H O M A G E TO THE SQUARE
The work of Josef Albers shaped New York designer Sara
Story's treatment of Greystone's grand living room, which
features a 1969 screen print by the German-born artist,
along with w o r k s by Louise Fishman, Ron Gorchov and
Juan UsIe. "I'd seen an Albers show at The Morgan Library
& Museum three years ago, and it made me want to play
with color theory, forms and geometry," she says. "The
juxtaposition of color and shape in this space is motivated
by Albers and his use of color palettes and their interplay
with forms." Within the small vestibule at the entrance to
the space. Story introduced a contemporary architectural
e l e m e n t by building a rectangular lacquer box. "It
compresses the feeling as you first enter the room," she
says. "Then you step out and have 20-foot-high ceilings."
At the end of the box is the Albers work. Throughout, there
are singular pieces, such as a coffee table by Aurelien
Gallet a n d a m a r b l e - a n d - b r o n z e c o n s o l e by Achille
Salvagni, along with creations by two other favorite artists,
including a Peter Lane sideboard faced in blue ceramicrelief panels and David Wiseman's intricate Lattice Ribbon
dining table in cast and poured bronze. A contemporary
art collector w h o studies how museum and gallery shows
are curated. Story believes the use of negative space can
transform a room. "Here, there are three seating areas, so
you can all be together, but there's also space in between,"
she says. "You can have a collection of three pieces
together, but there's always enough space for you to let
something have a moment. I love color, I love pattern, I
love energy, but I also think it's nice to have serenity and
peacefulness and not have a room look like a furniture
showroom. An interior should always unfold for you. It's like
a j o u r n e y You can always add. You can always collect."

When Brian Paquette b e g a n contemplating his design
for what was originally a second-floor boy's b e d r o o m at
Greystone, he stepped back a few decades, imagining a
1960s California getaway for sisters Jacqueline Kennedy
Onassis and Lee Radziwill. "Jackie and Lee forgo going to
Newport, Rhode Island, and instead head West," he recounts,

on the East Coast with the easy California lifestyle, Paquette
saw the design as an opportunity to merge ideas from his
own childhood in Newport with the more contemporary work
he does from his home base in Seattle. Working with a small
group of longtime vendors, such as Lawson-Fenning and
Zak+Fox, he relied on "low and lounge-y" seating arranged
in two areas. "This is where Jackie and Lee entertain, read
a book, hang out," he says. A painting made for the room by

PORTE COCHERE A N D S O U T H TERRACE
Natasha Baradaran has spent much of her life between Los
Angeles and Italy, so when she was searching for inspiration
for Greystone's porte cochere, she didn't have to look far.
"It reflects the Italian way of living, their zest for life and the
overall timeless style." the designer says. But she made
sure the design w o u l d also celebrate the ease of life in
Southern California. Though the space functions as an entry,
Baradaran established plenty of opportunities for guests to
linger with furnishings from her second furniture collection,
such as a sofa upholstered in an abstracted horizontal
pattern of three fabrics, a center table and a pair of X-base
consoles. "There's also a lot of unlacquered brass, which is
very Italian 1970s," Baradaran says. To anchor the space, the
designer's palette mixes terra cotta with grays, greens and
white. Baradaran also selected a variety of textures, such as
lacquered goatskin—"It's very '50s/'60s Italian," she s a y s —
and a wallcovering made from silk and raffia that adorns the
faux panels between the limestone columns. For the south
terrace, the designer selected furnishings from Frontgate that
are light in color "It allows the architecture, which is such a
strong element there, and the view to really shine," she says.
