Slide Show held this past Fourth of
July weekend at the Brookside Show
Park. Your WCRHA Board of Directors worked very hard for nearly a
year to put on this grand event. Many
thanks go to each Board Member
who worked many hours to put on
this show for you. From the initial
concept brought forward last year,
to the planning, the logistics and the
actually running of the event, your
Board of Directors hope you had a
great time and positive experience.
We are always looking for ways to
improve our shows, so your input and
ideas are always welcome.

President's Letter....from page 1
It has always been such a pleasure to be a part of this
great organization. We are a family. It always strikes me
how wonderful all the members are and how well we get
along and have fun with each other. From talking to many
other folks both within and outside the reining community,
it is apparent that WCRHA is fairly unique in this regard.
I was discussing this aspect with a guest of our Star
Spangled Slide show who agreed with me that WCRHA
is the friendliest NRHA affiliate. He went on to state that
WCRHA shows are his favorite shows to attend each year.
He considered us all friends and looks forward to coming to
our shows each year. What a compliment to receive!
I want to take this opportunity at this time to thank
our many sponsors whose generosity tremendously helps
WCRHA throw the best shows possible for our membership. Please take a moment to thank the following people
and businesses through an e-mail, phone call or note to
thank them: Booth Ranches, Gilson Performance Horses,
Carr Performance Horses, Merial, Ron & Sally Hoppe,
Boot Barn, and Premier Equine Center. As President of
WCRHA, I want to personally thank each and every one
of our sponsors as well. Without your generosity, WCRHA
would not be the great NRHA affiliate that we are today.

As many of you know, I recently attended the NRHA
Affiliate Summit and the General Membership Meeting
held during the NRHA Derby in Oklahoma City in June. It
was a great experience. I met many of the NRHA officers
including the Commissioner, Gary Carpenter. Commissioner Carpenter and I had a wonderful conversation
about the Affiliate program and WCRHA in particular. During my conversation with the Commissioner, it
became quite clear to me that WCRHA is looked upon
with very high regard by himself and the rest of the
NRHA staff. I am excited to announce that Commissioner Carpenter and Shianne Megel, who is in charge
of the Affiliate Programs within NRHA, will both be
attending our Northwest Regional Affiliate Finals and
WCRHA Year End/Futurity Show.
While back at the Affiliate Summit in Oklahoma
City, there was a question and answer period for the
affiliate representatives in attendance to ask for answers
to some of the challenges they are facing within their
respective affiliates. Now, I must say that I was rather
surprised by some of the challenges facing some of
the other affiliates that WCRHA is not challenged with.
It was quite clear that they have some very real hurdles to
overcome when they put on their shows and with their day
to day operations. Whether it is financial, sponsorships,

staffing, or finding volunteers, some of the other affiliates
have these challenges that WCRHA does not necessarily
have. We are truly blessed as an affiliate. I say this with all
the thankfulness to our amazing Board of Directors, our
sponsors, and volunteers. Each and every one of you is an
integral part of what makes WCRHA the great Affiliate
that we are.
As always, I am very thankful to all of our volunteers.
Each of you is an integral part of WCRHA and in the
smooth operation of our shows. Thank you!
In closing, I am looking forward to the following upcoming events: the Summer Gold and Grand, Brookside’s
Summer Slide, the High Roller Reining Classic, and the
Northwest Regional Affiliate Finals and WCRHA Year
End/Futurity show. I hope that each WCRHA member
does well at these shows, and I am looking forward to seeing you all and seeing you compete.

Since its inception in 2010, the
West Coast Reining Horse
Association’s Non Pro Shootout has been a heart pounding,
bleacher stomping, crowd cheering, cash dispensing, show season
highlight. Saturday, May 24,
2014, was no exception as the
West Coast ran its Fifth Annual
Non Pro Shootout in Rancho
Murieta, California. If you are
unfamiliar with the format of the
Non Pro Shootout, let me explain
its merits so that you may feel the
enthusiasm that the exhibitors
felt when they participated in an
event that is slowly becoming a
hallmark offered by the WCRHA.
There are a number of appealing attributes to this unique class,
but one of the most popular is
that it is open to any horse, any
eligible Non Pro rider, and any
combination of horse and rider
regardless of ownership. Yes,
you heard right!! Have you ever
dreamed of showing your neighbor’s gelding or your best friend’s
mare? Have you ever wished that
you could “steal” your trainer’s
horse for just one ride? Well, this
was your chance to beg, borrow, or
steal your dream horse for one wild

expectations, no problem! There was some wiggle room
and riders still earned a little something for their efforts!

This class offered both the Non Pro and the Limited
Non Pro divisions, entered individually or combined.
The Non Pro class guaranteed $2,000 cash to the winner and the Limited Non Pro guaranteed $1,000 cash
to the winner with Champion and Reserve Champion
buckles and checks and prizes through 10th place in
both divisions.
With the draw party hosted Friday night May 23rd by
GD Performance Horses and Delbert Tullos following
the close of entries, riders and supporters alike were remiss to miss out on one of West Coast’s premier events.
In addition to watching traditional horse and rider
combinations show, unlikely pairs were seen matching
their catch ride abilities against tried and tested teams,
all for the opportunity to win a stack of cash at the back
gate. With each successive year, our entries have increased as have our payouts and our crowd support. So
whether you wanted to come out and cheer on your favorite horse and rider team or enter your favorite horse
to make up one of the teams, exhibitors marked their
calendars for May 24th and came out to the Murieta
Equestrian Center to ride, cheer, or support their peers!

Futurity Training &
Cup Program
West Coast Reining Horse Association
(WCRHA) is very proud to be the largest
National Reining Horse Association (NRHA)
regional affiliate. We have a very active membership base and we enjoy a large and good
show program. However, as a part of building a strong sustainable reining community,
it will be important to recruit and support
both new riders and young horses. Specifically futurity riding has not been a strong
part of our overall rider and show program,
and some of our members have strong interests in
strengthening this part of the WCRHA program.
In late November and early December each year
NRHA conducts a major competition in Oklahoma
City, OK for three year old reining horses called the
NRHA Futurity show. This show is open for professional as well as non-professional riders. As the
Futurity is only open for three-year-old horses, there
is limited time for trainers and riders to prepare
for this major event. There are no showings of the
horses before the second half of the horses’ third
year. This means that the overall season is a 5-6
month endeavor. Due to limited training time and
applicable show opportunities, riders have limited
practice and preparation for the major futurity
event.
Futurity competition is important for riders
and horses. The riders get valuable experience from
handling very young inexperienced horses and the
horses get great training before they enter into their
three years of derby competitions.
To address this particular area, WCRHA has
agreed to sponsor a structured Futurity Special
Interest Group (F-SIG) program. The program is
self-funded through sponsorships and therefore
there will be no cost or drain on our existing resources. The F-SIG program will focus on preparing
riders and horses for the year-end NRHA Futurity
by actively arranging clinics, schooling shows, and
encouraging show organizers to include futurity
classes at existing events. The benefits of the F-SIG
program should be that riders and horses are better
prepared for the NRHA Futurity show. It will also
bring in younger horses to the overall WCRHA
Affiliate Futurity Non Pro Rider & Owner

trainer stables and should make West Coast have a
stronger representation in major national events.
In addition to special training and competitions, the program will include incentives and
recognitions for F-SIG participants. As we start this
program for the 2014 Futurity, the following will be
our activities and performance cup plans:
• Two independent training sessions (coordinated by Mike Boyle and Dave Hanson)
• One special clinic (currently scheduled with
Randy Paul as guest instructor)
• Tracking of futurity riders’ show performances (two best performances)
Awards for the performance cup are:
• 1st place $3,000
• 2nd place $2,000
• 3rd place
$1,000
Award Notes
• Rewards are only paid as offsets to expenses
related to the 2014 NRHA Futurity in Oklahoma City, OK (travel, hauling, hotel, food, and
boarding).
• Entry fees are excluded.
• Money will be paid only to the NP Futurity
horses that go to OKC, but any futurity and
derby horses can participate in Practices and
Clinician Day with priority given to 3 year olds.
Derby horses and riders are welcome to participate
on a space available basis. However, the performance cup is limited to the non-pro futurity riders/
horses only.
