Forbes Asia has announced its annual Heroes of Philanthropy list, shining the spotlight on Asia's most
notable givers to charitable causes and four Malaysians made it into the exclusive list of 40 names
spanning 13 countries.
The Malaysians honoured are Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd chairman Tan Sri Lee Oi Hian and his wife,
Daybreak executive chairman Puan Sri Sandra Lee, Mah Sing Group managing director Tan Sri Leong
Hoy Kum and Eu Yan Sang Malaysia chairman Datuk Anne Eu, a local English news daily reports on the
Malaysian honorees.
The Forbes list gives a brief description on how these honorees made it onto their top 40 philanthropists
list as detailed below.
Anne Eu, 61, Chairman, Eu Yan Sang Malaysia
Early this year she led a team of volunteers though the muddy, leechinfested rain forests of Sabah to
donate water filters and rice cookers as part of the Roti 1Malaysia campaign. Each day the campaign’s
volunteers, often students, pick up surplus food and goodies from 5star hotel kitchens and give them to
orphanages, oldage homes and refugee centers. She thought of the campaign while judging a hospitality
award in 2011. She realized that 5star hotels routinely threw away highquality fresh foods because they

produced too much. Why not feed the surplus to the needy and hungry instead? Today 24 5star hotels
and 7 bakeries are part of this food network. Every day 50 to 60 volunteers collect bread, croissants,
cakes and pastries and distribute them in the Klang Valley.
Lee Oi Hian, 64 , Chairman, Kuala Lumpur Kepong and Sandra Lee, 63, Chairman, Daybreak
Husband and wife team pursue separate causes–his Tan Sri Lee Loy Seng Foundation, named for his
father, awards scholarships to 5060 students a year; her training center rehabilitates physically and
mentally challenged people.
Leong Hoy Kum, 59, Group MD, Mah Sing Group
His Mah Sing Foundation has disbursed more than $2.5 million to educational initiatives from funding
students to refurbishing classrooms, as well as for Nepal earthquake relief and other projects.
According to Forbes, the list not only features philanthropists who have made the news with their
donations in the past year, but also recognizes people who have compiled a long record of supporting
worthy causes. Honorees include a mix of billionaires, business people and captains of industries who are
also making a mark with their generosity.
The list which you can read here, also features five entries from China and two from Singapore among
other notable entrants from Japan, Australia, South Korea, Taiwan and India.
