Spotlight on … Allowances
O
nly 1 percent of children save any of their allowance for the
proverbial “rainy day,” according to parents surveyed by
the American Institute of CPAs, though most kids pocket enough
allowance over the course of a year to buy an iPad® and three
Kindles – and have money to spare.
61 percent of parents pay their children an allowance, averaging for
the year $780 or $65 a month.
The vast majority of kids have to work for their allowance, and they
average about 6.2 hours of chores per week.
Good grades can also mean big bucks for kids: The average going
rate for an “A” is $16.60.
Many parents begin paying their
children an allowance starting at age
8. Experts agree the earlier you teach
kids about managing money the
better. To encourage a younger child
to save, try using three jars labeled
“saving,” “spending” and “charity”
and have your child deposit specific
amounts into each. We also offer
savings accounts for children from
new born to college. Bring your
children in this summer to open
their very own savings account.

Trying to Sell or Thinking About It?
Open the Door to a
Remodel Plan That Pays Off
H
ome prices may
be up in your
neighborhood – more
reason to invest in your
home to get the best
price if you’re planning
to sell. Despite what
Teresa Hall, VP
conventional wisdom
Mortgage Lending
says, most of the home
improvement projects with the greatest
return on investment are not so glamorous.
Did you know a new front door ranks at the
top of the list? According to a recent report
from Remodeling magazine, sellers recoup
66 cents of every $1 they spend on the
average remodeling project.
Before you splurge, consider these three
upgrades and fixes. They won’t break the
bank, but could pay off and help you clinch
a deal if you’re serious about selling:
1. Create space. Knock out a nonstructural wall, or remove that kitchen
island. Anything that opens space and
creates a sense of flow is advantageous.
2. Prune and landscape. Tangled trees
and unkempt bushes can obscure views and
darken interiors.
3. Address the basics. Insulate the attic,
repair plumbing leaks or replace rusty
rain gutters. These fixes can go a long way
toward boosting value.
If improving resale value and recovering
remodeling costs are important to you,
consult with a real estate agent first, then
make it happen with a home equity loan
from Barksdale Federal Credit Union.

Money Tips
1. Review your insurance coverage and file claims as soon as
possible. Do not, however rush to settle your claims. Make sure
you have been adequately compensated for your losses within
the limits of your policy.
2. Locate your credit cards. Immediately call the issuers if you
can’t find them.
3. Use credit cards prudently for emergencies to avoid overwhelming balances later.
4. Reject unsolicited and fee-based offers to fill out loan and
emergency grant applications. Contact your financial institution or legitimate assistance agency if you need help.
5. Develop a financial priority list. Your budget may be seriously
affected by reduced income and increased expenses, so consider each line item carefully.
6. If you are unable to meet all your financial obligations, communicate with your lenders as soon as possible – you could
save your credit history from future damage.

Directors’ Corner
Get to Know
the Leesville Center
Barksdale Federal opened the Leesville Center in December 2003
and held the official grand opening on Feb. 12, 2004. Following
the attacks of 9/11, access to Fort Polk Army Post was cut off
completely because of the threat level. Barksdale Federal knew
we needed to provide a place for our non-military and retirees to
conduct their financial business.
Board of Directors: (Back row) Arno Easterly, Keith Fontenot,
Al Oar, Bernie Hawk. (Front row) Roy Walling, Virgil Barnette,
Charleene Ringler.
Service Representative. It is this type of teamwork that creates a
successful story for our Leesville Center – opened out of necessity
and now the fourth highest transaction count of all our locations.
We immediately opened a small office to serve the Leesville community where we could handle loan demand and deposits that did not
involve cash. BFCU soon opened a full-service center in a remodeled
building – just across Hwy 171 from our current office – and began
to look for land to build the existing center. Since then the Leesville
Center has grown tremendously.
The Leesville employees stand by their belief that membership
is family. They are such a great team and display that not only
in their everyday work environment, but also when engaging in
the community. Some of the Center employees’ favorite memories about working at the Leesville location are their community
outreach projects with different organizations. The Leesville
Center is always there to give back and truly displays the Barksdale Federal tag line, “Your Financial Partner for Life.” They see
themselves as more than just your local credit union.
With great success, there is great leadership. Teresa Hall served as
our Leesville Center manager for over nine years. In April 2015
Teresa was promoted to Vice President of Mortgage Lending.
Although her employees at Leesville were sad to see her go, they
are so grateful for Teresa’s new opportunity and glad she is still
part of the BFCU team.
“We are more than honored to have been blessed with yet another
great leader,” says Margaret Carlisle, Vice President of Southern
Region Retail Operations. Stephen “Steve” Woods was hired as
the new Leesville Center manager and worked closely with Teresa
before her transition to the mortgage department. “We really enjoy
our time getting to know our members in the Leesville/West Central Louisiana area. We are truly a family, both staff and members.
We are excited to be such a vital part of our members’ financial
well-being,” says Steve.
Center employees agree with the manager. “Our staff is one big
team. We all pull together to help each other out with our workloads,” says Ruth Langhorne, Leesville Center Head Member
Leesville Center employees visiting their local nursing home and the
Center staff with their CASA toy donation last Christmas.
Introducing Stephen Woods,
Leesville Center Manager
We are excited to introduce our new Leesville
Center manager, Stephen Woods. Steve comes
to us from The Vernon Bank where he was
Senior Vice President since 2007. Steve has
over 24 years invested in the financial industry
as a branch manager, VP of Commercial
Lending and Senior Vice President. Steve
earned degrees from Northwestern State University and
Louisiana State University. Steve also graduated from The
Southwestern Graduate School of Banking located at Southern
Methodist University in Dallas, TX. We are very confident that
our Leesville Center is in good hands. Welcome Steve Woods to
the BFCU family – we are honored to have you aboard!
