The Quest for 100% Automated Trading Systems
I
started Nirvana Systems to develop a fully
automated Trading System—a system so
accurate, you could turn it loose to trade the
markets or have it alert you by cell phone to
interactively place and manage trades. I would call
such a system The Ultimate Trading Machine.
The “Software Robot”
In 1989 Frank Taucher, author of The SuperTrader’s
Almanac, conferred his Product of the Year Award to
our Software Robot called KLATU. It had the ability to
run other software from the outside, just like a person
would do. Rather than reinvent the wheel, I decided to
harness the analysis power of programs like MetaStock™
and TBSP™. In other words, use these programs to find
signals and then automate everything else.
The Nirvana Club is Born
Then an idea occurred to me, “Would our customers be
willing to partner with us?” We could create a club, charge
a membership fee, and apply the new funding to the
development of these advanced trading technologies. The
members would receive the products as they were created,
and the company would continue on the mission until a fully
automated Trading System called The Ultimate Trading
Machine was realized.
Since the Club was originally founded, we have enjoyed many
successes, with each building on the last. We have applied
significant resources to the very difficult problem of finding
Trading Systems that consistently beat the market (milestone
synopsis presented below). And I am proud of the fact that we
are now delivering profitable mechanical Trading Systems to
our members.
The Power of ARM
The OmniTrader Project
The only problem was the programs we were automating
weren’t powerful enough. We soon realized we were going
to have to create our own trading technology. In 1993 we
started the OmniTrader project, based on the Adaptive
Reasoning Model, or ARM for short.
OmniTrader is a giant leap forward in automated trading
technology. I continue to get letters from customers who
are amazed at how much it does and how little we charge
for it! But this first version of ARM still wasn’t quite
powerful enough for a fully automated Trading System.
I was able to run some experiments and concluded that
by applying specific market measurements and building
rules using a Genetic Algorithm, it should be possible to
determine the probability of a given signal being correct
based on specific combinations. We just needed resources
to devote to the research.
Our ARM technology is second to none in the trading
community. As the product has advanced, we have continued
to release new and more powerful Strategies to our members.
We also provide the same tools we use for our members to
experiment with. Many members have taken this technology
and either created their own Strategies or significantly
enhanced existing ones. Granted, not all members want to do
this, but the fact that the tools are open to all 2500+ members
means our research can move forward that much faster. We
have some very savvy people in the Nirvana Club.
Every year, we work to improve our ARM technology.
Last year, we added “Dynamic Training” so our Neural
Networks could be trained, validated, and tested over very
large amounts of data. This year, we added “Data Mining”
(see A.I. for Traders, page 6). We have also made many
technical advancements, such as the addition of crossvalidation network training. The resulting performance
gains have been phenomenal!

is not required to make money in the
markets, we believe these numbers are
achievable through the use of Artificial

In the graph below, we show Profit per Trade for
various values of Signal Score for one of our recently
trained Neural Networks, demonstrating the fact
that higher Signal Scores generate higher profit! It’s

A.I. for Traders!
Improving Strategies with ARM4
Artificial Intelligence has been used to
improve investment returns in hedge funds
and other proprietary trading shops for
a number of years. But never before has
this kind of technology been available to
individual traders.
We provide canned Networks for our Nirvana Club members to use, but
since members get the same tools we use, they can also create their own
proprietary Strategies. Here is the process:
ARM2 was first released to the Nirvana
Club in 1998. Since then the technology has
continued to improve year after year, leading
up to the ARM4 version members have
access to today.
· Existence of Price Gaps
· DMI Indicator
· Current Volatility
In 2010, we added Data Mining to our
Neural Network process, which dramatically
improved performance. In some cases we
are seeing the profits DOUBLE in our best
Strategies! (See article, next page.)
1. Identify Inputs
First, we identify Market Measurements or “Inputs” that we believe will
help predict a profitable signal. Here are some examples:
· CCI Indicator
· MACD Histogram Indicator
· Bollinger Bands · Distance from Moving Averages
· Candle Patterns · Differences in Price
2. Perform Data Mining
We then run a “Data Mining” pass on the Inputs and many bars of
price data to find those inputs that have the highest predictability.

How Does It Work?
As a part of our Nirvana Club research,
we developed a Strategy Block called “NN
Score.” Members who want to train their
own Neural Networks can readily do so,
because they have access to the same tools we
use (the sidebar, Improving Strategies with
ARM4 to the right explains the process).
3. Train a Neural Network
We then use historical data to train our ARM4 Neural Network
component so it learns to find predictive relationships in the data.
But you don’t have to do this because
we provide pre-trained Networks for our
members! Just drop an existing NN Score
block into a Strategy and run the ToDo List.
In most cases, profit per trade will increase—
especially if the signals in the Strategy are
similar to the signals that were used to
train the Network. This is the case with the
Strategies discussed on the next page.
Millions have been invested in the
development of ARM4, which is by far
the most powerful Artificial Intelligence
technology ever created for traders. As a
result of recent advances, we are now seeing
80% Hit Rates in many of our Strategies—
the first performance goal for The Ultimate
Trading Machine.

At the end of this process, we have an ARM4 Neural Network (NN-Score
Component) that can be dropped into ANY Strategy with similar kinds of
signals to improve Hit Rate and Profit per Trade.

To the right is a good example of how
ARM4 improves the profitability of
OmniTrader and VisualTrader Strategies.
Double the Profits!
The T3 Strategies find short-term reversal signals.
The T3 Strategy Suite is one of our best
non-NSP Strategy collection, generating
consistent profits by trading reversal signals.
The first chart shows T3 signals on Google.
T3 does a great job of finding potential
reversal points, but we can see that the
Strategy fired a few unprofitable Long signals
in the downturn that began in January.
We trained a Neural Network using inputs
that are good at predicting reversals, and
applied it to our T3 Strategies. When filtered
by NN Score, the unprofitable signals were
filtered out and the overall profitability of the
Strategy improved. With a Score Cutoff of
60, Profit per Trade more than DOUBLED,
going from 0.60% to 1.5%. Increasing the
score to 70 generated even higher numbers
(with fewer trades) as shown in the table to
the lower right.

This NN Score component can be “dropped
into” any Strategy that has similar signals,

e have been building and refining

In 2010, the Data Mining improvements
we made to ARM4 have led to further
performance gains. We now provide over 20

Artificial Intelligence on
Chart Patterns
Our ARM4 Stocks Strategies demonstrate
over 70% accuracy in forward test data. But
by far, the most significant advancement on
Stocks has been the development of Chart
Pattern signals filtered with ARM4. Nirvana
Systems has been a pioneer in advanced
Chart Pattern Recognition.
ARM4 Trendlines on Mastercard
The charts to the right illustrate several signals
from our ARM4 Trend Line and Support
Strategies. We have Networks trained for each

some of which are showing Signal Accuracies
(hit rates) in excess of 80%.1
Special Strategies for Futures
For our Futures Level members, we have
created ARM4 Strategies based on
continuous futures contracts. ARM4
works well on Futures, as Chart Patterns
within individual contracts repeat so often.
We often see 70% to 80% Signal Accuracies

The NSP Strategies:

NSP Strategies are special products
we have been developing for several
years. The goal of NSP is to generate
consistent, long term gains. So far,
the result of this research is two NSP
Strategies, NSP-33 and NSP-41.
NSP-33 Trend Follower
NSP-33 was developed to find the most
profitable entry points in a developed
trend, right in the vicinity of a higher
low or lower high. The chart to the
right depicts typical NSP-33 signals.
NSP-41 Reversal Trader
NSP-41 is another End-of-Day Stocks
Strategy based on the “Reversion to
Mean” (RTM) principle. When markets
get overbought or deeply oversold,
they often return to where they started.
NSP-33 Signal on AMLN. This is typical of the kind of signals NSP-33 fires—new moves
within an existing trend.
Our research team has spent hundreds
of hours studying the RTM principle,
and NSP-41 is our best Strategy using it.
