A community of ICT-enabled
Infopreneurs™ in Southern Africa operating
at grassroots-level and sustained by a
MicroFranchise* approach
Infopreneurs™:
Service-sector micro enterprises operating to render a range of services
as “social entrepreneurs”, i.e. doing it in a entrepreneurial, sustainable manner but with a clear
commitment to the development of the community in which they operate.
* MicroFranchise:
A social movement that seeks to adapt the powerful franchise
business model to the stark reality on the ground in developing countries in order to establish
successful, locally-owned micro enterprises helping to develop low income communities.
*See: Kirk Magleby’s “MicroFranchising as a Solution to
Global Poverty”, Dec 2005.
Guiding Principles *:
 “Rather than continue with a focus on technologies, our
journey has led us towards the establishment of a
network of community based, ICT-enabled, sustainable,
micro service enterprises where ‘development through
enterprise’ is the key.”
 “We have found that when the service delivery channel is
enhanced by a co-ordinated approach to ownership and
channel support, community based businesses work well.”
*See: J. v. Rensburg, A. Veldsman & M. Jenkins in “From Technologists to
Social Enterprise Developers: Our Journey as ‘ICT for development’
practitioners in Southern Africa ”, Jul 2007.
