Summer Reading 2013 Touchdown Reading Program
Summer Reading 2013
Touchdown Reading Program
Dear Parents,
Silverstein Hebrew Academy will be participating in the Touchdown Reading Program, a
reading incentive program in conjunction with TD Bank. Your child will have the opportunity to
improve his or her reading skills while earning cash from TD Bank. Each child will be required to
read three books according to his/her level and complete an assignment related to each book
read over the summer. The grades for the summer assignments will be averaged into the 1 st
gradinperod.Byreading aditonal7boks,yurchildwearn$10depositdnasving
account at your local TD Bank.
The Game Plan
When:
What:
How:
June 24, 2013 to August 30
Touchdown Reading Program will earn your child cash for a TD
savings account, in addition to yardage in our football game for each
leveled book read.
Your child needs to read 3 or more books.
Please keep track of the books your child reads using the Reading Log attached to this
sheet. Each child must hand in the completed Reading Log and assignments to his/her teacher
on the first day of school (Sept. 3). Students will enter the Touchdown Reading contest for
prizes. Your TD Bank reading log will be returned within the first week of school so that your
child can take the log to a local TD Bank for the $10 deposited into his/her very own savings
account.
Please note that we will be emailing all parents a complete list of recommended
summer reading list for levels A-Z. Children should read at their level, but are encouraged to
attempt one level above their own. The more they read over the summer, the greater the
likelihood that a student advances in reading fluency and rises in reading levels.
Here's to a summer full of reading!

Summer 2013 reading assignment grades 3-5
Reading response questions
Choose 1 reading response for each of the 3 books you are required to read over the
summer. Each response must be written in a proper paragraph format using a topic sentence,
3-4 supporting detail sentences and a concluding sentence. This assignment will count as
students' first homework assignment of the school year and is due to the General Studies
teacher on September 3, 2013.
1. After you read your book, think of what makes a hero. Make a list of traits a hero should
have. Who is your personal hero and why?
2. Write a letter to the author telling what you thought of the book. Write two questions
that you would love to ask the author if you could.
3. Choose 5 new words you learned in this book. What do they mean?
4. Would you read another book by this author, why or why not?
5. What surprised you in the book? Why?
6. If you could change one thing in the book, what would it be? Why would you change it?
7. What does this book remind you of in your own life? Why?
Literacy-based fun activities
Choose 2 fun activities from the list below. This assignment will count as students' first
homework assignment of the school year and is due to the General Studies teacher on
September 3, 2013.
1. Draw a new cover or make an advertisement for your favorite book.
2. Write your own poem or song and illustrate it.
3. Read a recipe or cooking directions and have an adult help you to cook it. Describe what
you made and how it tasted.
4. Create a book about your family. Suggestions: a family tree, character traits or favorite
activities of each family member, or describe a family tradition.
5.
Do something to help someone else. Write about how they responded or about how
you felt about being a helper.
Have a wonderful summer!
