Committee Commences Work on Future of Firehouse
By Alex Stavitsky-Zeineddin
A nine-member committee tasked with making a recommendation regarding the
future use and fate of the Kentlands Firehouse building (321 Firehouse Lane) started its
sessions on Monday, March 12th at the Kentlands Mansion. It will meet every Monday
for the next four weeks at 7:00 pm at the Kentlands Mansion.

Kentlands resident Robyn Renas and Kentlands Community Foundation Chair John
Schlichting were elected as co-chairs for the committee. The additional seven members
working together are also Kentlands residents. KCA Vice Chair Joyce Whitman, KCA
Secretary Sigrid McCutcheon, Michelle Clarke, Shahab Kaviani, Jennifer O’Brien,
and Kevin O’Brien were appointed by Mayor Sidney Katz and the Gaithersburg’s
City Council in February of this year. Joyce Whitman will serve as the KCA official
representative on the committee
Open to the public, these meetings include Deputy City Manager Tony Tomasello, the
City of Gaithersburg’s liaison. The committee’s task is to make recommendations that
will be included in a request for proposal (RFP) document, used to provide criteria for
bids. The recommendations made by this committee will be reviewed May 26th in a
Mayor and City Council session.
The committee will also be considering the fact that the Firehouse was recently
designated as a local historic resource. The City of Gaithersburg’s Historic District
Commission made this recommendation. They also recommended the demolition of
the adjacent garage.
There are many ideas as to what people could imagine there to be at 321 Firehouse
Lane. While Firehouse Committee Co-Chair Schlichting can imagine “a nice bed and
breakfast,” personally, Schlichting as KCF Chair, is advocating for the Firehouse to be
“used as an arts complex.”
Tomasello explained what it means when a building is named a local historic resource.
“The property was identified as property of cultural or historical significance. This
does not mean that the building can’t be demolished. If the building is rehabilitated,
though, the owner is then eligible for state historic tax credits.”
Jackie Krakovsky, a Quince Orchard Park resident, not on the committee, is interested
in renovating the Firehouse and making it into her residence and has sent a letter to
the City of Gaithersburg stating this request.

According to City of Gaithersburg records, the Firehouse building was built between
1942-1961and incorporated the remains of an older carriage house. Ottis Bell Kent,
the owner at the time, built the Firehouse to keep his fire engine collection and fullyequipped fire department. It also served as a housing for farm workers. The basement
was built as a fallout shelter in case of war.
Firehouse Co-Chair Robyn Renas, would love to see the Firehouse used as a residential
property, but said that enough parking is a problem. Renas does not think that an arts
complex could work for financial reasons but said that she is also open to all of the
ideas of the committee and is “excited that everyone is eager to contribute and that
there is a diverse group of people. This is refreshing.”
ICC Gets Mixed Reviews from Residents
By Kate Myers
Some love it, some never use it and some think it’s too expensive. It’s been nearly four
months since the main stretch of Maryland’s controversial Intercounty Connector (ICC)
opened—linking I-370 in Gaithersburg to Interstate 95—and reaction from Kentlands
residents is mixed. Considering it took the State decades of lobbying to push the $2.56
billion project through, that’s probably not the reaction the Maryland Transportation
Authority is looking for.

Gaithersburg, MD 20878
“I use the ICC for Ravens games and to see my family in Baltimore,” says resident
Kevin Fishkind. “I use it for business from time to time. It’s a great road with little
traffic. I love it during rush hour and it’s worth the money although the cost is high. On
weekends, late at night or early in the morning, I don’t think it saves enough time for
the money. My only wish is that it dropped you off further north on 95.”
Local real estate agent Meredith Fogle says the impact of the ICC on neighborhood
home sales remains to be seen. “So far the presence of the new ICC does not appear
to have directly affected home values in the neighborhood. Though relocating buyers
mention that the ICC presents more commuting options, whether the ICC will have
a direct impact on home values is somewhat unclear. The proximity of the new
highway, though, certainly adds to the many assets our community brings to the table
for potential buyers.”
Rob Myers says the ICC could be an even better commuting option if the speed limit
was raised. “There are hardly any cars on the ICC so you’re tempted to go a lot faster,
but the road is crawling with cops.” Rumor is that Maryland is considering raising the
speed limit on the ICC but that, just like the popularity of the road, remains to be seen.

By Alex Stavitsky-Zeineddin
Exploring nature, viewing different architecture, and meeting locals in different countries through hiking is a lifelong
passion for Kentlands resident Larry Dildine that he has passed along to his three sons.
Dildine grew up in Western Ohio where he walked the local paths on the flat, midwestern landscape. As an adult,
holidays and summer trips were spent hiking in various national parks in the United States and the Caribbean with his
three sons and wife, K.C.
Over the years, while he was a university economics professor, a professional at the US Treasury, and finally a partner
at PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Dildine traveled for work and always brought hiking boots with him so he could check out
the local surroundings.
Once he retired, Dildine decided to expand his explorations and take annual walking trips in Europe. Every year since,
in mid-April when local flora starts to bloom and the temperatures are milder, Dildine and his brother Dale take off
together for up to two weeks.
Dildine usually books these vacations through a British online travel company called Contours Walking Holidays,
http://www.contours.co.uk. The company organizes what they call self-guided walking tours, booking local bed and
breakfasts and overnight stays in local homes, making sure that one’s luggage gets to the next lodging place, while
providing local walking trail maps and set routes that average anywhere from 8-16 miles per day.
These trips have provided the Dildine brothers time together. They have walked in Wales, along the Cumbria walking
trail in England’s Lake District, in Ireland, in Dordogne in France, and in the Cotswalds in England. The brothers have
eight trips together under their belts and are planning their next one to the South Downs Way, a 100-mile National Trail
from Winchester to Eastbourne near the Channel Coast in the south of England, during the first week of May.
His brother, Dale is an avid hiker also and frequently hikes in the Great Smoky Mountains near his home in Lake
Junaluska, North Carolina near Asheville.
Dildine and his wife KC also love walking together and have taken a few trips themselves walking King Ludvig’s Way in
Bavaria, Germany and Cinque Terra in Italy.
Though they love traveling, the Dildine’s also love walking in the Kentlands and hike local trails in Montgomery County.
The ability to walk and be close to hiking spots was one of the main reasons they moved to the Kentlands from Chevy
Chase 14 years ago.
“There are so many great walks and hikes right around here,” said Dildine. Aside from the well-known areas such as
Sugar Loaf Mountain, Black Hills Regional Park, Seneca Creek Greenway, Black Rock Mill, and Clopper Lake, Dildine
Larry Dildine and his brother, Dale Dildine, at
West Highland Way in Scotland
recommended a newly established trail called
The Muddy Branch Greenway Trail that starts
in the Lakelands and goes for nine miles to the
Potomac River.
“Walking is the right speed. You see things that
you wouldn’t otherwise see. The challenge
depends on the path. Sometimes you may do 16
miles in a day with some climbs. It also is a great
way to meet the locals and get to know the local
culture,“ said Dildine.

Kentlands Chick-fil-A to Offer Free Meals for One Year to
First 100 Customers
How does free Chick-fil-A for one year sound? Good enough
to camp out in the Kentlands Square Shopping Center for 24
hours? On Wednesday, April 11 at 6 am, managers of the new
Chick-fil-A located at 104 Main Street in the Kentlands will distribute free meal cards to the first 100 customers in line (if more than
100 people are present, spots will be awarded via a raffle system). The lucky 100, plus ten alternates, will then be invited to camp
out until 6 am on Thursday, April 12, when the restaurant officially opens. Campers must stay in line the full 24 hours to claim their
prize (brief restroom breaks are allowed).
Grand prize winners will receive one Chick-fil-A meal (Chicken Sandwich, Chick-fil-A Waffle Potato Fries and drink) per week for
a year. The company’s “First 100” promotions typically draw hundreds of customers; some Chick-fil-A fans have been known to
travel from state to state to camp out for free meal cards.
Participants must be 18 years of age or older and present a valid photo ID. Chick-fil-A recommends participants arrive no earlier
than 5:30 am on Wednesday. For more information about the First 100 promotion, visit www.chick-fil-a.com/Locations/First-100.
Star Diner Celebrates 12th Anniversary With New and Exciting Menu Selections
March 18th marked 12 years since Marty and Sharon Kobrin opened the doors of the Star Diner in Kentlands. To celebrate this
landmark, they have added new entries to their menu that will be sure to please all palates. For those looking for healthy choices,
they recommend their flounder francaise, vegetable lasagna, or salmon filet sandwich. Vegans will appreciate the new portobello
mushroom sandwich with spinach. Traditional favorites like chicken pot pie, yankee pot roast, and corned beef hash and eggs are
are always on the menu.
In April, the Star Diner will launch its new website, www.StarDinerKentlands.com as well as offer “2 for $20” entries with several
options from which to choose. And the Live Summer Concert series will be back again this year, starting on June 1. It will run every
Friday and Saturday night through the end of September from 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm with new acts as well as old favorites.
Marty and Sharon want to thank all their Kentlands customers for a great 12 years. Here’s to lots more!

Andréana E. Lefton recently completed her MSc in Philosophy and
Public Policy with Distinction at the London School of Economics (LSE). Her MSc Dissertation was titled, “The Untold People:
Narrative Exclusion and Gypsy Literacy in the UK.” She is a 2010
summa cum laude graduate of American University and a Phi Beta
Kappa scholar.
Have you heard of the “broken glass
syndrome”? Walking along Kentlands
Boulevard recently brought
this to mind. It appears that one pile of
dog poop begets another
and another thus, perpetuating bad behavior
of dog owners in the area.
Because we are a walkable neighborhood bordering the Kentlands Downtown
Shops and Restaurants, this area is our first impression. Walking past the Kentlands
Manor apartments, it appears that dog owners don’t care at all. I’m sure the dogs
themselves have to do some fancy stepping to avoid the countless piles of dog
excrement. This is not healthy for you or your dog when they track this on their
paws into your home.
Ms. Lefton has been pursuing a career as a writer and poet and
recently received an honorable mention in The Atlantic’s Student
Writers contest. She was also a 2010 finalist/winner of the Elie Wiesel prize in Ethics (2010 and was named a ‘commended finalist’ in the London School
of Economics Bernard Levin Journalism Prize.
Being a part of the Go Green Group in the Kentlands, I’m tasked with
recommending areas of priority for the Spring Earth Day Cleanup, but would
not even think of asking our volunteers to navigate the disgusting piles that are
left there by irresponsible dog owners. There’s no excuse when you have trash
receptacles at the corner at the bus stops.
Alexa Palman, a senior at East Carolina University, has been named to the Chancellor’s

semester in elementary schools in North Carolina. Her parents, Kentlands residents Glen

upcoming graduation by jetting to the Atlantis

Please help to keep the Kentlands beautiful and take pride in our neighborhood
and walkable areas. Take a bag with you to clean up after your furry friends … do
your part and others will follow your lead.

Committee Commences Work on Future of Firehouse Continued from Page 1........
The next Firehouse meeting, slated for Monday, March 19th at 7:00 pm, is open to
the public and will be a brain storming session according to Co-Chair Shlichting,
“The idea is that all committee members come with a list of comprehensible and
acceptable uses for the Firehouse, with the pros and cons for each use, as well as
what uses would not be acceptable,” said Schlichting. The meetings will start with a
few minutes dedicated to public comments.
My husband’s 93 year old father, lives in Kentlands Manor. He just moved here in September from Brooklyn, NY where he has lived his whole life. The one thing he loved
about Brooklyn was having a nice community of people who cared about each other.
Deputy City Manager Tony Tomasello also looks forward to meeting with the
Kentlands Firehouse committee members. “All ideas are possible for the Firehouse
and that there is no need to be tied to conventional thinking. There is a wide
spectrum of possibilities for this lot. This is a highly functioning committee and there
will be a lot of good ideas coming out of it.”
Dad has a motorized scooter and loves to play his lotto numbers most days at the wine
and beer store across from Kentlands Manor. In January, he was on his way to the store,
misjudged the curb and toppled over in his scooter coming down on his head and
face. Even though Dad did not want to bother us, I received a call from Vivian Stevens
at Kentlands Manor. My husband went straight over to the Kentlands to find a woman
from the neighborhood who was a nurse sitting with his father. She wanted to stay with
him until someone came.
I was told that when he fell, people in cars stopped, people walking came over and an
EMT was on the scene. He refused to go to the hospital but insisted he had to play his
numbers first before going back to his apartment. My husband took him to the ER at
Shady Grove Hospital where he stayed for two days. When Dad arrived back home to
Kentlands Manor, there were heart shaped cut-out notes from people who had helped
him and messages on his phone.

2012 Facilities Pass Updates Updating facilities passes for 2012 has begun. Please come by the Clubhouse
to update your Facilities Passes and sign for your Guest Pass prior to the pool
opening on Saturday, May 26. Passes will not be updated on Memorial Day.
Just a few guidelines on updating passes: •
Avoid long lines when the pool opens by updating your passes during
business hours as soon as possible.
•
There will be four days of extended hours (see below) for you to update
your pass(es). If you cannot update your pass during regular or extended
hours, you may drop your pass(es) off at the Clubhouse for updating the next
business day. •
Please do not discard your old passes. If you have discarded them or have
lost your pass(es), there is a $5 replacement fee for each one. •
Please bring passes for your whole family to the Clubhouse at one time to
have them updated.
•
Guest Passes can only be picked up by the Titleholder. •
You will be asked to provide contact information in case of an emergency.
•
Passes will not be issued to delinquent Titleholders/households so please
make sure that your KCA assessment payments are up-to-date. •
Remember that Facilities Passes are required for entrance to the Clubhouse
and all recreational areas at all times! Each year the members of the Board of Trustees meet after the election and appoint
officers. The current Board has appointed me as the KCA Treasurer.
The Budget and Finance Committee, made up of appointed Kentlands citizens, works
hard throughout the year reviewing the financial status of the community so that a
meaningful budget can be prepared for the Board of Trustees. Like any budget, it is
based upon experience, estimates, special projects, needed maintenance, and a few
educated guesses. For instance, who knows in advance how much it will snow?
One of my goals as the KCA Treasurer is to try to keep costs within the budget, or
below budget, in each category. We live on a basically fixed income. If we stay under
budget in the designated areas, then we will not need to increase assessments except
to keep pace with budgeted needs and inflation.
I welcome the suggestions of anyone and everyone on how we can work to make
Kentlands the successful community which we all enjoy.
2012 Kentlands Telephone Directory & Information Guide
Due to several errors and discrepancies discovered in the recently published Kentlands directory, the decision has been made to republish the directory. In order to
ensure accuracy for this revised version, a letter will be sent to all residents via the US

--Enrollment of condo residents in KCA website, e-mail list
--Communication about KCA committee openings
--Creating condo web pages on KCA web site
--Quarterly KCA board meeting with condo boards
--KCA liaisons to condo boards
The KCA Board was involved in a couple of important community meetings in
February of which everyone should be aware. The first was the town hall meeting
hosted by the KDP which was held on February 15th to discuss safety and security
matters in connection with the two armed robberies that had just occurred in the
Kentlands downtown area. Since that meeting was covered in several local papers
including the Town Crier, and a suspect has recently been arrested in the case [thanks
to the Gaithersburg Police Department for their hard work here], I don’t think further
discussion is required in this forum. Although more parochial in nature, the second
meeting was also focused on an important issue in our community. Consequently, I
would like to discuss it here.
Activities/Facilities
--Increased happy hours
--Construction of tot lot in Chevy Chase/Kentlands Bluffs area
--Landscaping of KCA property near Copperfield I and II, Kentlands View and Kentlands
Bluffs areas
Advocacy
--KCA support for Kentlands Bluffs concerns re: Corridor Cities Transitway grade
On February 16th, the KCA Board held an outreach meeting with representatives of the
various condominium associations within the Kentlands. I proposed this session to
my fellow Board members because of an impression, borne of several conversations
with residents across the past several months, that many of KCA condo residents feel
separated from the rest of the community, and in some cases have specific concerns
that have not been adequately aired or addressed. The Board viewed my suggestion
very positively, and so the meeting was planned and held.
--KCA support for Copperfield I and II concerns re: building renumbering
Financial
--Consolidation of snow removal and garbage contracts to achieve savings
As you can see, there were a lot of important issues raised during this discussion!
The meeting was attended by about 25 people, including KCA Board members, our
community general manager, members of the various KCA condo boards, and other
interested condo residents. I think that everyone who attended was inspired by the
cordial, earnest atmosphere of the meeting. There was a lot of passion in the room
about the Kentlands and about finding ways to increase the involvement of the condos
and their residents in KCA activities. That said, the attendees voiced a number of
important concerns. A summary of these issues appears below:
KCA Communication/Participation
The KCA Board and President will be discussing the “punch list” of KCA-condo
improvement opportunities at our upcoming meetings, and we expect to make
significant progress against them across the remainder of this year.
Overall, the meeting reinforced for me that the condominium associations and
their constituent titleholders represent a critical part of the unique character of
the Kentlands. The KCA Board and President are committed to ensuring that these
residents fully enjoy the responsibilities, privileges and sense of community associated
with Kentlands citizenship. We invite all citizens—regardless of where you live!—to
support us in this effort.
--Distribution of Kentlands Express, meeting minutes to condo residents
--Announcements/publicity re: KCA events via condo bulletin boards
preparing a draft of the annual audit which will be reviewed by both the Budget and
Finance Advisory Committee and the KCA Board of Trustees. Once any recommended
changes are considered by the auditor, they will then issue a final audit.
Many of you are in the process of completing a Visual Change Application so that you
may begin making home improvements. The Town Architect is available to meet with
prospective applicants on the second Wednesday of the month from 5:30 pm to 6:30
pm at their office located at 320 Firehouse Lane. These meetings are by appointment
only, with twenty minutes allotted per household. This service will assist you with
input on your design and the materials allowed in the KCA design standards.
Daylight Savings Time brings extended daylight hours that everyone enjoys this time of
year. With that it’s also mindful for us to remember that many residents are taking that
early morning walk or run through the community before the later sunrise, so we ask
that everyone continues to use extreme caution in those early morning hours. If you’re
one of those taking the opportunity to begin your day with outside exercise, we want
to remind you to wear some type of reflective clothing so that motorists can see you.
Safety is of the utmost concern at all times.
Thank you to the Garden Club for donating two benches that are being installed
in the front of the Clubhouse. Many times senior adults or children are waiting for
transportation and now those residents will have a place to sit.
The Board approved the selection of an asphalt engineering firm at the February 22,
2012 Board meeting. The firm will be tasked with evaluating the asphalt conditions
in the alleys, at the Clubhouse, and an area behind the live-work units on Main Street.
They will perform a visual assessment of each of the 41 asphalt pavement areas and
document existing conditions, including type, severity and quantity of major distresses.
They will provide the Board a written report outlining repair recommendations. The
engineering firm will also obtain asphalt cores at different locations to determine the
pavement and sub-base thickness. Additionally, they prepare design and construction
documents for the bidding process. Their services will continue through the bidding
phase and the administration of the contract. Once repairs begin, the engineering firm
will observe the progress of the work and will verify that work is being completed in
accordance with the contract specifications. This entire process will divided into four
phases with approximately twenty-five percent of the work to be completed during
each phase.

Citizen Participation Encouraged in Public Safety Initiatives
Two-way communication between the Gaithersburg Police Department and the
public is critical to the success of public safety initiatives in our community. Citizens
sometimes fail to call the police because they feel the information is not relevant or
seems trivial. However, this type of information is important to help identify trends
and can sometimes lead to solving a crime. Every set of eyes on the street is valuable.
The meeting was called to order at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at the
Kentlands Clubhouse and the following six (6) applications were reviewed:

white wood posts. The Gaithersburg Police Department encourages the public to call 9-1-1 in emergency
situations, or to report non-emergency activities and information to 301-279-8000.
Equally important is the dissemination of information to the public. Through press
releases, online crime report summaries, and emergency messaging, the Gaithersburg
Police Department ensures that the community is made aware of public safety issues
on a timely basis.
Lawrence & Caroline Luteran, #12-634

police activity impacting the delivery of municipal services or where surrounding
citizens may be at risk, and extreme weather situations such as snow emergencies,
flood and tornado watches. Text messaging fees may apply depending on the user’s

Kentlands Yoga Studio a Dream Come True
By Alex Stavitsky-Zeineddin
Sabina Grewal picked Kentlands Downtown last September to open up her own yoga
place, Yoga Bliss Studios, a long time dream come true. The new yoga studio at 404
Main Street, 2nd floor, offers a variety of Hatha and Vinyasa yoga classes for adults and
children, as well as yoga workshops.
“I chose the Kentlands because I wanted a community to grow my yoga practice in,”
said Ms. Grewal.
Grewal’s family has been instrumental in helping her open up the Yoga Bliss Studio.
Her parents helped with the capital to start her business. Her brother, Josh Been, a
contractor, installed new wood and tile floors and helped paint the Yoga Bliss space.
A business graduate with a major in Finance and minor in Asian Studies from The
College of William and Mary, Ms. Grewal was moved to study yoga after spending
some time working in finance in Gaithersburg. Ms. Grewal then moved to Seattle
Washington to study holistic medicine and yoga. There, she discovered Hatha Yoga, a
15th century practice started in India by Swami Swatamarama. The premise of Hatha
yoga is to have union between the body, mind and spirit through a series of physical
postures or asanas.

Kentlands Arts Barn Houses Area’s Best-Kept Shopping Secret
By Kate Myers
The Kentlands Arts Barn is known for its shows, film series and art classes. But for the
past ten years—as long as the Arts Barn itself has been in existence—it has also quietly
operated a gift shop, featuring handmade, juried selections from local artists. “It’s one
of the area’s best-kept secrets,” says Arts Barn volunteer and Kentlands resident Karen
Gallant. “A lot of people know about the Arts Barn of course, but they don’t realize we
have a gift shop too.”
The City Art Shop includes a rotating selection of jewelry, pottery, fused glass frames
and bowls, note cards, wooden jewelry boxes, stained glass, quilts, scarves and more.
“Just the other day a man was here for an event and he ended up buying a pair of
earrings for his wife for Valentine’s Day,” says Gallant. “It’s a great place to find a
unique gift. We’ll also gift wrap your purchase.”
The shop used to be located in a studio in the Arts Barn but was relocated to the entrance
area when that space was needed for classes. Inventory changes seasonally, and artists
who wish to have their items considered for sale must complete an application, pay a
fee, and present samples of their work to a juried committee.
Andi Rosati, the Community Facility Director for the Arts Barn, said that plans are
underway for an event which will be held later this year to celebrate the Arts Barn’s
10th anniversary.
“I immersed myself in yoga and the Hindu
ritualistic offerings and then brought all
this experience back here” says Grewal.
She is currently certified in children’s
yoga, Hatha yoga and Power Vinyasa
yoga, a newer style of yoga that, according
to Grewal, is “ focused on creating inner
heat with emphasis on the breath and is
considered a vigorous practice. “
Grewal provides a variety of yoga classes,
but also has decided to focus offering
children’s classes because she believes
that yoga provides “a way for kids to
focus their energy in yoga poses, a way to
calm with breathing, and a way to use up
excess energy.”
Items range in price from $3 to $100 or more with most items falling within the $15 to
$35 range. For a limited time an artist in residence is even accepting commissions for
custom quilts. The shop is open Monday through Friday from 10 am to 5 pm, Saturday
from 1:30 pm to 5:30 pm, and during theater productions, concerts and special events.
The shop accepts all major credit cards. To learn more, call 301-258-6394.
From Seattle Wash., where she earned her
first yoga teacher training certificate, Ms.
Grewal studied in Bali for a year to deepen
her yoga practice. Returning from Bali in
2006, Grewal started teaching yoga at
various DC metro studios as well as at
George Washington University, where
she is still a yoga teacher and Professor.
Her goals for Yoga Bliss Studios are
to “build the practice of yoga in this
community and bring the community
together to share the practice together. “

2012 Boys & Girls Kentland’s Tennis/Basketball Day Camp
Now in its 15th year, The Kentland’s Tennis/Basketball Camp is a carefully designed
and integrated approach to the total game of tennis and basketball. Camp begins with
the teaching of the basics of both sports. Camp Director, Marna Katzel is a certified
Level 1 United States Professional Teaching Association member and her associated
counselors are local high school and college level tournament tennis players. Basketball
instruction is from HoopEd, the supplier of certified instructors to well- known camps,
such as Gary Williams and Morgan Wooten.
Students, aged 7-14 years, attending the camp will be challenged and motivated
in a fun environment. Our goal is for all campers to leave camp with new friends,
good memories, and to attain a greater self-confidence and enthusiasm for tennis
and basketball. Each camper is evaluated to his/her skill level to ensure the proper
grouping of students.
The Tennis/Basketball Camp will introduce a “Stroke of the Day” for tennis players
and intensive instruction in skill refinement through passing, shooting, dribbling,
rebounding, and defensive skill drills for basketball players. Team competition will be
incorporated into the daily schedule for both sports with emphasis on improving skills,
sportsmanship, leadership, and effort.

“Gently Used” Tennis Balls Needed
Marna Katzel is looking for donations of semi-decent used tennis balls for our tennis
ball machine. Using brand new tennis balls is not recommended, as the wax on the
ball is known to "gunk" up the internal mechanisms of the machine. Many of you like
to start your matches with fresh tennis balls and tend to collect your old match balls
putting them aside. It would be a great benefit to all of the tennis ball machine users
if there could be a reserved supply of used tennis balls for our machine. Please stop
by Marna’s teaching court to drop them off or leave them in a bag at the clubhouse
labeled "for tennis ball machine.”

Kentlands Artist Wins State Award for His Drawing
By Christian Miller
Kentlands is home to people of many different talents. Preston Douglas, a 16 year old
junior at Quince Orchard High School, is a perfect example. Last school year Preston
drew a picture of me in one of his art classes. It was entered in the art show and ended
up winning. The same piece was entered in a Maryland state arts competition and took
home the first place prize.
When Preston was younger he wasn’t too interested in drawing, but was very skilled
at it. He became interested when he realized he could make people happy with his
drawings. “The show Dragon Ball-Z from Cartoon Network got me into drawing as my
older brothers loved the show. So I’d always draw pictures for them of their favorite
characters. They loved them! It made me realize I could actually make people happy
with my drawings, which is why I wanted to continue getting better at drawing so I
could make people hopefully even happier.” Douglas said.
As Preston has gotten older he’s realized there’s more to drawing than just Dragon
Ball-Z characters. Today he focuses mainly on drawing portraits and pieces of realism.
As a junior in high school, Preston continues to further his skills by taking multiple
art classes that the school offers. “I’m taking Studio Art which is a class where I can
just draw what I want with few guidelines. I also take Advanced Digital Art where we
create graphics and drawings using the computer and electronic tablets. The last art
class is AP Art History, which is a college level course. This isn’t a class where I really
get to perform art, but it’s a way I can learn the building blocks or stepping stones of
art by looking at pieces from early artists and by studying their many different styles
and how they’ve changed over time.” Douglas said.
Preston Douglas stands in front of the drawing of his friend, Christian Miller, for which
he won first prize in a Maryland state arts competition.
Preston’s art varies in all sorts of different media. He works with clay, pens, pencils, markers,
paint, and chalk, just about anything he can get his hands on. Although he’s very talented with so many of these mediums, his favorite is the pen. Drawing in pen is a very
difficult task because there is no room for error. One mistake and the piece is potentially ruined. That’s the reason why Preston loves the pen though. “Pen looks cleaner than
pencil and the ink creates a deeper value in the drawing then graphite would. It shows the care and time you put into your work and the little room for error is a fun challenge,”
says Douglas.
Drawing isn’t just a fun hobby for Preston. He plans to go to college to study graphic design and other arts-related courses. He aspires to one day work in animation or graphic
design after college, and if worse comes to worst, he wants to sell his pieces in Art Galleries and simply live off of doing something he loves.
I personally own many pieces of Preston’s work and love every single one of them. Every piece is more amazing than the last and I cannot wait to see more from him in the
future.
Editor’s Note: Christian Miller is a Kentlands resident, a junior at Quince Orchard High School, and works part-time at the Kentlands Clubhouse on evenings and weekends
at the reception desk. Although he has written for school newspapers, this is his first article for the Town Crier. We are happy to include Christian’s work and look forward to
more of his articles in future issues.
