For many brands, there’s no greater marketing opportunity than motorsports.
Why? Motorsports have a huge, loyal audience of consumers and
corporations that are ready to hear about your brand.
Advertising and sponsorships create exposure, promote brand attributes, drive sales and educate
consumers, however that’s only the beginning. When advertising is the base of a strategic activation
programme, the benefits reach well beyond traditional marketing platforms.
For a unique marketing opportunity and promote your brand in the official Monster Energy SuperGP
Champions Trophy publication, please find herewith the rate card and artwork deadlines.

Welcome
from GAS Sports
Dear Competitors
and Race Fans
It has been over 25 years since the National
Motorcycle Circuit Racing Championship visited
KZN shores. GAS Sports is naturally delighted to
bring the Monster Energy SuperGP Championship
Trophy back to Durban and we are looking forward
to a fantastic weekend of motorcycle racing in
this 2.4km temporary race circuit. None of this
would have been possible without the support and
efforts of some very important stakeholders, so right
upfront we must acknowledge Transet, the City of
Program Round 5 v2.indd 4
Durban and associated authorities, KDG Logistics,
KZN Tourism and Russell Wood for their support and
respective contributions in making this event a
reality for all of us.
Kwa-Zulu Natal is home to the third largest
motorcycle market in South Africa and whilst the
province and City of Durban have played host to
major international four wheeled motorsport events,
the two wheel fraternity have been starved of

03
premium motorsport events. Our motorcycle
manufacturer partners and teams are delighted to
be here and will no doubt put on a fantastic show for
all of us.
The Monster Energy SuperGP Champions Trophy is
the dawn of a new era of motorcycle racing in South
Africa, with race bikes being closer in specification to
their production counterparts than ever before. The
shift in the regulations has made the barrier and costs
to entry more accessible to teams and riders and the
overall sustainability and growth of the sport in a far
healthier state. Most importantly, the championship
thus far has delivered nothing short of incredibly
exciting and entertaining racing with insane on-track
battles in all three categories. We welcome you to
the all-new motorcycle only national championship.
Make sure you read the Race Preview on pages
8 to 9 for a quick insight into the various category
contenders.
In addition to our acknowledgement of this events
specific partners, we must also extend a huge thank
you to our Title Sponsor Monster Energy and our
Official Partners: Pirelli, Vox Telecom and Discover
Digital, plus our official suppliers: SYM Scooters
and NGL Logistics for their continued support of
the championship. We salute the motorcycle
manufacturers, namely Kawasaki, Triumph, Honda,
Yamaha, BMW and Suzuki, who continue to support
the competitors, teams and the championship. Every
premier championship around the world requires the
support and participation of the brands behind the
bikes to ensure long-term sustainability and South
Africa is no different. We look forward to welcoming
two new manufacturers to our paddock in 2015, so
watch this space.
We have just completed our mid-season review in
which GAS Sports, the competitors, the manufactures
and Motorsport South Africa participated in a workshop
to debate the 2015 sporting and technical rules, with
a view to agreeing a draft set of 2015 regulations
before September. We are very encouraged by the
majority opinion that only minor adjustments should
be made to existing rules and that they should then
be fixed for the next two to three years. In addition,
we have been approached by some of the regional
championships who have expressed their intent to
align their respective regional championship rules
with that of the National SuperGP Championship.
Both of the above provide vindication that the
tough decisions taken by the collective stakeholders
in shaping the rules for this year, were the correct
decisions. Thank you to all for your suggestions and
contributions thus far. We are committed to building
the Monster Energy SuperGP Champions Trophy into
a leading national sports property through a strong
marketing and promotions plan, television coverage,
exciting racing and sound governance and policing
Program Round 5 v2.indd 5
of the technical and sporting regulations to ensure
fair competition. It is heartening to hear from many of
you that you already believe we have achieved world
class status and that the championship is already
the best national motorsport property – thank you!
Rest assured we will not rest on our laurels. We have
historically only delivered international motorsport
events and we are treating this championship as
if it were the same. Your continued feedback is of
huge value to us, so please feel free to send us more
suggestions to [email protected].
Month on month, we have seen an encouraging
increase in the media’s following of this exciting
new championship. The media and the reach that
is provided through their respective mediums are
key to the growth and turn-around strategy we
have for this sport. We continue to build on our live
streaming audience. Our last event was viewed
live over the internet by viewers in more than 39
countries. This weekend’s race will be streamed
live via www.supergp.co.za and we will also be
introducing ‘SuperGP on Demand’ soon. This new
web feature will allow you to watch each archived
race whenever you want by simply selecting the
race link under the new On-demand section of
the website and your selected race will play. Many
thanks to Discover Digital for making this all possible.
On the traditional television broadcast side, we are
delighted to announce our partnership with SABC3.
Our premier category, the Monster Energy SuperGP,
will be broadcast live between 15h00 and 16h00 this
weekend. This marks yet another major milestone
in transition of our sport as it has been well over a
decade since a national championship had any live
television coverage. There is more to come, so again
watch this space. Thank you to all at SABC for the
months of preparation and work with GAS Sports to
bring this sport back to national broadcast status.
As we close this letter, we thank each and every one
of you who have attended this event. We have made
history together this weekend and as we write this, we
do so with a level of confidence that the KZN SuperGP
will be the blue chip event of this year’s championship
– thank you for your patronage. Please continue to
follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, We Chat,
www.supergp.co.za and on SABC3.
To all competitors may the best man and machine
win but be closely pursued. May the battles on the
track be fierce and comradery off it be sporting. Race
on for Champions Trophy honours.

MONSTER ENERGY
SUPERGP CHAMPIONS
TROPHY MAKES
HISTORY IN KZN
The second half of the 2014 national motorcycle circuit racing championships –
the Monster Energy SuperGP Champions Trophy – sees the long-awaited return
of national championship circuit racing to KwaZulu-Natal after a break of more
than 25 years. The KwaZulu-Natal SuperGP takes place on a brand new circuit
laid out on Runway South of the old Durban International Airport this weekend.
Program Round 5 v2.indd 10
2014/08/19 10:30 AM

After four rounds of the inaugural new-look all-motorcycle
series – at Phakisa Freeway in the Free State, Red Star
Raceway in Mpumalanga, Killarney circuit in Cape Town
and the old grand prix circuit in East London – all three
race categories have clear leaders, but the competition
remains close and the quality of riding is of the highest
class.
The headline act is the Monster Energy SuperGP, a
unique South African national championship category
for 1 000 cc base-level evo rules machines with limited
modifications.
The support categories include Super600, like SuperGP
a national championship for base-level 600 cc evo rules
bikes with less modifications than the previous Supersport
category. Rounding out the menu is the new SuperM,
which carries challenge status and covers entries
from Super600M, which is equivalent to the Supersport
category for modified machines; Superbikes, the existing
category for modified 1 000 cc machines; SuperMasters,
for SuperGP riders aged over 35 on 1 000 cc bikes
complying with the Superbikes technical regulations;
and SuperTwins, which caters for 1 000 to 1 200 cc twincylinder modified machines.
All rounds follow the format of the FIM Superbike World
Championship, with practice and qualifying on Saturday
and racing on Sunday.
Four-wheeled racing will also be included on the
programme for the first time this season. “The Monster
Energy SuperGP Champions Trophy is normally an allbike weekend of racing,” said Anthony Lauter, Executive
Director of GAS Sports, managers and promoters of the
national motorcycle championships. “Because we will
be staging our fifth round on a ‘green’ circuit, that is
one that has never been raced on before, we need to
lay down some rubber for traction and ensure that the
competing bikes can achieve safe grip on the tarmac.
“So we have invited the Porsche Club to be a part of
the weekend’s entertainment and will be staging a
demonstration of the club’s exciting Challenge series
with two races on Saturday, in between practice and
qualifying for Sunday’s six bike races. In addition, there
will be a stunt bike show performed by XDL Super Stunt on
Saturday and Sunday.”
Clint Seller is the man in SuperGP. Despite seeing a run of
three successive wins in SuperGP come to an end in the
previous round in East London, when Lance Isaacs upset
the Seller apple cart with a fine first win on the Black Swan
Energy BMW S1000RR, the reigning Superbike champion
enjoys a healthy 27-point lead over Brent Harran (Mantella
Trading Kawasaki ZX10). This is thanks to six wins and a
second from eight starts. Isaacs is third, six points behind
Harran, and these three riders can be expected to deliver
the same kind of world-class performances that had the
Buffalo City fans on their feet.
Program Round 5 v2.indd 11
Other podium contenders this weekend include
Kawasaki riders Brandon Goode (CJ Auto/Network Blue
ZX10) Ronald Slamet (Novel Ford/Mike Hopkins ZX10) and
Garrick Vlok (ZX10).
Six wins from eight starts – the last four in a row – see
Steven Odendaal (PS Race! Kawasaki ZX6RR) in control
of the Super600 championship at the halfway stage with
179 points. A big lead of 59 points – equivalent to more
than two race wins – separates him from second-placed
Dean Vos (Emtek/Brother Yamaha R6), who has five
podiums to his credit and two runner-up finishes in rounds
two and four.
Matthew Scholtz (Mantella Trading Kawasaki ZX6RR) is
third with 116 points despite two DNFs – in round two at
Red Star and in round four in East London. Anthony Shelley
(Fercor Projects Kawasaki ZX6RR) and reigning Supersport
champion Cameron Petersen (Emtek/Brother Yamaha
R6) are the only other riders to have stood on the top
step of the podium this season and are currently fourth
and fifth respectively in the championship with 90 and 87
points respectively. Petersen, in particular, will be hoping
to add a rich points haul after two uncharacteristic DNFs
in round four.
Kyle Robinson (Fantech Kawasaki ZX10) came back to
the SuperM Challenge with a bang after missing round
three in Cape Town, winning both races in East London
and taking his points total to 140, a healthy 46 ahead
of second-placed Justin Gillensen (Portable Shade
Kawasaki ZX10R). Beau Levey (Motos KTM Klerksdorp KTM
RCB 1190) is third with 81 points, 13 behind Gillensen and
just two ahead of Janine Davies (Enbridge Torque-Sure
Consultants BMW S1000RR).
The sole female rider was the recipient of Levey’s
generosity and fine sportsmanship in East London, when
he loaned her his spare bike for the second race after
Davies crashed her BMW at speed through the infamous
Potter’s Pass. This enabled the plucky lady to score some
valuable points and stay in contention for a top-three
finish in the SuperM Challenge.
Two high-profile first-time entries this year in SuperM see
Sheridan Morais and Chris Leeson line up on the grid this
weekend on Kawasaki ZX10 1 000 cc machines backed
by Pride Logistics, Cazzmania Signs and EmTek Racing.
Morais, 29, was SA Superbike champion in 2005, 2008 and
2009 and Supersport champion in 2009 and is currently
contesting the FIM Superbike World Championship on
a privateer Iron Brain Grellini Kawasaki ZX-10R Evo. He
is 18th overall with a best result of sixth after nine of the
13 rounds. Leeson, 24, was SA Supersport champion in
2007 and runner-up to Clint Seller in last year’s Superbike
championship on a factory BMW HP4.

Sykes wins race
number eight and leads
into summer break
The ninth round of the FIM Superbike World
Championship, at Laguna Seca in the USA, saw Tom
Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) secure a podium place
in race one and then follow it up with his eighth race
win of the 2014 season, to extend his championship
lead. David Salom (Kawasaki Racing Team) edged
the EVO field in both races to put himself into a
commanding lead in this class.
In the battle of the EVO riders it was Salom who took the
honours coming home in 10th with Niccolò Canepa
(Althea Racing Ducati) 11th and Sylvain Barrier (BMW
Motorrad Italia) 12th.
After a long summer break, the next round of the
championship will be at Jerez in Spain on September 7.
Race 2
Race 1
Marco Melandri won the opening race of the day.
Starting from pole position, it was Sykes who initially
took the holeshot into turn one ahead of the Aprilia
Racing Team duo of Melandri and Sylvain Guintoli,
who both passed the reigning champion at the end of
lap one after Sykes made a mistake at the Corkscrew.
Chaz Davies (Ducati Superbike Team) crashed
spectacularly from 4th on lap two as the leading
three began to edge away from the fast-starting Leon
Haslam (Pata Honda World Superbike Team), who was
promoted to 4th after the Ducati rider’s departure.
South Africa’s Sheridan Morais finished 20th, three
laps down after technical problems on his Iron Brain
Grillini Kawasaki.
The second race was as hot on track as the air
temperature. After two red flags and restarts, Sykes
came out victorious in the seven-lap sprint race. It
was his 22nd career win and the reigning champion
added one point to his championship lead over
Guintoli, second at the flag and now 44 points behind.
Rea completed the podium, finishing on a high note
in his first visit to Laguna Seca.
From the first start it was Sykes who once again
grabbed the holeshot into turn one and as the packed
field sorted themselves out around the first few turns
it was Guintoli and race one winner and team-mate
Melandri who slotted himself into second and third
ahead of the fast starting Laverty.
At the flag it was a rather spread out affair with
Melandri taking the win, his 3rd of the season, ahead
of Guintoli and Sykes.
Guintoli applied the pressure immediately and after
following the reigning champion for a couple of laps
made his move, taking the lead into turn 6 on lap 5
only to lose it straight afterwards as Sykes successfully
fought back. Melandri also seized the moment to take
advantage of an off line Guintoli to move into third as
the battle at the front now raged between six riders
after Giugliano and Elias looked to get in on the act.
Davide Giugliano (Ducati Superbike Team) finished
4th with Toni Elias (Red Devils Roma Aprilia) and
Jonathan Rea (Pata Honda World Superbike Team)
completing the top six.
Lap 11 saw the red flags shown after Alex Lowes
(Voltcom Crescent Suzuki) suffered a spectacular
crash at the Corkscrew. The British rider was taken to
the medical centre for further checks but fortunately
As the race entered the final third, the tense battle at
the front intensified as Giuntoli applied the pressure to
his Italian team-mate with Sykes watching the action
unfold in front of him before the Italian broke away.

the reigning BSB Champion got away with no fractures.
After a short delay the race was restarted over 7 laps
with grid positions decided by the race positions prior
to the stop. That meant Sykes was still on Pole with the
Aprilia duo of Melandri and Guintoli alongside. Row
two for the restart saw Laverty, Elias and Giugliano.
When the race resumed the action was fast and
furious but after only one completed lap the red flags
were out again as Barrier crashed out on BMW on the
start and finish straight.
was completed with Sykes taking the win ahead of
Guintoli and Rea who completed the podium places
after Melandri crashed out of the lead, followed a
short time later by Giugliano who had been charging
through the field.
Eugene Laverty (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki), Toni Elias
(Red Devils Roma Aprilia) and Loris Baz (Kawasaki
Racing Team) rounded out the top six while in the EVO
category the best classified rider was once again
Salom who finished a respectable 8th overall. Morais
finished 13th and right behind Australian team-mate
Brian Staring.
However, at the third time of asking the race distance

WASTE TYRES
South Africa is littered with millions of waste tyres. They pollute the environment, create fire
hazards and are breeding grounds for vermin and mosquitoes that spread disease.
The problem is escalating annually.
The time has come to turn this around. REDISA aims to not only reduce tyre pollution,
but also help with South Africa’s unemployment rate by creating over 10 000 jobs
over the next five years.
REDISA helps the tyre industry take responsibility for
its waste, by turning it into worth.

MONSTER ENERGY
SUPERGP CHAMPIONS TROPHY
Making NEWS
GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP ALIVE AND WELL AMONG SUPERGP COMPETITORS
It might be a different story on the track, before the chequered flag signals the end of hostilities, but off the track
genuine camaraderie and good sportsmanship is alive and well. A good example of this was the generous gesture
by SuperM competitor Beau Levey, who loaned his spare KTM to Janine for the second race in round four in East
London after she crashed her BMW at high speed in Potter’s Pass in race one. This enabled the plucky lady to score
some valuable points and stay in contention for a top-three finish in the SuperM Challenge. She is just two points
behind third-placed Levey after the first four rounds. Nice one, Beau!
Janine is a fighter. Apart from being the first female rider to compete on a 1 000 cc Superbike on a national level and
the first to score a podium race result, she is the survivor of a serious, 180 km/h crash at Zwartkops Raceway in 2007,
when she broke her neck. That she survived and returned to the track is a testament to her determination, strength of
character and passion for motor sport.
SA RIDERS FLY FLAG HIGH OVERSEAS
South African motorcycle racers are flying the national flag high and with distinction in various overseas
championships.
Brad Binder, who turned 19 on August 11, brother of local Super600 competitor Darryn, 16, is contesting the FIM
World Road Racing Championship in the Moto3 category on a privateer 250 cc Mahindra. At the Sachsenring
in Germany on July 13 he finished second and became the first South African to achieve a world championship
motorcycle racing podium since Mario Rademeyer in the 1985 SA GP at Kyalami. He is currently ninth in the
championship after finishing ninth in round 10 of the 19-round championship at Indianapolis on Sunday (August
10). He has been competing overseas since 2010, first in the Red Bull Rookie competition and since 2012 in Moto3.
The Binder brothers are following in the footsteps of famous sibling combinations like Pol and Aleix Espargaro, Marc
and Alex Marquez, Nicky, Tommy and Roger Lee Hayden and our own Dave, Robbie, Keith and Gary Petersen.
Allan-Jon Venter, 26, who competes in our Super600 class on a Wiesenhof Triumph 675, was the only South African
competing on the Isle of Man this year and came home with finishers medals in all of the five classes he entered
– Senior TT on a Superstock Honda CBR 1000; Superbike, Superstock and Supersport on a Honda 600; and also on
a Kawasaki 650 in the lightweight class. It was his second visit to IOM – last year he was a guest of the Isle of Man
Government – and he missed two rounds of the SA champs so that he could make it a second time.
AJ runs his own rider training school at Red Star Raceway in Mpumalanga. He spent six years in the United Kingdom,
from 2006 until 2012, riding as a privateer in British Superbikes, Superstock and Supersport, with his best achievement
finishing third in the 2008 British Superstock 600 championship.
Sheridan Morais, 29, SA Superbike champion in 2005, 2008 and 2009 and Supersport champion in 2009, is
contesting the FIM Superbike World Championship on a privateer Iron Brain Grellini Kawasaki ZX-10R Evo, where he
is currently 18th overall with a best result of sixth after nine of the 13 rounds. Australian team-mate Brian Staring is
22nd. Shez has been flying the SA flag high in world championship racing where he is a veteran of 84 races in the
Superstock, Supersport and Superbike categories since 2006. He has 32 Superstock 1000 races between 2006 and
2011 under his belt, including two podiums, plus 26 Supersport and 26 Superbike races since 2009.
He competed in a single round of the Supersport world championship in 2009 on a privateer Yamaha and followed
this with three rounds in 2010 on a Honda and an Aprilia. Arguably his best year was 2012 when he was team-mate
to double world champion Keenan Sofuoglu of Turkey on a privateer Kawasaki, finishing sixth in the championship
with a best result of third in Spain. Last year he was 12th last year on a Honda and a Kawasaki, with best rides a fifth
in both Portugal and France.
He also competed in two rounds of the 2009 WSBK on a Kawasaki and three rounds in 2010 on a Honda and
an Aprilia.
Dave McFadden, 24, is currently joint fifth in the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup riding a privateer MRS Kawasaki ZX-10R
with a best result of third in round five of seven at Portimao in Portugal in July. The 2011 South African Supersport
champion has to date made 16 appearances in Superstock, two in Superbike (2012) and one in Supersport (2013).
McFlash realised a dream to compete internationally on a Superbike when he was offered a ride on a Team
Pedercini Kawasazi ZX-10R at Misano in Italy in a round of the FIM Superstock Cup. It came at a time when he was
mourning the death of his brother and crew chief Mark, and he did well to qualify 10th on his first international
grid. Unfortunately, it did not end well when he crashed while battling to keep the Kawasaki upright with a loose
handlebar and brake problems. He contested five rounds of the Superstock Cup in 2012 and finished the season
17th. Last year he rode in six races and was 16th.
