Bulletin for February 21, 2016
FEBRUARY 21, 2016 WELCOME Westminster Presbyterian Church is a covenant family of believers called by God to fulfill His purposes here in Laurel, and as a staging ground for worldwide kingdom growth where we seek to live out the Gospel of Jesus Christ – to fill the earth with disciples, subdue it redemptively for God’s glory, and worship Him joyfully. We are being redeemed and equipped by the Spirit to build up one another until the Lord returns. ORDER FOR THE CELEBRATION OF PUBLIC WORSHIP AND HOLY COMMUNION FEBRUARY 21, 2016 * Congregation Standing WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP Mary Jo DeLaHunt, Harpist O Perfect Love RESPONSIVE CALL TO WORSHIP* Let us worship God. “He is our refuge and our fortress, our God, in whom we trust.” Let us confess with our mouths, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead. “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Let us call upon our true God, believing Him in our hearts, confessing Him with our mouths, worshiping Him in spirit and in truth. -based on Psalm 91:2; John 4:24; Romans 10:9, 13 INVOCATION AND HYMNS OF PRAISE* Come, Thou Almighty King Satisfied p. 2 p. 3 - !1 - COME, THOU ALMIGHTY KING - !2 - 44 œ 4. CORPORATE AND RESPONSIVE PROFESSION OF FAITH* I believe in God the Father Almighty; Maker of Heaven and Earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. -The Apostle’s Creed INTERCESSORY PRAYER Mr. Hardie Perritt HYMN OF FAITH Lift High the Cross p. 5 GIVING OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS - !4 - LIFT HIGH THE CROSS - !5 - OFFERTORY Lara Youngblood His Eye is on the Sparrow OFFERING PRAYER SPECIAL MUSIC Mary Jo DeLaHunt The Prayer SCRIPTURE LESSON Genesis 26:1-17 PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION AND CHANGE SERMON Rev. Mike Allen From Fig Leaves to Faith - Cat’s in the Cradle CORPORATE CONFESSION OF SIN Merciful Father, Your Son declares that we are blessed if we are persecuted for His sake. Forgive us for retreating from a hostile world that bullies us to keep quiet about the very best news. Pardon us for allowing the fear of others to dictate our decisions. Have mercy upon us for regarding rejection for righteousness as a burden to be borne, rather than an honor to be received. Send Your Spirit to renew us so that we might faithfully bear witness to the transforming power of the Gospel of Your Son, our Savior. For we pray in His blessed name, Amen. (Hear now our silent and individual prayers of confession) - !6 - ASSURANCE OF PARDON AND THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. AMEN. HOLY COMMUNION Minister: The peace of the Lord be with you! People: And also with you! Breaking of the Bread and Sharing of the Cup The center of each bread tray contains gluten-free bread. The outer rings of each cup tray contains wine, the inner rings contain juice. Elements will be served by the elders. Please hold the elements as they will be taken together after all are served. BENEDICTION & HYMN OF REFLECTION* Lift High the Cross Lift high the Cross, the love of Christ proclaim, till all the world adore His sacred name. For Thy best Cross which doth for all atone, Creation’s praises rise before Thy throne. Lift high the Cross, the love of Christ proclaim, till all the world adore His sacred name. - !7 - SERMON NOTES From Fig Leaves To Faith Cat’s In The Cradle Westminster Presbyterian Church February 21, 2016 Genesis 26:1-17 I. Allen - !8 - DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Monday/Tuesday Isaac was the ordinary son of an extraordinary father, and the ordinary father of an extraordinary son. He was someone like us. In his failure God was extraordinarily gracious to Isaac. How does God’s grace find you where you are and encourage you in your growth? Wednesday/Thursday The second point in the sermon was “the present may become like the past.” Think about ways in which generational sin has touched you and your family. Recommit yourself this day to end the cycle of sin so that you and your family might more fully enjoy the benefits of the Covenant of Grace. Recommit yourself to understanding the extent to which you are forgiven, and then bask in God’s grace and then live graciously. Friday/Saturday “Our future is not doomed by our past.” Spend some time today writing down examples of those in scripture who failed, but who also went on to do great things for Christ because of the power of the Cross. As Jesus gave Peter the opportunity to “undo” his denial by allowing him to profess his love for Jesus three times, think of ways in which Jesus has done the same thing for you. Grace makes every second a new second! - !9 - - ! 10 - MISSIONARY SPOTLIGHT - ! 11 - ANNOUNCEMENTS Sunday Evening Service begins at 6:00 PM.
