Our partner Ultrabrand was rolling out a massive global marketing
campaign and website for Kylie Jenner’s Lip Kit. Kylie is arguably one of
the world's largest reality celebrities, with over 50 million followers on
social media, and a rapidly growing personal brand fueled by her role on
the hit reality show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians.
THE PROBLEM
Produce a global infrastructure that could handle Kylie’s 50 million
fans. Media Temple needed to implement a hosting environment that
could handle a traffic load of up to 20 million users in the website’s first
hours on the web's busiest day (Cyber Monday). Keeping the site online
and running smoothly during a massive global rollout was crucial in
ensuring no loss of revenue, media attention or agency/customer
satisfaction.

MEDIA TEMPLE‘S SOLUTION

Our team custom-built an ultra high-availability, auto-scaling solution
and provided Cyber Monday “day-of” monitoring. The environment
needed to be elastic, with an architecture that would support an initial
surge of traffic, followed by peaks and valleys where server
requirements could be scaled up and down based on demand. To ensure
we were ready, we exhaustively tested a set of contingencies to
counter any issues by building several scenario and traffic-load specific
copies of the website to stress-test prior to launch. Our CloudTech
team continued to tune the servers until the site successfully handled
MORE users than originally forecasted.
THE RESULT
The Kylie Lip Kit website went live on Cyber Monday with massive social
media and press coverage. Our team of cloud architects were on hand to
monitor the launch, ensuring the website and its servers maintained high
dependability throughout the day, as time zones shifted globally. Kylie’s Lip
Kit sold out within the first 36 minutes and our hosting environment kept
the site online, and promptly notified users once the product had sold out.
