Construction in the final tum made forsome exciring racing on the usually tame .
Bethesda, MD course. The normally wide
course narrowed down to less than one lane
of tr~c, over what resembled the lunar
surface. Riders in the back of every field
were forced to come nearly to a halt, and
then sprint out of the turn to catch back on.
Although a fair bit of grumbling about the
course conditions was overheard, it wouldn't
be the IBM race without some obstruction.
This year's last turn stands proudly next to
the giant sinkhole of last year in collection
of obstructions that make the course what it
is.
In the senior U2/3 race the winning
breakaway of Skip Foley, Jon Wirsing, and
Zach Browne formed early in the race, but
the field was detemuned not to let the three
strong men ride away. Lap after lap the field
came though the start-finish in neazly single

file, but they could not pull the trio back.
Late in the race,a group of four detached
itself from the field and began to hunt the
leaders down. With several laps to go, it
looked as if they might catch, the gap having
fallen to less than 20 seconds, but the leaders
woke up and put the hammer down again.:In
the sprint, Skip Foley led it out from the last
bend in the road and pulled away from the
others for another in his string of victories at
the IBM course.

Race Reports from April
Ironman John Epting was amazed to
see in Velo Voice that on April 2nd:at the +
New Kent Rough Ride the 40/50+ old men
rode 48 miles 7:00 minutes faster the 4/5
youngsters. He then reports that one of the
better moments of the Tour De Moore Road
Race was the sight of a teammate(who forgot his shorts in SS) wearing the skinsuit of
a local all female racing team with the top:
folded into the shorts. After the race the unnamed racer told him,"The chamois felt
Si'~t"
Race winner and former NCVCer Paul
"the Animal" Pearson remarked to TD Mike
that while he was off alone, soft-pedaling
and wondering if anyone would join him, as
he was not really in the mood to do it alone,
he saw our guy, John E. coming out of the
field with the right wheels, position, and
speed. He said to himself,"This is the guy to
be with." Paul also noted that he had to slow
John down a couple of times -the pace was
possibly inducing flashbacks from his pro
days - as John rode like a man on a mission.
On April lst at Charles City Road Race
in Va, the Cat N race had a rolling start and
Peter Reynolds moved to the front and
whipped up the pace a bit,just really.trying
to warm up. Several guys came through,
hazd. He looked back, and saw that there
was a gap between the break of ten and the
pack, with the race only a mile old. By the
second lap, the break was down to seven,.
with-Dave Goodwin, Rob Lee, and Jeff
blocking.. The break was flying, and Pete
was the driver: On lap four the pace had reduced the break from seven to five, and one
lap later another escapee went back to the
field. On the last lap Peter, obviously feeling
good,,attacked three times, attempting to do
it all alone, but couldn't. On the finish
stretch, the four came in and,"I did a classic
Cat V move," lamented Peter. "I was Number two in line as we approached the 200 meter mark..The winner jumped around me and
I couldn't hold his wheel but passed the guy
that lead the line in, but was pipped at the
line and finished 3rd."
April. 8, Fredericksburg Virginia was :.
the site of the.Pear Blossom Criterium. In
the Cat N race Peter Reynolds' aggressive
attack from the line ground the field down to
about 20 riders in the first two laps. With
strong encouragement from Bruce O -the
club's racing captain -and the masters team.

An Apology
First off, I want to apologize.for the extreme delay in getting this month's newsletter out. In the time between beginning and
finishing, it's become next month's newsletter. My duties as District 20 BAR coordinatorhave taken much more time than I ever
imagined they would. I made the decision to
get caught up on that, and the newsletter
suffered. I hope I can balance the two for the
rest of the season.
To fill space this month, I've included a
little story of my ride of the month from
April, at the Pear Blossom Festival Criterium. Ihope that we can make this a
monthly event for "Ride of the Month" winners. Come on--you did the great ride, now
tell everyone about it! Of course, I'd rather
have you mail me a disk, but for this, I'll
take plain-old paper--crayons if that's all you
can muster.
While we aze on the subject of reports
from races, I want to encourage all of you to

submit those gripping race reports to TD
Buller every month. I like reading about
them, that's for sure. I thank all of you who
have submitted articles over the past couple
years.
I hope that I can get some feedback
from more of you about the newsletter. I get
some, but it's usually from the same group
of people Are there things you'd like to see
in the newsletter? What about stuff you
never read? Perhaps the question that most
interests me is: do you actually read the

'The tight final turn split the Master's
field as well, with a small group escaping
early. In the waning laps of the race Gus
Ferrario (Snow Valley) and John Epting
(NCVC)launched from the field and clawed
their way up the front, making contact with
only two laps to go. The two managed 4th
and 5th, obviously not too exhausted from
their long chase. Gary Anger(NCVC)won
the sprint going away from the small group
of escapees.

The day started off sunny with the
temperature in the low 80's, but the clouds
rolled in by mid afternoon. Luckily, the rain
held off until after the racing finished. The
racing was fast as the small hills on the back
of the course did not seem to be as big a
factor as originally anticipated.

Saw It... continued from page 1
tacked on every lap at the top of the hill. It
finally paid off when a group of eight riders
formed. Adam Coon missed the split, but
Rick Cotton did make the group. Reynolds
kept hammering and frequenfly dangled off
the front, somefimes with Cotton and sometimes with the winner of the Peninsula Trust
Bank race the weekend before. The headwind on the back stretch slowed them down
somewhat. Peter started the last lap the way
he started the first lap, attacking and by the
second turn, he was clear. Pushing with all
he was worth on the back stretch, tasting a
solo victory, he was unaware of the furious
chase behind him. A group of five caught
him in the middle of the hill, as he labored
up the incline undergeared. Around the last
corner, Bruce yelled at him like a drill sergeant to "put it in the big gear and sprint"
Heeding these wise words, he did and took
third.
Apri19 The race was billed "CedarvilleRoubaix" and it was a windfall for the local
bicycle shops, as it took its toll on tyres. The
race blew apart instantly on the first dirt
section, which had many guys walking or
riding slower than walking. Dave Goodwin
was the only NCVC finisher in the Cat N
race, placing 11th. Peter Reynolds appeazed
to be doing well and might have held on for
another top three finish when he fell victim
to a double flat on the fourth lap. In the
1/2/3 race both Bill Luecke and Scott Ramsey suffered "biomechanicals," but Tom
Snyder hung on gamely to furish 17th.
Apri123rd, at the Columbia Spring
Classic, was a great day for Peter Reynolds
and the NCVC Cat N team. The Cat N race
started pretty fast, with Peter contributing by
pushing the pace. As planned the guys
stayed close to each other, counterattacked,
and looked very formidable. After the first
prime, Peter attacked and Rick Cotton
joined, and the pair stayed away for a couple
of laps. At the next two primes they repeated
this act but the wind and pack size made it
tough to stay away, so on the last prime, Peter dropped back and blocked. Rick managed
to stay away for 41aps with a small group,
before the field reeled them in. The last two
laps were pretty fast, with a final lap crash
on the back stretch hill exciting the pack, but
Peter remained calm away from the melee.
Around the top of the course the pack was
flying and, as planned with race captain
Bruce Oliver, he was moving up the right
curb, thinking he was towing Dave Goodwin, who was actually boxed in. Rob Lee
was to the left. On the run in, two columns
formed, and a second crash occurred in the
left column. Fortunately, Pete and Rob were
leading the charge in the right column. Rob
told Pete that he was going, and jumped to
the right, while Peterjumped left in his
52x12 and blasted past everyone to win,
with Rob 2nd, Dave 5th, and Rick 8th.
In the 40+ race, Laury Marshall
scored by giving the Big O a greatiead out
to victory. Mario S also thanks Laury for
pulling him to make the break at the Charles
City Road Race. He would also like to (hank
our almost-teammate Tracy for saving his
life by lending lum her skinsuit. "It was the
best chamois I ever felt" claimed an excited
Mario, who still managed to fuush 12th.
Scott Ramsey is finding it lonely in the
Cat.III races with only one or two team-
mates. He was looking forward to racing at
the Columbia Spring Classic with the powerfui cat N team, but the giant turn-out required a last minute sepazation of the two
categories. He felt good racing with Bill
Luecke, Tim Arnade, and soon-to-be teammate Ed Ayres(Ed is now a PIF teammate).
All breakaway attempts were caught and the
race ended in a big sprint finish. Using what
he learned in. the cat III race, Sco[t positioned himself further up and ended up finishing better. Scott feels that, "It was nice to
see NCVC dominate the N race with a win,
2nd, 8th and 10th. It's good that there is a
large number of N's racing, but more importanfly they're thinking about the race and
coming in with a plan and executing it."

Everyone else is at the Chesapeake
Road Race today, but I like the Pear Blossom Crit, and I have only bad memories
from Chesapeake. Besides Sandra has come
with today, so I have a cheering section. The
field is small, but there is a serious NCVC
presence: Tim Arnade, Bob Dodge, Gary
Anger, Tom Snyder, and Brian Johnston.
About three laps into the race Gary Anger
moves to the front on the down hill turn. I'm
sitting in sixth position. Suddenly, Gary has
his foot out of the pedal and is taking a
hopelessly bad line through the tum. I court
disaster myself, rubber necking as he heads
off the course. Bang! He just misses a fire
hydrant on the curb, and his back wheel begins to come off the ground. Now he's on
the sidewallc, and the rear wheel is head
high, but he looks like he might get the bike
under control! Ride it, Gary! Oh,no! Microseconds before the inevitable, I spot the
hedge he's aimed at. He can do it--he'll split
the~hedge and make it back into the back of
the pack! Kab000m! No he won't; now he's
doing the full aerial display. His race is over.
Luckily, we see him several laps later standing by the side of the course, apparently unharmed in spite of his brief career as a hedge
trimmer. Two laps later Brian flats. We're
rolling; should we wait for Brian? There's
no free lap, so it doesn't look like he'll get
back on.
Three laps later I decide to air myself
out on the backstretch, to see if anyone will
go. Ow,this hurts, but I'm clear. I solo for a
lap or two, and a giant Kaioy guy and a
Whole Wheel guy bridge up. Now we're
moving. Each rime up the little hill my legs
scream, but the gap is holding steady. Now
it's growing—I can't see the field behind us
anymore. With five to go I see the remnants
of the field only 100 meters ahead on the
hill. Pumped,I put the hammer down and
we quickly close the gap.
Now I have to get information. I ask
teammate after teammate,"How many guys
up the road?", but they are all silent. Can I
rest in the field, or are there chasers right
behind us? I'm losing my cool with my
friends now—why won't anyone tell me who
is chasing. In my anger, I don't even notice
the Kaloy guy rocket past me. Oh god, he's
got 30 meters, now I have to chase. Luckily
Bob Dodge and Tim Arcade go to the front
and pull him back. With two laps to go we
have left the field behind, but brought Bob.
with us. Bob asks "What do I do?""Keep
the other two with us" I tell him. Now it's
the back stretch of the final lap, and the
Whole Wheel guy launches. "Bring him
back, Bob," I yell. Immediately, he goes to
the front and pulls him back within striking
distance. I launch on the hill. The WholeWheel guy has blown, but the Kaloy guy
rockets past me to take the win.

From the Mike
Words of Wisdom from the Team Director
Mike Butler
On the May 20 and 21st, NCVC had its
first double header that I can remember. It
was also the most cooperative non-racing
team effort since the time we were left hanging after a promoting organization backed
out of the National Capital Open some yeazs
back. I was especially excited at the Poolesville race where folks worked, raced, and
then worked again. Others worked instead of
raced. We even had a wife, a girlfriend, and
one of Matt McGoey's boys (not to mention
one unnamed soul who volunteered at IBM
because "I don't have anything better to do."
I am always reluctant to name names, because some names are always forgotten. But
I feel it is better to recognize those I remember and hope that those not mentioned
will understand. NCVC owes a great deal of
thanks to... I started making a list, but the
index card was too small, so from memory
here goes: Dependable Jeanne Walsh,Energedc Pete Swan,Rob and Mrs. Bernier,
Scott Ramsey, Rick Monterosa(who also
brought two First Aid kits), Rob Lee, Hyun
Lee, Brad Greene, Scott Wilson, Channing Houston, Cary Weil, Hank Banta,
Pat Caldeira, Jean Claude Laboudigue
and a new guy, Tim Arnade,Bruce Oliver,
Darek Bushnaq,Dave Goodwin, Richard
Stein, and Cary Biand's friend Mary. I
know of five or six others who I saw pitching in.
One of the most common questions
asked when folks heaz how long.I've been
helping out with the club as president is,
"How do you handle all those headaches?".
First it was "Aspirin" Bruce, and now
there's Advil Bill and Anacin Tom. There
was always pre-Germany and post-Germany
Pete. Now its the likes of Channing Houston, Dave Goodwin, Scott Ramsey and Cary
Weil who always step forward, and many
who always respond when asked. NCVC has
indeed been lucky over the past 25 yeazs to
have folks like them to offset the few Primoes and Deadbeats and make this a successful club. So for all the ole-timers and
those to come, Thanks!
In taking the good with the bad, let me
apologize for the late arrival of the clothing.
It was indeed beyond anyone's control,
though VOmax, though not at fault or to
blame, could have reacted sooner. But anyway, you can pick up the stuff you ordered
at the next club meeting (July 10), as it was
shipped on May 25th. IF YOU WANT TO
MAKE A PURCHASE,please call me at
301 588 2087 before the meeting, since I
cannot bring the understock to the meeting.
Race results forms. PLEASE! IF you do
not use the form, you must include all the
columns. If you do not include the prize list,
you will receive Wheelie points for the
lowest prize list. A missing entry fee makes
it impossible to reimburse. You know what
really makes it tough? When I cannot understand your handwriting. Try printing. ONE
SHEET PER MONfH. Do not include late
entry fees. I assume that accounts for the
different costs submitted for the same race.
SOMERVII.LE, the grand-daddy and
grand-mommy of amateur criterium races on
the East Coast, if not the country, is always
fun. After such a successful 1994 -the first
one I'd missed in yeazs, I was hoping that
NCVC would score, so that I would not be
banned for life. Not that I'm superstitious or
anything, but I decided to bring the entire
family to counter any jinx- my presence
would cause. Mary had never attended this
race as a spectator, and as we got closer, was
Somerville...brought back many
fun memories...sharing abed
with Dale Stetina...
relieved that she had gotten over that pre
race jitters that she experienced for ten years.
We were also excited since we had at the
last minute got a reservation at the famous
Gateway Motel, which brought back many
fun memories. Like a couple NCVC Juniors
being kicked out after for diving into the
pool from the 2nd floor of the motel. Or
sharing a room with ten guys. And, are you
ready for this, sharing a bed with Dale Stetina. When we turned into the parking lot, we
almost puked; it was like seeing a High
school looker now old and ugly. The paint
was peeling off the doors, the Office was a
club called `°The Pulsater" which seemed
like a prerequisite to renting a room. We did
a quick Uie and were out of there. Thank
God for "Days Inn."
The weather forecast was not great, but
as it turned out it was a good risk. It had
drizzled all the way up and the race day
forecast called for more drizzle and afternoon showers. As it fumed out, it was a
cloudy day with sunshine for the men's race.
The severe weather hit Northern Virginia
when we hit Saffron Lane. Even though the
weather kept many of the spectators away,
there were still more spectators than at ail
the races held in Md/De and Va. in the last
five years combined.
Since the old die hands were there, there
was a certain amount of catching up, and
socializing. The races were as exciting as
ever, and our area and club did OK. In the
50+ race the pace seemed high, and the field
stayed together with a usual quantity of
casualties. NCVC's lifer Jim Montgomery
executed one of his patented sprints to the
line and finished second to California's Vic
Copeland. In the 40+,former NCVCer Paul
`°The Animal" Peazson, looking like he did
as a pro, kept attacking until he was eventually joined by Glen Winkle and trackies Skip
Cutting and Art the Dart. Then there were
three as Art lost his dart. With Cutting's
sprint, the other two took turns attacking un61 Winkle stayed away. Cutting and Paul
played a bit of track-play from side to side
of the street before Skip took the sprint.
Meanwhile, two others slipped off the front
for 4th and Sth. The Big O got on his big
gear and looked like he was playing with the
field before he jumped to take 2nd in the
field sprint to another one of my Homies, a
Guyanese living in Canada, and placed 7th.
T'he other two NCVC riders Mario and Peter
Nye were caught behind a one lap to go
crash. Mario thanked the gods that he did
not go down, as he's still oozing from last
weekend. In the 30+, Aubrey Gordon was
more than ready for the victory, with career
finishes of 2nd, 4th, and 7th. After finishing
.6th in Alabama, in April no less, he knew he
had condition. But the pack also held Virginia's Joe Deaton, who also had a good ride
down south, where he placed 3rd. Deaton
had the momentum to take the win, but
Aubrey fought his way out of a tight spot to
take 3rd. Last year's winner Chris Chong
Tenn, recovering from a cold and riding like`
it, used his know how to get in the money at
15th. The other two NCVC guys Charming
and Cary looked good and raced tough. In
the women's race, the who's who of
womens' criteriums were there. Plus a bunch
of roadies, including former NCVCer Marion Clignet and three other French national
team members. The race was fast and Mary
was on the sidelines with sort of a grin and
spacedout look, obviously switching between
being glad she was not out there and wishing
she was. Jessica Grieco made it three for the
weekend. Even the biggies have problems,

Epting Smooth at the Rough Ride.
John T. Epdng
I had purposefully delayed racing until
Charles Ciry (April 1, 1995) because I
wanted to extend my winter training (long
rides and intervals) and avoid mid-season
burnout. I felt I was in relatively good
physical shape, but you never know. I remained relatively calm all week before the
race. By Friday, however, I was increasingly
jumpy. I reached absolute hysteria on Saturday morning when we pulled into the parking lot. My first sights were 2 national
champions (Chip Berezny and Barry Free)
and Darell Vrugdenhill. Eventually, Jim
Montgomery, Phil Hepburn, Team Richmond (Ed Cottrell, David Swaggert, and
Mark Plourde), Bobby Phillips, Mike Roche,
David Carney and many others (about 50 in
all) also showed. NCVC was represented by
Mario Steven, Brace Oliver, Shuaib
Dawkins, Laury Marshall and Myron
I.ehtman.
I anticipated the race to start fairly easy,
but as Bruce said before the race you cannot
predict with this kind of field. I was somewhat surprised when Chip Berezny attacked
right after the first turn sending the pack into
a continual push-pull frenzy. With Montgomery, Berezny, Darell and Hepburn up front
from the start it was important to pay atten.tion.
After numerous tries and no successes,
a break finally formed late in the third lap
with Bruce, Montgomery, Darell and Barry
Free. This looked pretty good so I worked
hard to block. Chip and Phil (particularly
Chip) were going crazy trying to bridge up.
Finally, Barry Free blew and with only one
engine (Darell) the break was in sight starting the fifth and final lap. Mark Plourde and
Swaggert of Team Richmond went to the
front and pulled what remained of the pack
up to the break.
Right after the second turn and going
into the hill on the faz side of the course,
Montgomery came up and said that if Darell
and I took off now, the pack would shred.
Told him that sounded OK, but easier said
than done. Dareli and I attacked, Darell
seemed to blow and I attacked again. David
Carney and Mark Plourde came with me and
we had 600-1000 meters relatively fast, with
7 miles to ga
At this point after working hard the
whole race, there is nothing worse than being in a break and getting caught near the
finish line. So we needed to stay away. Working to make David go faster than his cnrise
control speed and trying to keep Plourde
pulling through, while checking to the rear,
we approached the last stretch where we almost knocked over two young girls playing
with their bikes in the road.(Ivan's speech
about losing concentration near the end of a
race came to mind). We survived that and
approached the last turn. I knew I could out
sprint Carney, but was unsure of Plourde.:
Yet, I was too crampy to try and drop
Plourde before the sprint. Carney led it out
from the kilometer line. I jumped with my
famous sprint (that I had practiced all winter) from 200 meters but Plourde went
around. On this day, 200 meters into the
wind and uphill was too early. Needed more
patience. So I got second. Brace sprinted in
for 9th. Somehow, Montgomery and Darell
managed to run into one of the lapped riders
right before.the last turn causing great havoc
in the pack and knocking Darell down.
Seemed like Ivan's theory at work again.
Mario was so tired after the race that on the
ride home he got out of the car, waited for
me to get out of the bathroom, bought a

drink, got back into the car, buckled his
seatbelt and then announced that he had
"forgotten” to go to the bathroom.
Day 2--Kent County Rough Road
Race--12 mile loop, rough roads and 2 secUons of unpaved roads with two railroad
crossings in the second stretch, plus two hills
(the second hill was a pretty good one). Only
19 riders this time and I figured that most
were pretty tired from Saturday. Following
Ivan's advice to the max (letting the race
develop before taking offl, Bang Free and I
took-off from the start line and were soon
joined by Montgomery and Darell. The
group continued this throughout the first 1
and 1/21aps with Bruce in a minor break
with Barry Free, and other breakaway at-~
tempts. The lead pack came back together
right after the second (harder) hill. Everyone
seemed a little pooped so I took off; I figured there was only 34 miles to go, over
rough roads with lots of headwind, so why
not. Eight miles later I was joined by Barry
Free (with that cute national jersey) and
Mark Plourde again.
This was a good break, but I would like
to get into a break soon with someone my
size. Given the rough roads (no free rolling)
and the wind, I knew that any group would
have trouble catching us if we just stayed
smooth. I was the strongest on the flats.
Mark is a good climber and Barry is one of
the best. Thus, going into the hill on the
third lap with 14 miles to go I dogged it at
150 bpm. I figured they would either wait or
I could get back on, but I didn't want to
blow. They waited. The fourth and last time
up the hill I led talking the whole way (but_ it
didn't feel good).
Going into the last few miles the race
took on a European surreal quality. It was
getting much darker, and seemed to begin to
rain. We were pretty tired (in fact Mark
bonked and just wanted a ride in for third-reminded me of Ed Cottrell from my adventures with Phil Hepburn last year). My
shoulders hurt from the roads. My back hurt.
Plus Barry and I almost slipped on the last 4
feet of unpaved road. The finish was uphill
into the wind. I jumped but didn't get clear
and forced Bazry to lead it out. He almost
got away at 100 meters but I got back on„and went around with several inches to
spare.
T'he pack came in for the remaining 7
places one by one. In fact, Swaggert who
flatted one mile from the finish, ran in carrying his bike for ninth place.(He had previously avoided crashing by riding his front
wheel over Montgomery's rear wheel after
Montgomery crashed; Tim looked a little battle weary at the end of the race, but said that
he was okay). Bruce out-sprinted Mike
Roche for 10th. What aday--much more fun

Virginia State Road Race Results
Information courtesy of promoter Ruth
Stometta
The Virginia State Road Race Championships took place in the shadow of the Blue
Ridge on two separate weekends. The agegraded categories competed on June 4th,
while the senior categories raced on the
18th.1'he course and the promotion (at least
for the age-graded races) were stupendous.
There was a full rolling closure of the roads
that allowed the racers to let it all hang out
through the downhills. Although the course
sported no enormous climbs, the relentless
undulation took its toll on the Master 30-44
field. By the end of the first big lap, the field
had shrunk to 20, and the second climb out
of the only major uphill on the course split
that group again.
