05
Sir John Deane’s is a community made up of vibrant, curious and ambitious students and teachers, all of
whom have a collective investment in academic success. We asked some of our current students what they
like about coming to College, and here’s what they said.
“I would describe the college

PUTTING YOU FIRST
SETTLING IN
The sixth form has a mentoring service, which
involves trained volunteers from the Upper Sixth
helping other students settle into College life.
It’s based on the idea that people often learn
best from those who are a few steps further
along the road they wish to travel.
The two years you will spend in sixth form will be amongst
the most important of your life. Your programme of
study will help shape your career and will support you in
making decisions that will set you on your future path.
We’re here for you, every step of the way.
When you join us – it may seem like a big step from the familiar
surroundings of school but we will help you to settle in quickly.
We always put you first.
EQUALITY, DIVERSITY,
INCLUSION
You’ll share the responsibility of preparing for and meeting exam
and coursework deadlines, and we will give you outstanding
guidance and support to help develop your skills. Teachers will
expect you to be hard-working and focused on your studies,
and there will be many opportunities to stretch yourself with a
blend of academic and personal choices.
SJD is committed to demonstrating equality of
opportunity and mutual respect. We positively
encourage all of our students to achieve the
best they can.
SJD has a dedicated, additional learning support
team to help you with your studies. They are
there to give regular one-to-one support to
students with specific learning difficulties or
disabilities. They also help all students with any
learning challenges, ranging from planning and
writing essays to problems of organisation or
time-management.
You’ll have a Personal Tutor who will be your adviser, monitor
your progress, discuss your career ambitions and prepare you
for life after SJD.
We know how important it is for you to achieve the grades you
want and will be there for you, always ready to give you praise
and recognition.

EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION
EPQ is an optional qualification taken in the Upper Sixth that is highly regarded by universities
and shows that you can excel in independent study and research. Pursuing a project in a field
linked to an area of your academic interest can help your university applications.
WHAT WILL I STUDY?
The great thing about this qualification
is that you get to choose a topic
area that you wish to study – this
can be linked to an A Level subject,
something you wish to study at
university or something that interests
you personally.
This will lead to you producing a
final piece of work which can be
an extended essay, report of an
investigation, performance or artefact
(e.g. a short film, website or artwork).
To gain the EPQ you will need to carry
out independent research and with
the help of a tutor, plan, manage and
review your project.

I have completed the EPQ which has
taught me research skills and how

there is a really friendly atmosphere.”

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES?
WHERE MIGHT IT LEAD?
The co-curricular activities depend on
what you choose to study.
This course allows students to stretch
themselves beyond the curriculum.
Students have studied areas as
diverse as genetic screening, offender
profiling,
artificial
intelligence,
architecture, hurricanes and fashion.
The EPQ is valued by universities
because it shows that you are capable
of independent study and in-depth
research – something that is a big part
of Higher Education study. It attracts
additional UCAS points (up to 70 points
for an A* grade).

Art and Design is an exciting subject that encourages creative self-expression. SJD teachers
and students work together in our state-of-the-art studios to create truly stunning artwork
in a dynamic and supportive atmosphere.
WHAT WILL I STUDY?
Drawing is an essential part of the
course and you will be encouraged to
explore the work of professional artists
to influence and inspire you.
In your first year of study the
emphasis is on learning about new
materials, techniques and processes,
printmaking, painting and sculpture
being key areas of investigation.
Throughout the second year students
will work much more independently
and studies may well be based on
39
a wide range of experiences and
interests using the skills that have
been developed.
You will be required to produce
an extended unit of coursework,
accompanied by a written and
illustrated ‘journal’ on a subject and
artist of your choice, this isworth 60%
of your marks. There is an extended
15 hour examination at the end of the
course accounting for the remaining
40%.
CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES?
WHERE MIGHT IT LEAD?
As well as gallery visits, some students
take part in the Young Artists in Tuscany
residential and the department runs
a three-day residential drawing and
sculpture course. Critical study visits
abroad are offered with students
visiting Paris, Berlin, Barcelona and
New York in the past four years.
Students go to university to study
for a degree in textile design, fashion
design, illustration, interior design,
automotive
design,
animation,
photography, fine art, architecture,
landscape architecture, theatre design,
jewellery, graphic design, film and
television, furniture design, ceramics

Explore how science works in the ‘real world’ with this fascinating course that covers aspects
of biology, chemistry and physics, including blood pressure and hospital imaging techniques
and detecting contaminated drug compounds.
WHAT WILL I STUDY?
Applied Science is ideal for students
who are skilled at coursework
assessment rather than examinations.
You will study a mixture of biology,
chemistry and physics. Topics are wideranging and include learning about
how energy is transferred in homes,
power stations, blood pressure,
measuring the health of organs such
as your heart and lungs and health and
safety.
You will learn about practical
techniques used in medical pathology
and forensic science, to analyse
chemical compounds.
The coursework that you produce will
be worth two thirds of your overall
grade. There is an examination for the
remaining third of the marks. You will
need to be well organised and good at
meeting deadlines.
“The college is very supportive. In
the science department teachers put
on talks from people with different
scientific backgrounds and organise
trips to university science departments
to help give you experience. I hope to
study medicine at university.”

ECONOMICS
Economics helps you to understand how the world works. You’ll be challenged with ‘real life’
questions such as: Should Britain leave the EU? Are house prices too high? And why has the
UK’s share in world trade declined?
WHAT WILL I STUDY?
Economics is different from many A

studied it before.
During the course you will learn
about how competitive markets work,
economic efficiency and the global
economy. You will explore issues such
as, income and wealth inequality, the
impact of economic migrants on the
UK economy, the performance of the
UK economy in a European and global

Does the growth of large retail chains
conflict with the interests of the
consumer? An ageing population –
cause for celebration or concern? Is
the NHS sustainable?
“I have really enjoyed studying
economics and would like to go on
