Gallery Bookshop, located on the corner
of Main and Kasten streets in Mendocino, is actually
older than fifty if you start its history with Fionna
Perkins. Attending the Mendocino Art Center Fair
on Labor Day weekend in 1960, Perkins fell in love
with the village and began fantasizing about a new
life for herself on the coast. She decided Mendocino
needed a bookstore.
Betty Goodman became the next owner and ran
the place for more than a decade and was ready
to retire when Tony Miksak bought the operation
in 1980. Miksak is a man of many talents, but
bookselling and buying books from publishers
was new to him. Goodman tutored him but he had
some early disappointments. This man loved to play
chess, so he ordered lots and lots of chess books.
Unfortunately the reading public in Mendocino
was not as big on chess playing and those books
languished on the shelves.
Mendocino Art Center creator Bill Zacha managed
the Jarvis-Nichols building and offered to rent

into Dorr Bothwell’s old studio on Kasten and Albion streets into a shop Miksak called
Confetti in the mid-1980s. Children’s books were crowded into a corner around an old
brick fireplace and needed more space so in the late 1980s Bookwinkle’s Children’s
Books took over Confetti’s space and the greeting cards migrated back down the street
to Gallery Bookshop.
In 1993 change and growth occurred when the bookshop literally broke through the
wall and spread into the old Jarvis-Nichols mercantile space on Main Street and
brought Bookwinkle’s back under the same roof, where it has existed ever since.
This community’s bookshop has long been a retreat—a place to come to on a quiet
morning or a rainy afternoon, and a destination walk after a dinner out on a Saturday
night. Parents bring their children in to read and explore the room that is just for them,
but many a mother or father also escapes on their own after the school drop-off or on
a lengthened lunch hour. Builders and artists stop in for reference and reconnaissance,
(and perhaps a good mystery). Book groups and gardeners, roofers and priests, knitters
and nature lovers all find something to read. Visitors stop in to browse and exclaim with
joy at finding such a treasure in a small town.
And if a person can’t find what they are looking for, they forage into the noisier area of
Gallery Bookshop; the front counter. You might call it a Customer Service desk; the staff
calls it “the box.” It is the epicenter of activity and conversation about books. With the
glorious view of the ocean in the foreground and the phones ringing in the background,
a bookseller will be present there to help recall the title you are thinking of…“It has a
yellow cover, and I think the author’s name is Mike.” “That’s about all we need to start
digging,” grins one of the staff.
The store has a huge selection on hand, of course, and an inventory program that
enables them to search and find hundreds of thousands of books. They have access to
information from publishers and industry book reviewers. If all else fails, they will use
Google to pinpoint the title you are looking for, and then order your book for delivery the
next day. Sure, you could do that part at home, but this process inspires conversations
around the box which inevitably draws in other staff members and customers; tends
to inspire further conversations about other books, and may even instigate an intercom
call back to Christie’s office for an on-the-spot answer to an interesting question.
Christie Olson Day is the current owner of Gallery Bookshop in Mendocino. She started
as an employee in 1998 and bought the business in 2006. “I don’t think of myself
as the owner so much as a steward or caretaker,” says Christie. “Gallery Bookshop
belongs to the community, both near and far. It belongs to the people who love it. It’s
my responsibility, not my possession.”
To work in a bookstore was a lifelong dream for Christie, much as it is for so many
avid readers. She’s happy to report that bookstore work has been one of those rare
instances in which a dream that starts with, “I’ve always wanted to…” turns out to be
all you’d hoped for and more. “From the very beginning, it was much harder than I’d
imagined, but it’s also always been more interesting and satisfying than I had imagined
as well.”
Bookshop shelves packed to the rafters include sections stocked with books about Mendocino
and books by local authors. The store strives to represent every book in print by or about local
folks. Photo by Jane Oros.

However, Christie never, ever thought she would want to own a business. Her parents
were both teachers, and she was raised to believe that a career wasn’t a career if it
didn’t come with job security and a dependable paycheck. It was at a turning point in
their lives when she and her husband, Ryan Olson Day, were considering moving back
to their home state of Washington that they asked themselves a definitive question.
“What would absolutely keep us here on the coast?” they wondered.
For Christie it was the possibility of a career at Gallery Bookshop. She blithely sent off
an e-mail to then-owner Tony Miksak, in which she mentioned his gray hairs, and told
him that she would be interested in taking over if he became interested in retiring. “I
just about dropped dead when he responded immediately,” she exclaims. “It turned
out he had already been making plans to retire. My daughter, Susannah, was just two
at the time; my son, Collin, was not yet in kindergarten. I really wasn’t ready but we
did it anyway.”
That’s old history now that Susannah and Collin are seen getting off the school bus
each day and hanging out in the middle-reader section. Collin often has a buddy with
him and Susannah is shaping up to be quite an efficient staff assistant.
“Running a business takes a lot of time and attention,” says this working mother. “You
can ask my family about that. It’s a sacrifice but one of the trade-offs is that Gallery
Bookshop is a pretty darn kid-friendly workplace. I had Collin before buying the store,
but I came back to work here with him in a baby sling when he was four weeks old.
He’s been here pretty much ever since. Both of my children have joined a family of
Bookshop Kids that include the children of other staffers both past and present.”
‘For decades, the staff of Gallery Bookshop has been remarkably dedicated and committed to
books and reading. They care so much about what they do, it is hard to describe,’ says Christie

magical combination of its customer base. First and foremost are the lifelong local
supporters; the tourists and return visitors, loyal buyers who intentionally shop locally
and all dedicated supporters of the independent bookstore in general.
“And since our core mission is the experience of being here in the store,” adds Christie,
By the time Christie started in bookselling, independents had already been battling the

Bookselling had been getting harder for some time, and wasn’t going to get any easier.

Christie also credits her interesting customers for their solid role in filling the bookshelves.
As a book buyer, a big part of her job is to comb through thousands of forthcoming
books and choose which ones will land on the shelves. “I love coming across unusual,
challenging or downright strange titles and thinking to myself that I know of at least one
person who will want that.” She says with a smile.
Still, we all are aware of the looming influences of big box stores and internet sales.
People are now familiar with and interested in the subjects of how e-commerce and
e-readers are affecting Gallery Bookshop. The bookselling environment is different now
than it was twenty or thirty years ago, when a bookstore could survive simply because
people needed to buy books and it was the only way to do it
“Readers have so many, many options now,” Christie Olson Day states emphatically.
“Not to mention the ‘Angry Birds’ problem. That’s the video game for mobile devices
that’s just one of the gazillion possible distractions for readers.” “We’ve definitely had to
clarify our purpose,” she continues, “and it’s pretty well summed up in the Independent
Bookshop Manifesto that I wrote a few years ago.”
We believe in the book…We believe that together, readers, writers, books and
bookstores can work magic.
“There is something valuable, something irreplaceable, about physical books in a
beautiful space where people can gather. It ‘s an experience people still want, and will
continue to want in an age of virtual everything.”
Meanwhile, the good news is that it seems the virtual world and the physical world of
books really can coexist. Gallery Bookshop has been enthusiastically listing e-books on
their website at gallerybookshop.com since 2007. They now offer 3.5 million e-books
in a partnership with Kobo, and sell Kobo readers in the store. There are many people
who want to be able to read digitally but also want independent bookstores to stick
around. Kobo is the solution, since you can order your virtual books through your
favorite independent bookstore’s application.
Christie Olson Day adds that Social Media has been particularly helpful in reaching
people who want to read e-books. “One of the dangers of all of us living in a virtual life
online is that it’s easy to kind of forget about the real world,” she explains. “By meeting
Real Estate Magazine January 25, 2013 Page 5
our readers online, whether it’s Facebook or Twitter or in their e-mail boxes, we have
found a nice way for us to keep in touch.”
And keep in touch they do. Gallery Bookshop has ‘friends’ in twenty countries around
the world, some of whom will probably make it into the shop one day. And when they
do, they’ll find that the bookstore continues to be a place to find the books you want to
read. It’s also the place where you will find books you need whose names you didn’t
even know, before you even knew the need existed.
Community Events at
Gallery Bookshop
The booksellers will be there to help you find those books, the books you will love. As
Johanna Bedford, twenty-two-year-dedicated Gallery Bookshop bookseller, reverently
states, “Books are lovely to touch, they are a tactile experience.” “We (the bookshop)
need to be here. We’re like comfort food. People need us and we need to be around.”
Authors and readers come together through the bookshop’s vibrant
event series, which transforms the store’s space into a gathering
space for expanding your mind and your social circle. (And sometimes
your waistband: the Bookshop Bake-Off series has connected avid
home bakers with an enthusiastic public.) Events take place at least
once a week, and feature speakers from near and far.
And as a kind customer so eloquently wrote in her holiday card to Gallery Bookshop;
“Thanks for being our bookstore in the heart of our community.”

Prolific writer and poet Fionna Perkins opened the first Mendocino bookshop
under the name of Fionna’s Bay Window Gallery in October, 1960, when she
and late husband Richard first moved to the Mendocino coast. Real Estate
Magazine published a feature about Fionna and Richard Perkins in the April
issue, 2012, which, sadly, came out on the very day Richard passed away.
(realestatemendocino.com). Fionna followed him on November 29, at the age of
ninety-three. She added immeasurably to the richness of life on the south coast,
spearheading many ambitious community projects like the renovation of the Arena
Theater, and injecting her energy and sense of wry wit into countless festivals and
events as Point Arena’s Poet Laureate for Life. She and Richard were instrumental
in founding both the Mendocino and Gualala art centers. The project both she
and Richard were proudest of was, without a doubt, the creation the Point Arena
Library, for which they worked and fund raised tirelessly. Her commitment to
literature and her community never flagged. She mentored countless poets and
writers, initiatied poetry readings, literary workshops, and art events. “She was
a ‘community-oriented culture agitator,’” said friend, Stephen Kessler, “tireless in
her advocacy for arts, culture and literacy on the coast. Before her arrival there
literally was very little.”
We miss her.

NEW LISTINGS
Broker’s Bulletin
2013 is starting off with a flourish! We have already put over two million dollars’ worth of escrows together, scheduled many showings of
our beautiful listings, and are looking forward to bright sunny days with open houses for the locals and tourists. We have many new listings
and are ready for more! We are updating our Web presence, exploring new creative photography ideas, and making sure our contact with our
clients is the best ever. We have a stellar group of buyers that are ready to find the perfect property just for them.
Our office is known for “putting it out there” and we are doing just that. Inventory is low at the moment which is helping to stabilize prices
and increase the attention of buyers that are here to establish their lives in this incredibly pristine environment. This is the time to list if you
have been waiting! We will come to you, thoroughly go through your goals with you, analyze strategy for the best marketing plan we can put
together to increase the likelihood of your success in the most expedient manner possible.
My 25 years of mortgage experience has never been needed more as we embark in the “new” real estate market, where actual qualification
is the norm. Knowing how to evaluate the ability of buyers to perform is key to the success of escrows closing and everyone’s time counting
towards the completion of expectations.
Please remember, there are three “E’s” in “real estate,” and at Pamela Hudson Real Estate, they stand for “Energy, Ethics, Experience!”
We look forward to hearing from you soon.
Very best, Pamela Hudson
