treasures when they changed to CD. For Heinz
– without any doubt - analogue was the perfect
media in fulfilling his audiophile dreams.
Unfortunately, a casualty of CD was the effect on
turntable production. Good, inexpensive record
players became rare, as many turntable manufacturers closed or moved into other areas.
Heinz began a quest for a simple, reasonablypriced and great-sounding deck!
Around this time, the Iron Curtain fell. Heinz
discovered a factory in the Czech Republic,
which was just in the process of closing down
their turntable production plant. Everybody
declared Heinz crazy, but he was convinced to
restart the production.
The products were redesigned from old, existing
designs, to achieve following criteria:

This Pro-Ject’s formula for success. Without
exception, all Pro-Ject products are designed
according to these objectives.
Philosophy
Pro-Ject Audio Systems is an Austrian company,
founded in 1990 in Vienna by Heinz Lichtenegger.
Heinz believed that analogue playback was the
most cost-effective and best way to listen to
music in audiophile quality. He maintains that
belief 25 years later.
At that time, analogue music reproduction was
declared as ‘dead’ and Compact Disc was the
rising star. But Heinz, who listens to music every
day, soon realised that listening to records had
its own fascination, which was missing in nearly
all digital media. Moreover, records were inexpensive due to a plethora of used LPs flooding
the world’s used record stores and charity

level, because music lovers wanted to enjoy
their record collections, libraries that were far too
valuable to disposed of. They want good turntable, not ones made from plastic. But they did
not want spend ‘crazy money’.

time before the inevitable return of analogue
audio to the market.
The now-legendary Pro-Ject 1 turntable established a new standard of sound reproduction at
an entry-level price. It was the start of a new
analogue era.
Pro-Ject Audio Systems is an exemplary paradigm of people working in close co-operation

by the EU with the Econet-Award.
