inside the rear discs.
Blue Print’s range of handbrake shoes now consists of 50
part numbers fitting approximately 250 applications.
Numerous new references have come into stock over
recent months, many of which are unique in the
aftermarket to Blue Print. Below are a few references that

Blue Print are pleased to announce the arrival of our short range of timing
chain kits for popular Nissan and Toyota applications.
The range initially comprises of five part numbers to fit 36 popular applications
where the timing chain has been deemed a common failing part and where we
have received requests for such a kit. The kits have been produced to offer
all the components normally required for this repair, including gaskets,
seals, chains, tensioners, chain guides, cam gears and crank gears
where relevant. The Toyota kits are available with or without
the VVT unit, which is also available separately.
This is a typical timing chain layout of a double overhead
cam engine, showing the components that you would
normally change during a timing chain replacement.
These include:
1. Timing Chain
2. Timing Chain Tensioner
3. Timing Chain Guides
4. Camshaft Gear
5. Crankshaft Gear

Is there a vehicle that you think we should be
supplying a timing chain kit for?
Do you often receive requests for a part that you
think should be in the Blue Print range? If so then
please let us know. We always act on good
information and many customer requests result in
Blue Print adding new parts to our range!
99.9% of modern engines have either a timing belt or timing chain
whose purpose is to keep both halves of the engine moving together.
Whilst timing belts have a set recommended service life, the timing chain
is just left to work away until it becomes excessively worn. The most
obvious indicator that the timing chain probably needs to be replaced
is a rattling noise from the front of the engine, with other symptoms
being reduced engine power, worsening fuel economy or an
intermittent misfire. Those who chose to ignore these signs and
keep driving, do so with quite a significant risk of it ending in tears.
The majority of modern cars have what are known as ‘interference’
engines. In an interference engine (one whose valves extend into
the path of the piston) failure of the timing chain invariably results
in costly and, in some cases, irreparable engine damage. Some
valves will be held open as the camshaft stops suddenly, and due to
the inertia of the crankshaft / flywheel the pistons will come up and
strike the valves causing catastrophic damage to the owner’s wallet!

Chrysler UK is the official importer of the American vehicle brands
Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge. As with many other vehicle
manufacturers at the moment, it’s reported that sales of the Chrysler
and Jeep marques dropped by about 35% in 2008, however Dodge
managed to buck the trend by showing a growth of over 20%!
The Dodge range of vehicles, officially
launched in the UK in 2006, is
regarded as the ‘value’ brand for the
Chrysler group, similar to Skoda for
the VW group.
The Dodge range consists of the Nitro
(a largish 4WD SUV), the Avenger
(a medium sized saloon), the Journey
(a new 7 seater MPV) and the Caliber
which is a hatchback / SUV crossover of
sorts, with all sharing a similar bold,
muscular, almost aggressive style.
The Caliber which we have focussed on
here is Dodge’s entry level vehicle, sold
with three engine variants - a 1.8 petrol,
2.0 petrol and a 2.0DT with sales split
21%, 36% and 43% respectively.
Whilst you may not see huge numbers
of these on the road there have been
6500 sold since its launch in 2006,
helped no doubt by the amusing
‘It’s anything but cute’ advertising
campaign. With only a small’ish main
dealer network and high OE prices,
Blue Print offers a significant
opportunity for you with parts for
Dodge and indeed all UK spec
American vehicles.
With a 20 year heritage
of product quality, an
excellent range of parts and a
fantastic three year unlimited
mileage warranty, Blue
Print offer the parts and
high ‘calibre’ service
that very few can ever
hope to match.

Most people probably think of idyllic holiday hotspots and spicy
food when they think of Malaysia; yet the country has also been a
significant producer and exporter of cars for many years.
Proton, who incidentally bought Group
Lotus PLC in 1997, have been building
cars since 1983 and selling in the UK
since 1989. Early models were largely
engineered around old Mitsubishi
models, but their current line up is
more modern and of higher standards
and quality than before. They even
took the Proton Impian touring car
racing for a couple of years with
reasonable success!
With Blue Print’s range of parts for
their range of three budget cars
(basically
re-badged/re-engineered
Daihatsu models) servicing and repairs
should remain in-expensive.
The other Malaysian marque to be sold
in the UK is Perodua, who proudly
claim to sell Britain’s least expensive car
to own and run… the £4400 Kelisa.

The Lotus Elise is a popular little sports car that was launched over a
decade ago and was instrumental in keeping the troubled car
company from collapsing.
It was a sales success from day one with
buyers paying over-the-odds to get to
the top of the waiting list for one. The
Mk1 Elise was replaced in 2000 by the
Mk2 whose shape still remains pretty
much the same some nine years on.
Up to 2004, the Elise was powered by
1.8 Rover K series engines (headgasket
anyone?!) with outputs varying from the
standard 118bhp to a very highly strung
190bhp. In 2004 Lotus started using the
Toyota 1.8 VVTLi engine out of the
Corolla / Celica T Sport models, and this
is the version you will find in the Blue
Print catalogue. (This was the second
Lotus to be catalogued by Blue Print, the
first being the Isuzu engined Elan of the
early 90’s).
With several thousand of these cars on
the UK’s roads it’s worth remembering
that, with Blue Print, you are able to
supply parts for this car without having
to go down the Lotus specialist route.
With Lotus dealers reasonably thin on the
ground, availability of their parts is not
quite in the same league as Blue Print,
and with our proven quality, service and
unrivalled Three Year Warranty there
are many reasons why Lotus owners
should be happy to have Blue Print parts
fitted to their cars!
Whilst ownership of any Lotus can bring
Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious,
Blue Print’s range of parts for the Toyota
engined models means fixing a Lotus will
be Elisey-peasey.

having to go

specialist route.”

In this section our Technical Support Controller, David Johnston (aka Jono),
shares with us some of his experiences on the Subaru Impreza Turbo clutch
and flywheel.
We’ve heard of a number of instances
from contacts within the trade where
a high performance car has a
replacement clutch fitted which then
fails prematurely. A common cause of
this is fitting the new clutch onto a
worn or damaged flywheel.
One such performance car that commonly
suffers from flywheel wear and damage is
the Subaru Impreza Turbo. With a grippy
4WD transmission, fast getaways from the
lights often require a fair bit of clutch
slipping which in turn generates a huge
amount of heat, eventually resulting in a
flywheel that’s seen better days! If the
vehicle is regularly driven in an
unsympathetic manner, the resulting heat
will cause the flywheel surface to become
heat damaged and the friction materials
to become burnt, causing them to wear
aggressively and fail prematurely.
When replacing the clutch assembly on
the Subaru Impreza 2.0 turbo models,
there is a high possibility that the flywheel
will have suffered irreparable heat damage
during its service life. A Subaru specialist
customer of ours said he never fits a new
clutch to an Impreza turbo without also
fitting a new flywheel, or skimming the
old one if it looks serviceable.
The fitment of a new clutch assembly to a
damaged flywheel surface will cause the
friction materials to fail prematurely and
reduce the service life of the replacement
clutch. This is not a fault of the clutch
components and therefore not something
that is covered by warranty. For this reason,
Blue Print recommends that the flywheel is
replaced (or professionally re-surfaced if
possible) during each repair to prolong the
replacement clutch service life.
