Suicide/ Suspicious Incident
Location: Royal Floridian Resort, 51 South Atlantic Avenue
Date and Time: Monday July 28, 2014
On Monday, July 28, 2014, at approximately 4:33 am, Ormond Beach Police responded
to the Royal Floridian Resort in reference to a suspicious person pulling on door handles.
Upon arrival, OBPD officers were briefed by security officers that they observed a white
– male subject, loitering in the game room. When security walked into the game room,
the male quickly left. Security then discovered that a closet had been broken into and
wine was stolen. Security added that they last saw the male on the sixth floor, pulling on
doors.
OBPD officers went up to the sixth floor, but were unable to locate the subject. The
officers then went up to the seventh floor, where they saw the male sitting down drinking
the wine. When the male saw the officer, he pulled out a small black knife. As the
officers were giving the male commands to drop the knife, the male turned away from
them, ran down the hallway and jumped off the balcony. The male was pronounced dead
by Ormond Beach Fire Department paramedic. Found inside the deceased male’s wallet
was a vague suicide note.
The deceased male subject has been identified as Dean O’Hara, 50 from Cape Canaveral,
Florida. Next of kin has been notified.
