TEAM MOUNT BEAUTY NEWS
Talking with Pete
A
s part of our series of maintaining a
high profile for our local mountain
bike club, recently our ‘Ace’ journo,
Charlie Brown went out and caught up
with Peter Panozzo.
CB: So Pete you’ve been involved with TMB
pretty much from the start eh?
PP: Yeah, we’ve been involved for about 25
years or so, around the time the club started.
It was called ‘The Highland Riders Of Bogong.’
I think Bernie might have explained that and
the reason for the name change in his interview.
I remember in 1991 or ’92 we decided to run
a race up at Falls Creek, I think we called it
‘The White Mud Classic.’ Most of the other
races around the place were being held at
Thredbo so we thought we’d run one up at
Falls. We built a course and got it all ready and
were very excited - it was coming up to the
Queen’s Birthday weekend but we didn’t think
would be a problem because normally they
didn’t get snow on the opening. Well on the
Thursday night they got snow, and quite a bit,
which meant that they had to get down to the
business of opening the resort so we were left
high and dry with-out a race venue. We had to
come back down to Mount Beauty and very
quickly get a course ready - but all our bunting
and that sort of stuff was buried under the
snow but we somehow managed to pull it off
and it all went pretty well and the club and
racing just sort of went from there.
I remember the first downhill we had, which
was up at Big Hill, we had 60 riders and we
thought Wow! 60 riders that’s great but we had a
problem with getting the riders up the hill, I had
an old motorbike trailer so I made a bit of a rack
to carry 6 or 8 bikes per load, which worked for
that race but if we wanted to run more races we
needed to get more bikes up at a time which lead
me to making up some racks that fit on the back
of some of the local farm trucks. The challenge

was to make a rack that would fit all different
styles of bikes, that’s when I came up with the
idea of the racks with the slots that you put the
peddle shank into, It worked well but the trucks
were high, hard to load and pretty rough on the
bikes. It was then that I went to Tony Gentile for
a bit of help and eventually adapted the rack to
the trailers that you see being used now.
CB: Oh wow, so you pretty much invented
the design of that system on the trailers,
the pedal mounted racks? Did you get
much use out of the trailers?
PP: Oh yeah, they had a big impact on
mountain biking. Previously all the races
were run at ski hills because they could use
the chairlifts to get up but then when we
had these trailers it meant that you could
start running races elsewhere, then other
people started building them as well.
Those trailers have been good, over the years
they’ve been hired out all over the place,
Canberra and Melbourne clubs for their races as
well some of the Victorian schools and colleges.
CB: They are such a simple design.
PP: Yeah, I also designed those racks for the
downhill bikes for back of your car. The
trailers were part of the reason why we were
able to hold the nationals here.
CB: Because of the trailers?
PP: Yep, because we could get the riders
and their bikes up to the top.
At the start of the club we were really lucky; there
was Bernie, Gerry, Myself, my brother David and
between us we had a lot of local knowledge and
were all practical people, keen to get things done
and that’s how it all came about, the old saying,
“Necessity is the mother of invention, when
something had to be done we’d get it done.
CB: Is there anything else that stands out in
your mind regarding the start of the club?
PP: Yeah the fact that the four families all
worked so well together, Gerry and Jenny,

CB: And the women were all fairly
supportive?
PP: Oh yeah, the kids were the ones that
were coming up through the ranks so we as
parents were all into it and involved.
CB: Any thing you’d particularly like to
see for the club?
PP: I’d love to see Mount Beauty hold
another Nationals event, that’d be good and
maybe a Big Hill downhill reunion. Haha.
Team Mt Beauty has made Mount Beauty
what it is as far as mountain biking
goes. It’s such a great venue to hold races
at, everything close, there’s plenty of
reasonably priced accommodation, food
and it’s a great destination. A lot of the
other race venues are quite a way out of
town and away from everything but here
we’re right amongst everything.
CB: Thanks for your time Pete. •

MUSIC FESTIVAL
Music Festival
K
ylie Esler of Big Bright Photos
(Google it) summed it up in
conversation on Sunday. “The
Music Festival committee have been
pushing up-hill all the way - and yet
have pulled off a magnificent Festival.
They should all be congratulated.” And
your journo could not agree more.
Venues - we have to find venues. Cranky
Charlies is now a temporary library;
the Community Centre is a temporary
Kinder/Toy Library/Playgroup facility
- and the Club - well it’s shut!
Fortunately the Alpine Shire came
on board and have been a great help
- with temporary marquees erected at
different locations around town. The
only problem with a marquee is that
they are not real sound-proof and when
the crowd is ‘going off ’ to The Pigs on
Saturday night - the sound of people
enjoying themselves carried a bit - but it
is only for one night in the year!
The weather. Yes, well it kept everyone
on their toes. •

Saturday in May. However, with a return to
the normal date, event organisers are hoping to
top the 500 mark again in 2016.
Chair of the organising committee, Ian
Franzke, said it looks like being another great
year in 2016, “The event is well organised
for logistics so all participants just have to
prepare to enjoy the event and reach the goals
that they have set. With the timing in May
it is usually perfect conditions for running so
all of the events are enjoyed by everyone.”
Prizes will be awarded for the category winners
and overall place getters but the main prize
is a new mountain bike from Rocky Valley
Bike and Ski for one lucky draw participant
in one of the events. You have to be at the
presentations if you to win the bike so it is a
great opportunity to have some refreshments

And so it is with local resident Mary Jones whose grand-daughter Aislin Jones has been

According to Simon King in The

could be Australia’s youngest Olympian

WATER SECURITY PROJECT
Falls Creek
O
ver the years Falls Creek Village
has suffered periodic poor water
quality from the Rocky Valley
Lake surface water supply. This typically
manifests as:
1. Suspended fine particles which migrate
through to the village network and accumulate
in low flow areas. High flow episodes, such
as activation of a local hydrant, then dislodge
sediment build up creating a poor water quality
episode for the residents near the area. This is
compounded by the off-take for the dam which
is situated at a low point in the wall, increasing
the sediment loading.
2. Precipitation of iron content during
summer. As the water temperatures increase
anddecrease in the dam the water is subject
to an inversion current. This mixing episode
results in dissolved iron content precipitating
from the water and moving into the village
network. The result is a brown tinge to the
water and an unpleasant metallic taste.
In order to address these items FCRM
investigated two principle options:

MOTORING TIPS
Regular Servicing
Our car is like our body.
We must look after it
all of the time - not just
when something fails.
Regular servicing will identify when
items are wearing (brake pads, tyres,
filters, hoses etc). These and other
wearing items can be replaced before
they let us down on the road.
Imagine discovering (too late) that your
Brake Pads had worn out - just as you’re
heading for the tree.
Regular servicing is important for the
good health of your vehicle - and for your
good health and safety!

1. Filtration systems to remove sediment
and iron content.
2. Use of groundwater supply.
The most cost effective solution to
address the requirements was found to be
switching to a groundwater supply. Falls
Creek is in the enviable position of having
significant groundwater resources which
flow in the underground rock fractures
and are a geotechnical feature of the area.
Testing of the groundwater has shown it is
of very high purity - so high that it has a
pH very close to pure rainwater.
“Falls Creek is in the enviable
position of having significant
groundwater resources...”
To access the groundwater supply Resort
Management has constructed a 60m
vertical bore with pumping, accumulation
and pH adjustment infrastructure. The
maximum extraction capacity of the bore
is 1ML/day which meets the current peak
daily consumption rate for the village over
the winter period.
In addition to addressing the water
quality requirements for the village there
was a deficiency in the water volumes
available for structure fire suppression. In
the event of a major lodge fire requiring
use of multiple hydrants, the original
storage volume of 1.5ML would be quickly
depleted and would impact general water
consumption in the village. In order to
address this situation the water supply volume
to the village has been doubled to 3.0ML
with installation of another bulk storage
tank. Dual tanks also provides operating
redundancy for maintenance purposes.
Doubling our water storage capacity to 3 Mega Litres
has huge benefits for the village and the community. Pic
- Courtesy FCRM.
The project has also focussed on improving
operational monitoring and response for
FCRM by including the following items:
• All isolation valves and instruments
have been moved to a plant shed for
easy access at all times of the season
(previously these were buried, sometimes
under a metre of snow!)
• Upgrade to electrical supply including
UPS and genset capabilities to keep the
plant live during power outages.
• Improvement to lightning strike
mitigation.
• Upgrade to instrument and monitoring
capabilities via the FCRM SCADA
platform.
• Operational improvements and system
upgrade to the UV treatment plant to
improve reliability of this critical system.
• Reduction in geotechnical risk above the
village via deep fissure de-watering.
This project aligns specifically with
the Minister for Environments specific
objective on water security.

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK Summer 2016 Edition FOURTEEN
WATER SECURITY PROJECT
WWTP Upgrade Project
During the winter of 2012 the Falls
Creek Waste Water Treatment Plant
experienced a major fault in Tank 4
effectively shutting down 75% of the
processing capacity in the plant. This
breakdown coincided with one of the
busiest winter periods where daily
inflows can be as high as 1ML. This
incident highlighted the need to address
a critical lack of redundancy in the
system to mitigate the effects of such an
occurrence in the future.
In order to address this FCRM has now
removed redundant tanks and installed
a new 800kL Sequence Batch Reactor
concrete tank, effectively providing a fully
redundant pathway for waste treatment.
Not only will this provide the security
required for the operation of the plant,
it will also facilitate yearly maintenance
on critical infrastructure and provides a
modern, efficient processing method.
The project has also addressed a number of
other operational risks with the following
changes:
• Geotechnical reinforcement of upper
batter area in the plant
• Upgraded water and hydrant supply for
this critical area
• Upgrade to UPS, instrument and
monitoring capabilities via the FCRM
SCADA platform.
• Replacement of chlorination system with
UV treatment for final discharge
• Removal of sludge de-watering operation
- this will greatly increase the useable space
available in this area.
This project aligns with the Minister
for Environments objective to minimise
environmental impact by ensuring the
risk of a discharge to the environment is
substantially mitigated.
Ed Note. These are the types of projects that
go on out of the public eye so to speak - and
yet are vital to the continued improvement
to the village for residents and visitors all
year round. Well done to all concerned. •

Damian Mind Master
A
t the young age of 36 Damien has
been an entertainer and involved with
hypnosis for the past 18 years and for
the past five years has been wowing audiences
across the country with his corporate stage
hypnotist show.
As a wide eyed teenager Damien began working
closely with his very good friend Australia’s
leading stage Hypnotist Steven Spellmaster,
immediately after leaving school in 1996.
After 12 months Damien developed a passion
and a keen interest for anything to do with
hypnosis and entertainment.
It would be a long time before Damien
took to the stage himself. He stayed close
to Steven Spellmaster and for over 12 years
studied and learned the skills that would
transform him into one of the best and sort
after corporate entertainers in the country.
Steven has since seen his show countless times
and has laughed and said “He is a young
replica of me!”
Damien Mindmaster is also a qualified
professional clinical Hypnotherapist too
- specialising in sports motivation and
weight reduction. Personal fitness is a big
part of Damien’s lifestyle and he revels in
helping shape peoples’ minds and bodies.
Many of his clients have achieved goals way
beyond their expectations with Damien’s
hypnotherapy and guidance.
High class, outrageously funny, Damien
Mindmaster will be putting on a fabulous
show for the Dederang Mount Beauty
Football and Netball Club this coming
Saturday night, the 7th of May at the Mount
Beauty Community Centre. Tickets at Sassy
