Winter 2015-16 - Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care
Proud to Be Your Community, Not-for-Profit Hospice WINTER 2015–16 A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO Thank you! The words seem inadequate to express how much your generosity and support for Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care has meant to us—not just this year, but for more than three decades now. But, words are all we have, so let me say it again—thank you. Cathy Swanson, MPH Chief Executive Officer BOARD OF DIRECTORS Marc Carpenter Chair James E. Sponenberg Vice-Chair Janet Winkler Secretary Charles Shell Treasurer Robert Belk, MD Medical Director Emeritus Scott Brown Our hospice enjoys tremendous support and trust from the community. It is important for you to know we could not do what we do without you. In 2014-15, your contributions helped Caldwell Hospice provide nearly $100,000 in care to those in our community who needed end-of-life care and services but had no way to pay for them. We are humbled and honored by your giving. And, it is not just financial giving that makes it possible for us to continue our work. While monetary donations are important and needed, Caldwell Hospice also relies on the giving of time and talent to help others. Each year hundreds of volunteers— from senior citizens to teenagers— give of themselves by visiting with patients and families, working in the patient care units, doing clerical work, and assisting with yard work and other needed tasks. Churches, civic groups and individuals provide snacks for the patient care units, supplies, meals and more. Last year alone, volunteers provided nearly 14,000 hours of service. Non-profit hospices around the country are facing all types of challenges in today’s competitive health care marketplace. Ours is no exception, but the one thing that sets Caldwell Hospice apart from others is the strong, steadfast commitment of our community. Because of your tax-deductible contributions, we are able to provide hospice and palliative care services to anyone who needs them, regardless of ability to pay. But, beyond that, we also can offer bereavement services to the community at large, even those who are not affiliated with Caldwell Hospice. We can provide educational support and training in areas such as dementia care and end-of-life issues. With you, we are true community partners. We pledge to be wise stewards of your contributions and never take for granted the kindnesses you bestow on us. We appreciate your generosity, and we ask for your continued support as we renew our commitment to you to provide respectful, quality end-of-life care to all who need and desire our services. —Cathy Swanson, —Chief Executive Officer Peg Broyhill Joseph C. COVER STORY Proud to Be Your Community, Not-for-Profit Hospice or more than 33 years, Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care has been on a mission to provide compassionate, respectful, quality end-of-life care to our community regardless of one’s ability to pay. In today’s world, such focus on patient and family first may sound a bit old-fashioned, but it has been and shall remain the guiding force behind our non-profit hospice. F Even in an ever-changing Serving about 750 patients a year, Caldwell Hospice is a leader among non-profit hospices statewide. It operates North Carolina’s oldest patient care unit with its Kirkwood facility in Lenoir. While the majority of patients still receive most of their care at home, Caldwell also has a second patient care unit at the Robbins Center in Hudson. “Our community trusts Caldwell Hospice to be there in its most difficult and vulnerable times— during the illness and death of a loved one, and we honor that trust by doing the very best we can to help each patient live each day in as much dignity and comfort as possible,” says Swanson. “It is a mission we take most seriously.” Medicare requires a set of basic hospice services from all hospice agencies for each patient, regardless of payment source. These include physician and nursing services, social work services, spiritual and bereavement counseling, and dietary counseling. Medicare and continued on page 10 and competitive health care market, service to our fellowman has always been our number one priority, and it will continue to be because that is what our community desires and deserves. While for-profit corporations have gotten into the hospice business— in fact, 70% of today’s hospice providers in the U.S. are for-profit— the not-for-profit community hospice model is built not on a financial motive, but an underpinning of ministry and service first. The hospice movement— nationally and locally—was founded on these community principles of neighbors helping neighbors. “We care for people—people who need care and compassion as they and their loved ones face the end of life. That’s our business,” says Cathy Swanson, chief executive officer. “Even in an ever-changing and competitive health care market, service to our fellowman has always been our number one priority, and it will continue to be because that is what our community desires and deserves.” On the Cover: Caldwell Hospice’s facility at Kirkwood in Lenoir. In every area of care, Caldwell Hospice does more than what is required, offering much more to patients in our community. These enhanced services include: cardiac and pulmonary care at home for patients with heart/lung disease; a dementia care program; massage and aromatherapy; pet visits; vigil music by the bedside; a veterans honoring veterans program; 11thhour volunteers to sit with families during the final hours; a legacy project; and a full complement of community bereavement services, which are open to anyone who needs them, not just hospice patients and families. We are not just another healthcare provider. We are your community hospice, and we are honored that you have chosen to entrust us with the care of your loved ones. All these services are available to all—even those who have no insurance, Medicare, or any other means of payment. In other words, Caldwell Hospice never turns away a patient because he or she cannot pay, and that patient receives the same level of care as anyone else. How can our hospice make this commitment when the cost of health care is rising on every front? The answer is the generosity and support of the community we serve. Caldwell Hospice was born of a grassroots community movement in the early 1980s to provide our friends and neighbors with a holistic approach to end-of-life care that would address the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of patients and those who love them. It was in those very early days that this strong commitment to Caldwell Hospice was forged and established, and it has continued to sustain us all these years as we have grown and expanded our services and outreach. “We are not just another healthcare provider. We are your community hospice, and we are honored that you have chosen to entrust us with the care of your loved ones,” says Swanson. “Ours truly is a joint effort—Caldwell Hospice and the community coming together to care for one another. Neighbors helping neighbors—that is the difference, the real distinction of a non-profit hospice.” C New Members Welcomed VOLUNTEER NEWS to Board of Directors Making a World Caldwell Hospice welcomes four recently-elected members to its board of directors.
