An Important Management Tool:
“Ask Pertinent Questions”
We are constantly faced with situations that demand us to make
difficult decisions. These situations are further aggravated by
multiple options that one must choose in making these decisions.
Managers very often reach quick conclusions based on apparent
causes but lack the skill in Asking Pertinent Questions that would
point to the root cause instead. Therefore, organizations pay a
heavy penalty for poor decisions taken, largely caused by hasty
conclusions derived through erroneous information.
Intent listening helps to formulate pertinent, sometimes intuitive,
questions. Feedback should never be perceived as personal
criticism.
We ought to be willing to develop the skill to be good listeners. This
skill will make us capable of asking the right questions, which will,
in turn, help manage and unite people across the organization;
and it will help make decisions that will profit the organization
Quite often, uncomfortable questions may become potential gamechangers that help the organization to take courageous positions
when dealing with difficult situations.
We need this mindset and skill in an era when we must increasingly
deal with unscripted problems that unfold before us.

Annual Blood Donation Day of the Group 2013
The 8th Annual Blood Donation Day of the Group was held on the 22nd May 2013, with the assistance of the National Blood Bank at
the Staff Development Centre, Welisara. A total of 81 pints of blood was collected on this day.

Take-Off with
A new Country
Manager for
Cathay Pacific,
Sri Lanka
A warm welcome for Anna and a
fond farewell to Edward!
On 3rd August 2013, the Airline division planned
a day out at the Jetwing Lagoon, Negombo to
welcome the new Country Manager for Sri Lanka,
Ms. Anna Choi.
The team also hosted a tea party to bid a fond
farewell to Mr. Edward Coles-Gale and thank him
for the support extended during his tenure.
We wish Edward and Anna, all the very best for
their future endeavours!
On 6th of August 2013, Ms. Anna Choi
was appointed as the Country Manager
for Cathay Pacific Airways, Sri Lanka.
Having joined the Cathay Pacific group
in 1979, Ms. Choi has held a number
of positions within the airline and has
a wealth of experience in customer
services, manpower resources planning
and quality assurance.
She was also the Manager for Dragonair,
Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei.
Ms. Choi replaces Mr. Edward Coles-Gale,
who has accepted duties in International
Affairs and is now based in Cathay Pacific
Head Quarters in Hong Kong.

Cathay Pacific’s most honoured award
‘The Betsy’ for 2013.

On the second day of the tour, the Hong Kong Tourism Board
took charge and the group was taken to Hong Kong’s largest
water park ‘The Ocean Park’. The day’s itinerary also included
a visit to Tsim Sha Tsui and the Harbour City to explore the
vibrant cosmopolitan side of Hong Kong. The day ended with
a lights and music show along the Victoria Harbour.
On the final day of the tour, the group visited Cathay
Pacific City and the programme was led by the Corporate
Communications Department in Hong Kong. A presentation
was conducted followed by a tour at the Cathay City where the
team visited the CX museum, the cabin mock-up and the team
had a quick glance at the B-777 simulator.
The group also experienced the Cathay Pacific Business class
lounge ‘the Cabin’ at the Hong Kong International Airport
before departing to Colombo on CX 711.

The Airline division invited five top
journalists from Sri Lanka’s most popular
media publications to experience the
sights and sounds of Hong Kong on the
19th to the 21st of June.
The initiative was taken as an attempt
to promote Hong Kong as ‘the ultimate
holiday destination’ and Cathay Pacific
Airways as an ambassador which
connects the local travellers to Hong
Kong. The group was also able to
experience the new regional business
class which is now available out of
Colombo.
The tour itinerary included a visit to
Hong Kong Disneyland – the magical
world of Walt Disney on the first day.
The media enjoyed lunch at the Main
Street Corner café and was fascinated
by the spellbinding experience with the
Flights of Fantasy and Disney in the
stars. The visits to the Fantasy Land, Toy
Story Land, Mystic Point, Grizzly Gulch,
Adventure Land and the Tomorrow Land
was timeless.

Fire Fighting Training
FCS News
Two training sessions on fire fighting skills including the
use of fire extinguishers, fire reels and fire hydrants were
organized for all staff of FCS in June 2013. The program
was conducted by Fire Training Officer Mr. Kalansuriya of
the Fire Service Department, Colombo.
In-house Training Program on Telephone Etiquette
A refresher training program on telephone etiquette was
conducted by our Ms. Romain Rodrigo targeting all telephone
users of FCS at our Training Center on 15th June 2013.
Wesak Dansala
For the third consecutive year, staff of FCS
organized an Ice Cream Dansala on 26th
May 2013 to commemorate the Wesak
Festival. The event was a success due to
efforts of all staff who were involved in
distributing over 15,000 ice cream cones
to the public at the turn off to our Facility
(from the main Negombo Road).
Funds for this event were raised by
voluntary contributions by staff of FCS,
service providers to the company and
customers. Finlay Cold Storage too made
a contribution towards the event by
matching funds pledged by staff.

FCS Annual Cricket Tournament
1000 days
without lost
time injuries
In July, FCS reached the
milestone of operating 1000
days without lost time injuries.
The divisions previous best
was 424 days.
It is an important milestone
considering the nature of the
business and the fact that a
facility expansion too was
completed during this period.
Credit goes to all employees
for making a conscious effort
to focus on safety.

Team B emerged champions. Winning
team was captained by Neluka whilst
other members included Tharanga,
Kanthi (Ms.), Dilanjaya, Joel, Sumeda,
Srilal, Srinath, Wasantha and Harshana.
Neluka was also judged "Man of the
Series" for his outstanding performances.
