M&S Enabled Analysis Impacts
•
Conduct studies to support major decisions concerning acquisition and
the development of CONOPS that provide the best Army and Joint Space,
Missile Defense, High Altitude, and Cyberspace capabilities to current and
future warfighters.
 Business Case Analysis - Key enabler to 3-Star GOSC / VCSA reference
PATRIOT PAC-3 vs. MSE decision.
 Ballistic Missile Defense Planning Order - Informed Vice Chairman of
Joint Chiefs of Staff reference projected levels of protection and duration of
defense at varying Ballistic Missile Conditions (BMDCON).
 Real World Quick Turn Analysis - Direct Support to JFCC-IMD.
Conducting Command, Army, and Joint studies that
impact today, tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow

What’s Unique about
All the Domains?
• Cyberspace: unbounded,
virtual, impacts all others
Space
• Space: only bounded at
atmosphere, unbounded out
Air
• Air: bounded, 3D but
temporal
Sea
• Sea: bounded, 3D, surface +

Cyber M&S Gaps
• Lack of a Conceptual Framework and data sources for understanding Cyber
effects
•
Framework and data facilitates development of M&S Tools
•
Lack of specificity in communications associated with Cyber Warfare
•
Lack of well defined analytical baselines. The pace of network evolution is
fast and exacerbates the problem.
•
No explicit Cyber representation in campaign/mission level models
• Little or no capability or methodology to link Network/Engagement level
models to Campaign/Mission models.
•
Little mutual understanding and engagement between Cyber and analytical
communities.
•
Some engagement level tool cyber representation with promise but have
significant cost of ownership/training issues

Innovative Ventures Office (IVO)
• A government work force development activity conducted in close
cooperation with the University of Alabama-Huntsville (UAH)
• Current projects include improving network tools to enable better access to
space and aerial layer GIS data
• IVO may be able to provide data products for your projects through your
government sponsors
• Always looking for meaningful research topics that most importantly
challenge the students and might have the potential to improve how DOD
does business
• Examples include:
– Students support the development and sustainment of geospatial information systems
used by military and civilian first responders
– Students supported development of prototype decision support tools for NORAD
• We have benefitted by our ability to leverage the AMRDEC program
Students Working at the Army in Parallel (SWAP) and believe it is as an
opportunity that more organizations should explore
