Dear Friends,
We celebrate the Feasts of All Saints and All Souls
Day this Fall weekend. At this time of year we always
call to mind our departed loved ones, and all those who
have gone before us in the sure hope of the resurrection.
We mourn the loss of our loved ones, and yet we
celebrate our faith in the hope and glory of God which
we are all called to share. The star dust of who we are
physically, which scientists tell us
changes completely every seven
“Wherever we’re
years, mutates, grows, and changes
going after death, by some genetic principle, and finally
runs out of time according to the
we’ve already
principles of death and dying. We
begun to
see it all around us.
live there.”
And so at this time of year we
celebrate our faith in the spiritual
principle of life and love which transcends and goes
beyond time and space.
St. Paul reminds us in the second reading today:
“Are you unaware that we who were baptized into
Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?” ...so that,
just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of
the Father, we too might live a new life in His Spirit.
Wherever we’re going after death, we’ve already
begun to live there, and it began for us the moment we
were baptized. We entered and passed with Christ from
death to life in Baptism and we continue to make that
passage from death to life at every point we die to
ourselves, our selfishness and sin, and come to life in
selfless love. Through death comes life. We see it all
around us.
In the season of Fall, when things die so that they
may come to life in the Spring, we celebrate that eternal
spiritual principle revealed by Christ, echoed by
St. Francis, that “it is only in giving that we receive…
and in dying that we are born to eternal life.”
St. Francis understood the principles of nature and
the spiritual life very well. May these seasons of the
year, seasons of grace, help us to grow in our understanding of life and death, death and life. We celebrate
the lives of people who have gone before us in the sure
hope of the resurrection, now counted among the
immortals. We celebrate our faith in Jesus Christ!
Jesus said, “It is the will of the one who sent me,
that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but
that I should raise it on the last day...that everyone who
sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life,
and I shall raise them on the last day.”
God Bless and love you all,

BOOK OF LIFE
Stop by to Enter Names in Book of Life
There is a display in the Narthex to remember our beloved departed.
Next to the Easter Candle and the names of deceased parishioners from this
past year is a book for you to enter names of deceased loved ones. All
whose names are entered in this book will be prayed for in a special way
during the month of November.
Needed — Names of
People in the Military
We want to know the names of parishioners or names of family members who are in
the military and are currently deployed in the
Middle East. We would like to acknowledge
them and pray for them and their loved ones
at masses. Please contact the Liturgy Office
with this information, or email Angie Tuttle

November 9 — Dedication of the
Lateran Basilica in Rome
Another unique observance will interrupt
the sequence of Ordinary Time Sundays next
weekend at all masses. It is the solemnity of
the dedication of the St. John Lateran Basilica. This liturgy commemorates the dedication of this significant Church in Rome because it is the official cathedral church of the
Pope. This is where Pope Benedict conducts
his role as the bishop of Rome in addition to
his role as the shepherd of the universal
Church. The scriptures for next weekend are:
Ezekiel 47: 1-2, 8-9, 12; 1 Corinthians 3:9c11, 16-17; John 2:3-22
Thanksgiving Day Mass
Our Thanksgiving Day Mass will be
Thursday, November 27 at 9:00 a.m. Fr. Joel
will be the presider and the Youth Choir and
Spirit Song will be the music ministers. All
are invited to bring bread and wine that you
will use over the Thanksgiving holiday to this
mass to be blessed. After the liturgy you will
take home the items that you brought.

Pray For Our Parish
Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed
All Souls
O God,
source of life and goal of all creation,
through the prophet’s vision
you promised to destroy death forever,
and in the paschal mystery of Jesus,
the first fruits of all who have died,
you brought that promise to fulfillment.
For all the departed who found
life and light in Christ,
who took up the cross
and followed in Christ’s footsteps,
grant the fulfillment of their faith
and the banquet of life
and the joy of sharing in the salvation
for which they waited.
We ask this through our Lord
Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God for ever and ever.
Amen.

Soul Searchers
Soul Searchers will meet once a month to explore and discover truths in The Essential Writings of Christian Mysticism edited by Bernard McGinn. “The roots of the current interest in mysticism defy easy characterization. Such a widespread revival across many religious traditions is a complex phenomenon,” writes McGinn.
He believes one factor in this revival is “the way in which the mystics invite us to imagine and even to explore
an inner transformation of the self based on a new understanding of the human relation to God.” The October
discussion reading is Section Two, pp. 47-77.
The next meeting of Soul Searchers will be Saturday, November 8 from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m. in the Rectory
Basement. The text is available at Borders. Hand-outs are available in the pick-up drawer under “S”. Deacon
Will and Mary Maloney are group leaders. All are welcome to attend this monthly discussion group. Come
whenever your schedule allows and enjoy a thought provoking experience.
C.A.R.E. CORNER
Even Jesus himself was in need of healing.
Jesus was in need of mending for His broken
heart when His disciples abandoned Him in the
garden on the eve of His death and when Peter
denied Him. He needed comfort after Judas betrayed Him and turned Him over to the Roman
soldiers. He needed release from the physical
suffering He had to endure while hanging on the
cross. And mostly, Jesus needed relief from the
weight He bore for the sins of the world and for
the anguish that resulted when He felt separated
from His heavenly Father.
By becoming human, Jesus joined into all
those conditions that are universal to the human
experience. We all have doubts, discouragement, loneliness and suffering. What was Jesus
trying to teach us by enduring the same kinds of
trials and pain that we do? Perhaps He was trying to tell us that respite from suffering requires
the assistance of someone outside of ourselves.
Our human difficulties help to shine light on the
possibilities of God. Our problems reveal God’s
potential. Perhaps we might better understand
our need for God through the lens of our own
weakness.

FROM THE YOUTH MINISTER...
Harvest Sunday
November 16
In these economic times, the desperate need for
food is much more visible than ever. Our food pantry
and food pantries in our area are being taxed heavily.
Sadly, more and more children are present. Can you
imagine what it would be like to go home tonight and
there is no food? Then tomorrow there’s still no
breakfast or lunch? Imagine, if you will, that this continues for the next two or three days – nothing but
water. Now imagine how thankful, how incredibly
joy-filled you would be to receive, on that third day,
maybe a box of food, filled to the brim. That is what
Harvest Sunday is about.
I have challenged St. Thomas to collect 1,000
boxes of food – more than double what we have done
the past four+ years. I know we are up for the challenge, but who will help me and the teens? Start
spreading the word now, in your neighborhoods and
among your friends that the food drive is November
16. We can’t wait until the week before to begin making others aware of this opportunity – this necessity –
to share our resources to those who are starving.
Join with me, will you? Let us, together, bring
food to those who are hungry. Let us, together, help
the teens feel they are doing something worthwhile.
It starts at home and in our everyday attitude. Contact
me to become part of the Harvest Sunday team.
I don’t have much experience making routes, planning
such a large food drive, but I do have faith in the
shared wisdom and abilities of St. Thomas. There are
already several individuals willing to help, but we
need more. Let St. Thomas continue to be known for
not just doing the bare minimum, but going the distance – even maybe to talk to a neighbor we don’t
know just to tell them about the food drive. If, by
any chance, some of you may be suffering right now,
struggling to put food on your table, know help is
coming. We are coming. St. Thomas will collect
1,000 boxes of food. God bless you all!

Rwanda – He Chose to Remain
Some 170 people came to St. Thomas last Sunday
afternoon to hear Carl Wilkins talk about his experience during the 1994 genocide. He is the former head
of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency International in Rwanda and was the only American
who chose to remain in the country. A highlight of his
presentation was a visit from a Rwandan family
(parents and four children) that lived through the
genocide and have been living in the US for the last
year.

Prayers Reach Carlos Through Prayer Shawl
A high school boy named Carlos is currently
St. Thomas the Apostle
in Mexico. He has lived in the US since his mother
Naperville, IL
brought him here when he was a very young child.
USA
He is undocumented. He went to Mexico to appear
for an appointment with the US Consulate to be
approved (or not) for entry into the US as an immigrant.
When he graduates from high school, he plans to join
the US Air Force.
There is always a real risk when an undocumented individual returns to Mexico
for such a meeting at the US Consulate. If they do not approve, he would not be
allowed to return to his family here. The first step in Mexico is a medical check-up.
There was a spot on his chest X-Ray. They needed to test him for TB, and regardless
of the result, he would need to remain in Mexico for 10 weeks before his
US Consulate meeting.
Before his journey began, when he and his family were praying in our
chapel, he was given a Prayer Shawl knitted by our Prayer Shawl Ministry.
His mother called to tell us of the medical test news. Through her tears she
told how she wished she was there with him, but what gave her peace was
what Carlos had told her. ”Don’t worry Madre because I have the Prayer Shawl
over my shoulders, and when I do that I feel as if your arms are hugging me.”
Carlos called again when he learned the tests were negative for TB.
This time he said that his Prayer Shawl “is God in one prayer” and that he
senses the love from his family and from the people of St. Thomas and feels
supported when he has it around his shoulders.
Carlos is still in Mexico awaiting his meeting with the US Consulate.

so, we have a need for additional Reception Ministers to
staff the reception desk in the Gathering Area during the
Sunday liturgies year around except for holiday weekends.
In this role, you would join the existing receptionists in
a rotation, so that you would “work” every few weeks –
depending upon the number of ministers who step forward –
from about 8 a.m. to noon each time. The tasks include
answering phones and answering in-person questions, or
referring the questioners to those who can answer them, and
keeping an eye on the security monitors. You can also help
others solve problems with directions and insights, and get
help from custodial staff when needed.
Training will be provided from one of the experienced
reception ministers on a Sunday prior to your scheduled
start date. For information, call Gerry Czerak weekdays at
355.8980x106 or [email protected], or Pat Berkhout
weeknights at 355.8980x119. To sign up, check box #951k
in the Invitation to Ministry booklet or at our website at
www.stapostle.org.
