3
in unserem Zelt. Die Gruppen haben Zeit,
dass sie ihre Buden einrichten.
Dieses Jahr hat uns unsere Provinz wieder
zwei neue Vorschriften verordnet.
vorgesehen.
6. Okt. – 2 Uhr Nachmittag
7. Okt. – 10 Uhr Morgens
8. Okt. – 7 Uhr Abends
10. Okt. – 7 Uhr Abends
Für genaue Auskunft ruft bitte Krista im
Büro an.
15. Oktober im Kitchener Rathaus nicht. Die
Feier fängt um 5 Uhr Abends an.

President’s Report
First of all, my wife and I would like to
thank all the groups that invited us to their
picnics this summer. We had a wonderful
time and enjoyed the outings on our Farm
very much.
This year the Oktoberfest tent went up in
the middle of August, a reminder that the
summer is coming to an end and the preparations for our 46th Annual Oktoberfest
have begun. Hans Malthaner and his crew
are busy setting up the inside of the tent.
There will once again be no concert from
Oktoberfest Inc. in our Tent this year, instead there will only be a Trade Show prior
to Oktoberfest.
Our Provincial Government has come out
with two new regulations that we must
enforce for this year’s Oktoberfest.
Number 1: The first change addresses how
to deal with disabled persons. All volunteers and staff must attend a lecture given by
Krista in the Hall. If you do not attend one
of the sessions listed below and your name
is not on the list of those that have attended
the lecture, you cannot work in your groups’
booth. This session only takes about 30 minutes. Please attend.
We have 4 sessions scheduled.
October 6th at 2 pm.
October 7th at 10 am.
4
October 8th at 7pm.
October 9th at 7pm.
Hall at 5pm. Please come out and help us
celebrate.
Number 2: The second new regulation
requires that every volunteer and employee
must have WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous
Materials Information System) training. For
more information please contact Krista in
our office.
Please join us and celebrate the Concordia
Club’s 140th Birthday (Stiftungsfest) on
November 2nd.
We know it will be difficult for some groups
to have their out-of-town helpers attend
these lectures and training sessions, however we do appreciate everyone making the
effort to help us comply with the new regulations. I wish every group a prosperous,
successful and trouble free Oktoberfest.
Some reminders:
This years’ Pioneer Day celebration is on
Tuesday October 15th in the Kitchener City
5
On Sunday November 17th is Remembrance
Day at the Woodland Cemetery at 2pm, and
afterwards there will
be Coffee and Cake at CAMBRIDGE TRAVEL/MKI

Oktoberfest
As we all know
Oktoberfest is just
around the corner!
You can feel the
energy and anticipation from not
only the staff and
volunteers that are
working hard in
preparation
but
from our restaurant patrons as well! It is definitely the highlight of the year for the club! Year after year
I see so many familiar faces on the first
Friday night. The first Friday has been
labeled by many as “an annual reunion” of
friends and families coming together to
catch up on the events of the year and simply enjoy the Gemuetlichkeit of Oktoberfest!
Our family days, Sunday & Monday, have
always been very popular! These are the
days that members do not have to pay
admission to come and enjoy the afternoon
with their children and grandchildren!
Remember to bring your membership card.
Our part time staff during Oktoberfest will
have to see it to allow entry. Even though
the tent is not open during the day, on
Tuesday and Wednesday we are still working hard. Every year we have at least 7 or 8
full buses of seniors each day coming from
all over Ontario to experience Oktoberfest
during our Seniors Luncheon Program. A
great opportunity for out of town guests to
have great food, dance and enjoy the entertainment.
Wednesday evening is also a great evening
as Walter Ostanek will be joining the Black
Forest Band in the tent again for a great
show! Thursday evening is Corporate Night.
An evening that has regularly been a sold
out night as well.
On another note with regard to Oktoberfest...... please remember that if you are volunteering for any of the groups in the booths
for the week, we have scheduled a number
of A.O.D.A. Training sessions.
It is critical that everyone attend ONE of the
sessions!! Here are the dates and times:
Sunday, October 6 – 2:00p.m.
Monday, October 7 – 10:00a.m.
Tuesday, October 8 – 7:00p.m.
Thursday, October 10 – 7:00p.m.
These meetings will take no longer than ½
hour so please make sure you attend!
Stiftungsfest
The birthday celebration of the club will be
on Saturday, November 2, 2013 this year!
Tickets are selling very well. The cost per
member is $23.00 and the price for nonmembers is $40.00. A wonderful evening including wine, dinner, dancing to the music
provided by the Edelweiss Trio.
Kale Dinner
Chef Andreas will be preparing his traditional Kale Dinner again this November. A
delicious meal consisting of smoked
sausage & locally grown kale. It will be
available the week of November 19 to 23 –
weather permitting. Please read the November bulletin for updates.
I hope you all have a wonderful
Oktoberfest!
Sincerely,
Ruth Rajna

Seniorengruppe
Wir trafen uns wie immer am ersten
Mittwoch in der Woche in der Jaegerstube.
Anwesend waren 12 Mitglieder. Franz begrueeste unseren Gast Trudy.

so richtig angenehmes Sommerwetter.
November erinnern. Er findet um 5:30 in der Weinstube
statt. Wir fangen mit dem Abendessen an,
dann fahren mit der Versammlung fort.
Bis zum nächsten Mal,
Maria Grupp
TENNIS GOUP
On August 24th, our group met in Toronto
for a Mariposa dinner cruise. The weather
could not have been better: blue sunny sky,
slight breeze and no humidity. In other
words, perfect. Several of us met along
Queens Quay then made our way to the
docking site where at 6:30pm we boarded
the Mariposa Bell.
Naturally, we all started the evening with a
drink, while the ship slowly made its way
into the Toronto Harbour. We enjoyed a delicious meal, watching the Toronto skyline
pass by. After supper, a number of us ventured upstairs to the top deck to listen to the
music, dance or simply enjoy the setting
sun and the spectacular lights of the city
under a starry sky. It was a great evening
that went by much too fast.
With Oktoberfest only a month away, we are
now busy with those preparations: planning
the work schedule, setting up the booth and
any other details that need to be taken care
of before the festival begins.
A reminder that everyone has to attend a
special training as required by the the Ontario Disability Act. The dates are as follows:
October 6th at 7:00 pm, October 7th at 10:00
am, October 8th at 7pm and Thursday,
October 10th at 7pm. All session take place
in the main hall.
At the time of my writing, our September
social has yet to take place. I would like to
remind our members of our next social on
November 13th at 5:30 in the Weinstube.
We will commence with supper then proceed with our annual meeting.
Till the next time,

Hello to all of you,
on the 10. August we had our 4th Open Club
Tournament hosted by Concordia Club.
We had a nice coffee and chit chat together
and started a little late, our guest players
from South Africa had to find their way
first.
Around 10.20 am the tournament started in
which team Concordia once more, with a
sovereign performance, took first place.
Second place went to the team of the Bayern
Club and as third team came in the
Cambridge Club.
Again it was a Saturday well spend with
friends and sports comrades, a good day had
by all, I think the pictures speak for themselves, enjoy watching.
As a little reminder, our next tournament is
on Saturday the 14. September, 9.30 am, at
the lanes at Concordia Club in Kitchener,
everybody is welcome to join in as solo or
team.

Tischtennis Gruppe
Liebe Tischtennis-Freunde,
Also rein in die Lederhosen.
Klub teilnimmt.
Der Abbau unseres Oktoberfest-Standes
ist fuer den 20. Oktober um 9:30 Uhr
vorgesehen. Wie immer, jede Hand wird
gebraucht und ist willkommen.
Fuer unser „Ping-Pong“-Spiel an den
Familientagen benoetigen wir ein neues
Team. Unser erfolgreiches Damen-Team
vom letzten Jahr leidet heute noch unter
Muskelkater. Das staendige Aufheben der
Tennisbaelle vom Fussboden ist eine
nicht zu unterschaetzende sportliche
Leistung!

Wir hoffen, dass auch dieses Oktoberfest für
unseren Klub und fuer alle Gruppen wieder
ein erfolgreiches Jahresereignis sein wird.
TABLE TENNIS GROUP
Hello Friends,
The summer has been winding down for
this year. A good indicator is the Oktoberfest-Tent on our Club property. That calls for
the Dirndls and Lederhosen again.
On August 15th, 2013 our president Stefan
Babic called for a meeting which was held
in the Jaegerstube. The main topics we discussed revolved around the upcoming
Oktoberfest, the preparations and to set up
the work teams for our booth.
I sent you the minutes of this meeting per email.
Just to remind everybody on important
dates and events:
Every Group member working during
Oktoberfest has to attend one of the four
„AODA“-seminars scheduled shortly
before Oktoberfest. The exact dates you
can find and check in the minutes I sent
you per e-mail.
Furthermore it is required that at least one
member of the group’s work crew attends
the „Security-Night“ seminar on October
09, at the Club.
On October 20th, starting at 9:30 a.m. we
will take down and clean up our booth.
Everybody is needed and welcome.
We need a new team for our „ping-pong“
game on family weekend. Our very successful team from last year is still suffering from severe aching muscles. Picking
up the tennis balls from the floor is physically quite demanding.
Finaly we hope and wish that this
Oktoberfest will be as successful for our
Club and all other Groups as in previous years.
Until next time,
Eckhard Michalski

Deutsche Kultur
Vorsitzender des German Pioneers Day Komitees, gelesen.
In diesem Artikel gibt Herr Griebenow in
Trotz schwieriger Lebensumstaende in ihrer
statt. Das offizielle Programm beginnt um
17:00 Uhr.
In dieser Feier ehrt das Komitee die Unternehmer Ron Schlegel und Joerg Strieber
sowie die „Preston Scout House Bugle
Band“ fuer ihre verdienstvollen Beitraege
zur Wirtschaft und zu unserem Kulturerbe.
Wohl wissend, dass der 15. Oktober 2013 in
die Zeit des Oktoberfestes faellt und viele
von uns zeitlich sehr in Anspruch genom-
15
men sind, geht meine Bitte an alle Leser, an
dieser Veranstaltung teilzunehmen. Mit
ihrer Anwesenheit dokumentieren Sie ihre
Verbundenheit mit unserem kulturellem
Erbe und helfen, die 14-jaehrige Tradition
des „German Pioneers Day“ fortzufueren.

Treffpunkt
By now we should all be done with our
Oktoberfest set up, and getting ready for the
fun to begin!
Our August meeting was held at the
Schmidt residence with a BBQ pot luck dinner and some swimming and socializing
afterwards. And HAKO rides too! What a
fun change to our usual meetings. Vielen
Dank Herr und Frau Schmidt.
Our recent big event was our Cottage
Weekend, September 6-8. We rented the
Hamilton Germania Club’s Lodge on Lake
Dalrymple, near Orillia. The cottage was
more primitive than some, but very comfortable. As much food and drink as anyone
could ever ask for! We played some new
games as well as some old stand by’s. And of
course, LOTS of laughter! Thanks to those
that brought the new games, especially
‘Quelf’! And an even bigger Thank You to
the organizers!! A fantastically fun weekend
spent with friends.
Just before Oktoberfest – October 6 - we are
planning a Niagara 3-Wineries Bus Tour
with “Special Sightseeing Stop”. Updates
on all the fun will be in the next bulletin.
As in the past, the Treffpunkt members will
be celebrating Thanksgiving dinner with
friends after the traditional date, as we are
all too busy with Oktoberfest.
Please don’t forget to continue donating
blood with the Canadian Blood Services. It
is always needed. Please be sure to have
your donation logged as part of our Concordia Partners for Life number: CONC010846.
Wishing all groups a successful Oktoberfest!

Campers
As the camping season nears an end for
2013, we reflect upon the season behind us.
Farm clean up was very successful, with a
great turn out once again. Thanks to everyone that pitched in!
The Campers Spring Picnic and Soccer
Tournament was a success once again, and a
great time was had by all. Hopefully, we’ll
have more teams for next year!
We tried something new for the Canada Day
Weekend this year, and had events Friday,
Saturday, and Sunday. We didn’t have a
huge turnout for Karaoke on Friday, but
those in attendance had lots of fun, both
singing, and listening to Andrew’s antics as
host! Saturday’s volleyball tournament and
Fireworks display was once again enjoyed
by a large gathering. We boast the best fireworks display in Luxemburg! Sunday’s
Frühschoppen and Farm Olympics was a
fun day for everyone.
Our Summer Picnic and Bocce tournament
was fun for those attending, but unfortunately, it wasn’t attended well. We’re open
to ideas to make this event more attractive
for everyone.
Our final event of the season, in conjunction
with the Outdoor Group, is the Halloween
Party. I can’t report on that, as it happens
after the deadline for Nachrichten submissions, I’ll report the good news next month!
Overall, the Campers have made some great
contributions to The Farm this year. We
added additional fencing at the Pavilion,
making the licensed area much larger, and
able to accomodate our Bocce Tournament.
We also added solar lights to the fencing,
17
and it looks great after dark (too bad someone decided to liberate one of the lights).
Thanks to Gil and Harriet for contributing
some additional lights too!
We also rehabilitated one of the horseshoe
pits, giving us two pits to play on. Look for
a horseshoe tournament next year!!!
We had planned to put an additional fountain in the pond, but after doing more
research, we found that an aeration system
would be much better for controlling algae,
and increasing the health of the fish. That
was installed late in the summer, and since
it’s a biological process, results will take
some time. We anticipate the pond to be better than ever next year.
At our annual meeting, our elections were
held, and your 2014 committee is as follows:
Reiner Schulz – President
Bruce Emmerson
Kyla Pfister
Andrew Saur
Steve Zimmer
Michelle Zimmer
Tim Bews
Gil Beupre
Jesse Turner
Hannah Trautrim
Harold Kremkau

Oktoberfest is just around the corner, we’re
always in need of volunteers in the games
booth. If you would like to help out, send an

Wir hatten unsere Fahrt ins Blaue! Es war
fantastisch und ein sehr guter Tag. Wir gingen am Samstag, 14. September und es war
eine ganze Tagesreise. Danke für die Organisation! Die einzige Sache ist, dass ich
keine Ahnung habe, wohin wir fuhren,
waehrend ich das schreibe!
Unser Männerchor sang bei der Hochzeit
von Gisela Zander und Henry Von Schilling
am 7. September. Der Chor war erstaunlich
und das Brautpaar und die Gäste waren
begeistert.

September 14 and it was an all day trip.
Thank you for organizing! The only thing
is, though, I have no clue where we are
going as I’m writing this!
Our Male Choir sang at the wedding of

Concordia Garden Group
During September the Garden Group met at
Sheridan Nursery to see the fall ideas and
spring dreams. Hopefully next spring we
will see great results.
There is no meeting in October due to
Oktoberfest activities at the Concordia Club.
Our Picnic took place in August and it was
a beautiful day for it. The Silent Auction
had again many nice gifts, the chicken was
great and we had record number of kids for
the kids games. See the pictures of the awesome setup helpers and some of the children at the games.
Master Gardener, James Graham , will be
giving a presentation on November 13th
about “Growing Vegetables - Urban gardens,
small gardens and city plots”. There are a
number of spots in the region that offer
space for those not able to garden for vegetables in their own backyard or just run out
of space. Come out and find out about this
trend.
Upcoming is Oktoberfest and Winzerfest.
Don’t miss them!
Hope to see you November 13th at 7:30 in
the Jagerstube.
