JUDGES NEEDED FOR SENIOR PROJECTS
Each year, graduating seniors from the Cherokee County School District are required to complete this capstone
project. Throughout the year, students work on completing them. The final element is a presentation of the project
components to a panel of judges. The panel is composed of teachers
and community members. Because our school has over 425
students participating in the Senior Project this year, we
will need approximately 200 community members to
participate as judges.
Judges are not required to have a student
enrolled in the school system. Your
commitment would involve approximately
three hours of your time on either Tuesday,
April 26, 2016 or Wednesday, April 27, 2016.
Shifts will begin at 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM. You
will receive training on the scoring process
and have refreshments during the first hour,
and then you will view and judge seven or
eight student presentations. Judges who do
have a student enrolled cannot judge their own
students’ project.

WISE CLUB HAPPENINGS
The second GNO hosted by our WiSE club
occurred on October 29th. The theme of the
night was chemistry-based activities with a
ghoulish twist! The young ladies created glow
in the dark slime, made ultraviolet bracelets,
and much, much more! The middle school girls
who came learned about ultraviolet light, slime,
the pH scale, and how to conduct experiments.
The ladies in the club helped share their love of
science, and they can’t wait for the next one,
which will be December 3rd.
Since the start of school, the girls in WiSE have
had the privilege of meeting and speaking with
successful women in engineering careers. So
far, they have met computer science engineer,
Emily Lord; electrical engineer, Anna Cooks
and industrial engineer, Allison Williams. These
professionals have inspired the girls to pursue
a career in engineering and answered many
questions they had about the specifics of types
of careers in this field. Everyone in the club is
excited for the many opportunities to meet even
more women professionals in the future.

SEQUOYAH LIBRARY HAS A LOT TO OFFER
Lindsay Sheppard, Youth Services Coordinator at the Sequoyah Regional
Library System, spoke with students at Woodstock High School, during
Teen Read Week, about resources available at the public library. She
also led fandom trivia for students at WHS and virtually with River
Ridge High School and Creek View High School. This as a collaboration
between media specialists Pati Olton (WHS), Leslie Hicks (WHS), Keara
Rubin (RRHS), and Anne Theirs (CVHS).

October 13, #CareerCafeWHS hosted a
Financial Aid Parent Night with guest
speaker Marcus Hilliard from the Student
Finance Commission. Over 60 parents
were in attendance with questions about
GACollege411. Olivia Steele, Daryl Harris,
and representatives from the U.S. Army were
also available to speak with parents about
financial aid opportunities.
CAREERS IN ENERGY WEEK
For Careers in Energy Week, #CareerCafeWHS partnered with Olivia Steele to host guest speaker Monty
Green, president of the Wisdom to BELIEVE Foundation. He spoke with students from Karen Zayance, Kelly
Burke, Loretta Cameron, Deborah Hipp, and Steve Epperson’s classes about STEM Careers.
LIFESIZE VIDEO CONFERENCING
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, students
from Sonya Breaux’s class read and performed a
story in Spanish for students in Woodstock Elementary
School’s ASP via the LifeSize Video Conferencing
Equipment. This was a collaborative effort among Mrs.
Breaux and the media specialists, Pati Olton, Leslie
Hicks, and Amy VanFossen.
LATIN JUNIOR CLASSICAL LEAGUE FALL FORUM
Our WHS Junior Classical League competed at the Georgia Junior Classical League
Fall Forum on Saturday October 10th at Blessed Trinity High School in Roswell. This is
the kickoff event for JCL in Georgia, and is attended by hundreds of Latin students from
across the state. Each year, we compete in various events as a club and as individuals
against some pretty fierce competition. This year, we brought home several awards!

The Social Studies Department at Woodstock High School is proud to announce the
winners of our 2015-2016 Woodstock High School Social Studies Fair. The Fair was held
on Tuesday, October 20. We will be sending the top five scoring projects for competition
at the county level. The Cherokee County Social Studies Fair will be held on Tuesday,
November 17 at Woodstock High School. Congratulations to the following students who

guests from Goodwill’s C3: College and
Career Catalyst Program. They worked with
students in Cathy Robert’s class by providing
tips for their resumes.
TEEN READ WEEK, READING TO ELEMENTARY
STUDENTS VIA LIFESIZE VIDEO
For Teen Read Week, Heather Bolt’s Early Childhood Education
class read to students at Woodstock Elementary School and
Sixes Elementary School via the LifeSize Video Conferencing
Equipment. Her students used Storybird.com to create their own
children’s books to share with the elementary students. This was a
collaboration between Mrs. Bolt and media specialists Pati Olton,
Leslie Hicks, Amy VanFossen and Kim George.

WHS MARCHING WOLVERINE BAND
The Woodstock Marching Wolverines recently completed a successful weight-gaining campaign. While there is no doubt that
members of the band lose weight during summer camp, for a few short weeks this fall the band sets their sights on gaining as
much weight as possible. The best part? In spite of all their added weight, the band looks better than ever. So, how does the
band gain weight and look so good? Here’s how they did it in three easy steps:
Blue Ridge Mountain Marching Festival (Fannin County High School)
Every large meal starts with an appetizer, Blue Ridge was just that. The Marching
Wolverines started their feast with an impressive showing: Class 4A Guard, second
place. Class 4A Percussion, second place. Class 4A Band, first place.
Contest of Champions (Jacksonville State University, AL)
The Marching Wolverines had tasted victory the week before
in Blue Ridge, which made them hungrier. So, they treated
the Contest of Champions like it was a buffet, and loaded
up on the following: Drum majors – Superior, second place.
Color guard – Superior. Percussion – Superior, first place.
Band – Superior, first place. Most outstanding Percussion,
Band. Highest Visual Impression. Second overall band.
Peach State Marching Festival (Rome, GA)
The band went on a feeding frenzy at this
competition, hosted by the Rome Middle
and High School bands. Nearly 30 bands
performed, and your Wolverines filled
their plates once again. They feasted on:
Color Guard - Best in Class, All Superiors.
Percussion - Best in Class, all superiors.
Drum Majors – all superiors. Band overall –
1st place, all superiors!
So the competition season has come to a
close and the Marching Wolverines have put
on some weight ahead of the winter months.
They’ve never looked better, and it’s safe to
say that next season they hope to gain more.
*Much to the relief of the uniform committee, the weight gain was in trophies and pride only.
Please continue to keep your eyes peeled for upcoming Spirit Nights at Peace-Love-Pizza, Canyon’s Burger Company, and
GameDay Sports Bar and Grille – and make sure to support YOUR Marching Wolverine Band. And don’t worry if you can’t keep
up with their gains.
DECA FALL BLOOD DRIVE A SUCCESS
The Woodstock High School DECA Chapter sponsored
Blood Drive for the American Red Cross on October 13,
2015. The event took place at the school. A total of 176 pints
was donated by students, faculty, staff and community
volunteers.
As part of DECA’s Community Service Program of Work,
the organization’s members planned and executed the
promotional activities for the blood drive. Working in
conjunction with the American Red Cross, the students
distributed flyers and recruited students for the event.
The turnout was very good with almost 200 students,
faculty and staff participating in the drive. Members of the
business community and Woodstock High School parents
also donated. DECA members volunteered to help during
the blood drive by manning the registration table and the
“canteen”, where blood donors relax and recuperate with
juice and cookies, and by escorting students safely back
to class. This was the first of two blood drives that DECA
organizes each year at Woodstock. This year marks the 11th
year that DECA has sponsored blood drives.
The American Red Cross conducts blood drives in all
schools in Cherokee County as well as in other schools
throughout the state. Through volunteer blood donors, the
Red Cross is able to meet its mission goals on an international level. DECA, An Association of Marketing Students, is a
global organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and
management in high schools and colleges.

The WHS Volleyball team is selling Tervis Tumblers again this

TEEN READ WEEK CLOTHING DRIVE
During Teen Read Week, the media center partnered
with MUST Ministries for a clothing drive to help
teens in our community. This was a united effort
among high school media specialists and was
implemented at all six high schools.
CLEMSON DECLAMATION CONTEST
WHS World Language students dominated at the 43rd annual Clemson Declamation
Contest! On Saturday, October 24, 2015, we had students compete in four languages –
American Sign Language, French, Latin, and Spanish, and we took home medals for every
language! The winners are: For ASL, Claire Kurt 2nd place; for French 1, Mason Caron
2nd place; for French 2, Lupita Medina 3rd place; for Latin 1, Jacob Gravely 2nd place and
Joshua Thomas 1st place; for Spanish 2, Matthew Thomas 3rd place, for Spanish 2, Anna
Fournaris 1st place; and for Native Spanish, Dania Bañon 3rd place and Rebecca Alonzo
1st place. We are Woodstock!
SHS AND IC VISIT COLBERT SQUARE
The Woodstock High School Spanish Honor Society and the Interact Club visited
Colbert Square Senior Housing in Woodstock on October 24th, where we offered
lunch to the residents. Students also
celebrated October Birthdays, Halloween
and served dinner and desert. The residents
were very happy to see young students
helping out!
COAT DRIVE AT NORTH FULTON CHARITIES
In November, the Interact High school and Spanish Honor
Society were helping at North Fulton Charities to deliver coats
to families in need. It was a great experience to share and care
for others, and at the same time to practice Spanish in real life
outside the classroom.
NJROTC CADETS EXCITING FALL
It has definitely been an exciting fall for WHS NJROTC! We started off the month of October with the
Atlanta 2-day Breast Cancer walk, with cadets Mattie Cantrall, Emily Whittaker, Dee Smith, and Regan
Childree helping out with a rest area. On October 4th, one of our cadets, Michael Bejarano, swore into
the United States Army, and another cadet, Lee Hoofnagle, swore into the United States Marine Corps
on October 27th!
This month, our Drill Team, Color Guard and Academic Team competed. Our Color Guard placed 5th,
Drill Team placed fourth, and the Academic team took home 2nd Place! Some individual awards were
given out as well. Cadet Evan Setter placed 5th in academics and Cadet Robert Birke placed 3rd.
In addition to the drill meets, we also had our first annual Platoon Games! Platoon games is a competition
between platoons, where they participate in PT events, but also fun events like kickball, the dizzy izzy,
and tug of war. All of the platoons gave it their best and played their hearts out, but it was Seventh
platoon that took first place. It’s definitely an exciting achievement to win first place for the first ever
platoon games!
Our unit also volunteered for the Canton Zombie Fest and Carmel Elementarys Fall Festival, where our
cadets worked a parking detail and also helped with crowd control and security. Our unit has done a
substantial amount of community service this year. In fact, we have 1200 hour accumulated already!
In addition, our unit’s seniors were recognized for their hard work as JROTC cadets at senior night;
Cadets Mattie Cantrall, Lee Hoofnagle, Michael Bejarano, Diamond Rosemond, Robert Birke, Joana
Cantu, Brandy Velasquez, Isaac VanBuren, Rasheed Gibson, and Emily Whittaker. We would like to
thank our seniors for their hard work, and wish them good luck because after this school year, they are
moving on to bigger and better things!
Finally, we took a field trip to see the Great Georgia Air Show and looked at many vintage aircraft, other
static displays and watched some aeronautical acrobatics from a variety of pilots culminating with the
US Navy’s Blue Angels.
NATIONAL HONOR ART SOCIETY
The Woodstock High School chapter of the National
Art Honor Society has been busy! They created the
fall theme decorations for the Orchestra and Band
Fall Show October 27th, and they hosted the WHS Fall

WOODSTOCK VOLLEYBALL
The 2015 season was another successful one for the Woodstock High School Volleyball teams. The freshman and junior varsity teams both ended
up with winning seasons and a lot of growth within each of the players. Thanks go out to our coaches: Chelsea Johnson, Cathy Head, and Patti
Tressler. They did an outstanding job and we are all so proud of the girls.
The 2015 Varsity season was also a big success. We went undefeated in the Collins Hill Classic and showed very well. We also ended up with a big
winning season along with another return to the state playoffs. We played a very tough team in the first round of playoffs that ended our run. Our
seniors played their last match as WHS Wolverines and the underclassmen are already preparing for next year. A special thanks to Coach Gahan
for his assistance this year. Also, a Word of Congratulations to Coach Gahan on his marriage September 12th.
Tryouts for next year will be held in May but the dates have not been released. The girls will need to listen to announcements for a meeting after
school sometime in January or February. We will also be visiting the middle schools to disperse information so if you know someone who is
interested in playing next year please make them aware that try outs are in May and the dates will be announced.
We hope that all of you have a very happy holiday season and are safe and warm.

LADY WOLVERINE SOFTBALL
Congratulations to the Lady Wolverine Softball team in their success this season. The Lady
Wolverine’s had a fantastic season going 25-7; winning the Region Championship and making it
to the Sweet 16! Additionally, the team had several players that were selected to the All Region
1st Team. They are Freshmen, Alisha House and Sophia Tunon; Junior’s, Breanna Roper, Lexi
Solorzano, and Honorable Mention Senior, Danielle Rubin. Selected as Pitcher of the Year for
Region 5-6AAAAAA is Freshman Laura Bishop. Coach Dempsey shares “this team has such a great
chemistry and a great work ethic which lends itself to “Woodstock Magic”. Each player that has
ever played at Woodstock, to the current team members had a part in this Championship, it’s truly
a family environment.” Coach Dempsey, the coaching staff and Woodstock Softball Booster Club
would also like to thank our fans, administration, parents, supporters and sponsorships for their
support this season. The Lady Wolverines will be returning all but two starters and will be working
hard this off season to prepare for next year.
COFFEE SHOP, MEDIA CENTER AND SPECIAL OLYMPICS
Students in Ms. Waller’s and Ms. Heil’s classes learn job skills and work in the Coffee Shop, the Media Center, and other areas in the school.
Recently, our Special Needs students prepared a healthy new drink for Mr. Smith, our Principal. The drink included pineapple, banana, spinach
and oranges.
To prepare for “Pink out Spirit Day” Mr. Smith agreed to get his nails painted by Gabe and his friends. Mr. Smith was pinked out from nails, to
fingers, to shirt and more! The students enjoyed taking part in helping Mr. Smith get ready for our Football Game and showing our school spirit!
Bryan Tice helps keep the Media Center clean. This is one of Bryan’s jobs and he is enjoying it. Students in Ms. Waller’s and Ms. Heil’s room do
help tidy the Media Center to help keep the area clean for our students here at WHS.
We recently held our Special Olympics Sports Day. From playing basketball and shooting some hoops to playing some softball, everyone had a great time.
HISTORY BOWL/BEE TEAMS
On Saturday, October 31st, the History Bowl/Bee team traveled to Cedar Shoals High School in Athens, GA for the first competition of the season.
Cole Keenum, John Mack, Andres Rincon, and Malcolm Green teamed up to complete the day as a Varsity Semi-Finalist which means they scored
high enough to garner a trip back to Washington, D.C. to compete at the Varsity level in the National History Bowl/Bee Championships in April! This
is the first time our History Bowl Team has qualified for Nationals in the history of WHS! Also, for the second year straight, Andres Rincon earned
his spot at Nationals to compete solo in the JV History Bee also in Washington, D.C. in April. We are very proud of our History Bowl/Bee students
and look forward to two more competitions – Evans, GA in January and Newnan, GA in March – as we work and prepare for Nationals in April.

MODEL UNITED NATIONS TEAM
The Model United Nations Team competed at
Georgia State University November 9th and 10th.
Gus Campbell, Cole Keenum, AJ Cox, Malcolm
Green, and Nimra Ahmad represented Egypt.
AJ received an Outstanding Delegate Award for
his representation of Egypt in the United Nations
Environment Protection Committee - the highest
that could be received!
Zach Hopton, Andres Rincon, Jessica Senquiz, and
Greg Carroll represented Somalia very well too!
THE PEACE MOVEMENT, HELPING
OTHERS
The PeaCe Movement is a non-profit cause
started by two students from Woodstock High
School and a student from Cherokee High School.
The group’s primary objective is to raise money
for organizations that help to make a difference
in the world. To do this they designed t-shirts and
sold them at Woodstock, Cherokee, and Walker
High School. All profits went to Doctors Without
Borders, an organization that helps wounded
refugees in the Middle East. The first fundraiser
generated a total of $508.50.

DECA STUDENTS ATTEND ‘EPIC’ CONFERENCE
Nine members of Woodstock High School (WHS) DECA attended the State Fall Leadership Development Conference October 22-23.
The Conference was held at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel in Atlanta. During the conference, students had the opportunity to attend
team-building and leadership activities, hear inspirational and motivational speakers, and to network with other students from around
the state. The WHS DECA Chapter officers who attended were: President Cydney Moore; Vice-President of Communications Stivens
Salazar; Vice-President of Finance Patrick Nolen; Vice-President of Membership Kara Landsiedel; Vice-President of Community
Service Ryan Brusie; and Vice-President of Social Activities Michael Papadimitriou. Others members attending were Ben Warwick,
Maverick Borges and Tahj Brown.
The Conference attendees participated in the Statesman Award Test, an assessment of knowledge about National and State DECA.
Seven Woodstock DECA members earned certificates for their score of at least 90%. The students who earned the Statesman Award
are Cydney Moore, Stivens Salazar, Patrick Nolen, Kara Landsiedel, Michael Papadimitriou, Maverick Borges and Tahj Brown.
The DECA Fall Leadership Development Conference is an annual event designed to give DECA Chapter officers and other members
the opportunity to enhance their leadership and teamwork skills, and serves to
kick off the competitive events activities that take place in the spring in Atlanta.
State winners will compete at the DECA International Career Development
Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. This year’s DECA theme is “BE EPIC”.
DECA, An Association of Marketing Students, is a co-curricular student
organization that promotes the principles of marketing, management, and
entrepreneurship, and supports emerging leaders through student-centered
activities and competitive events.

ENGINEERING STUDENTS CREATE DRAGSTERS
The Engineering Concepts class just finished designing and racing CO2 Cars. Using the Engineering Design Process, students were
required to research the aerodynamic designs of CO2 cars and brainstorm ideas. These ideas were used to create thumbnail sketches.
Using their sketches and specified design constraints, students produced scaled drawings. Finally, they made their prototypes. While
racing their cars, students realized that weight, friction, and alignment, downforce, in addition to design, are important factors in
creating a fast dragster. Students also learned the importance of following criteria and constraints throughout the design process.
Second period race winners were Marla Silvers, first place, and Christian Epps, second place, with Virginia Cason’s dragster earning
“Best in Show.” Third period winners were Greg Carroll, first place, and Reese Mallory, second place, with Griffin Dominquez and
Pedro Arreaza earning “Best in Show.”

TSA TRIP TO STATE FAIR
In October, Woodstock’s Technology Student
Association, or TSA, had the awesome opportunity to
take a trip to the state fair in Perry in order to compete
with hundreds of other TSA chapters from all across
the state. Our students competed in various events,
ranging from catapults, CO2 cars, Rube Goldberg
Machines, and many other exciting events. The
competition was fierce, but Woodstock managed to
place in the Chapter Recruitment competition!
AGENCY INFORMATION FAIR / DISABILITIES
SAVE THE DATE! Cherokee County School District will be holding
an AGENCY INFORMATION FAIR on Thursday, March 10, 2016,
2:30 PM to 5:00 PM. Parents and Teachers, come and learn about
organizations that provide services for children with disabilities
from preschool aged through adult post-secondary options! The
fair will be held at the Cherokee Recreation & Parks Building, 7545
Main Street, Building 200 (middle building) in Woodstock, Georgia.

There was plenty of fun to be had when the
competitions were over! The fair hosted a wide
assortment of rides, from haunted houses to fullblown rollercoasters. Not to mention, every kind of
deep-fried food you can think of. When all the fun
was over, the students came home with valuable
competition experience and advice, important relationships with students from other TSA chapters across the state, and their minds
fully focused on the upcoming state conference in Athens.
ELVES
Hi there! This is your jolly ole elf, Mr. Oglesby. We are writing our lists and checking them twice as we get ready for our annual
celebration for the children in our area! The Elves Club is so excited to welcome Darrah Smith and Carmen Carvajal as sponsors
this year! Their help, along with many other awesome teachers and staff, has been instrumental to what I think will be our best
celebration to date! The club has been busy raising funds for the children. We started off the year with shirt sales and a hat day. We
have recently begun our lollipop sale and the annual pennies for presents drive. We even helped the ROTC clean the stadium and
parking lot after the Roswell game. The elves have been busy for sure! Our celebration is on December 16th in the media center from
2-4pm. We will have all sorts of games and goodies, presents to open, face painting, and pictures with a special guest!!!!!

WOODSTOCK WOLVERINE MATHEMATICS TEAM
The Woodstock Wolverine Mathematics Team is off to a good start this year! The mathletes placed 12th at the rigorous North Fulton
Math Tournament. This was our first tourney of the year and with over 25 schools in attendance, the 2015 team’s performance was
the best in team history. The students then took the KSU test on October 28th and went to the very challenging Rockdale tournament
on Halloween Saturday. The test results for KSU will be out soon. Even though we didn’t meet our goal of breaking the top ten
at the prestigious Rockdale tourney, freshman Andy Jiang made it to the tiebreaker round for the top 12 individuals! The team
continues to practice hard every Friday morning at 7:30AM in preparation for the all-important County Tournament on November 14th
at Reinhardt University. I am so proud
of our young team! Future tournaments
include Lassiter on December 5th and
the state tournament should we qualify
on the 14th of November at County.
On a final note, we are very proud
to announce the continuation of a
Cherokee county mathematics tradition;
the Saint Valentine’s Day Mathacre on
February 6th 2016! This is our very own
mathematics tournament and this year
the entire tournament is being written by
senior Michael Gustafson! He is working
very diligently to make our tourney just
as challenging as those now famous
competitions we travel to with our team.
Good job team!
SGA HAS BEEN BUSY!
SGA has had an incredible first semester so far and looks
forward to all of the events coming up for the rest of
the year. We have already had an incredibly successful
homecoming as well as participating in some community
service projects. October 30th was the last day for
students to bring in canned goods for our second annual
participation in the Atlanta FalCan food drive. Woodstock
collected over 1,000 items filling 10 barrels for the Atlanta
Community Food Bank. The Food Bank will provide for
needy families all across metro-Atlanta. SGA is now
gearing up for the spring semester which will include
events like the Mr. and Miss Wolverine Pageant as well
as Prom. This year Prom will be held in Atlanta’s Georgia
Freight Depot on April 30 from 8 PM – 11 PM. Ticket sales
for Prom begin on November 30. Ticket prices will start at
$45 per ticket and will be available for purchase online and
Friday mornings in the rotunda.

Remember to get your flu shot! Georgia is one of the first states to show flu activity. The flu shot this year
has very good coverage according to the CDC. Remember the flu mist, a nasal spray, is also available for
those who prefer this method.
The clinic needs donations of sweat pants and zip up sweatshirts!
