a den of thieves to a critical
strategic military location and
then to a playground for the
rich and famous.
The top reason for the current
popularity of St. Thomas is the
natural white sand beaches and
coral reef. The 5-acre Coral
World Ocean Park is a great
place to see marine life, swim
with sea turtles, pet a shark, or
feed stingrays, wild iguanas and
tropical birds. Here we did the
semi-submarine tour but I was
disappointed. It’s pricey and
quarters are cramped. What

plan as well.
Most drinks are $8 to $12, but
you can typically buy a bucket
of beer (5) for $22, and often the
price is reduced during happy
hours. The cost of prepaid is
$57.45 per person and must be
purchased for all 7 days of the
cruise.
A
Not shabby, but here’s the
kicker. When ashore, as we
were in Freeport, the beer was
as little as $2 for 16 oz., and
really tasty tropical drinks cost
$2 to $5. Some day when we
do a relocation sailing across
the Atlantic, I may opt for
the prepaid, but our Southern
Caribbean cruise will stop at 5
islands, giving us only one full
sea day.
For 5 days, the ship will be in
port from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. I’m
certain that the island drinks
will be, as we found in Freeport,
of the highest quality at very
reasonable prices.
So, my research and
recommendation is this – on
cruises with this many long
shore excursions, save your
money.
Drink the freshly made
tropical drinks on the island
and a share a bucket of beer
onboard at night.
My work is done here. It
has once again been a pleasure
bringing you only the best in

Caribbean is that the morning
sun provides the most brilliant
colors of coral, shells, flora and
amazing fish that you won’t
believe until you see. But in the
afternoon, those colors fade and
it looks like watching your black
and white TV back in the 50’s.
Because of the depth, everything
was in gray tones from the sub
windows. If you want to see
the reef without getting wet, a
better option is the Underwater

go into the water but can’t really
swim, you can walk the ocean

Is fishing more to your liking?
Some of the best game fish

a tamer experience, try inshore

from the beach can also snare
fish that will put up an exciting
fight.
In downtown Charlotte
Amalie (the capital), it is fun
to do a little shopping in the
cute shops, have a drink or
lunch in one of the quaint
waterfront restaurants, or just
wander and explore the historic
Frenchtown. I am told that
Government Hill has mustsee landmarks including 99

“The martyrs give voice to what we already feel and they declare what we would like to have the

What is the Fortnight for Freedom?
Each year dioceses around the country arrange special events to highlight the importance of
defending religious freedom. The Fortnight for Freedom is from June 21 – the vigil of the Feasts
of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More – to July 4, Independence Day. Check your diocesan and
parish websites to see what activities may be happening locally in observance of the Fortnight for
Freedom sponsored by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

By Cy Svrcek
Pflugerville Society #132 celebrated Mother’s Day with mimosas,
chocolate covered strawberries and an appetizing pancake breakfast.
Most of all, everyone enjoyed great fellowship! Boxes of chocolate candy,
floral arrangements, decorative crosses and bouquets of roses, and gift
certificates for pancake breakfasts were given as door prizes to some lucky
mothers. The Knights of Columbus celebrated Corporate Communion and
joined in the festivities. Shown above (left to right) are Rosalinda Hernandez,

were on the agenda. There
would be a general clean-up
of the KJT Hall on Monday,
May 23 at 7 in the evening
in preparation for the 50th
Ennis National Polka Festival
on May 27-29. The KJT was
to be hosting the Friday night
polka dancing contest to name
the best polka dancers. The
winning couple will be named
the King and Queen for the
Festival for the entire year

and national events.
The KJT Hall was to also be
the site of the Sunday morning
polka show with host Danny
Zapletal on Radio KBEC
with live polka music by the
Mark Vyhlidal Polka Band of
Wisconsin. Society #35 would
have a float in the Saturday
morning parade in downtown
Ennis. The Ennis Czech Boys
would be performing on the
float. It was designed and built
by the KJT members hoping for
a parade trophy.
Also on the meeting agenda
was the name of one of the
Society #35 local scholarship
winners. He is Lance
Schlottman, son of Tanner and
Brandi Schlottman. Tanner is
the current president of District
V. A round of applause was
given member Danny Zapletal
for being named a director of the
International Polka Association
headquartered in Chicago. His
band Czech and Then Some was
invited to perform at the Czech
Embassy in Washington, D.C.
on Saturday, May 14.
The meeting ended with
remarks by State Director
Robert Nors. He gave a report
on the State Family Day planned

ice cream at the KC Fish Fry’s
during Lent each year. This
year the money they earned
came from the ice cream sales
along with snacks which were
donated by members and also
some parishioners. One of the
members, Rick Nemec, built a
beautiful mantel clock to raffle
off. Tickets were sold during
the whole Lenten season and
the winner was drawn on the
last Friday. The money from
the raffle was split with the KCs.
The money made from
the sales was matched by a

welcomed everyone and led the
opening Prayer and the Pledge
Hostyn Society #3, along with other Hostyn organizations, celebrated
Join Hands Day on Sunday, April 3. The other organizations included were
KJZT #23 Adults and Juniors, Young Neighbors in Action, Just5Days,
Hostyn Catholic Daughters, Hostyn Christian Mothers and Hostyn Living
Rosary. Together they worked at the Hostyn Holy Rosary Parish grounds at
the prayer garden, church grounds, parish office and rectory in preparation
of the annual May picnic. The groups fertilized all plants and roses around
the church grounds and hall, rocks and dirt were hauled in, and old plants
were replaced with new ones.
of Allegiance. A drawing was
held for the attendance prizes
and Georgie Nors and Ervin
Laubert were the winners.
Robert Nors gave the
treasurer’s report and reported
on the Fish Fry Fundraiser
which was held on the first
Friday of Lent, February 12. He
reported $200 more in income
than last year.
Sherry Pavlas reported that
she sent a sympathy card
to the family of Raymond
Snokhous. She also sent get
well cards to Michael Kraemer,
Eugene Kraemer, Sierra Veselka
and Georgie Nors, a thinking of
you card to Kenneth Kubala,
and happy birthday cards to
George Meurer and Chris
Doskocil. She also sent thank
you cards to the City of West
for the use of their traffic cones
at the fundraiser and to Agnes
and Terry Timmons.
There was a discussion
on scholarships. Two $500
scholarships will be awarded to
students who are members of
West Society #31. It was decided
that the applications should
be due by Thursday, April
28. One of the requirements
of the scholarship was for
the applicant to do volunteer
work. Due to the officers having
family members involved in
the upcoming applications,
a committee was selected to
vote on the applicants. The
committee members were
Albert Charanza, Ervin Laubert
and Marvin Cepak.
Two Hamburger Fundraisers
were discussed to raise funds
for the scholarships. Saturday,
May 7 and Saturday, June 11
were the days set up for the
fundraisers. Also a Bake Sale
will be held. Cathy Kraemer
reported that she will apply for
a matching grant. It was agreed
that the prices will stay the same
as last year’s. Sherry Pavlas will
see if it could be held again in
front of the Pointwest Bank by
the old drive-through. It was
decided to start around 10 a.m.
to set up and to start serving
from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The District V Family Day,
which would be sponsored and
held in Ennis on Sunday, April
3, was discussed. Registration
would be held at 11 a.m., with
the events of fishing, horseshoes
and washer throws taking place
from noon to 3 p.m. Food
consisting of hamburgers and
hot dogs and drinks would be
available before and all through
the events. Robert Nors stated
that he would put it into the
church bulletin.
Robert Nors reported that
the society received the Level
2 Society Recognition Award
in 2015. He reported that new
member policies are needed to
keep up the Society Recognition
Level awards. Members were
reminded to recommend new
members.
Everyone commented
that the breakfast was very
good. Thanks to Louis, Brent
and Travis for cleaning up after
the breakfast. Cathy Kraemer
reported that she will mail
out reminders to the society’s
youth about the upcoming
swim party, which will be held
on Sunday afternoon, June 12. George Meurer and Michael
Kraemer won the door prizes. The meeting was adjourned and
closed with a prayer led by Don
Urbanovsky.
On behalf of St. Stephen’s Society #112 of Austin, Honorary State
Director and Interim Society President Ted Vitek and Reporter Sarah Vitek
presented a check to Rev. Mark Hamlet benefiting the Sacred Heart Fiesta.
Fr. Mark was most appreciative of the KJT.
