Welcome New Board Members
Easton, Md. – January 29, 2013 – Waterfowl Chesapeake Inc. and Waterfowl Festival Inc. have recently
welcomed new additions to their Boards of Directors.
Dr. Wayne H. Bell and Ms. Mary Bee Walsh Gaines both joined the Waterfowl Chesapeake Inc. Board of
Directors and will work with the seven current directors to continue to develop the strategic direction and
future conservation projects of the organization. The Waterfowl Chesapeake Board also works closely with the
leadership of the Waterfowl Festival to present the annual event dedicated to raising funds for the creation,
preservation and restoration of waterfowl habitat in the Chesapeake Bay region.
Dr. Bell is Senior Associate and former Director of the Center for Environment and Society at Washington
College. Prior to joining the Washington College faculty in Fall 2000, he was Vice President for External Relations
for the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science at Horn Point near Cambridge, MD. Bell
received his undergraduate degree from the University of Miami, Florida and earned his Ph.D. in Marine
Microbiology from Harvard University. A 30-year resident of Easton, Dr. Bell has served as President of the Board
of Directors of the Adkins Arboretum and is currently past-president of the Maryland Ornithological Society.
Mary Bee Walsh Gaines is a native of the Eastern Shore and has lived her entire life on and around the
Chesapeake Bay. Following her career as a special education teacher, Gaines co-founded the Piney Run
Preservation Association in 1989, where she worked on environmental and land use issues for 15 years. More
recently, she served on a board of the University of Virginia reorganizing and administering a scholarship fund.
Gaines has a home on the Chester River in Kent County.
The Waterfowl Festival has welcomed Judy Knight, Barbara Noyes, Donnie Satchell and Joe Walsh to its eighteenmember Board of Directors.
Judy Knight has been a Waterfowl Festival volunteer since 1994 and currently serves as co-chair of the Art at the
Armory Painting Gallery. Prior to relocating to the Eastern Shore, she was a corporate attorney for Sperry (later
Unisys) Corporation in Pennsylvania for twenty years. Her other community involvement includes service as a
Trustee of the Presbyterian Church of Easton, a member of the Easton Choral Arts Society, volunteer at Habitat
for Humanity ReStore and member of the Tred Avon Yacht Club.
Barbara Noyes relocated to Easton in 2008, and has volunteered for the Waterfowl Festival in a variety of
capacities since the 1990s. In addition to being a dedicated supporter of the Festival, she also sits on the Talbot
Mentors Board of Directors. Prior to moving to the Eastern Shore, Noyes had a successful career in corporate
real estate and property management on the West Coast. A lover of the outdoors, she also spent her early adult
life as a ranger in Yosemite National Park and exchange student in Brazil.
Donnie Satchell has volunteered for the Waterfowl Festival for more than twenty years and is currently the
chairman of the Buy, Sell, Swap exhibit. He has also served as a ticket sales volunteer and bus guide and was
recently a judge for the 2012-2013 Federal Junior Duck Stamp Competition. A resident of Trappe, Satchell has
owned and operated Satchell’s Remodeling for the past 30 years and has also given his time to the Easton Jaycees,
Trappe Lions Club, and numerous youth sports organizations.
Joseph Walsh grew up on the Chesapeake Bay and first became involved with the Waterfowl Festival in his youth.
He is currently a Business Development Officer for PNC Bank and has more than 25 years experience in the
employee benefit and financial services industry. Walsh’s keen interest in the Eastern Shore’s waterfowling and
conservation heritage is evident in his volunteer service in the Festival’s Walsh Waterfowling Artifacts Exhibit.
“We are tremendously fortunate to have such a dedicated and talented group of individuals joining the leadership
of Waterfowl Chesapeake and the Waterfowl Festival,” comments Ron Flohr, president of the board for each
organization. “The combination of their skills and experience as well as passion for the Festival and the
conservation work it supports will be a very welcome addition to both boards as we work to advance the mission
of each organization in the coming year.”
