Summer Camp Opens!
Let the fun begin!
Brainchild
June 15-26 (2 weeks), 9:00 – 3:00, ages 9-12
Do you know your child’s learning profile? Would your child rather participate in a
physical challenge or a passionate debate? More inclined to hike through the woods or
construct a 3D model? Prefer practicing with a musical group or making a scrapbook
with friends?
Current research indicates we each have a unique profile of “intelligences.” Exploring
the answers to questions like these will help children identify the strengths and affinities
they bring to school each day. Students will engage in a variety of activities inspired by
the work of Harvard professor, Howard Gardner, PhD as well as the Schools Attuned
teacher training program. Students will gain a more complete understanding of their
personal learning profiles and investigate ways to improve school and study skills.
Brainchild will help your child discover the learner within. The camp includes daily
outdoor time (weather permitting), field trips, and is led by WMS teachers Lisa Lalama
and Laurie Orsic.
Questions? Contact [email protected]
Note: Summer Fun Art Camp is now full, and closed for registration.
IMPORTANT: SWINE FLU
As you may know, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has
identified cases of Swine Influenza virus A in California, Kansas, NY, Ohio and
Texas. While the CDC continues to work with local and state health agencies to
investigate these cases, they have determined that this virus is contagious and is most
likely spreading from human to human through coughing and sneezing. However, at
this time, it is not known how easily the virus spreads between people. Anything we
can do to help minimize the spread of germs that may cause illness makes good
sense. Hand washing and hand sanitizing are especially critical to minimize the spread
of germs during times of illness outbreak. Please review these CDC recommendations
and share them with your children.
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the
tissue in the trash after you use it.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze.
• Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
• If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit
contact with others to keep from infecting them.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
For updates on the swine flu or other general information related to minimizing the
spread of germs, please go to: http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/
What an Adventure it was…
On a warm April evening, WMS friends and families gathered for a Fire and Ice Adventure
they’d never forget at the historic Soda House at the Hagley Museum. The evening was
filled with lively music, fabulous food and gifts ranging from t-shirts to trips to Disney World,
all in the name of supporting the children of Wilmington Montessori School.
The auction was a great success! Once again, Party Delaware provided hot sounds and
cool commentary throughout the evening (as well as a much needed wireless microphone!).
Many thanks to Becket and Burke Catering for the delicious food and Tri-State Liquors for
their assistance with the evening’s beverages. We are grateful to Endo Pharmaceuticals,
Delmarva Power and Marvin & Palmer Associates, Inc. for their support and sponsorship of
the evening, as well as all of our catalog advertisers.
This effort was led by Auction Co-Chairs Pam & Jeffrey Politis, whose leadership and energy
brought together a fabulous team of parent and alumni volunteers who achieved new
heights of greatness in gift selection, display and decorations, catalog and invitation design,
event night logistics and our first-ever Cyber Sale.
Finally, thank you to the many parents, staff and WMS friends who came out Friday night to
bid the night away. Your generosity is inspiring! Get ready… next year’s auction will be here
before you know it. If you are interested in being involved with next year’s auction, please
contact Jenn Burns at [email protected]. Still haven’t received all your gifts from
Friday night? Stop by Jenn’s office (across the hall from the Music Room) to get yours today.

Have you ever wondered what you could do to organize and more easily view all of the
visual memories you’ve collected over the years? Now there’s a local company and friend
of the school that offer economical transfers of photos, slides, negatives, video tapes and
home movies to CD and DVD. As a service to our parents and staff, SaveMyPix.com will
be available at WMS for the drop-off of these precious memories on May 19-21 from
8-10 a.m. and 2-4 p.m. Brochures are available at the front desk, as are boxes for
submitting photo prints. Questions? Call Maxx Messinger @484-234-0656
The Delaware Estuary and Bay, by Room 19
What is an Estuary? Estuaries are areas where salt water and fresh water mix
together. Estuaries support one of the most diverse habitats of wildlife,
especially migrating birds. The Delaware Estuary includes parts of
Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. It stretches 133 miles from Trenton,
New Jersey to the mouth of the Delaware Bay. (submitted by Room 19)
The 6-9 students in Room 19 are providing tours of their Delaware Estuary
exhibit in the lobby. This exhibit is based on their research on the estuary’s
habitat, understanding what an estuary is, where the Delaware Estuary is, the
impact of oil spills, pesticides, and litter on the estuary habitat, how one can
help protect the estuary and the benefits of organic gardening. Their work
includes library and internet research on the estuary, writing reports, and
recreating scale size artwork of their animals. This exhibit is the culminating
project of this study unit and allows the children to share their knowledge with
the school community, while also developing confidence through public
speaking. Their final presentation will be on Thursday April 30th @10:45 a.m.
Wilmington Montessori School is a
