Mary’s Shelter received the
Site of the Year Award
at the Real Alternatives Conference held in
March. The Board and staff were honored to
receive such high recognition. “This award
reaffirms our commitment to providing the
highest quality services to expectant mothers
and their children. But truly they are the
ones who deserve an award for making the
commitment to improving their lives and
creating a better future for their children”.
– Danielle Monahan, Assistant Director
Where are they now?
Sandy (CGC 2013) moved into an apartment program
through Sixth Street Shelter. While there, Sandy has been
working and taking classes at Lehigh Carbon Community
College. She and her son will soon move into their own
apartment and she will continue to work and go to school.
Sandy says that Mary’s Shelter Cay Galgon Center still feels
like home to her and she often comes back to volunteer.
Janet (CGC 2014) already had a beautiful little girl and was pregnant with her second when
she came to the Cay Galgon Center. Though only with us for a few short months, Janet worked
her way through the Career Force program, earning money for her uniforms and shoes for
school. After having her baby, Mary’s Shelter paid for her to take a nurse’s aide course. Soon
after, Janet left for a transitional program through New Bethany Ministries and is working as a
CNA. She hopes to be in her own apartment very soon.
Brooke (CGC 2013) came to us as a mother of a toddler and pregnant with twins. Over the
course of a year, she gave birth to the twins, worked part-time, completed her schooling at
Metro Beauty Academy, and secured full-time employment. She moved out to her own
apartment and continues to visit the Cay Galgon Center weekly.
Samantha (Home 2006) Mother of twin boys
Ayden and Ayven, bought a home in April 2015!
Sam continues to enjoy her active boys while
working and serving in the Army Reserves. Sam
still visits Mary’s Home and volunteers when she
has time. She even helped deliver Christmas gifts
to community clients last year.
Adianette (Shelter 2008) Graduated from
RACC with her degree in Education. Adianette
left Mary’s Shelter when her baby was only
2 months old because an apartment became
available in subsidized housing. Parenting and
working full-time meant taking classes part-time
and a longer time to get her degree, but as she
says, “I finally did it!”
LEHIGH VALLEY— CAY GALGON CENTER
Volunteer Appreciation Day
The 4th Annual Diaper Drive
run by our wonderful partner
Weyerhaeuser’s Distribution
Center in Easton and their
Diaper Drive coordinator Kimara Lovelace yielded an incredible
33,000 diapers, an increase of almost 10,000 diapers from last year!
Half was shared with the Sixth Street Shelter. Thank you to all who
participated and a special thanks to Kimara for all her hard work.
With such an amazing result, we have decided to make the whole
month of March 2016 Our Diaper Drive Month! This is a great way
for all schools, women’s groups, Girl Scout troops, Boy Scouts,
Church groups and small businesses...really anyone, to help us by
holding a collection during the month of March.
Special Thanks to:
CGC celebrates volunteers with a special dinner and social time.
Dodgeball – We have set the date, place and time! Our first
ever Community Dodge Ball Tournament will take place on
Sunday, September 27th at the ESA sports complex in Emmaus,
Pa. Our hope is to bring family, friends and our community
together to learn more about MSCGC while enjoying a spirited
game of Dodge Ball. Details on how to register for the event or on
how to become a sponsor for the event are available on our website,
www.marysshelter.org.
Mother’s Day – Thank you to St. Thomas More Youth
Ministry and Gwyn Baker who worked to prepare and serve a
beautiful Mother’s Day dinner to the residents. One resident
commented that she had never had someone prepare and serve her
food before. An additional thank you to the generous donors who
brought special gifts for all the residents for that special day.
All our volunteers who make it possible for the girls to go to
school, appointments, and many other things that they would not be
able to do without our loving babysitters.
Mr. Voloshen who has worked tirelessly fixing broken doors, sinks,
putting up shelves, painting, and fixing furniture. These are just
some of the things he does for us on a weekly basis. A big thank
you from the staff and residents.
Thank you to our super volunteer who so kindly donated new porch
furniture. The residents are loving their renewed outside space.

The Life Ad... A full page “Life Ad” appeared in the Reading
Eagle in January. Mary’s Shelter is grateful to have received
$12,074.30 from this Pro-Life endeavor. The funds are designated
for program services; assisting the moms and babies that reside
at Mary’s Shelter. We appreciate the dedication of Terry Dugan,
and the Life Ad Committees who support this project. For the first
time, an ad was placed in The Morning Call and $6,252 was raised
for the Cay Galgon Center. Special thanks to Tony Saldutti and
the Diocese of Allentown Office of Pro-Life Activities and Social
Concerns for this undertaking. And we extend a heartfelt thank you
to the numerous individuals and groups that were listed in the ad
for their unwavering faith and dedication to saving and changing so
many precious lives!

In April, volunteers from Mary’s Shelter gathered in celebration
of Volunteer Recognition Month with a dinner held at Mimmo’s
Restaurant. Volunteers and Board Members attended and enjoyed
a delightful dinner and dessert. Our small way of acknowledging
the dedicated volunteers for their countless hours of service
they provide by helping the residents with babysitting, tutoring,
fundraisers, bulk mailings, and anything else that may come up!
Thank you for your Commitment to Volunteerism and for “Making
a Difference” in the lives of so many!
Diocesan Collections... Last year $32,610.31 was donated
from 22 churches in the Allentown Diocese. These churches opted
to participate in a voluntary second collection in support of Mary’s
Shelter. This yearly collection helps Mary’s Shelter provide food,
clothing, housing, medications, counseling services, and safety for
the mothers and babies. On behalf of the young mothers and babies
—thank you! Your continued support means so much to so many!
Recently, four bedrooms and nurseries at Mary’s Home had a
“mini-makeover”. Thank you to all the volunteers who assisted
with this much needed project. All the taping, painting, and
cleaning, prior to the installation of the new carpeting, was no
small endeavor! We appreciate your commitment to completing
this project in a timely manner!
Gardening….Once again, Michael Schaeffer, Executive Chef
at Dan’s Restaurant, and Riverview Nursery have joined forces to
create self-sufficiency gardens at Mary’s Shelter. We are looking
forward to a bountiful harvest to use at Nutrition classes and share
with the community clients.
Sharing your talents…Thank you to
Kenda Beck for coordinating a Pampered Chef
catalog party through Katie Mast, Pampered
Chef Consultant. Over $1100 in products were
purchased and donated to Mary’s Shelter! Kenda also taught a life
skills cooking class. The chicken corn noodle soup was delicious
and enjoyed by the residents at Mary’s Shelter and Mary’s Home.
Rumor has it even the pasta was homemade! Thank you for sharing
your wonderful talent with our young mothers.
A special thank you... goes out to the Girl Scout Troops
and Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians and the parish family of
St. Columbkill Church in Boyertown who have completed collections
of much needed baby items over the past several years. Their
commitment to these projects each and every year helps Mary’s
Shelter provide supplies for all the families in our care. Thank you!
Kudos...to Stephanie Babiec who also instructed a life skills
class. The subject of this interactive class was on growing an herb
and vegetable garden. We appreciate your time and for supplying
everything necessary to start this garden at Mary’s Home.
The young moms and children enjoyed this project
very much and can’t wait to reap the benefits!
Thank you!
I just don’t know if I will ever be able to thank everyone enough for all that was done for me.
It was an incredible experience that I will never forget. I will also never forget each and every person who left
a handprint on my heart. It meant a lot to me. — Sara ’14
Mary’s Shelter’s 20th Annual Bowl-A-Thon was held on March 15 at Berks Lanes in Sinking Spring.
Nearly 500 adults and children participated this year. This event offers an opportunity for families,
friends, organizations, and businesses to not only support Mary’s Shelter, but to meet some of the
women who rely on and who are grateful for your support. Two top prizes for each of the
sessions was a $200 MasterCard donated by Heidi Wilson and the Holy Guardian Angels’
Youth Group! The top prize is awarded to the individual or group that raises the most
pledges in each session. St. Mary’s in Hamburg, won the top prize for the first session,
and Amy Bishop won the top prize for the second session. Congratulations to both!
Together, they raised $3383 for program services! We are so grateful to have as a part
of our “team” different groups such as families, businesses, churches, schools, and
youth groups who join us in our efforts to provide a safe comfortable home for the
young women and babies at Mary’s Shelter. This year’s bowl-a-thon photos can be
viewed at www.Facebook.com/MarysShelterOneMillionFriends. Don’t forget to
“Like” us and stay updated on all the latest activities at Mary’s Shelter!

Cay Galgon Center Third Anniversary Gala
The Third Anniversary Mary’s Shelter, Cay Galgon Center Gala took place on March 13th, 2015
at Brookside Country Club. Over 300 guests and our residents and their beautiful children were in
attendance. Our “Dessert Dash,” featuring over 35 desserts, was the hit of the evening! The event raised
$108,000.00 to support the educational and developmental programs at Mary’s Shelter. This year’s
honorees, Tom and M.J. Muller, have been devoted supporters of the the Shelter since the beginning.
The Fourth Anniversary Gala will be held at Brookside Country Club on Friday, March 11, 2016 when we will honor the Straccia,
Matt and Lieberman Families for their support and dedication to the MSCGC. Please mark your calendars for this very special event.
