FREE-MARKET WARRIOR
LOREN SPIVACK
Loren Spivack, the Free Market Warrior is dedicated to teaching
patriots how to protect and defend the principles upon which the
United States was founded. He will speak on capitalism, socialism
and freedom.
Mr. Spivack was expelled from Concord Mills Mall in North Carolina
in July of 2009 for selling material critical of the Obama
Administration. Since then he has devoted his time to teaching
groups about free market economics. He conducts "Economic
Literacy" seminars across the United States. Mr. Spivack has
delivered his seminar on “Economic Literacy” to hundreds of groups
across the country.
Prior to founding his company, Mr. Spivack spent several years as a
marketing and management consultant in New York.
Mr. Spivack is the author of "The New Democrat" a parody history of the Obama administration based
on a famous Dr. Seuss book. With pitch-perfect rhyme and clever illustrations, "The New Democrat"
transforms the political personalities of our times into cartoon characters in a conservative morality play.
His most recent book, "The Gorax" parodies Al Gore and the environmentalist movement as a threat to
freedom and the American standard of living. Once again Mr. Spivack is both funny and poignant as
he makes the case that capitalism is the real victim of environmental extremists.
Mr. Spivack has a remarkable grasp of free market economics along with a wonderful talent for making
these ideas relevant and accessible to people in their everyday lives.

President’s Message
The April General Meeting was lively and fun. Over fifty ESGVRWF
members, associates, and guests came to hear speaker Ann McElhinney.
She was not only very informative, but passionate and entertaining to
boot! Fracking is important to U.S. energy independence, and Ann
separated the facts from the myths! She also mentioned a new
documentary that she and her husband, Phelim McAleer, hope to make
about abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell. It costs so much to make an
independent documentary (read “one that tells the conservative point of
view”), that these filmmakers use a new method called crowdfunding to
secure the necessary funds. To date, Ann and Phelim have raised
$1,838,115 online at Gosnellmovie.com. If they do not reach their goal of
$2,100,000 by May 12th, all proceeds will be returned to the donators.
Please consider contributing.
April 26, ESGVWRF sent a Republican student, Marc Rodriguez, to the
CFRW Southern Division Youth Advocacy Program. Marc attended 57th
ADRCC meetings while he was still in high school, and is currently an
associate for the 48th ADRCC. Also, he is the Friday Manager for the
Republican Center. He often serves as photographer for these groups.
Through Advocacy, Marc took part in sessions with fellow Republican
students, toured the Nixon Library, and heard keynote speaker Dinesh
D’Sousa.

ViewPoint’s June 3, 2014 Election Edition!
Not happy with the direction our State is going? We can do something
about it! We can work together to get Republican candidates through
the primary process so they get on the November election ballot. We’ve
prepared a special election edition of ViewPoint to help with this process.
In addition to Associate Joe Gardner’s regular column, the new
“Republican Center News” column, and Club News, this special issue:
 Summarizes the importance of the State’s primary process for many
Republican candidates;
 Explains the California Republican Party’s endorsement process;
 Identifies Republican Candidate’s running for office in the June 3
primary;
 Provides a Los Angeles County Judicial Candidates Voter Guide;
 Compares Republican recommendations on the propositions;
 Suggests a method for identifying a conservative Sheriff candidate.

Primary Election: Tuesday, June 3, 2014
From the desk of Joe Gardner,
Associate & Candidate for the 48th Assembly District
Have you heard about this bill called "District-based Elections?"
It is a bill to mandate the way cities with populations over 100,000 people conduct
their elections.
In the 48th Assembly District, this State-imposed law will affect West Covina and El
Monte. It will require those cities and others throughout the state to change from an
"at-large" election process to "district-wide" elections. If passed, cities will have to
initially go through the costly effort to draw up districts.
In 2009, West Covina had an election on this very issue. It was Measure D. It was proposed to have District-wide
elections. The measure was resoundingly defeated by the citizens of West Covina. They chose to keep "at-large"
elections.
This Assembly Bill, 2715 was introduced by Assembly Member Roger Hernandez, a former council member of West
Covina and representative for this district.
The first question you have to ask is what business is it of the State to interfere with local elections? City residents
have the right to decide how they are governed. The second question is how much will this cost? These are tough
economic times. Local city governments are struggling to provide essential services. This bill will inflict yet another
financial burden on them.
The third question would be why Mr. Roger Hernandez would think this was a good idea. Isn't he supposed to
represent local interests? What about local control?
How did this become a priority for Mr. Hernandez? Many in the 48th District and throughout the state are
concerned about jobs and secure economic futures for themselves and their families. They want communities
safe from crime. Why isn't Roger Hernandez focused on those issues?
One thing is clear. This is a reflection of someone out of touch with their constituents. We must replace
Assembly Member Roger Hernandez. vote4joegardner.com
Primary Elections:
More important than ever!
“State legislative, U.S. congressional, and state constitutional
offices are known as voter-nominated offices. In a primary
election, all candidates for a voter-nominated office are
listed on one ballot. Any voter may vote for any one
candidate in each contest, regardless of party preference.
The two candidates who receive the most votes in each
primary contest move on to the general election.”*
This process means it is possible for two members from the
same party to end up running against each other in the
November general election, e.g. two Democrats, two
Republicans. Let’s make sure our Republican candidates are
in the November election. Please help get out the vote.
Speak to your like-minded friends and family. Share
Republican candidate lists with them. And, above all, remind
everyone to vote in the June 3 primary.

Lisa and Chris Graham recently hosted a
candidate coffee. Here’s Lisa’s insight into
this important candidate-support activity.
---Jerri Potras, editor.
Hosting a Coffee & Dessert Meeting
To learn more about a candidate and
to introduce him or her to those in your
community, please consider hosting a
coffee and dessert gathering. This is a
special opportunity to ask questions,
have in-depth discussions, and
develop a good sense about a
candidate. The candidate has the
chance to explain his position clearly
with his own unfiltered words and to
meet a wide range of people. Working
to sort out real issues with real people
literally brings the political process
close to home. With the company of
your neighbors, friends and family you
can help a candidate and inform
those close to you.

News from the Center
April was a busy month at the East San Gabriel Valley Republican Center.
On April 19th, Joe Gardener held a Bar-Be-Que that was attended by about 50 guests. Joe and Art Alas
have been in the Center several times to start their campaign “phone banks”. Joe and Art are looking
for volunteers to help with precinct and phone bank activities. Joe is in the Center on Saturdays from
10:00 am to 1:00 PM. Art is in the Center on Friday evenings from 5:00 to 8:30 PM and on Saturdays and
some Sundays from 1:00 to 5:00 PM. Anyone wishing to volunteer should contact the candidates directly.
Joe Gardener’s phone number is (626) 407-7571 and Art Alias’s phone number is (626) 421-7662.
On May 1st Timothy Petarra of a group called the Righteous Right sponsored a political rally—America
Day—at Citrus College; we were invited to provide volunteers and literature. In spite of the almost 100
degree heat we were happy to support this activity. Numerous college students, facility and others
visited the rally. Art Alas, Joe Gardener and Marc Rodriguez all gave speeches to garner support for their
campaigns. Also in attendance was John Wong a candidate for County Assessor. Numerous political
groups were in there including: The John Birch Society, the California Freedom Project and others.
Other news: Starting Monday May 5th the
Center is closed on Mondays. We are now
open Saturdays starting May 10th from 12:00
to 5:00 PM (this schedule may be modified to
support the candidates). On June 2nd we will
resume our previous schedule. Remember –
The primary election will be held on June 3rd.
Art Alas stopped by the Center’s booth at the May 1 America Day
at Citrus College. The booth was staffed by Darrell Shimel, Norma
Shimel, and Jerri Potras. Handouts on political candidates and
political philosophy were well-received.
Joe Gardener has delivered 100 yard signs to
the Center so anyone wishing to support Joe
should drop by the Center and pick up a
sign. John Wong, Art Alas and Tim Donnelly a
candidate for Governor will also be supplying
us with campaign related materials including
signs and bumper stickers.

California Republican Party: The Endorsement Process 1
The California Republican Party (CRP) notes some confusion may exist over
the sample ballot voters receive. The confusion is attributed to the lack of
CRP-endorsed candidates. In addition, other parties may now endorse Republicans, whether or not the
candidate wants such endorsement. Here’s some tips on how to address this issue.
The CRP urges Republican voters to look for candidates who are Republicans and in contested races, for
voters to make an informed decision between the two or more Republicans who are running. We’ve
prepared a list of candidates to help with this process. See page 5.
The CRP endorsement process is triggered by county parties, e.g., Republican Party of Los Angeles
County, San Diego Republican Party, etc. Generally speaking, the CRP encourages candidates to seek
endorsements at the local (central committee) and district level (county Republican Party) during the
primary. In turn, the CRP focuses on building the strongest state party volunteer infrastructure and voter
turnout operation it can and to help all Republican candidates up and down the ballot in the general
election.2

Los Angeles County Judicial Candidates Voter Guide
We know it is important to vote for the judges who will enforce the law as written by the voters and legislatures.
We try to avoid voting for “judicial activists,” judges who imposes their own values on us by making law instead
of apply the law to facts of a case before them. Craig Huey has been studying judicial elections, especially
those in California, for more than 20 years. His “California Judicial Candidates Voter Guide” is a recognized
tool that helps voters select “the right judges.” The Los Angeles County section is excerpted below.
Candidates for counties throughout the state can be found on his website, www.judgevoterguide.com.
---Jerri Potras, editor, ViewPoint.
How the ratings work: Mr. Huey notes, “We research the candidates carefully. We talk too many on the phone.
We have evaluated their rulings, who appointed them, their endorsements and other criteria. . . . The final
rating is the average of the candidate’s Judicial Index and Qualifications. For example, if the candidate had a
Judicial Index of 8 and Qualifications of 6, their overall rating would be 7.

Due to controversy, the Republican Party
of Los Angeles County (RPLAC) did not
endorse a candidate for sheriff. One
candidate, Paul Tanaka, is a Republican,
Other candidates were Republicans but
changed to No Party or Independent to
increase electability. My suggestion is to
evaluate each candidate yourself. If you
see mostly Democrats and public sector
unions endorsing, you might consider
someone else. That’s what I do.

Werdna Beale is a native not
just to California, but to
Covina as well; her parents,
originally from Iowa, moved
to Covina in the early 1900’s.
Werdna met her husbandto-be in 1941 and they
married in 1943 at the
beginning of World War ll.
After the war, the Beales
decided to raise their family in Covina, too.
Once all her children were in school, Werdna
had some time to volunteer for various
community groups such as Covina Woman’s
Club—where, over the last fifty years, she has
served on about a dozen different
committees—the Covina Historical Society,
Intercommunity Hospital, East San Gabriel
Valley RWF, and the Republican Center. She
continues her activities with all of these clubs
today.
Barry Goldwater was the candidate that
sparked Werdna’s interest in working on a
Republican campaign. She remembers
spending many hours on Goldwater mailings!
From then on, she helped with all the
Republican candidates’ campaign work
that came through the Republican Center
where she was a weekly volunteer. Werdna
has special memories of helping
Congressman David Dreier starting with his
first run for office. She says it was exciting to
watch his political career advance over the
years. Joining ESGVRWF in 1977, Werdna has
served on the board as historian, and
assisted with membership and “anywhere
else needed.” As a lifelong Republican,
Werdna believes in conservative principles,
and says we must keep trying to get the
Republican message out to the public any
way that we can.

Club News: Working Together We Turn Words into Action
ESGVRWF’s Basic Handgun Class
Republican Women’s families and friends had a full day at Burro Canyon in the mountains above Azusa. Our
group of 27 had classroom instruction which covered various firearms - how they function and how to use them
safely. All ages were represented from 14 to 91. Many participants had not previously handled firearms;
several were a bit nervous about it. After many hours of close instruction at the range from the basic stance to
rapid fire techniques, all of the shooters did very well. New skills learned … safely and proficiently! This was
followed by class room time discussing current legal aspects of firearm use.

Texas Attitude: One day, a very gentle Texas lady was driving
across a high bridge in Austin. As she neared the top of the bridge,
she noticed a young man fixin’ to jump. ("fixin" in Texas means:
has the means or abilities to take action) She stopped her car,
rolled down the window and said, "Please don't jump! Think of
your dear mother and Father. He replied, "My mom and dad are
both dead; I'm going to jump."She said, "Well, think of your sweet
wife and precious children."He replied, "I'm not married, and I
don't have any kids."She said, "Well, then you just remember the
Alamo."He replied, ''What's the Alamo?''She replied, ‘’Well, bless
your heart! - You just go ahead and jump..you little Yankee
Democrat Bastard.. You’re holding up traffic”

America’s Founding Principles
What is the Difference between Progressivism and Socialism?
Both Socialism and Progressivism use government power to control economic outcomes. The
methods they use, however, are different. Socialism, strictly speaking, involves the government’s
ownership of the means of production in a society. In a socialist economy, there are no private
corporations that manufacture goods. All factories and companies belong to the state.
Progressivism, by contrast, allows private ownership and control of corporations and manufacturing
(thus a private economy and markets), although it does subject them to extensive government
administration mostly through heavy regulation as well as other controls.
From: Leadership for America: First Principals: Progressivism and Liberalism. www.Heritage.org
“Progressives have spent the better part of a hundred years pushing their agenda - and they've
hijacked everything from our kindergartens to our colleges to do it. The more 'educated' we get,
the dumber we become. And that has always been the goal. There's a reason that slave masters
wanted to keep their slaves illiterate: they understood that true education makes people long
for freedom and liberty. Today's slave masters are the professors and unions and bureaucrats
in Washington who run our education system.” --Glenn Beck
“Liberals claim to want to give a hearing to other views, but then are shocked and offended to
discover that there are other views.” --William F. Buckley, Jr.
