Pastoral
Msgr. Jerry’s Journal
Feast of Pentecost: Fifty days
(Pentecost comes from the Greek
pentecoste, which means “the fiftieth day”) after his resurrection the
Lord sent the Holy Spirit down from
heaven upon his disciples. This
began the age of the Church. To
this day, the Holy Spirit is the
“soul” of the Church, the essential
principle of her life. It’s a great day
to wear red to denote the flames of fire that rested on the
apostles when the Holy Spirit came upon them. Come
Holy Spirit! May we be open to the Spirit just as Mary was
at the Annunciation—“let it be done according to your
Word.”
Confirmation: Speaking of Pentecost, Bishop Boyea will
celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation with us on Monday, May 23. There will be seventy-five students being
confirmed.
Town Hall Meeting: This Tuesday, May 17, is our first
town hall meeting to discuss the diocesan capital campaign coupled with our campaign to make some capital
improvements on our campus. I am really excited about
this endeavor, but a bit nervous at the same time. I’m not
sure where the Spirit is going to lead us, but so many
parishioners have told me that they are excited about the
possibilities of some capital improvements for our parish.
Parish Meetings: Besides the town hall meeting this
week, I am meeting with our Finance Council (May 16)
and our Pastoral Council (May 18). We have been meeting monthly. I really appreciate their care and vision for
the parish.
School Happenings: This Saturday, May 21, is our
school auction. Thanks in advance for your generosity
and kindness to our school. I hope to see you there!
Thoroughly enjoyed “grandparents” day at our school on
May 9. The musical renditions by the students were all
great. I especially enjoyed the “who’s on first” baseball
skit by our 8th graders taken from Abbott and Costello (I
miss shows like that). On Sunday, May 15, I am attending
the sports end-of-year banquet. Sports and other extracurricular activities are so important in the education process.
Notes
commented on the little taped phone message you received from me and how you actually started talking back
to me! I don’t like getting phone calls like that; thanks for
your cooperation.
Marriage meeting: This Friday, May 20, I am attending
a workshop on the new marriage ritual for weddings. We
have seen a great increase in the number of weddings for
the year. We already have 22 marriages planned.
Another Eucharistic Miracle: Recently read the story of
a Eucharistic miracle in Poland. On Christmas Day of
2013 a consecrated host fell on the floor. It was picked up
and placed in a container of water. Soon after, red stains
appeared on the Host. The Host underwent various testing by research institutes. They found that the Host contained “cross-striated muscle, most similar to heart muscle.” Amazing that Jesus is always willing to give His
heart and soul to us!
Fire truck ride: I’ve always wanted to ride in a fire truck,
and got my wish when I was picked up at the parish on
May 6. This was granted when one of our parishioners
bid on this at a fundraiser event. After picking me up, we
went to the house of 4th grader (name removed) and we
rode back to school. When we arrived at the school parking lot, I blew the fire truck horn, which startled a great
many parents dropping off their children.
Looking ahead: This Sunday is the last day of the Easter season. We will re-enter ordinary time (7th week) on
Monday. However, we have two great feasts coming up:
Holy Trinity Sunday on May 22 and the Feast of Corpus
Christi on May 29.
So glad to be here. Please know of my love and prayers
for you. Have a blessed week.
Saint quote of the week:
“Every grace granted to humanity has three degrees in
order; for by God it is communicated to Christ, from Christ
it passes to the Virgin Mary, and from the Virgin it descends to us.”
St. Bernardine of Siena, whose feast day is May 20. He
had a strong devotion to the Blessed Mother.

signed up for our pictorial directory. So many of you have

are made possible by our contributions to DSA.
If you have not yet made a gift to DSA, we invite you to
give a gift today. There are many ways to give….We

permanent time. Effective Memorial Day
weekend, Sunday, May 29th, the Sunday
evening Mass time will be 6:00 p.m. and will remain the
same time year round.

Town Hall Meetings
Tuesday, May 17th, and Wednesday, May 25th,
6:30 - 8:00 p.m.
Come, Learn More, and Discuss the
Needs of our Parish and Diocese
The Diocese of Lansing is launching its first-ever
diocesan-wide capital campaign called Witness to Hope.
The campaign will address important pastoral needs at
both the parish and diocesan level. Details about the diocesan case for support are listed on the inserted flyer.
Our parish also has significant needs and is exploring the
best way to meet those needs and support the wider
Church. We would like to discuss and gather your input
on these needs and the diocesan campaign at a Town
Hall meeting on Tuesday, May 17th, and Wednesday,
May 25th, (choose one) 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. in the Fr. Bush
Parish Center. We have been asked to be one of 16 Pilot
Parishes to lead this effort. Our campaign would begin
this July and after careful discernment we believe that
this is an excellent opportunity for our parish to address
our needs, while collaborating with the diocese. The
Town Hall meeting is part of a feasibility study for our
parish and will be led by the staff of Greater Mission, a
leading Catholic development firm who will be assisting
the diocese and our parish to conduct the Witness to
Hope Campaign.
We welcome your input and hope that you will be able to
attend one of the meetings and prayerfully consider how
we can best strengthen our parish for the future.
St. Rita’s Guild
Our last meeting before summer arrives will be at
6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11th, at Rose Marie
Shick's home (694-5748). Her co-hostesses are Eleanor
and Patsy. This is a potluck so bring one of your awesome dishes to pass (and maybe your recipe!). Hope to
see everyone there.

Holy Family School
FAITH FORMATION . . . ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
Spring has Arrived!
Holy Family School celebrated two of its favorite spring events this week. On Monday, May 2, kindergarten through
eighth grade students and families honored Mary with a lovely May Crowning service. Students brought in colorful
and fragrant flowers to fill vases, which were processed in by students and placed around the statue of Mary. Second
graders and eighth graders crowned Mary as all of the students looked on. The students prayed the joyful mysteries
of the rosary, prayed a litany to Mary, and sang many of our favorite hymns honoring Mary.
It was a beautiful service!
On Wednesday, May 4, our four-year-old and kindergarten prep students held their annual Mother’s Day Tea. This
year’s theme was “I love you to the sun, moon, and stars.” The children had been preparing for quite some time by
learning about manners for the tea and even preparing a handmade gift for their mothers. They even learned a song
in sign language for their moms!

Prayer for a Child’s First Communion
Lord Jesus,
Bless the children coming forward to receive
Holy Communion for the first time.
May this day be an initial step into
a life-long love of the Eucharist.
Give them a hunger for this sacred food so that they
turn to you for comfort, guidance, and wisdom
as they grow into full discipleship.
Thank you for their innocence and goodness.
May their hands, extended in anticipation of your Body and
Blood, inspire all of us to cherish this sacred sacrament.
Amen.

Religious Education Registration for
the 2016 - 2017 Year
Registration forms will soon be available on our website.
We are in the process of making a few changes in the
program that we feel will greatly enhance the children’s
and families’ experience. Note that the days and times
will remain the same: Sunday and Monday for grades K-6
and Tuesday for grades 7 and 8.
As we end the year in our Religious Education Program,
we would like to thank all those who serve as catechists
and aides. Your commitment and love for our faith is evident in the way you gave of yourselves this past year. In
the words of Pope Francis:
"And this is the job of the catechist: constantly to go forth
to others out of love to bear witness and to talk about Jesus and to proclaim Jesus. This is important because the
Lord does it; it is the Lord that impels us to go forth"
Pope Francis
Thank you for a great year!

Reflection
“The Advocate, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send
in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of
all that I told you.” JOHN 14:26
The materialism of our society lures us to concentrate
more on what we want than on what God wants for us.
The relativism of our world tells us that we should be tolerant of all things, that there is no absolute truth. Pray to
the Holy Spirit to put the right words in our mouths when
challenged about our faith.

Dominican Pilgrimage
in the Year of Mercy
November 10-21, 2016
Lourdes / Bologna / Florence / Siena / Orvieto / Rome
Online booking available
The Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist
invite you to join them on a pilgrimage in honor of two
coinciding Jubilees:
The 800 Year Anniversary of the Dominican Order and
the Extraordinary Year of Mercy.
Our pilgrimage starts at Mother Mary’s famous shrine of
Lourdes in southern France. Mary leads us to her Son
and He leads us to the Church. Consequently, from
Mary’s care we travel to the heart of the Church, Italy,
visiting Dominican secrets and hidden away piazzas,
walking in the footsteps of great saints like Dominic himself, Aquinas, Catherine of Siena, and Fra Angelico. Our
journey concludes in the piazza of the Vatican as “sweet
Christ on earth” (St. Catherine’s title for the Pope) ceremoniously closes the Holy Door for this momentous Year
of Merciful Grace!
Please join us as the Dominican family celebrates its
800th year of our service to the Church and the sharing of
Truth himself through his Divine Mercy. In the words of
Pope Francis, “Benefit from these days, here… to grow
closer to the Lord. The Lord always waits for you, for all
of us. The Lord does not tire in waiting for us; he always
waits for us.”

Saints for the Week (May 15 - 21)
May 15: St. Isidore - St. Isidore was born in Madrid,
Spain and was a farm laborer for his entire life. He married a poor girl who was as holy as himself. After their
one son died in infancy, they lived the rest of their married lives in perfect chastity. Isidore was a man of intense
prayer and his life was marked by numerous miracles and
supernatural interventions. Both he and his wife are venerated as saints. He was formally canonized in 1622
along with St. Teresa of Avila, St. Ignatius, and St. Philip
Neri. The body of St. Isidore is still intact.
May 18: St. John I - St. John was born in Tuscany and
elected Pope in 523. He went to Emperor Justin in Constantinople as an ambassador of the Arian King Theodoric. On his return he was captured by the king, who was
displeased at the outcome of the embassy, and cast into
prison at Ravenna where he died of starvation in 526.
The inscription on his tomb reads: “Victim for Christ because of a forced journey.”
May 20: St. Bernardine of Siena - St. Bernardine lost
both his parents before the age of 7. At the age of 22 he
entered the Friars Minor and spent the first 12 years devoted to prayer. In 1417 he began his ministry as a
preacher. He was commissioned to reform the Franciscan Order and worked as a peacemaker between feuding
cities. In 1427, Pope Martin V asked him to accept the
bishopric of Siena but he refused. St. Bernardine had a
special love for the Holy Name of Jesus which he considered to be a compendium of Scripture and a symbol of
unity. He invented the logo IHS which stands for Iesus
Hominum Salvator (Jesus Savior of mankind). St. Bernardine died on the vigil of the Ascension in 1444 and
was canonized a saint 6 years later.
May 21: St. Christopher Magallanes and Companions
St. Christopher, twenty-one diocesan priests, and three
lay faithful were martyred for being a part of the Cristeros
movement against the anti-Catholic Mexican government
during the 1920s. St. Christopher had erected a seminary
at Totatiche and ministered to the people secretly. When
imprisoned, he was heard to shout from his cell: “I am
innocent and I die innocent. I forgive with all my heart
those responsible for my death, and I ask God that the
shedding of my blood serve the peace of our divided
Mexico.”
