Bishop John Stowe was born April 15, 1966, to John R. and
Lucy Satelli Stowe of Lorain, Ohio. He attended grade school
at Saint Anthony of Padua Parish staffed by the Conventual
Franciscans and Lorain Catholic High School.
After a year of community college, Bishop John joined the
formation program for the Conventual Franciscan Province
of Our Lady of Consolation at Saint Bonaventure Friary in St. Louis, Missouri. During the time of
his candidacy he began studies in Philosophy and History at Saint Louis University and completed
B.A.s in each in 1990 after an interruption for novitiate. In 1992 he professed solemn vows in the
Order of Friars Minor Conventual.
Bishop John earned a Masters of Divinity and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology in the field of Church
History from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley (now affiliated with Santa Clara University).
He served as a transitional deacon at Saint David of Wales Parish in Richmond, California, and completed his diaconate at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in El Paso, Texas. In 1995 he was ordained
to the priesthood by Bishop A. James Quinn at his home parish of Saint Anthony in Lorain. He was
assigned to continue at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church as associate pastor. The parish is at the
site of the Ysleta Mission, founded in 1682, and the oldest parish in Texas. It is on the U.S.-Mexico
border and includes the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo of the Tigua tribe of Native Americans. Father John
would continue as pastor of that parish.
In December of 2002, Bishop John was invited by the Most Reverend Armando X. Ochoa, Bishop
of El Paso, to serve the Diocese of El Paso as Moderator of the Curia and Vicar General. He later
also served as Chancellor of the diocese. With a lack of priests in the diocese, Bishop John also assumed the role of Administrator of Our Lady of the Valley Parish there while serving in the Chancery.
At the Province Chapter of 2010, Bishop John was elected Vicar Provincial of the Province of Our
Lady of Consolation; he resigned from the Chancery in El Paso and became Pastor and Rector of
the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, Ohio (Toledo Diocese). He was
re-elected vicar at the Chapter of 2014.
During his time in El Paso, Bishop John taught in the Tepeyac Institute for lay ministry, in the permanent diaconate formation programs for the Diocese of Las Cruces and El Paso, and was active in
community organizing in an organization called EPISO. He was active in ecumenical and interfaith
dialogue and frequently taught jointly with Rabbi Larry Bach of the Reformed Temple Mount Sinai.
In the Franciscan Province Bishop John chaired the Peace and Justice Commission and the Finance
Commission at different times and served a term as a definitor (provincial counselor) even prior to
his election as vicar provincial.
Pope Francis appointed Bishop John Stowe as the Third Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of
Lexington on March 12, 2015.

Explanation of the Coat of Arms &
Episcopal Motto of Bishop John Stowe
The episcopal heraldic achievement, or bishop’s
coat of arms, is composed of a shield, that is the
central and most important part of the design and
tells to whom the design belongs, the external
ornamentation, that tells the owner’s position
or rank, and a motto, placed upon a
scroll. By heraldic tradition the design is described (blazoned)
as if being done by
the bearer with the
shield being worn
on the arm. Thus,
where it applies
the terms “sinister” and
“dexter” are reversed as
the design is viewed
from the front.
For the bishop of a
diocese, known as
an Ordinary, his
personal arms are
joined (impaled)
with the arms
of his jurisdiction; in this
case the Diocese of Lexington.
The arms of the diocese are composed of three
sections (tirced) of red, silver (white) and blue,
the national color of the United States. To the
left (dexter) the field is red with a sword, erect,
that is tip to chief, of silver (white) with the hilt
in gold (yellow). The sword is the symbol of
Saint Paul, patron of the Diocese of Covington.
To the right (heraldic sinister) is a silver (white)
field that displays a blue fleur-de-lis, from the
arms of the Archdiocese of Louisville. It was from
the Covington and Louisville that the Diocese of
Lexington was carved. In base is a blue field, to
hone “the Blue Grass State” of Kentucky, that displays a silver (white) cross, upon which is a gold
(yellow) diadem to honor Christ the King, titular
patron of the cathedral-church in the See City.
In the sinister impalement of the design (right
side) are the personal arms of Bishop John
Stowe. These are composed of a silver (white)
field on which is see a red eagle, the symbol
of Saint John, His Excellency’s baptismal
patron and his religious patron, as his name
within his religious community is also
John. Below the eagle
is a black Tau cross,
emblematic of Saint
Francis of Assisi,
founder of His Excellency’s community, the Order of
Friars Minor and it is
in black because that
is a dominant color of
the habit of the Conventual Franciscan. Upon
the tau is a green
“Mary’s Key,” that
can be seen hanging from the belt
of the Blessed
Virgin Mary, in
her title of “Our
Lady of Consolation,” whose national shrine Bishop Stowe
was rector at the time o f his appointment to
become a bishop.
For his motto, His Excellency, Bishop Stowe
has adopted the Latin phrase “ANNUNTIAMUS
VERBUM VITAE.” In this case, His Excellency
expresses the Scriptural direction about the
life in Christ, that it is He who “announces the
words of life.”
The achievement is completed with the external
ornaments that are a gold (yellow) processional
cross, that extends above and below the shield,
and a pontifical hat, called a galero, with its six
tassels, in three rows, on either side of the shield,
all in green. These are the heraldic insignia of a
prelate of the rank of bishop by instruction of the
Holy See, of March 1969.

The Diocesan Review Board is composed of professionals with expertise in areas which
enable them to justly advise the bishop in his assessment of allegations of sexual abuse
of minors and in his determination of a cleric’s suitability for ministry. The board regularly
reviews diocesan policies and procedures for dealing with sexual abuse of minors.

The Catholic Action Center, modeled on the Catholic Worker Movement, is a house of hospitality. Volunteers serve individuals who are not served by the established social service
network. The center on 5th Street is open 24 hours a day during the winter months, serving
three meals daily and offering restroom and shower facilities, telephone and mail service.
The ministry sponsors God’s Garments, a free store offering clothing and household goods;
God’s Quarters, a free laundry service for the homeless; Divine Providence Way, a community
home for homeless men who are rebuilding their lives; and St. Ann’s House, a residence for
women who are mentally ill. The ministry sponsors seasonal outreach programs such as
summer meals for children and the Faith and Community Christmas Store.

Catholic Committee of Appalachia (CCA) promotes justice and dignity in Appalachia in
accordance with Catholic social teaching. CCA, founded in 1970 by the bishops, clergy,
religious and laity working in the Appalachian region, provides support, education, advocacy
and collaboration among the 27 Catholic dioceses in 13 states, addressing such issues as
health care, labor, economic development, education and sustainable communities. Two
Appalachian pastoral letters are from the work of this committee and provide the vision for
much of its work. CCA prepares lay volunteer workers as well as new bishops, clergy and
religious for ministry in the region.

The group emphasizes the personal presence, sanctifying mission and evangelistic
activity of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Catholics. It focuses on providing a communal
outlet for Catholic charismatic spirituality through opportunities to study the Bible and
outreach, to exercise the Spirit’s virtuous and supernatural gifts, to share and find
fellowship with other charismatic Catholics and to allow Catholics an opportunity for a
renewed experience of Pentecost. Gatherings and Masses are celebrated on the second
Monday of each month in London and on the fourth Thursday of each month in Lexington.
Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Lexington
Catholic Charities empowers and assists residents of the Diocese of Lexington to improve
their quality of life. Services are available to people of all faiths and include affordable marriage, pre-marriage, individual, adolescent and family counseling, free pregnancy counseling,
financial literacy classes, job readiness services and limited financial assistance for rent
and utility payments. CCDL is a licensed adoption agency. Educational consultation services
for schools and parishes are available as well.

The Cursillo Movement, by means of its own method, makes it possible for people to live

who leaven their environments with the Gospel. Cursillo consists of a three-day short-course
prioritizing faith life and improving participants’ relationships with God. Cursillo approaches
living faith as a very natural act of being Christ-like within daily activities.

Faith Pharmacy is a faith-based charitable project that provides medications without charge
to indigent patients with valid prescriptions who have been referred by various service
organizations in Lexington and the surrounding counties. Faith Pharmacy is a state-licensed
pharmacy and is open every Saturday morning. Volunteer pharmacists counsel patients and
attempt to enroll them in patient assistance programs. Church members, social workers and
local physicians also volunteer their time to this effort.

The Father Beiting Appalachian Mission Center seeks to continue the late Monsignor Ralph
Beiting’s legacy of service to the people of Appalachian Kentucky. The Mission Center has
a resource warehouse which distributes donated materials to parishes, missions and outreach centers, hosts hundreds of volunteers annually, and operates a transitional housing
community where families can work toward greater stability.

the first medical clinic in Stanton, Kentucky; a pilgrim shrine duplicating Saint Pio’s Church in Italy…
Santa Maria Delle Grazie is in the development phase; and a faithful Catholic medical school and
hospital are the capstone key components of the strategic vision for this initiative fondly referred
