What is eye ointment?
Eye ointment is a means of instilling medicine directly into the
eye. There are a number of conditions we do this for including,
dry eye syndrome, infections, after surgery and many others.
Are there any precautions I should follow?
First ensure you know which eye the ointment is to go into and
how frequently. Check the ointment is within the use by date
and has not changed colour. Do not use ointment that has been
prescribed for or used by someone else. If you wear contact
lenses remove them before using your ointment, do not reinsert
the lenses for 30 minutes after instilling the ointment. Keep
ointment away from children.
How do I use my eye ointment?
• Wash your hands with soap and
water, dry your hands well before
using your eye ointment.
• Make sure you have some tissues
ready.

Carefully remove the cap of the eye ointment be careful that
the applicator does not touch anything.

Sit or lay comfortably with your head supported.
•
If sitting down tilt your head carefully upward (not necessary
if you are laying down).

Look upward (this ensures the top eye lid is out of the way).

Gently pull down on the lower
eyelid to make a “pocket” to
catch the drop.
•
Some people instill the eye
ointment by resting their hand
against their forehead or nose
and squeezing the tube to
instill an inch of ointment into
the eye.
•
Other people find it easier to
balance the tube on their nose
(feeling the tube between the
eyebrows) and holding the
tube straight squeeze an inch
of ointment into the eye.

Make sure the applicator
does not come into contact
with your skin or your eye,
as this contaminates it and
can lead to infections.
Once administered, close your eyes gently and keep
them closed for 30 seconds. This encourages the
ointment to melt, when you open your eye, it will
spread the ointment over the front of the eye.
•
Gently wipe away any excess ointment with the tissue
and dispose of the tissue immediately.
•
If you have to instill eye ointment into the other eye
repeat the process.
Should my eyes sting after instilling ointment?
Sometimes people notice that their eyes sting for a short time
after instilling their eye ointment, however this usually passes
quickly. If the sting is excessive, or if it continues, please
contact the eye clinic.
I have problems instilling the ointment as my hands
are weak
Talk to the nurses in clinic, or ask for an appointment in the eye
clinic, where the nurse will assess the difficulties you are
experiencing.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
•
Wash your hands after instilling the ointment.
Instill the ointment as soon as you remember, however if it is
time for your regular dose skip the missed dose, do not double
the dose to catch up.
•
Remember most ointments are greasy and will blur
your vision after use for 5-10 minutes. DO NOT
DRIVE UNTIL YOUR VISION CLEARS.

•
Your vision worsens
•
The eye becomes swollen, red or sticky
•
The eye becomes very irritable or very watery
•
The symptoms are worsening after 3 days of treatment
