WGBH is kicking off 2013 with two very different kinds of dramas, each
riveting in its own way. The first needs almost no introduction. Downton
Abbey Season 3 on the WGBH-produced Masterpiece finally is here (page 10),
and it was worth the wait. Seasons 1 and 2 took home nine Primetime Emmy
Awards and a Golden Globe for Best Miniseries. The Hollywood Reporter has
called the series “one of the great melodramas of the modern television age.”
Now the Great War is over and the long-awaited engagement of Lady
Mary and Matthew is on, but the landscape is hardly tranquil. Set against a
backdrop of wrenching social changes where nothing
is assured, “Downton Abbey will seduce you with its
sumptuously spread-out plot,” promises WGBH’s
Rebecca Eaton, Masterpiece executive producer.
Mark your calendar for Sunday, January 6 at 9pm on
WGBH 2, for the start of more of the captivating drama
you and millions of viewers count on every week.
Two nights later, on Tuesday, January 8 at 9pm on WGBH 2 (page 12),
we’re bringing you drama of another sort. On the 150th anniversary of the
Emancipation Proclamation, WGBH’s award-winning history series American
Experience presents The Abolitionists, a three-part docudrama that explores
how anti-slavery allies—black and white, male and female, Southern and
Northern—turned a fringe movement into a force that changed the world.
“This was an incredibly difficult story to tell,” says WGBH’s Sharon
Grimberg, an executive producer for the documentary and senior producer
for American Experience. “There’s a huge amount of
literature about the abolitionists, but there is no single
book that tells the story of the movement. A lot of
people think that Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves—
and indeed he issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
But in many ways, the abolitionists of this country—
the men and women who struggled and fought and
tried for 30 years to convince slave owners to abolish slavery—they’re the
people who really made it happen. And most Americans don’t know that
story at all.”
The drama doesn’t end with the series. You can explore the abolitionist
movement in America through American Experience’s interactive map that
includes walking tours of key abolitionist strongholds here in Boston, as well
as in Cincinnati, Philadelphia and Charleston. Uncover history, and add your
own insights. It’s available as an iPhone app and an interactive website at
pbs.org/americanexperience.
Gripping drama. Groundbreaking history. It all happens because of your
generous annual support. Thank you for helping us start the New Year strong.

volcanoes are among the most spectacular and powerful forces on our
planet. They create new land, change landscapes and destroy civilizations. This six-part series takes you from the depths of the oceans to
the tops of snow-covered summits to reveal what is needed to survive
around volcanoes. See how volcanologists try to predict eruptions and
protect people, find out how sooty terns and Alvin shrimp have

WGBH is building a library of mobile apps for your iPhone or iPad, offering
you and your family fresh, interactive content. We have apps for all ages,
and every month we will choose one (or more) to highlight.
Martha Speaks to Kids
Education is at the heart of WGBH’s mission, and apps have proven to
be an effective learning tool for children. Take the Martha Speaks Dog
Party iPhone app inspired by WGBH’s curriculum-based television series
Martha Speaks. Independent studies show that playing the app gives
kids a 31 percent vocabulary boost.
Building on the success of Dog Party, WGBH this fall launched two
new Martha apps: Martha Speaks Story Maker for iPhones, and Martha
Speaks Word Spinner for iPads. With Story Maker, kids can create eight
different stories with Martha, who then reads their stories aloud. Word
Spinner gets the whole family involved, giving up to four players the
chance to compete in six fun and interactive mini-games. Along the
way, kids develop their storytelling and oral vocabulary skills.
Apps like Dog Party can get kids talking about the words they are
learning, says Bill Shribman, senior executive producer for WGBH’s
Children’s Media. “When kids say words out loud something magical
happens,” Shribman says. “They begin to understand the meaning of
the words they hear. It’s amazing to see learning in action.”
The Martha Speaks Dog Party, Story Maker and Word Spinner apps are
available on iTunes.

Just in time for the new year, Downton Abbey is returning on WGBH’s
Masterpiece, with seven new episodes that take you back inside the
majestic and melodramatic English country estate. Last season closed
with the reluctant heir to Downton, Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens),
recovered from his war wounds and ready to tie the knot with the
eldest of Lord and Lady Grantham’s daughters, Lady Mary (Michelle
Dockery). Meanwhile, Mary’s youngest sister, Sybil (Jessica BrownFindlay), had eloped to Ireland with the political-minded chauffeur,
Branson (Allen Leech), and was expecting a child.
A tantalizing glimpse ahead: Downton’s
impeccable butler, Carson (Jim Carter),
breaks in a new footman, who happens to
be the nephew of the scheming lady’s
maid O’Brien (Siobhan Finneran). Following
Matthew and Mary’s engagement, Lord
Grantham sticks to his duty to maintain
Downton more firmly than ever—even as other great houses are
crippled psychologically and financially in the wake of World War I.
In this changing landscape nothing is assured. Could it be that even
the war-weary Crawleys must fight a new battle to safeguard their
beloved Downton?
Masterpiece Classic/Downton Abbey Season 3
Sun, 1/6, 1/13, 1/20 & 1/27 at 9pm on WGBH 2
Premiere on 1/6 is two hours; episodes 2–4 are one hour each.
The season concludes with three episodes in February.
Crossing the Pond
When producers sought an actress to
play the formidable American mother
of Downton Abbey’s New York-bred
Countess of Grantham (Elizabeth
McGovern), they had to look no
further than the legendary Shirley
MacLaine. With six Academy Award
nominations, more than 50 feature
films and a current one-woman show
to her credit, the Hollywood veteran was the perfect fit for the part.
Her character, Martha Levinson, arrives just before the nuptials of Lady
Mary and Matthew Crawley, and in no time raises the hackles of her
British counterpart, the indomitable Dowager Countess of Grantham
(Dame Maggie Smith). Step back, and let the parrying begin!

Signed Red Sox Ball = $?
WGBH’s Antiques Roadshow starts its 17th season in Corpus Christi,
Texas, with a bang: a lost Diego Rivera painting, created when the artist
was only 18 years old, is valued at $800,000–$1,000,000. That’s just
one of the highlights of
the season’s 21 new
episodes from seven
cities across the nation,
including Boston. In the
first of three Boston
shows (premiering
January 28), host Mark
Walberg and appraiser
Wes Cowan look at a
famous and controversial Paul Revere print. Other show appraisers
examine a Norman Rockwell collection from a guest who modeled for
the artist as a child, an Aldro Hibbard oil painting brought in by Boston
Mayor Tom Menino, and a Red Sox World Series team-signed ball.
And for the first time ever, you can get a top-to-bottom look at
how the show comes together in WGBH’s Behind the Scenes special.
Arts reporter Jared Bowen tracks down host Mark Walberg on location
at the Old Statehouse, gets insider tips from the all-important appraisers, and follows Mayor Menino, who arrives at the Roadshow with high
hopes for some freshly discovered paintings.

A More Perfect Union
Radicals. Agitators. Troublemakers. Liberators. Called by many names,
the abolitionists tore the nation apart in order to make a more perfect
union. Men and women, black and white, Northerners and
Southerners, poor and wealthy, these passionate anti-slavery activists
fought body and soul in the most important civil rights crusade in
American history. What began as
a pacifist movement fueled by
persuasion and prayer became a
fiery and furious struggle that
forever changed the nation.
In The Abolitionists, WGBH’s
American Experience brings to life
the intertwined stories of
Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison, Angelina Grimké, Harriet
Beecher Stowe and John Brown. The film takes place during some of
the most violent and contentious decades in American history, amid
religious passions that set souls on fire, and bitter debates over the
meaning of the Constitution and the nature of race. The documentary
reveals how the movement shaped history by exposing the fatal flaw
of a republic founded on liberty for some and bondage for others,
setting the nation on a collision course. In the face of personal risks—
beatings, imprisonment, even death—abolitionists held fast to their
cause, laying the civil rights groundwork for the future and raising
weighty constitutional and moral questions that are with us still.

Mapping a Movement
ADvERTISEMENT
Explore the story of the abolitionist movement in America through our
interactive map. Available both as an iPhone app and interactive
website, the Abolitionist Map of America makes clear that the legacy
of the abolitionists’ long struggle resides not in the remote past, but in
the living present. Featuring walking tours of the key abolitionist
strongholds of Boston, Cincinnati and Philadelphia, as well as the
formerly slave-holding city of Charleston, the map explores important
moments, characters and locations connected to the story of the
abolitionist movement. Working with partners nationwide, American
Experience has populated the map with photographs, documents and
video clips from The Abolitionists to illustrate how the anti-slavery
movement left indelible marks on local communities. You also can
upload your own photos, videos and audio files to the map. Find it on

Murder in
Midsomer
The rural countryside of a fictional
county in England provides the
backdrop for this crime series based
on the novels of Caroline Graham.
A lush visual style, quirky characters
and ubiquitous red herrings recall
classic public television British mysteries of the past. At the center of the Midsomer Murders investigations
is detective chief inspector Tom Barnaby, played by actor John
Nettles (Bergerac). In the first two shows, someone decides to turn
Midsomer Deverell’s memorial garden into a tea shop, a move that
proves to be a fatal mistake for more than one person. DCI Barnaby’s
criminal investigation uncovers a tumultuous trail of ruined dreams,
scandalous love affairs and vicious blackmail—all leading straight to
the killer.

Introducing DCI Banks
Stephen Tompkinson and Andrea Lowe star as the tenacious and
stubborn chief inspector Alan Banks and the feisty and headstrong
detective sergeant Annie Cabbot in DCI Banks, a series of thrilling
crime stories based on crime writer Peter Robinson’s novels. What
makes Banks different from other investigators? “He’s very much an
‘everyman’ type of character, which is why so many readers can
identify with him,” Robinson writes in The Telegraph. “He’s no super
sleuth or hard man, simply a flawed,
passionate, occasionally naive and
sometimes deeply insightful man.”
Follow DCI Banks and his team this
month in two programs as they
discover a serial killer and investigate
an houseboat fire that turns out to
be more than just a case of arson.

Finding Cultural Identity
Eliaichi Kimaro is a mixed-race, first-generation American with a
Tanzanian father and Korean mother. When her retired father moved
back to Tanzania, Kimaro decided to document his path back to his
family and Chagga culture. In the process, she struggled with her
own relationship to Tanzania, and
uncovered a cycle of violence that
resonates with her work and life in
the US. A part of the Afropop
series, A Lot Like You raises
questions about the cultures we
inherit and the cultures we choose
to pass down, and reveals how
simply bearing witness to another’s
truth-telling can break silences that have lasted lifetimes.

Nature’s Raconteur
In honor of Sir David Attenborough’s 60th anniversary on television,
this three-part miniseries focuses on three fields the naturalist says
have been transformed most profoundly: filmmaking, science and
the environment. Illustrated with
remastered sequences that the BBC’s
Attenborough spent 60 years capturing,
the program contains new interviews
in which Attenborough revisits the
locations featured in his landmark series,
and shares personal anecdotes of time
spent surveying life on Earth.

This six-part series combines history,
biography, iconic performances, new
analysis and the personal passion of its
celebrated hosts—Ethan Hawke,
Jeremy Irons, Derek Jacobi, Trevor
Nunn, Joely Richardson and David
Tennant—to tell the story behind the stories of Shakespeare’s greatest plays. Each episode combines interviews with actors, directors and
scholars, along with visits to key locations, clips from some of the most
celebrated film and television adaptations, and illustrative excerpts
from the plays specially staged for the series at Shakespeare’s Globe

What Happened to
Little Lindy?
In the aftermath of his 1927 solo
transatlantic flight, Charles Lindbergh
became the most famous human
being on Earth. When he and his wife,
Anne, had a son, Charlie, the press
dubbed him Little Lindy. On March 1,
1932, kidnappers snatched Little Lindy from the family home near
Hopewell, New Jersey. Negotiations stretched out for weeks, but
Charlie never returned. His body was discovered not five miles from
Hopewell. Now, WGBH’s Nova is reopening one of the most confounding crime mysteries of all time as a team of expert investigators
employs state-of-the-art forensic and behavioral science techniques in
an effort to determine what really happened to Lindbergh’s baby—
and why.

Capturing New England’s
Character
Tune in Windows to the Wild to
tour some of New England’s
unique natural environments. Host
and outdoor adventurer Willem
Lange offers insights into the
history, ecology and special
character of each place visited and
gives viewers quiet moments to
reflect on the beauty and splendor
of the natural world. In Celebrating the Hikes and Life of an Old-Timer,
Lange talks with 89-year-old nature lover Don vandenburgh before
climbing the Fishin’ Jimmy Trail with two of his own sons to take a look
at the beautiful new shelter they built to replace the old one at
Kinsman Pond above Franconia Notch. Produced by New Hampshire
Public Television.

Here’s the Thing…
According to United Nations and US State Department reports, the
smuggling of human beings for the purposes of forced labor and sexual
exploitation now is the third largest source of profits for international

Phillip Martin, senior reporter

Classical New England
Let Freedom Sing
By Benjamin K. Roe
Managing Director of Classical Services
“Any good crusade requires singing,” reformers like to say, and in the
19th century, no cause was more righteous than the decades-long
crusade to abolish slavery. This month, as American Experience presents
the three-part, WGBH-produced special The Abolitionists (see page 12),
Classical New England presents Let Freedom Sing: The Music of the
Abolitionists. Let Freedom Sing chronicles the idealistic artists, uncompromising personalities and powerful music of the era, and looks at how
these forces combined to turn abolitionism from a scorned fringe
movement into a nation-changing force.
An original WGBH-Classical New England production hosted by NPR’s
Noah Adams, Let Freedom Sing will profile such powerful figures as Henry
Russell, the barnstorming Anglo-Jewish pianist and singer dubbed the
master of “chutzpah and huzzah”; the Milford, New Hampshire-based
Hutchinson Family Singers, remembered as America’s first protest singers;
and abolitionist leader and newspaper publisher William Lloyd Garrison,
whose “Song of the Abolitionist” (set to the tune of “Auld Lang Syne”)
literally set the tone for the entire movement. Garrison believed strongly
in setting stanzas to familiar melodies—for poetry, he held, was
“naturally and instinctively on the side of liberty.” And we’ll explain how
“My Country, ‘Tis of Thee” evolved from a patriotic ditty penned in a halfhour by Andover Theological Seminary student Samuel Francis Smith to a
stirring anthem of equality famously sung by Marian Anderson in 1939
on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial…and reprised by Aretha Franklin
on the West Lawn of the US Capitol for the inauguration of President
Barack Obama in 2009.
Join us this month for Let Freedom Sing, the story of these remarkable 19th-century artists who, as one abolitionist song writer penned,
exhibited “fearless advocacy, signal ability, and wonderful success on
behalf of their Brothers and Sisters in Bonds.”

Ten Years of Harmony on
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
By Benjamin K. Roe
Managing Director of Classical Services
“Life’s piano can only produce melodies of brotherhood (and sisterhood) when
it is recognized that the black keys are as basic, necessary and beautiful as
the white keys.”
—Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The abolitionist songs of the 1860s were the direct forerunners of the protest
anthems of the 1960s, particularly those associated with the civil rights
movement, as exemplified by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
But music in King’s life went
far beyond “We Shall Overcome.”
The earliest evidence can be found
in his boyhood home in Atlanta,
steps away from the celebrated
Ebenezer Baptist Church, pastored
by his father, Daddy King.
King may have been the son of
a preacher, but he also was the son
of a choir director. When you walk in the King house, the first room you enter
is an intimate front parlor, dominated by a battered old upright piano. Here
is where King’s mother would lead the Ebenezer choir through weekly
rehearsals, where his father first noted four-year-old Martin’s “fine, clear
singing voice,” and where Martin struggled through piano lessons.
Later, King would take his own place in the Ebenezer choir, join the
prestigious Glee Club of Morehouse College, and marry a young New
England Conservatory soprano named Coretta Scott. Forever after, it was the
distinctly musical style of speaking that made Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. one
of this century’s greatest and most persuasive orators. It’s no accident that
his speeches and writings are filled with references to music.
It’s because there is a vital musical core to King’s life and message that
the Boston Children’s Chorus and its collection of “fine, clear singing voices”
began what is now a 10-year tradition of honoring what King referred to as
the “beloved community,” on the national holiday celebrating his birth on
January 21. “Arguably, there is no better way to celebrate the Martin Luther
King holiday than with diverse youth singing at levels of excellence,” says
BCC artistic director Anthony Trecek-King. “This concert is the embodiment
of Dr. King’s dream: that young people of all colors can transcend racial
barriers to share their gifts and talents.”
In recent years, organizers have stressed that the King holiday (still new
enough to be spared car sales and mattress ads) should be a “day on, not a
day off,” devoted to the spirit of civic action and community volunteerism for
which King was known. In that spirit, Trecek-King and the choir will be pulling double duty, first joining Classical New England host Laura Carlo in
WGBH’s Fraser Performance Studio at 9am on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day for
a special preview of the choir’s 10th annual tribute concert in advance of the
choir’s performance at 12noon in New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall.
In his Letter from the Birmingham Jail written almost 50 years ago,
King expressed his belief that, “We are caught in an inescapable network of
mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny.” I can’t think of a better way
of celebrating that mutuality than hearing voices joined together in song,
performing music that inspired him and that he, in turn, inspired.

Bird News Soars to Saturday
By Mindy Todd
WCAI Managing Director for Editorial and Host
There are 51.3 million birders in the US and that number continues to
grow, according to the US Fish & Wildlife Service. With one in five Americans
identifying themselves as birders, it’s no wonder that ornithologist Vernon
Laux’s Bird News segment on my show The Point is one of WCAI’s most
popular programs.
Beginning in February, we’re launching a weekend pilot program with
Vern and myself to further explore the world of birds. The way these creatures live is extraordinary, as is their appeal to the human psyche. They strike
a chord with every age group, from babies to centenarians. Listen in for a
look into birding: it may open up a whole new world for you!
Vern has been enthralled with birds since childhood. “Imagine for a
moment being able to fly. Then imagine flying to the ends of the Earth twice
annually—yes, I am jealous of birds and their abilities,” he says. “Summer in
the Arctic, winter in the Tropics, I want in.”
Producer Amy Vince is on the bird beat as well. ”Bird News on The Point
with Mindy and Vern has been a longtime listener favorite,” she says. “We’re

“Are you that Bird Guy?” is a familiar
question to Vern, who is continually
amazed and delighted at the diversity
of listeners who tune in Bird News. And
listeners are just as delighted at being
able to ask questions about bird activities
they’ve witnessed, or birds they’ve seen
but can’t identify.
“From learning about diverse families, migration and breeding behavior to
just trying to identify the ones at your
feeders—birds are an endless source of
fascination and enjoyment,” Vern says.
