HCA
HCA’s roots date back to 1968 when Dr. Thomas Frist, Sr. led a group of
physicians to build a hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. Over four decades
of hard work and dedication have made HCA – Hospital Corporation of
America – the nation’s leading provider of quality healthcare services, with
locally managed facilities that include approximately 164 hospitals and
106 outpatient surgery centers in 20 states and throughout Great Britain.
In Florida, there are 43 hospitals and 33 surgery centers, three division
offices and several other service facilities affiliated with HCA.

hCare Access
EHR simplifies access to patient health information
by immediately providing clinicians with accurate
information for optimum patient care. We believe
that EHR will be a fundamental support system for
improving the quality of healthcare in our facilities.
This service provides physicians and their staff
with a faster and more convenient remote login
solution. Whether using PC, MAC, or iPad,
physicians have access to the same clinical
applications they use at the hospital from virtually
anywhere. Connection time is 75% faster than
prior remote access solutions and single sign-on
password management is available.

This portal integrates the electronic medical
records of our physician practices with our hospitals
to provide physicians with access to their patients’
clinical records. It puts critical information at their
fingertips, both on their office computers and via
smartphone technology.
Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE)
CPOE is patient safety technology that allows
providers to place orders directly into the clinical
information system and check each order against
the patient’s medical information. Providers
are alerted to any potential contraindications or
interactions at the time of order. This streamlines
the process and eliminates opportunities for
medical error. In addition to the safety checks,
orders go immediately to the department(s) that
will implement/initiate the order, leading to more
efficient patient care. This system is used in all of
our emergency departments and hospital-wide.
Picture Archiving and Communications
Systems (PACS) & MUSE
PACS stores digital versions of patients’ clinical
images, such as CT and PET scans, MRIs and
X-rays to make them readily accessible at the
hospital or remote locations. The MUSE system
digitizes EKG tracings, allowing for easy access
to this information.
Electronic Bar-Coded Medication
Administration
All HCA East Florida hospitals have implemented
eMAR software to prevent medication errors
and improve patient safety. Each patient receives
an armband with a unique bar code. Before a
medication is administered, the bar codes on both
the armband and medication are scanned to verify
that the patient is receiving the right drug and
dosage at the right time. The software checks each
medication against the patient’s drug history and
lab results. If conflicts or potential interactions are
identified, warnings alert the nurse to verify or call
the doctor before administering the medication.
HCA’s results with eMAR have been instrumental in
encouraging the FDA to develop a standardized bar
code system for the pharmaceutical industry and at
all hospitals to improve patient safety.
Bar code-enabled transfusion administration allows
clinicians to scan the patient ID band and the bar
code on the blood product to ensure that the correct
product is being issued and administered to the
patient. This capability is similar to the functionality
introduced by the eMAR & Bar Coding project, now
called Bar Code-Enabled Medication Administration.
Voice Recognition System
This technology allows physicians to report their
clinical findings directly on a system that recognizes
their voice. It creates efficiency in our radiology
departments by eliminating the delays often caused
by transcriptions. The report then gets reviewed on
screen by the radiologist where it can be corrected,
signed and sent for utilization by other clinicians
within a 30-minute time frame.
Emergency Department Management
Module (EDM)
EDM is used to manage the flow of patients through
the emergency department from arrival through
departure. Both CPOE and eMAR fully integrate
into EDM, allowing for streamlined communication
of orders and medication administration between
physicians and emergency department staff. EDM
is also used to measure and track emergency room
wait times quickly and accurately.
Telehealth
At JFK Medical Center, HCA East Florida has the
ability to monitor patients from a distance using
electronic devices to record and send measurements
of patient vital signs. Telehealth technologies are
evolving to provide real-time interactive health
systems that can engage patients and their care
teams more fully in their treatment. Upon discharge,
patients are monitored and managed from home.
Emergency Department
For the past few years, HCA East Florida has been
working diligently to improve the effectiveness
and efficiency of its emergency rooms. Our focus
on enhancing care and improving emergency
processes has dramatically reduced wait times
to below national averages. We have been so
successful that average emergency room wait
times are now available to the public. This vital
information provides patients with the resources
to make informed decisions about their urgent
medical needs. Wait times for all of our hospitals
are updated every 30 minutes and are available
via text of ER to 23000, iPhone app on our website,
iPhone iTriage app from the AppStore and roadside
digital billboards throughout the region. We also
offer emergency room wait times for our hospitals
with pediatrics. Patients can text ERKids to 23000
for access to immediate average wait times for
children’s emergency care.

Social Media
Technology
Giving Back to the Community
Social media allows the community to
communicate with us directly. All of our
hospitals can be accessed through
Facebook and Twitter, and there is a video
library on YouTube. Our social media
channels make it simple to stay up to date
on our latest technologies, services and
community involvement. Our hospitals’
websites encourage interaction and provide
important information.
Our East Florida Division hospitals are upgrading
technology at an unprecedented rate to ensure
we provide clinical excellence and optimal patient
outcomes. In addition to using the most advanced
medical systems, our facilities have integrated
wireless and digital technology through all
modalities. We also offer nine robotic programs
that enable surgeons to perform precision work
with very small incisions and faster recovery times.
Community Support
Our employees provide financial and volunteer
support to countless civic organizations, schools,
colleges, city projects and charitable organizations
in their communities.
Uninsured/Underinsured Patient Education
HCA East Florida hospitals are committed to
helping uninsured/underinsured patients who
qualify for local and state health benefits. Each
hospital offers on-site benefit education and
Medicaid enrollment assistance.
Remote Patient Monitoring
Airstrip Cardiology and Airstrip OB are two
applications that are improving the speed and
quality of communication within our hospitals.
AirStrip Cardiology – the revolutionary new
technology that delivers EKGs from Emergency
Medical Services directly to doctors’ and nurses’
smart phones or tablets. It allows patients to be
accessed while they’re being transported to the
hospital. The crucial time saved can help save lives.
Airstrip OB delivers vital patient waveform data,
including fetal heartbeat and maternal contraction
patterns, in virtual real-time directly from the
hospital labor and delivery unit to a doctor’s smart
phone. This application gives physicians the ability
to closely monitor patients 24/7 when the demands
of their day necessitate their periodic absence
from the labor and delivery unit.
Volunteering
iTriage
iTriage provides access to medical information on
thousands of symptoms, diseases and medical
procedures. It also allows patients to find
emergency room wait times, get healthcare cost
information and view quality reports. iTriage was
developed to put better medical information into
their patients’ hands. These medical pioneers
have now empowered healthcare consumers
with this revolutionary acute care decision tool.
iTriage is available as a free app for iPhone,
Android, Blackberry & Palm smartphones or
at www.iTriageHealth.com
Since 2005, HCA has redirected corporate income
tax to the Step Up for Students program. Through
this gift, low-income students receive a K-12
scholarship enabling them to receive a quality
education. Qualifying parents can use these grants
to send their child to the public or private school
that best meets their child’s needs.

At Northwest Medical Center, we are constantly
striving to set a new benchmark in the bariatric
field. We are one of the few hospitals in South
Florida recognized by insurance companies as
a Center of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery.
Northwest Medical Center is also accredited by
the Surgical Review Committee (SRC). This
prestigious designation is granted to institutions
that have demonstrated required resources to
perform safe bariatric surgery with excellent
short-term and long-term outcomes. Our specially
trained surgical team, bariatric unit nursing staff
and other clinical personnel provide patients
with the multifaceted standards, complex patient
management and intricate guidelines that rule the
bariatric field today.
Oncology Services
We promote the importance of cancer education,
screening and early detection because the earlier
the diagnosis is made, the better the chance of a
cure. Our highly skilled team offers a full range
of diagnostic, treatment and support services, as
well as the highest standard of care. We utilize the
most advanced techniques to identify the nature
and extent of the specific disease, such as digital
mammography, bronchoscopy, computerized
tomography (CT), endoscopy, fluoroscopy,
ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and
positron emission tomography (PET). In addition
to the newest minimally invasive procedures and
access to innovative research-based approaches,
we offer the benefits of all major treatment
methods, including surgery and medical oncology.
Our interdisciplinary approach includes monthly
tumor board meetings and tumor registry.
Minimally Invasive Surgical Services
The Minimally Invasive Surgical Services Institute
(MISSI) at Northwest Medical Center allows patients
to undergo surgery with significantly less pain,
blood loss and scarring, as well as a much shorter
recovery time. Our innovative technology, expert
staff and personal touch make the surgical process
much easier and more comfortable. The Institute
offers the most advanced minimally invasive
surgical services, including Transoral Incisionless
Fundoplication (TIF) Procedure for safely and
effectively treating chronic acid reflux, along with

®
Robotic Surgery
The use of robotics at Northwest Medical Center
takes minimally invasive techniques into a new
era, further minimizing the physical and emotional
impact of surgery on patients. Surgeries are
performed through small incisions, which replace
the large incisions needed for conventional open
procedures. Robotic technology takes surgery
beyond the limits of the human hand, introducing
precise and versatile instrument movement
combined with three-dimensional visualization of
the operative site. Patients have less trauma and
pain, minimal scarring, less blood loss, faster
recovery and shorter hospital stays. The da Vinci
Si Surgical System is available for the treatment
of uterine fibroids, prostate disease, obesity and
other gynecological diagnoses that may require
surgery, including hysterectomies, oophorectomies,
myomectomies, ovarian cystectomies,
prostatectomies and sleeve gastrectomies.
®
Heart & Vascular Institute
The Heart and Vascular Institute at Northwest
Medical Center is the only Cardiac Level II licensed

Comprised of a team of experienced cardiologists,
anesthesiologists, interventional radiologists,
pulmonologists and internists, these specialists
combine their expertise and knowledge to provide
patients with the latest scientific advances in their
respective fields. Our team performs primary
percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) services,
which enables our facility to have emergency
coronary angioplasty available to patients 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week.
7
HCA EAST FLORIDA: BROWARD COUNTY
Northwest Medical Center meets the national
average of door-to-balloon time, which is the
speed that a hospital can perform angioplasty or
other coronary intervention on a patient having
a myocardial infarction or heart attack. Door-toballoon time is a very specific measure of quality
that involves every step, from diagnosis to surgery.
Our cardiac catheterization lab is equipped with the
latest medical technology and available 24 hours
a day for emergency services. These catheterbased procedures offer the benefits of shorter
hospital stays, less-visible surgical scarring and
reduced recovery time without the pain of a large
incision. These procedures can be performed
on both the heart and peripheral blood vessels.
The echocardiography department is integrated
within the cardiovascular department and
specializes in echocardiography, transesophageal
echocardiography (TEE) and pediatrics.
Maternity/Newborn Services
At Northwest Medical Center, we are dedicated to
providing the most caring and comfortable childbirth
experience. From the earliest stages of pregnancy,
our team is available to answer questions, address
concerns and share the family’s excitement. Our
recently renovated and upgraded rooms were
designed with new moms and families in mind. Our
private Labor-Delivery-Recovery (LDR) rooms offer
comfort and luxury, along with the latest medical
technology and a highly skilled medical team. The
rooms are beautifully appointed with homelike
décor to provide a warm, loving environment where
the family can relax and bond with the new arrival.
8
In keeping with our philosophy of family-centered
maternity care, mothers may stay with their babies
throughout their entire hospital stay.
Pediatrics
Northwest Medical Center is committed to providing
the highest-quality healthcare to children through
a full spectrum of medical and surgical services.
The compassionate staff is trained to do everything
possible to make children and parents feel
welcome, comfortable and secure. Our pediatric
emergency department is open 24 hours a day.
Our skilled physicians, nurses, therapists and
other healthcare professionals provide the
most innovative treatment in a facility that is both
technologically advanced and child friendly.

Since 1966, Plantation General Hospital
has been providing exceptional healthcare
services to the community. The past year
has brought many enhancements, including
expansions to the outpatient center and
pediatric emergency department.
Our outpatient center has been relocated to the

The pediatric emergency department added
seven new beds for a total of 12 and additionally
the waiting area was expanded.
Plantation General Hospital continues to set
a standard of excellence in women’s services,
pediatrics and adult care. Our facility is fully
accredited by The Joint Commission and
certified as a Primary Stroke Center, as well as
one of only three hospitals in the nation named
a Center of Excellence in Neonatal Services.
All of our progress is part of our ongoing
commitment to providing the highest-quality
healthcare to South Florida families.

to ensure that children receive the special care they
need. Our pediatric intensive care unit is equipped
with the latest technology and staffed by pediatric
intensivists. Our pediatric in-patient unit provides
compassionate care for critically ill children in a
comfortable environment.
Maternity Care & High-Risk
Maternity Services
Plantation General Hospital is dedicated to providing
the most caring and comfortable childbirth experience
with anesthesia available 24/7. Our maternity and
high-risk maternity areas have a homelike ambiance
with beautiful décor. The private Labor-DeliveryRecovery (LDR) rooms offer comfort and luxury,
along with the latest medical technology and a highly
skilled medical team. In keeping with our philosophy
of family-centered maternity care, mothers remain
with their healthy babies throughout their entire
hospital stay. We provide lactation services to
aide mothers with the breast-feeding experience.
The maternity babies are secured by a state-ofthe-art advanced security system. For high-risk
pregnancies, our facility houses a perinatal unit
equipped with the most advanced technology and
monitoring systems. The Level III Neonatal Intensive
Care Unit is ready to handle special circumstances
that may arise and our neonatologists are available
around the clock. In addition, we offer a variety
of classes to answer questions about pregnancy,
nutrition, exercise, childbirth and infant care.
Neonatal Intensive Care
For newborns in need of specialized care, Plantation
General Hospital offers the most advanced neonatal
intensive care services. Our Level III Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit is one of the top units in the
United States when judged by positive outcomes.
We are proud to be one of only three hospitals in
the nation designated as a center of Excellence in
Neonatal Services by the Joint Commission. The
31-bed unit offers Level III treatment for newborns in
need of critical care and a Level II progressive care
unit for more stable babies. The Level II unit assists
parents with discharge planning and education
designated to help them care for their newborns.
We provide a state-of-the art NICU transport team
ensuring safe transfer to Plantation General Hospital
for higher level of care.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Minimally invasive surgery, or laparoscopic surgery,
is becoming the predominant technique in many
areas of surgery. For most patients, this approach
offers substantially less scarring, decreased pain,
shorter recovery times and reduced risk of secondary
complications. These procedures are performed
through small incisions that allow for the insertion of
surgical instruments and a camera, which enables
the surgeon to view the procedure on video monitors
in the operating room. This approach is considered
less invasive because it replaces the need for the
large incisions required in traditional surgeries.
Robotic Surgery
At Plantation General Hospital, the use of robotics is
taking minimally invasive surgery to the next level.
Surgeries are performed through incisions that
are considerably smaller than those required for
conventional open surgeries. Our surgeons use the
da Vinci S Surgical System, the most technologically
advanced surgical robotic system in the world, to
perform surgical procedures through high-definition
cameras with extraordinary precision, control and
range of motion. Patients benefit from less trauma
and pain, minimal scarring, less blood loss, faster
recovery and shorter hospital stays.
®
Imaging Services
Our diagnostic imaging department offers a variety
of radiology and imaging services that are available
24 hours a day. We are certified by the American
College of Radiology (ACR) and have years of imaging
experience with infants, children and adults. Our
range of services includes CT scans, MRI, MRA,
specializing in pediatric sedations, diagnostic
x-rays, nuclear medicine, interventional radiology
including Uterine Fibroid Embolisms (UFE), nuclear
cardiac stress testing, digital echocardiogram,
transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) and
ultrasound. We pledge and partner with “Image
Gently” and “Image Wisely” practicing “Radiation
Rights” seeking the lowest radiation does while
achieving high quality diagnostic procedures.
Special Care Unit
The goal of this unit is to help adult patients reach
their maximum potential for recovery as quickly
as possible. We provide a step-down model which
includes cardiac monitoring, specially trained
nurses, aggressive pulmonary rehabilitation and
case management services, along with physical,
occupational and speech therapy.

The Centre – Maternal Addiction Program
The Centre at Plantation General Hospital is a
medically supervised, hospital-based chemical
dependency treatment program designed for
expecting mothers. We offer treatment for alcohol
and substance abuse in a safe, private and supportive
hospital setting under the supervision of specially
trained and experienced physicians, nurses, and
healthcare professionals. Our philosophy is based on
the belief that the power to recover from chemical
dependency resides within a group, rather than
within the individual.
Outpatient Center
Plantation General provides endoscopic ultrasound
examinations. Endoscopic ultrasounds, or EUS,
combines ultrasound technology with endoscopy. For
the patient, both the preparation and the procedure
itself are about the same as conventional upper
or lower GI endoscopy. EUS is helping physicians
diagnose diseases of the pancreas, bile duct, liver,
spleen and gallbladder as well as assessing a variety
of concerns at an early stage.

For the past few years, HCA East Florida has been
working diligently to improve the effectiveness
and efficiency of its emergency rooms. Our focus
on enhancing care and improving emergency
processes has dramatically reduced wait times
to below national averages. We have been so
successful that average emergency room wait
times are now available to the public. This vital
information provides patients with the resources
to make informed decisions about their urgent
medical needs. Wait times for all of our hospitals
are updated every 30 minutes and are available

Many awards and recognitions were given to
University Hospital and Medical Center (UHMC),
acknowledging not only the outstanding
patient care and services provided, but also
the outreach efforts that support various civic,
government and community groups. UHMC
earned the Gold Seal of Approval for Stroke
Accreditation by The Joint Commission. To
earn this distinction, a disease management
program undergoes an extensive, unannounced,
on-site evaluation by a team of Joint Commission
reviewers every two years. These programs are
evaluated against Joint Commission standards
through an assessment of a program’s
processes, the program’s ability to evaluate
and improve care within its own organization,
and interviews with patients and staff. Blue
Cross Blue Shield of Florida awarded the
Blue Distinction certification in Hip and Knee
Replacement to UHMC for delivering highquality orthopedic health care. This designation
is based on rigorous criteria established with
input from expert physicians and medical
organizations. Its goal is to help consumers
consistently find quality specialty care. The Joint
Commission also awarded its certification to
University Hospital through their Hip and Knee
Surgery Disease-Specific Care Certification
Program. These certifications acknowledge
