Goodness, where did
Summer go?
Executive Director
Candace Lewis
The Chamber hasn’t had
much time to really soak
in the wonderful, hot, dry
Southeastern New Mexico
weather like everyone else. I
heard it reached the triple
digits a few days though….
Kidding – before too long we
will be enjoying the sights
and sounds of Fall, wearing
boots and hoodies and
gearing up for youth league
and High School football and
drinking some sort of hot
pumpkin flavored beverage.
All this time indoors has me really excited to announce some
new things the Chamber staff has been working diligently on for
the last few months:
#1 We have made some revisions to your Membership benefits,
after all that’s what we are here for to help prosper you, our
Members! Tawnie has worked tirelessly on brainstorming
ways we can offer more for our members, from newsletter ads,
to radio spots to now Chamber Bucks and that’s just a start.
Contact Tawnie and see her flyer in the newsletter with more
information.
#2 The Chamber is, and should be, the hub for the City, County
and other organizations throughout Roswell. We listened and
browsed around and we have started the process to reconstruct
the Chamber website! It will have beautiful pictures showcasing
Roswell, offer more features for our members to take advantage
of, and more information for all those who care to visit our
wonderful little city, even if they are little green creatures, we
don’t discriminate, we want to welcome everyone! Stay tuned
for further information and our launch date for the new and
improved Roswell Chamber of Commerce website.
#3 I am driven to offer more business related seminars to
help our members grow, whether it’s a seminar on how to use
Facebook and other social media platforms, marketing your
business, or maybe you want to brush up on your already
exceptional customer service. I’m dedicated to help you and
grow our community in a positive direction. If you have
suggestions, questions or concerns please feel free to contact
me.
These are just a few great things that are happening at your
Chamber, please watch your emails and continue to follow
us on our social media pages for more up-to-date events and
happenings throughout this great City we live in.

Letter From President,
Shane Hall
How exciting it is to be writing my first official letter as your
new President of the Roswell Chamber of Commerce .
First of all, let me introduce myself to you. I work for First
American Bank as the President of the Roswell banking
centers. I am married to my beautiful wife Melanie, who is
a CPA and works for Mack Energy with Par Five and Elite
Well Services. We have two wonderful sons, Cade & Cooper.
The oldest, Cade, will graduate from Texas Tech University
this December with a Degree in International Economics. He
also works for Lone Star Auto Auctions & recently won the
Texas Rookie Auctioneer Contest. My youngest son, Cooper,
just graduated high school and will be attending UNM this
fall majoring in Biology with aspirations of being a Doctor.
I have been active in the this community and proud to serve
on several boards, including Chavez County CASA, New
Mexico Junior Livestock Foundation, New Mexico Ag in the
Classroom, and the Roswell Chaves County Economic Development Board. I am a member of Pecos Valley Rotary and am
very happy to use my auctioneering skills to help raise funds
for different foundations and youth groups.
The month of August is a busy time! Summer is winding down
and we have back to school shopping, football two-a-days,
students returning to ENMU-R or NMMI, and county fairs are on people’s minds. All of these create opportunities
for Roswell Chamber Members to provide services and products that meet the needs of potential customers.
I encourage us all to get out and meet our children’s teachers and coaches and be supportive of them. We have some
great schools here in Roswell. Not only at the primary and secondary levels, but both ENMU-R and NMMI provide
top of the line opportunities for secondary education locally. Slow down in those school zones!
Your Chamber membership is growing everyday and as a community you are very fortunate to have a vibrant, engaging, and helpful Chamber staff. Take advantage of what the Chamber offers and join them as often as possible for
one of their noon time “Food for Thought” events. They are great educational opportunities! If you want to know
what is going on in the city, join one of the “Mornings with the Mayor”. If you want to showcase your business,
host a “Business After Hours” event. If you have a business in Roswell or the surrounding area I encourage you to be
engaged with your Chamber and its staff. I look forward to the coming year and serving this great community!
Sincerely,
Shane Hall

Leadership Roswell Begins Its 34th Class
The Roswell Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Roswell Class of 2017 will begin its nine month journey in September. The
program, created by the Roswell Chamber of Commerce in 1983, is in its 34th year and is the oldest continuous leadership
program of its kind in the State of New Mexico.
The program will begin with a welcome reception on Tuesday, September 6th for the students and their significant others
followed by the first day of class on Friday, September 9th. The first class will include an orientation to the program,
leadership training on making a difference each day, and a trip to City Hall to learn about the City of Roswell.
Classes will continue one Friday each month through May. Future classes will include leadership training on topics such as
goal setting, attitude, communication, overcoming failure, creating margin in your life, and making a positive impact each day.
Students will learn about our city, county, and state, law enforcement, education, health care, agribusiness, manufacturing and
numerous other areas. The course includes the ropes program, a trip to Santa Fe to meet with state leaders and tour facilities,
and a trip to the Federal Law Enforcement Academy in Artesia
The Leadership Roswell program will also provide the opportunity for networking for students in the program and with
leaders throughout the community.
The program graduated its 2016 class earlier this year when 29 students got their diplomas at the Third Street Station. The
program has graduated 835 students over its three decades.
Applications for this program are available at the Roswell Chamber of Commerce and are being accepted through August 1st.
Leadership Roswell Executive Director Rick Kraft is excited about the new class and the potential its students will have to
contribute and improve our community. He believes that Roswell is the best community in the world in which to live, but it
can only rise as high as its leadership.

5 REASONS FOR A FAILED STARTUP
By Mike Kappel on May 4, 2016 in Entrepreneur, Small Business, Startup
I’ve been an entrepreneur for 30 years. I’m the founder of Patriot Software Company, which presently has six companies under its umbrella, all
of which I’ve started. With each one of these business ventures, I learned something new about what it takes to get a business up and running.
I’ve also learned a thing or two about what doesn’t work in business and will lead to a failed startup. That’s because, despite my six successful
businesses, I can count two businesses that have outright failed, and numerous business ideas that never made it off the ground at all.
Failure offers valuable lessons. I’ve learned what works and what doesn’t when it comes to business. From my experience, there are five reasons
why your startup will fail.
You Can’t Turn an Idea Into a Business
You’d be amazed at how many business ideas break down when you ask a few simple, logical questions about a plan to launch a startup. For
example, if you want to offer a service, who would buy it? Or, if you want to sell a product, how will it be made? Instead of talking about how
cool your idea is, you need to be able to turn it into something you can market, sell, and scale. Conducting a market analysis can work simple
wonders, and help you avoid a failed startup.
You Don’t Understand Business Velocity
I’ve had many business ideas. Sometimes, my vision induces spending on development before I ask questions or do research. Why do I, an
entrepreneurial veteran, make mistakes like this? It’s because business is about speed-to-market. Sometimes you have to trust your gut and move
fast on an idea, even before you can fully vet an idea.
Time is money, and managing the clock in business is just as, if not more important than, managing your budget for business. You can spend time
like a currency. However, unlike money, what you don’t spend, you lose. So, knowing that you only get so much time, and that time is perishable,
will you spend it gaining information and making plans at the cost of a head start? How much will it cost you if you don’t take the lead, or if a
competitor beats you to market? Knowing the relationship between your clock and your wallet is crucial to running a successful business.
You Form a Not-so-great Team
I’ve tried to adopt a servant-leadership style with my employees over the years. My aim is to hire people smarter than me, put them on a team, and
then let them do what they do best. I know that their capacity for innovation is my company’s greatest resource. But, I can tell you that the skills
listed on a resume don’t always create productive teams. In fact, I’d rather have teams that work well together than have a software development
team full of superstars that can’t work with anyone.
I was the superstar employee once, and I got disgusted with my teammates. They couldn’t keep up with me, so I left them behind. I charged
ahead, took on more work, and tried to make myself look amazing to my employer. What happened was the opposite. I looked like an information
bottleneck who wouldn’t share knowledge and was unable to lead because I, myself, wouldn’t listen. Highly collaborative teams are much more
effective than individual stars. Now, I look for talented people who can work with others instead of searching for only best-of-the-best talent.
You Are Unable to Prioritize
I once heard an incredible entrepreneur say that the key to success in any field is becoming a gold medalist in one category. The thought was, if
you can show that you are amazing at one thing, other things will take care of themselves. This is easier said than done for many startups. You
probably believe that all your ideas are great. And, they just might be! But, trying to bring all your ideas to life at once is how you turn a bunch of
great ideas into one failed business. Instead, pick one idea and focus on it.
Your Ego Gets in the Way
The ancient Greek philosopher, Pythagoras, once said, “No man is free who cannot command himself.” Simply put, if you can’t control yourself,
then you aren’t operating under free will. Instead, you are subject to your emotions, or ego. All entrepreneurs need confidence. Some have too
much confidence, and it leads them into traps. Those entrepreneurs push forward with ideas that research says aren’t viable. They chase bad
money with good money. And, they treat people as a means to an end instead of real folks with real ideas, values, and emotions. In the end, they
will join the failed startup club, and their ego will suffer a painful blow.
Ego is something entrepreneurs must manage throughout their careers. Your ego will expand and contract with your business, and it can get beat
up or become impervious to reason. If you want your company to be balanced, you have to be balanced. Your job is not who you are; it’s just an
extension of how you want to live. Making the distinction between your job and your life makes every part of business easier.
Failure is a Part of Business
This might shock you, but you should fail during the course of your business. I’m not saying your business should collapse, and you should be
out of a job. But, failure isn’t a bad thing. In fact, lean and agile business principles are all about testing, failing, learning, interacting, and trying
again. Failing fast, in small batches, can help you make the most of your business. When I first started in business, I was afraid of failure. Now, I
structure my business ventures in such a way that, if I’m going to fail, I’m going to make the most of it.

Redcoat Tales by President,
Rhonda B. Johnson
What is a Redcoat? We are often referred to simply as “Redcoats” and being
a Redcoat is more than simply wearing the infamous red coat we are known
for around town. Let me share just some of what a Redcoat is. . .Redcoats are
passionate ambassadors of our city, Redcoats greet you at events, Redcoats
share your excitement as you open your business, Redcoats help celebrate
special events or anniversaries, Redcoats have very sharp scissors and some
great red ribbon at Ribbon Cuttings! However, underneath those “red coats”
are some pretty fantastic people who are your neighbors, your friends, your
family members, and your co-workers, maybe even someone you haven’t
met yet (but we’ll take care of that at our next Chamber event).
What a hot and busy June we Redcoats enjoyed! Our first Ribbon Cutting at
the Bert and Martha Murphy Splash Pad was very exciting, it’s the first of its
kind in Roswell, and so many grateful kids were really enjoying all the water
on that hot June day (all of us Redcoats had to use great restraint)! We had a
wonderful Business after Hours hosted by PVT Broadcasting at the Liberty.
. .lots of fun and lots of door prizes! If you haven’t joined us, you really are
missing out on a great networking event.
Our two Saturday calls were tons of fun as we supported the opening of the
Alien City Dragway (one of the fast cars took our Mayor for a ‘quick’ trip
Rhonda Johnson
down the dragway) and we were one of the first to welcome the new addition to the Town & Country RV Park (we donned our red polo shirts on these
2016-2017 Redcoat President
outdoor events)! And if our feet weren’t happy enough going to events, we
attended a Ribbon Cutting for Shoes to be Happy. . oh what fun we had in that store! With pride and appreciation for our
community, we toured the beautiful new facilities at ENMU-R Health Science Center’s Regional Medical Simulation
Center. We are blessed to be able to have new, up and coming, healthcare professionals train right here in Roswell!
Our second Business after Hours at Palace Spa was so much fun! The koi pond outside became a serious focus of where
not to end up, but the beauty and splendor of the spa, the great entertaining music and the outdoor misters made all of us
want to spend some quality time there! And then, Albertson’s new Market on 2nd Street was our next celebration Ribbon
Cutting! All of the local Albertson employees were on hand along with the rest of their United family from Lubbock and
surrounding areas. The message to Roswell was, “this is your store, tell us what you need!”
As Redcoats, we appreciate the opportunity to represent our Chamber of Commerce and YOU! If there is anything we
can do for you, we want to know about it. Please contact the Chamber to schedule your next event.
And, calling on all happy people who are tired of missing out on all the fun we Redcoats have, it’s the perfect time to
join our team! Just ask any Redcoat you see or call Rhonda Johnson at 505-917-1292 for an application and more information! We love this town we call home!
Sincerely,

PREVENTION IS KEY TO AVOIDING HEAT STROKE
By Brooke Linthicum, Director of Marketing, Eastern New Mexico Medical Center
Ironically, the first sign of dangerous heat stroke or heat-related illness is
often the absence of sweat. As the temperature rises, your body’s natural
cooling mechanism – perspiration – evaporates and helps to cool your body.
But on those really hot and humid days, evaporation is slowed and your body
runs a higher risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
“Virtually all heat-related illnesses are preventable,” said Carrie Flurry, PA-C, of La Familia Care Center. “Be extra careful when the heat index is 90 degrees or above, and always drink plenty of water or fluids with electrolytes when the heat
index is high. If you must be outdoors, take frequent breaks inside or in the shade. Heat stroke can affect people of any
age or fitness level – don’t underestimate the danger.”
Heat exhaustion is a precursor to heat stroke. If you experience any of these symptoms, get out of the heat immediately
and to a cool place, and slowly drink water or other fluids with salt or sugar:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Pale skin
Fatigue or weakness
Dizziness or nausea
Profuse sweating
Rapid pulse or fast, shallow breathing
Muscle weakness or cramps
Do NOT drink caffeine or alcohol, and if you don’t feel better within 30 minutes, seek medical help. Heat exhaustion can
progress to heat stroke if not treated. These more dangerous warning signs can indicate heat stroke is imminent:
•
•
•
•
•
Skin that feels hot and dry, but not sweaty
Confusion or loss of consciousness
Throbbing headache
Frequent vomiting
Trouble breathing
“Heat stroke is more serious than heat exhaustion, and it can be life-threatening,” said Flurry. “If you or someone you
know experiences signs of heatstroke, remember NOT to attempt to bring down the temperature too quickly. Don’t use
ice or ice water. Attempt to bring down the temperature gradually with cool spray or mild air conditioning, and dial 911 or
proceed immediately to the nearest ER.”
Certain groups of people are more vulnerable to heat-related illness. Babies and young children, the elderly or infirmed,
and people on certain medications are all at increased risk. So, be an alert and informed neighbor this summer. Check on
elderly neighbors regularly, and take action immediately if you see children or pets left in vehicles.
For more information about heat stroke visit www.ENMMC.com.

TIPS TO STAY COOL & LOWER SUMMER BILLS
By Xcel Energy
Summer on the southern plains calls up images of bright sunny days and
pleasant evenings, and air conditioning completes that pretty picture for many
Xcel Energy customers in New Mexico and Texas.
Home cooling can account for half or more of a summertime electric bill, and
the best way customers can keep that bill from climbing too high is to practice
some basic conservation and efficiency habits that help us maintain household
comfort without stressing our budgets. Xcel Energy offers tips for saving
money and energy at its website, www.xcelenergy.com. Among the simplest of
the energy-saving measures are:
•
Raise the thermostat setting from 72 to 78 degrees, providing a savings of up to $100 over the course of the
summer.
•
Turn off unnecessary lighting and replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs or
LEDs, which use 75 percent less energy than traditional bulbs and last longer.
•
Run washing machines, dishwashers and clothes dryers with full loads, and after the heat of the day.
•
Change air conditioning filters.
•
Use ceiling fans to help cool the home.
•
Use a whole-house or attic fan to draw in cool nighttime air and push out hot air during the day.
Xcel Energy also offers incentives and rebate programs to make homes and
businesses more efficient. Information on these programs can be found at
www.xcelenergy.com by selecting the “Programs & Rebates” link at the top
of the homepage.

“Local Happenings”
The 2016 Roswell New Mexico UFO Festival was held this year June 30- July 3rd. The UFO
museum had approximately 14,000 visitors walk through their door. This four day event featured
guest speakers, authors, live entertainment, a parade, costume contest, pet costume contest,
vendors from all over the United States, and a beer garden provided by Pecos Flavor’s Winery.
Family fun activities filled our downtown Main street, Courthouse lawn, and Pioneer Plaza. We
look forward to 2017’s festival, which is already on the calendar for June 29-July 2nd.
Roswell Sertoma Club hosted our Mike Satterfield July 4th Fireworks Extravaganza. The
Kumbia Kings, a Mexican American Mexican Cumbia group from Corpus Christi, Texas, were
the live music entertainment for the night at Cielo Grande. Families lined the streets while the
fireworks began lighting up the sky around 9:20pm. A special Thank You goes out to the Fire
Department for a beautiful firework show and Police Department for their service to keep us all
safe that night.
July 8th the City of Roswell and Chaves County residents joined together in a moment of silence and prayers for the Dallas
Police Department and Dallas Area Rapid Transit Officer who lost their lives during the attack by one or more shooters. We will
continue to show our love and support to Dallas Police Department and our local police department and first responders.
Senior Olympics was held July 13th-16th. Roswell receives about 1,700 visitors each year f or this event for 50+ adults with a
healthy active lifestyle. There is a wide range of events they do from Bowling, archery, basketball, cycling, dancing, and much
more! The eldest athlete was recognized, 98 year old Patsy Boyd from Espanola.
Governor Susana Martinez announced this month that for the fourth year in a row, New Mexico has had a record breaking
number of visitors to our beautiful state. The total for the 2015 year was 33.4 Million! The Governor had planned on making
a trip to Roswell to speak on the Tourism rise, but detoured to Dallas for the memorial service for the fallen officers. Tourism
Department Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Latham came in the place of the Governor to give us the tourism growth figures.

ENMU-Roswell Integrates Technology in Health
By ENMU- Roswell
Roswell unveiled the Regional Medical Simulation Center (RMSC) on June 16, 2016. The event was a huge success with both
local healthcare industry partners, medical professionals, and community members in attendance. In this state-of-the-art center,
medical professionals and health students can refine their skills on manikins or “patient simulators” that mimic an array of medical conditions. The center houses five high fidelity patient simulators: Two SimMan, 3-G, SimMom, SimNewB, Sim Junior
Each patient simulator is unique in its own way. They can speak, cry, sweat,
seize, bleed, breathe and has a wide range of capabilities. For example, SimMom can also give birth to a simulation newborn. During a fully immersive
medical simulation, learners enter into a realistic healthcare setting where a
patient simulator is being wirelessly operated by both educational and simulation technical staff. Each simulation experience can be designed and customized
based on Instructor or Employer needs to mimic real life events that occur in
medical settings and or in the field. Patient simulators use 3G wireless technology allowing for usage throughout Southeastern New Mexico.
Our center displays photo art of local medical health professionals and first
responders. Eastern New Mexico Medical Center donated hospital equipment
that is currently used in the simulation rooms. The center is equipped with the
latest audio visual equipment that enables each scenario to be digitally streamed
live to other learners and recorded for playback during the debriefing process to
help further and enhance the learning process. Simulations are a great tool for
ENMU-Roswell student and community health care professionals to improve
clinical decision-making skills and health outcomes.
The Regional Medical Simulation Center was funded as part of the Department
of Labor’s Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) grant. The RMSC is one of four simulation centers funded by
the grant and the only one located in the southern part of the state. Each center
works in conjunction with the SUN PATH Program to enhance and promote Nursing, Allied Health and Emergency Medical
Services.
“Providing great healthcare to the people of Roswell and the surrounding area is truly a team effort. At the Medical Center, we
must constantly seek out well-trained health care professionals in a wide variety of disciplines and job categories, in order that
we may offer the services that enable patients to get their care right here at home. For that kind of training, we turn to ENMU-R,
to educate our work force, and keep us supplied with skilled professionals.
I was recently invited to tour the health facilities at the campus, with special attention to the incredible asset known as the “Simulation Center,” or Sim Center for short. It is without question the single most amazing array of training devices I’ve ever seen.
The state of the art equipment, coupled with its capable operating staff, gives us the opportunity to mimic and re-create virtually
every treatment scenario that our nurses and other personnel will face in their careers. It’s one of those things that you just cannot fully understand and appreciate unless you see it in operation.
All of us in Roswell and neighboring cities will benefit from this Center.
Go see it, and prepare to be amazed!” ~Rod M. Schumacher, CEO
ENMMC
