Saint Patrick’s Day in Vienna 2013
The largest and most magnificent St. Patrick's Day Party Vienna has
ever seen. Green beer shoots from the bulging brewery tanks
(Ottakringer, rwhat else!) and of course Guinness and this year only
the best Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey is being served. We were
there6
Vienna, 16th March. After Mass in the overflowing Johanneskapelle in the
Schottenstift, (founded 1155 by Duke Heinrich II of Austria) on the Freyung, Irish,
Scottish and Austrian celebrants moved outside the Schottenkirche to follow
amongst huge cheers of the thousands lining the streets the Pipes and Drums,
coming also from Scotland, and the Austrian Military Music by the Band of the
Gasworks to the Marquee next to the Burgtheater.
GUINNESS IS GOOD FOR YOU!

The entrance hall at Südtirolerplatz with
approximately 4100 square meters will be as
large as the whole of the Westbahnhof. It will
serve in the future as an underground
connection between the tube and train station,
the passages for passengers, however, will
only be usable after the full commissioning of
the main station in December 2014.

attendees who are quite new to Scottish dancing, so anyone turning up for the first time
won’t feel out of place. Charge is just 3€ per session in a 10 block, but the first trial class is
usually free. More information can be found on their website: www.rscdsvienna.org
The venue is in the hall of Sacré Coeur School on Rechte Bahngasse in the 3rd district, close

Weekday Walks
Walks take place Mondays and Wednesdays come rain or shine and always start at the same
place – 38a bus stop Armbrustergasse at 9.30am. The Monday walk is traditionally longer
and tougher but both walks do require stamina! The walks end in a café for a well deserved
drink. All welcome. Contacts Valerie 3709324, Sandra 3288452 or Gaye (Wednesday’s
only) 3288167.
Sailing on the Alte Donau

Vienna. Things aren’t exactly easy
for the old Westbahnhof. Not only
will it stop being fully operational
by the end of 2014, when the new
central station (Hauptbahnhof) will
be in full swing, but it will no
longer be allowed to act as the
terminus for most international
trains. No, it has to serve more as
an example of how pathetic it really
is compared to the new station. At
the moment only a sixth of the new
railway station is in operation. But
ÖBB project managers Judith Engel
and Karl-Johann Hartig drew
attention to the dimensions of the
site. It turns out that the whole
Westbahnhof is just as big as the
entrance hall of the new railway
station.

Travel News
The following items are with kind permission from
ABICS NEWSLETTER March 2013
Flight
British Airways. It was quite a pleasant
experience to travel on a “real” airline for a
change last week. With the current absence
of Ryanair flights to Edinburgh (and to
Bristol) it was necessary to use a 2-flight
journey to northern climes. Perhaps the
crowning glory was being able to take 2
suitcases each without any extra payment
and without having to worry about the
likelihood of exceeding weight limits. On
this flight, and maybe the other BA
departures, boarding was at last via the
tunnel rather than that dreary route using a
bus to reach the Arrivals area. Let’s hope
direct boarding continues for the
foreseeable future.
Ryanair flights to Edinburgh recommence
on April 2nd. Tue, Thu, and Sat. but at the
rather late times of 18.45 ex EDI and 20.50
ex BRA. Flights to/from Bristol also
recommence on this date, and those from
Liverpool and Birmingham will change
schedule in the same week.
Easyjet will restart their spring/summer
timetable from 31st March when there will
be daily Gatwick flights again, and twice
daily on most days.
Vienna Airport (Schwechat). British
Airways, and all the carriers which used to
operate from Terminal 2, are now to be
found in the revamped Terminal 1, and all
the check-in activities we associate with
Terminal 2 are now closed. The Easyjet
flights to Gatwick are however still to be
found in Terminal 1A.
Diners Card holders can now take the Fast
Track security lanes inside the airport just
by showing their card at check-in, but our
BA flights are in area D which uses
individual security checking gates and so
has no Fast Tracking possibility.
Luggage. We have often thought that a lot
of hassle would be saved when checking in
to budget airlines by wearing a multipocket jacket, rather than fighting with the
scales to get one’s luggage weight inside
the rather small allowances. One British
firm has come up with a special jacket
which has 12 separate pockets specially

BA are soon to take delivery of their first
Boeing super plane – the 787 Dreamliner,
assuming the ban on flying them is lifted
soon after the trouble with some of their
Lithium batteries catching fire. Thomson
Airways are also due to receive several of
these giant airliners imminently, and were
scheduled to begin flying them this March.

Trains and Trams
Britain. Edinburgh Trams. A very recent
visit to Edinburgh revealed that Princess
Street tramway installation work seems to
be complete, but the road immediately to
the west is still very much in the hands of
the tram line installers. All the new trams
can be seen out in the weather, but unused,
at the Edinburgh airport terminus. There is
a lot of talk in the streets about the
apparent serious waste of money in this
tram
system
London Underground, the world’s oldest
mass transit system, recently celebrated
150 years of operation (between
Paddington and Farringdon on the
Metropolitan Railway) by running a

booking services offer this special fare
without a reminder from the customer, but
you should have no problem at a manned
station.
Scottish Trains “Club 55” are again
offering monthly return tickets to
anywhere in Scotland (including Carlisle
but now not including Berwick-on-Tweed)
for £19 for the over 55s, or £17 for those
with a Senior Railcard. Last valid day
before the Easter peak period is March
East Coast Trains are celebrating the
launch of the James Bond movie Skyfall
on DVD by running a Skyfall express train
on the prestigious Kings Cross to
Edinburgh route. An enormous Bond
transfer has been attached across the first
two coaches, and Miss Moneypenny
(Naomie Harris) travelled First Class on
the inaugural run.
Austrian Rail. You may have noticed over
the past 2 or 3 years that it is (almost)
impossible to travel by train to Venice, at
least by the short route via Semmering and
Villach. This is because Italian railways
(Trenitalia) a few years ago declined to
continue cooperation in the operation of
this route, and especially for the direct
sleeper service. Just recently however the
Italian side has made a small move
towards restoring normal relations – they
have allowed one train per day in each

direction, but just between Villach and
Udine. There are still the 4 or 5 daily ÖBB
buses between Villach and Venice, which
link in with ÖBB trains to/from Vienna.
We are hopeful that in perhaps a couple of
years a full direct service between Vienna
and Venice will be restored.
Autoreisezug. The only Car Sleeper train
north from Vienna is now the one to
Hamburg; the Berlin one having been
withdrawn recently, while the Düsseldorf
route was withdrawn about 5 years ago.
There will however be a weekly summer
option from Schwarzach-St.Veit (SE of
Salzburg) to Düsseldorf, operated by DB.
OBB continue with their domestic car
transport routes, including Vienna to
Feldkirch (for Switzerland and places
west), Salzburg, Innsbruck and Villach,
and they are good value. The Feldkirch
route operates overnight with sleeper
coaches.

UK Passport Offices around the world are

NOT including the sending to UK. If you
can be in the UK long enough to apply

though a faster (but more expensive)
service is available at any of the 7 UK
Passport offices. See www.gov.uk/get-apassport-urgently for the small print.

Buckfast. A relatively new party drink is
hitting the markets of Britain, and
especially of western Scotland, though it
has actually been around for some time in
a different form. This is the “tonic” wine
Buckfast – often referred to as a Bucky! It
has featured on the BBC documentary
Britain's Really Disgusting Drinks and
there are many references to it being linked
to violent crime. The fortified red wine
drink is sold mainly in 75cl green glass
bottles which contain 15% alcohol and the
caffeine equivalent of about 5 cups of
coffee, plus several other minor
ingredients. It is manufactured by the
apparently responsible monks of Buckfast
Abbey in Devon, and marketed by
Chandlers of Andover since the 1920s, but
in recent years it has gained much
popularity amongst young drinkers, often
with dire consequences. Both of these
manufacturing groups are frequently being
called upon to justify production of this
rabble rousing concoction.
In January 2010 a BBC investigation
revealed that Buckfast had been mentioned
in 5,638 crime reports in the Strathclyde
area of Scotland from 2006–2009, equating
to an average of three per day, many of
which involved the use of the bottle as a
weapon. The pros and cons of banning this
quite strong “social” drink are coming
thick and fast in the media. The cost is
about £7.50 per bottle, but neither
Waitrose nor Tesco are currently stocking
it.

STAY ALERT---these PEOPLE LIVE AMONG US!!!!!!!
IDIOT SIGHTING No 1
We had to have the garage door repaired. The Sears repairman told us that one
of our problems was that we did not have a 'large' enough motor on the opener. I
thought for a minute, and said that we had the largest one Sears made at that
time, a 1/2 horsepower. He shook his head and said, "Lady, you need a 1/4
horsepower." I responded that 1/2 was larger than 1/4. He said, "NO, it's not.
Four is larger than two..." We haven't used Sears repair since.

The Battle of Näfels
The Battle of Näfels was fought on 9 April
1388 between Glarus (Swiss Canton) with
their allies, the Old Swiss Confederation,
and the Habsburgs. It was a decisive
Glarner victory despite being outnumbered
sixteen to one. The Battle of Näfels was
the last battle of the Swiss-Austrian
conflicts that stretched through most of the
14th Century. A few weeks after the Battle
of Sempach on 9 July 1386, the Old Swiss
Confederation attacked and besieged the
Habsburg village of Weesen on the
Walensee. The following year, Glarus rose

up against the Habsburgs and destroyed
Burg Windegg. Then, on 11 March 1387,
the town council declared themselves free
of Habsburg control.
In response, on the night of 21–22
February 1388, an Austrian army attacked
the village of Weesen and drove off the
Swiss forces. In the beginning of April,
two Austrian armies marched out to cut off
Glarus from the rest of the Confederation.
The main army, with about 5,000 men,
marched toward Näfels under the

Glarner attack.
Following a brief battle, the disorganized
Austrians broke and fled toward Weesen.
The collapse of the bridge over the Maag
or Weeser Linth dropped much of the
Austrian army into the river where they
drowned. Seeing the destruction of the
main column, Werdenberg-Sargans' army
retreated to the village of Beglingen (now
in the municipality of Mollis). The Glarner
and Confederation army had about 54 men
killed, who were buried at the parish
church of Mollis. Habsburg losses are less
well known, though are estimated to be
between several hundred killed and 1,700.
On 29 November 1389, the Abbot Bilgeri
had about 180 bodies moved from the
battle field and reburied at Rüti Abbey.
On 9 April 1388 the main army, under
Toggenburg and Thorberg, attacked and
captured the fortifications around Näfels.
The garrison held out for a short time, but
was forced to retreat. This force contained
the local garrison, about 400 Glarner
troops and a few dozen troops from both
Schwyz and Uri. As they retreated, the
Austrian army spread out to plunder the
village and farms. They retreated into the
nearby hill and as the Austrian army
spread out, the Glarners marched back out
into the snow and fog to attack the
Austrians. The Austrians, disorganized

(Czech) and Kingdom of Hungary,
Frederick II saw an opportunity to quickly
invade and annex the province of Silesia
(then part of the Bohemian Crown), which
would have added much needed land and
population to his kingdom. He
took it by
storm and nearly had the entire
province occupied. His troops
settled down into winter
quarters and were expecting an
easy land-grab when Maria
Theresa sent an army of about 20,000 men
led by Wilhelm Reinhard von Neipperg to
take back the province and assert herself as
a strong monarch.

The Peace of Füssen
Austria and Bavaria sign peace. The Peace
of Füssen (German: Frieden von Füssen)
was a peace treaty signed at Füssen,
Bavaria, between the Electorate of Bavaria
and Habsburg Austria. Signed on 22 April
1745, it ended the participation of Bavaria
on the French side in the War of the
Austrian Succession.
Bavaria fought Austria for three years, but
was unable to secure victory.
When Charles VII died in Munich on
January 20, 1745, his successor as Elector
of Bavaria, Maximilian III Joseph, signed a
preliminary peace with Austria. But a
strong war-party led by Ignaz von Törring
and supported by France wanted to
continue the war.
After the conquest of Prague by Bavarian
and French troops on 26 November 1741,
Elector Charles Albert of Bavaria declared
himself King of Bohemia. Elected
Emperor Charles VII on January 24, 1742,
Charles Albert was then crowned on 12
February.
After the decisive defeat in the Battle of
Pfaffenhofen on April 15, Maximilian
Joseph chose for peace. The formal peace
treaty signed in Füssen consisted of
seventeen articles, two side articles, and a
secret additional clause.
On the same day as his coronation in
Frankfurt, however, Austrian troops
occupied Bavaria and Hungarian hussars
plundered Munich. With French assistance,

ruler of the Habsburg lands from
1780 to 1790. He was the eldest son

enlightened absolutism; however, his
commitment to modernizing
reforms subsequently engendered
significant
opposition,
which
eventually culminated in an ultimate
failure to fully implement his programmes.
He has been ranked, with Catherine II of
Russia and Frederick II of Prussia, as one
of the three great Enlightenment monarchs.
His policies are now known as
Josephinism. He died with no sons and was
succeeded by his younger brother,
Leopold.

The Battle of

place on 20
April 1809, between a Franco-German
force under the command of Emperor
Napoleon I of France and a reinforced
Austrian corps led by FeldmarschallLeutnant Archduke Ludwig of Austria.
As the day wore on, FeldmarschallLeutnant Johann von Hiller arrived with
reinforcements to take command of the
three corps that formed the Austrian left
wing. The action ended in a complete
Franco-German victory. The battlefield
was southeast of Abensberg and included
clashes
at
Offenstetten,
BiburgSiegenburg, Rohr in Niederbayern, and
Rottenburg an der Laaber. On the same
day, the French garrison of Regensburg
capitulated.
While the Austrians initially held the river
line, Lannes' strike force crashed through
Louis' defences farther east. On the left,
the Austrians managed to conduct a
capable rear guard action, but during the
day the French smashed their opponents'
right flank and captured thousands of
soldiers. The day ended with the Austrians
barely holding onto a line behind the
Große Laber River. The next day, Hiller
withdrew to Landshut, separating the left
wing from the main army under
Generalissimo Archduke Charles, Duke
of Teschen near Regensburg (Ratisbon).
The French surrender of Regensburg on 20
April allowed Charles' army a retreat route
to the north bank of the Danube. The
Battle of Landshut was fought on 21 April.

The Neapolitan War
The Neapolitan War was a conflict
between the Napoleonic Kingdom of
Naples and the Austrian Empire. It
started on 15 March 1815 when Joachim
Murat declared war on Austria and ended
on 20 May 1815 with the signing of the
Treaty of Casalanza. The war occurred
during the Hundred Days between
Napoleon's return from exile and before he
left Paris to be decisively defeated at the
Battle of Waterloo. The war was triggered
by a pro-Napoleon uprising in Naples, and
ended after a decisive Austrian victory at
the Battle of Tolentino and Ferdinand IV
was reinstated as King of Naples and
Sicily. However, the intervention by
Austria caused resentment in Italy, which
further spurred on the drive towards Italian
unification.

The French forces withdrew in
March 1867, and Juárez and his army
moved back into Mexico City.
Refusing to abdicate, feeling that he
could not honourably desert “his
people,” Maximilian was made
supreme commander of the imperial
army by his conservative Mexican
backers. At Querétaro, Maximilian’s
small force was surrounded, starved,
and finally betrayed into capitulation (May
15, 1867). Even though Victor Hugo,
Giuseppe Garibaldi, and many of the
crowned heads of Europe petitioned Juárez
to save Maximilian’s life, the Mexican
president refused to grant clemency, given
that thousands of Mexican lives had been
lost in this latest struggle for independence
from foreign domination. On June 19,
1867, Maximilian was executed on a hill
outside Querétaro.

Maximilian intended to rule with paternal

By April 1865 the French army had

driving Juárez northward almost into
Texas. But that month the American Civil
War ended, and the United States

30th April 1934
Ständestaat (English: Corporative State) is a term used by historians to describe the
corporatist and political Catholic government in Austria between 1934 and 1938. It was based
on a ruling party, the Fatherland Front (Vaterländische Front) and the Heimwehr (Home
Guard) paramilitary units. Leaders were Engelbert Dollfuss and, after Dollfuss' assassination,
Kurt Schuschnigg, who originally were politicians of the Christian Social Party, which was
quickly integrated into the new movement.
10th April 1938
The National Socialists seized power on
the evening of March 3, 1938 and German
troops marched into Austria on March 12;
the Federal President W. Miklas resigned
from office on March 13, 1938 and the
national-socialist Federal Government
passed a constitutional law stating that
"Austria is a province of the German
Reich", and a Reich Law (Reichsgesetz)
in the same wording was published in
Berlin. The implementation was put into
the hands of the gauleiter of
the Saarland province, J.
Bürckel,
who
was
temporary leader of the
Nazi Party (NSDAP) and
became
"Reich
Commissioner
(Reichskommissar) for the
Reunification of Austria
with the German Reich"
following the „plebiscite”
over the Anschluss on April
4, 1938. The government
was
called
"Österreichische
Landesregierung" (Austrian Provincial
Government) and was headed by A. SeyßInquart

Reich
Governor
(Reichsstatthalter); it remained in power
until 1939, when it was forced to hand

over its powers and liquidate the hitherto
existing Austrian state (First Republic).
J. Bürckel was given far-reaching
authorities after April 10, 1938, e.g. the
authority to instruct the Reich Governor,
but not including Wehrmacht (the German
Armed Forces) and economy. The name
"Österreich" (Austria) was replaced by
"Ostmark".
(Later
„Donauund
Alpengaue“ „Danube- and Alpine
Counties“ to erase the name
„Austria“. Lower- and Upper
Austria were renamed: Lowerand Upperdonau/danube)
The replacement of leaders in
the public and private sectors
led to drastic measures. On
April 1, 1938, the first Austrian
officials and patriots were
deported to the concentration
camp in Dachau, other persons
were
temporarily
arrested.
Along with Austrian National
Socialists,
many
German
nationals took over leading positions,
which caused many problems, especially in
the economy. Austria’s Gold Reserves
were transferred from Vienna to Berlin to
fund German re-armament.

EUROPEAN PREMIERE
BLACK TIE
by A.R. Gurney
18 March – 27 April 2013
SYNOPSIS
In A.R. Gurney’s delightful new comedy a family tries to organise a wedding
against all the odds, trying to balance time-honoured traditions in a changing
world.
In a slightly tacky hotel room, Curtis is getting ready for the rehearsal dinner of
his only son’s wedding. He is looking forward to the father of the groom’s
prerogative – the speech to toast the happy couple. When he calls upon his late
father for advice, his ghost makes a prompt appearance – a very eloquent and
debonair ghost indeed, upholding the unwritten rules of the WASP heritage.
Alas, traditions fly out of the window one by one as the party plans unravel: The
dinner’s careful seating arrangements are being overturned by a smitten friend of
the bride, the menu is challenged by an Orthodox Jewish guest and the exhusband of the bride plans on delighting everyone with one hour of stand-up
comedy! And when the groom, in despair, finally confesses he has cold feet,
Curtis finds that balancing tradition and the needs of his future family may
prove too messy for a black tie affair.

KEY FOR TWO

13 May – 29 June 2013
Ticket sales from 15 April 2013
SYNOPSIS
In this wickedly amusing play by two master craftsmen of comedy, Harriet, a
divorcee living in an elegant flat in Brighton, solves her financial problems by
entertaining two married gentlemen callers on different days of the week. Each
man thinks he is the only one in Harriet’s life, and Harriet orchestrates their
comings and goings with elegant artistry. The scheme faces collapse when her
friend Anne, whose marriage is teetering, arrives at the flat hotly pursued by her
husband. Unfortunately, one of Harriet’s lovers is confined to her bed with a
sprained ankle and the second lover turns up unexpectedly, closely followed by
two irate wives in search of their itinerant husbands. The indescribable
confusion that ensues builds to a rich complexity of mistaken identity,
splendidly farcical situations and a climax of comic wizardry.

Traditionally seen as one of Shakespeare's

escape parental control and the "sharp
Athenian law" of their elders by eloping into
the forest outside the city. Unfortunately they
stumble into civil war in fairyland, where King
Oberon and Queen Titania fight over
possession of a beautiful young Indian
"changeling" boy. The appearance of the
"rude mechanicals", a group of Athenian
workers, including the weaver Nick Bottom,
compounds the confusion. Chaos, confusion
and "shaping fantasies" reign before the final
settlement of the play, but underneath all the
hilarity many critics have discerned more
ambivalent attitudes towards parental control
and the destructive power of desire. These
approaches in no way detract from the
exquisite lyricism of many sections of the play,
but make it a more complex and effective
comedy than has often been appreciated.
