hen meeting new people, I am often asked what I do. As quickly as I respond, “I work for hospice” comes the
all too familiar response, “That must be so depressing.” For some time, I used to smile uncomfortably, not know-
ing how to respond. Four years and a few too many awkward conversations later, I now reply with confidence,
“Hospice can be sad, but it is rarely depressing.”
Last winter, Circle of Caring at Hospice of the Good Shepherd hosted Dr. Maria Sirois, who spoke on “Faith,
Hope & Resilience in the Presence of Suffering.” In her first book, every day counts, Dr. Sirois writes, “Even in
moments of great suffering, the time is now to connect deeply to the experience of our very own lives.”
This fall, for the first time, we invite you into the hearts, spirits and experiences of a few of the people for whom
we have cared. At Hospice of the Good Shepherd, we are often rejuvenated by the clients and families we care
for, as they remind us that there is love and life, even in the presence of loss.

Old Age
Emily Hoberman
Nestled down
One hundred years behind her
A sympathetic chair
Hugging her close
The worn leather
Marks of forgotten days
A head’s indentation
Cradling Pop’s memories
A mere squint
Eyes fighting to stay open
Veins, like mountains
Atop limpid skin
Tremulous hands
Hands that once held lives
Retired wrinkles
Sleeping resting
Her words-Words that used to cure
Filled with emptiness
And profound confusion
Defeated by time
Not so endless anymore
The ticking clock
About to hit the final hour
Brave Bird
Robyn Nelson
Flying high,
no matter what,
happens to come up.
Overhead,
above the others,
where it could get lost.
She’s a brave little bird.
Out sick a lot,
miss some school,
all because I’m different.
But never mind it.
I’ve only got a week,
this Robyn’s flying on.
Flying south,
seems big you would think,
for just,
a little bird.
Sometimes,
just sometimes,
birds will think back,
and say,
“Hey, this isn’t so hard.”
This bird will get there.
Mixed emotions,
come up a lot,
like happiness and worries.
Happy that I’m almost there,
then there are,
those who worry.
Like Mom.
Like Dad.
Like Lee.
and like that bird,
who wrote a poem,
about her feelings,
for me.
Flying is hard,
but the flock,
will soon get there.
Worries will leave,
happiness arrives.
This Robyn is a Brave Bird.

you are the focus of attention
your words are frisky little animals
scampering around the dining room
your eyes shine and we cheer you on
for you, are our magic father
80 years young and still going strong
your stories, are now the stories of an old man
growing, expanding
they are pure wisdom disguised as bright tennis balls
and we bat them back and forth
laughing at our good fortune
that we have been given a lifetime
with this irresistible man

A Time to Rejoice? Managing the Holidays
From our Director of Counseling Services, Renee Goldstein Fixler, LICSW
A
s the holidays approach, social norms reinforce the notion that the holiday
season is a time to rejoice with family and friends. Yet, for those who have lost a
loved one, whether it be a spouse, partner, parent, sibling, child, or close friend,
the holidays can take on a very different meaning. This time of year may trigger
a variety of feelings and reactions that may be challenging and confusing to deal
with. There are ways in which to manage the holidays that allow grievers to experience the range of feelings that they have, as well as maintain the love and honor
they have for their loved ones.
If the loss is recent, you may still be in a state of confusion and shock, and be
focused on the practical issues of losing a loved one. The very thought of participating in the holidays may be daunting. Some may find surrounding themselves
with loved ones to be a comfort, even when the loss itself is all-encompassing
and overwhelming. Others may prefer to grieve more privately.
Whether you have lost a loved one two months, six months, two years, or twenty
years ago, the holidays can reawaken feelings that may have been dormant for
quite some time. Society tends to send a message that after a year, grieving
should be over. However, if someone has been significant to the very meaning
and existence in your life, there will be times when you may feel more sensitive
and need to reminisce about your loved one. Grieving is a healthy reaction to
dealing with loss.
It is quite common while grieving to have a sense of fear or dread of the holidays.
At times, the loss may feel like it happened yesterday. You may rehearse and
replay the last months, days, and hours of your loved one’s death. Feelings of
sadness, guilt, disconnectedness, love, relief, and anger are all normal. You may
also recall and relish the fond memories you shared with your loved one, or even
be angry that he/she is no longer on this earth. At these times, allowing yourself
to feel whatever arises is a way of honoring your loved one and respecting your
own needs.
There are strategies to deal with the holidays and the more you are attuned to
what helps you cope, the more empowered you will feel. This will not necessarily
take away how much you miss your loved one, but the strategies can help you to
manage the multitude of feelings and concrete issues that arise during this time.

This kind of self-care can pertain to both general grieving and issues specific to
the holidays.
COPING STRATEGIES FOR GRIEF DURING THE HOLIDAYS
• Consistent sleep patterns, good nutrition, exercise
• Talking with friends and family; sharing your story
• Prayer; attending religious functions
• Reading, observing nature, music, journal-writing
• Planning ahead (for the holidays); doing what feels right to you
• Starting new traditions (noting what makes the holidays
most meaningful for you, your family, and your loved one)
• Accepting invitations (to parties and functions); being mindful of your
emotions; what feels comfortable and manageable for you?
• Having an understanding of where you are; knowing that
there may be a range of emotions that arise during this time
If you find that you are feeling overly hopeless, excessively guilty, having ongoing
sleep disruption, or thoughts of wanting to hurt yourself, you may need to seek
professional help. There are therapists who specialize in this area that can be extremely helpful with understanding the issues specific to your grief. Bereavement
support groups are another avenue that many people find helpful. There is nothing like being able to share your experience with people who truly understand
what you are going through.
It is also normal to wonder if the intensity of your feelings will ever go away. How
will you ever be able to enjoy yourself again? Does moving on mean that you will
forget what your loved one meant to you? In the words of Helen Keller, “What we
have once enjoyed we can never lose; all that we have loved deeply becomes a
part of us.” The holidays can present an opportunity to explore what is valuable
to you and help you to redefine your life in the presence of your loss.
Circle of Caring at Hospice of the Good Shepherd offers a variety of support groups which are free of charge and open to the community. For more
information about our Community Support Groups, please call Christina at
617.969.6130 or email [email protected].
Spiritual Needs at the End of Life:
A Multi-Faith Panel Presentation
On Wednesday, December 3rd, Circle of Caring at Hospice of the
Good Shepherd will sponsor a multi-faith panel presentation on endof-life issues featuring representatives from the Jewish, Muslim, Protestant and Catholic faiths. The panel will be held at the Newton Free
Library from 7-9pm. CEU credits for nursing and social work will be
available. “Spiritual Needs at the End of Life” is being sponsored by
Sun Life Financial and is one of the many programs available through
the Hospice’s Center for Life Transitions. If you would like to attend
this event or if you are interested in more information call Jennifer at
617.969.6130 or email [email protected].
Annual Evening of Remembrance
On Thursday, November 13th, Circle of Caring at Hospice of the Good
Shepherd will host its Annual Evening of Remembrance at the Wellesley Community Center. The program will incorporate music, readings
and poetry into a moving service held to honor all the clients we have
cared for over past years and to remember with their loved ones. As
part of the evening we will acknowledge the names of clients who
died in the past program year. If you plan to attend and would like an
additional name acknowledged, you may let us know when you sign
in. Attendees are encouraged to bring photographs or other items
to display on a Remembrance Table. If you would like to attend this
event or if you are interested in more information call Christina at
617.969.6130 or email [email protected].

“Big Feat”: Big Fun
On September 14th, Circle of Caring at Hospice of the Good
Shepherd hosted its annual “Big Feat” Memorial Walk in Newton.
Though the pathways were damp and rain poured down only minutes before the Walk’s kick-off, Hospice staff, board members, volunteers and community members of all ages turned out to walk
in memory or in honor of loved ones. Following the Walk, participants enjoyed a picnic lunch donated by Whole Foods Market and
listened to the harmonic “Newton Love Tones” who sang songs
like “Lean on Me,” helping to raise awareness about end-of-life issues. Jordan Rich of WBZ Radio drew the raffle, awarding an array
of wonderful prizes donated by local restaurants and vendors.
This year, thanks to walkers, area business sponsors and those
who donated in honor or in memory of a loved one, $36,000 was
raised ~ more than in any other year! “The spirit one finds at the
“Big Feat” Memorial Walk is emblematic of the concern for others
that is evident every day here [at the Hospice] in the care that is
consistently provided to our clients and their families,” states Tim
Boon, Executive Director. The “Big Feat” Memorial Walk is held
annually in September.
Hospice: Living, Dying, or Both?
From our Medical Director, Gail Gazelle, MD, FACP, FAAHPM
W
hen you
hear the word
“hospice,”
do you think
about living or
do you think
about dying?
If you are like
most people,
the first thing
you think of
is death and
dying. And,
certainly, hospice is a service for people
who are in the final chapter of their life.
But does that mean that hospice is all
about dying?
As of the fall of 2008, we cannot change
the fact that there is no cure for the
advanced stages of cancer, congestive
heart failure, Alzheimer’s disease,
chronic lung disease, stroke, kidney
disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease and
many others. The thing that CAN be
changed is the manner in which this
critical period of people’s lives will be
spent. Although they can’t be cured,
people with advanced illnesses need
all the care they can get, and Americans
have expressed strong views about
what that care should focus on.
Numerous studies of seriously ill
individuals reveal that more than
fearing death itself, what people fear
is being a burden on loved ones, being
in pain or other physical suffering,
and losing their sense of dignity and
control. They fear prolongation of
the dying process, dying an overly
technologized death, and dying in
an unfamiliar environment. A 1998
Gallup poll revealed that almost 90%
of Americans want to die in their

own home. For people not enrolled
in hospice, less than 20% die in their
homes. All of the concerns Americans
raise are things that hospice addresses.
And, all of the staff at Circle of Caring
at Hospice of the Good Shepherd
address these issues as aggressively
as a cardiologist treats a heart attack
in a 45 year old.
It is normal to fear death. When I talk
to seriously ill people about hospice,
their initial response is fear. People who
are used to going back and forth to the
hospital may be particularly fearful that
enrolling in hospice somehow means
getting less care. I always acknowledge
their fears and reassure them that
hospice provides the highest level of
intensive caring for them and for their
loved ones. I tell them that I hope they
will live as long as they possibly can and
that all of life is for living. I explain that
more than being about dying, hospice
is also about living. It is about living
as well and as fully as you possibly
can, even when life has dealt you an
unfortunate hand of cards.

First Hospice in Massachusetts: A 30 Year Tradition of Caring
Notes from Executive Director , Tim Boon
Like any organization that survives as
long as this one has, Circle of Caring
at Hospice of the Good Shepherd
has experienced many changes. The
past two years have been especially
significant in this way. The regulatory
and competitive environments of
healthcare generally, and hospice
specifically, have been tightening,
and in order for HGS to remain
relevant, competitive, and viable, it
has had to change as well.
About two years ago, our Board of
Directors completed a process of strategic planning that identified
a multi-point plan for ensuring this organization’s continued ability
to provide its uniquely excellent level of care amidst the gathering
pressures of increased costs, increased regulatory scrutiny and
increased competition. Included in that plan were the following:
• The addition of a dedicated Medical Director certified
in Palliative Medicine
• The addition of a dedicated Spiritual Care Coordinator
• The creation of an agency web-site
• Improved partnerships with area hospitals
and nursing facilities
• The creation of our Center for Life Transitions
• Updated clinical information systems
As a result of that plan and its implementation, this past year has
been our busiest ever. In the past year HGS provided care to more
people than in any year in its long history – and not by a small
margin. In this past year there were over 40% more people admitted
to HGS than there were during the year that had previously been
our busiest ever.
These are very good things and, for me, they inspire confidence
in the organization and its Board of Directors. They tell me that
those charged with the responsibility of ensuring the future of
this hospice are taking that responsibility seriously, are forwardthinking, and are willing to do the work and make the decisions
necessary to continue the organization’s unique history of caring
and leadership in end-of-life care.
However, as I have noted often over the past year, the things that
make the Hospice of the Good Shepherd so precious are the many
ways it has not changed. Those things are most evident in the
relationships that exist between our staff and the people for whom
we care. It was true 30 years ago and it is still true today that you
will not find a more dedicated and caring group of professionals
than those at the Hospice of the Good Shepherd.
Another thing that has not changed and that makes this hospice
exceptional is its ownership. The Hospice of the Good Shepherd
is still the community-based, not-for-profit organization it was 30
years ago. While many other hospice programs are now owned
